After going on a snorkeling tour, we came across this little hole in the wall of a taco place. It didn't seem like much at first, but soon after entering the restaurant an immediate sense of chill surfer bar came over us. They have a patio with an excellent view of the Hawaiian jungle, where we sat. This patio, in fact, had a plethora of geckos. It felt as if we were eating in the wild. I ordered El Pastor tacos with apple soda. The wait time for these tacos was about 5-6 minutes. Not so fast to the point where you are wondering if the tacos are fresh or even cooked, but not too long to the point where you are annoyed. When i took a bite of these tacos, i now didn't only see the jungle, i tasted it. We have had the opportunity to stop here a few times over the years. The food is yummy and the salsas are really flavorful. It's a great spot to catch a view on their balcony. The staff is always kind and friendly, even we came in close to closing time. On one occasion there was a mix-up in the protein ordered, and the staff quickly offered to fix the issue. We visited Shaka Tacoz in 2022 and fell in love with the fish tacos. Fast forward to August 2024! I ordered 3 tacos for $19 and my wife only wanted one which is why there are 4 tacos in the picture. We were NOT disappointed. By far the best fish tacos we've had. It was flavored and cooked perfectly. The fish was fresh and the toppings gave it a great crunch. I chose the mango sauce which was the mildest sauce they had. It was not hot at all and honestly, if they bottled this sauce, I would buy a few bottles to take it back to the mainland. The portions of the tacos were filling. I was starving and I think I can eat a lot () and the 3 tacos filled me up. Also, the girl that helped us was super friendly, and welcoming which was a nice bonus. If you have Yelp, and this is your first time at Shaka Tacoz,, make sure you check in because you get a free drink with your order. You order at the indoor counter and then pick up your food from the truck outside once it's ready. The chicken was really tender and all the ingredients worked well together. Flavors were standard for the taco overall but the sauce was amazing! It's like a mango sauce but spicy. Worked well with the taco. We stopped here thanks to previous Yelp reviews! I'm a sucker for fish tacos and these ones were delicious! My only complaint would be the over use of the pickled onions. There were so many on the tacos! Parking is a little tight. We ended up parking across the street and walking. This can take some time since it's a blind corner or cars coming. Here's the only thing you need to know: The food here is phenomenal. Great and friendly staff. Visually beautiful food. I ordered the new axis deer tacos and ono tacos. Followed by a pork and steak burrito with a cheese skirt like the tacos. Tacos were so good, that I went back and ordered a burrito just so I could try more of the menu. Wow. They had an amazing batch of sauces. I think they were all pretty balanced and not very spicy (even though it says 4/5 and 5/5 spicy level). I had the lava sauce, delicious, and the guava sauce, a little sweet but very good. The mango sauce that comes with the fish tacos i think is way too sweet and has a syrupy consistency thats too much for a taco. Still, overall. This was the last stop on our Big Island trip and oh how I wish it had been our first. We're from Texas so we know good Mexican food and this place was better than most we've been to at home. My wife and I got the Ono Fish Burrito and the mango salsa was the perfect pairing for it. Everything was delicious and incredibly fresh. Kiddos got chicken, Ono, and Molokai venison tacos and each one was fantastic. Literally nothing was less than amazing. The service was great too. We stopped by here on the way back from Hilo and be careful not to miss it on the side of the road! You order inside, pick up ur food at the truck and then can enjoy your meal inside the dining area. While my trip to Hawaii was over 3 months ago, I remember these fish tacos like it was yesterday. There is no question what you should order here: the ono tacoz are absolutely stellar and may just be my new favorite fish taco ever. Despite typically writing off places that self-advertise as the "best tacos" in town, I'm very happy to have made a last-minute exception in this case for our last official meal on the Big Island. Ono has a very ideal texture for grilling with its delicate-yet-flaky flesh -- after trying these, I have to question whether this fish may just be the #1 choice for tacos, making me quite sad that we don't have as easy access to make this a staple back on the mainland. Aside from protein choice, I personally feel that a standout sauce can often be the backbone that escalates tacos to the next level and these came with three: shaka, lime crema and mango chile. While they were all delicious, for me the latter was the most addicting part of the meal that made these tacos taste like actual crack and left me immediately craving more. It adds just the right amount of bright citrusy tang and spice to complement the milder white fish and was so bomb that I was shamelessly licking it out of the container. While the ingredients are relatively simple (especially when compared to certain other Hawaiian chains eg Coconuts), there's honestly no need for a combo of more than 15 different things when you've got a few unique, quality ingredients that just work. Please please please try these tacos while you're on the island and lmk what you think, especially if you're somewhat of a taco snob from California like me :') read more
