Loved Shale Oak. We stopped by midweek around 11:30 am and were able to enjoy the place to ourselves for a while. We asked if we could sit outside on their patio in the shade and the staff was happy to accommodate. The architecture is modern with large geometric stained glass and there is a nice flowing creek on the patio. The staff gave us a little history about how everything is sustainably-built and maintained. Love that. We decided to do the brownie pairing, and Omg, absolutely delicious. Paired wonderfully to bring out the flavors of each wine. Hard to choose a favorite as they were all delightfully different. There were 5 brownie pairings, and then 2 additional wine tastings. We bought a bottle of the Alberino (whites aren't usually my favorite but this was fruity and crisp and I loved it!) and the 2010 Cabernet (always love a good Cab). All-in-all, wonderful experience and would definitely return. read more

I was in town with my girlfriends, a much needed trip! Our last (but not least) stop was Shale Oak. It was the perfect ending to an amazing weekend. We got there at 3pm and stayed until they closed. The manager Joanne gave us a tour and explained how sustainable they are. She poured their delicious wines and was just the perfect hostess. We sat out in the patio, enjoyed our wine and snacks. Joanne talked about the wonderful plans she has to enhance the property and I just cannot wait to come back and see the bocce ball court! They also have a cute gift store, purses, wallets, iPhone covers and anything else u can think of made out of cork material. Needless to say we left Paso with beautiful memories and wonderful wine from Shale Oak. read more

I went to one of their monthly unWINEd "Fireside" events with a Meet-Up group. I thouroughy enjoyed the complimentary wine and cheese pairing with Danika Reed of Vivant Fine Cheese in Paso Robles. My personal favorite pairings were the 2008 Syrah with the BellaVitano Raspberry cheese and the 2008 Cabernet Reserve with the Ewephoria cheese. I love that they sell wines by the glass so you can enjoy a glass while sitting outside. I had a glass of the 2008 Cabernet while getting to know some of the other people in the Meet Up group. We were sitting on the adirondack chairs when a man approached us asking how we liked the chairs. Turns out, he made them, and they are sturdy and comfortable. Next time I'll participate in one of the property tours to learn more about the resource saving practices of this winery. read more

Came here as part of a wine tasting tour for a friend's bday. Was a nice place and was interesting to learn about how eco friendly the place is. Apparently you can plant their menus and they'll grow into something (seeds in paper). Bought a rose I tried off the tasting. Only gripe is that the tasting seemed rushed and some of us didn't get to try some wines because they only had minutes to finish the previous tasting. If you buy a bottle they'll wave the tasting fee! read more

I stumbled on this winery through the magazine 'Vino'. I went to school with some of the gals that work here and decided to give it a whirl. With architecture in sync with the local Eco friendly vibe, Shale Oak gives you more than than that. I came in unbiased, not knowing of their wines and environment and was greeted with a familiar face and was welcomed as part of their wine family. We didn't know we were entering an event called unWINEd, (which happens the last Sunday of each month) without reservation ... $7 4 tastes, 4 pairings from a featured local restaurant. Music was wonderful, but I don't recall the man singing, but he had a wonderful voice. Good Job! Overall a wonderful experience... I love the furniture and the feel of Shale Oak. Shale Oak has one of the most intriguing buildings of any winery I've visited. I found it because I was looking for more wineries that have a single varietal Albariño, probably my favorite white varietal. Shale Oak has a nice spread of different wines, ranging from the crispest whites to dark red blends. I really liked the Albariño and Viognier, and their red blends were excellent. The building itself has large colored glass panels that provide a beautiful atmosphere. The room itself is spacious. The employees were all really nice and knowledgeable about the wine. I'm definitely bringing more people to Shale Oak the next time I'm in the area. read more

I've loved this wine and the winemaker's talents since I first tasted their wines at Sunset's Savor the Central Coast on the first year they had the event here in SLO County. Of all the wines we tasted that day, Shale Oak was by far our favorite find! We especially love the syrah and petit verdot -- they are lovely wines. We recently went to the winery and enjoyed a cheese and wine pairing seminar and that was not only fun but educational. And again, we got to really enjoy some fantastic wines! Curtis the winemaker is very warm and has a great personality, we've really enjoyed getting to know him and talk wine! I cannot recommend this winery and their wines enough-- I didn't even get to talk about the whites, but they were also very nice!!! Tasting room manager Danielle is super friendly and helpful and really makes you feel at home. I truly love tasting rooms where not only the wine and atmosphere is terrific, but the staff are friendly and welcoming! read more

My wife and I have been members at Shale Oak since they opened about 10 years ago, love the architecture and wine and have been back to visit a couple times since we joined. I'm not sure if there's been a change in managment since we last visited two years ago but were dismayed by our visit last week. The architecture is beautiful, modern, and clean but they've added all sorts of cheap signage and other tchotchkes which is out of character with the quality of the buildings. There was disrepair with peeling paint, disheveled dishwasher, and the interior of the building had all sorts of cobwebs and junk stacked up against the interior windows that look into the tasting room. There were boxes stored in the hall to the restrooms and just basically junk everywhere. The most dismaying part was the tasting room staff, some of the worst we've encountered anywhere, with basically no knowledge of the wines they were pouring, just half-heartedly reading off the printed tasting notes. We'll be cancelling our membership when we get home and really hope the winery's ownership can turn the ship around and bring their facilities back up to their former quality, until then we won't be back. read more

Let me first frame the situation in which Shale Oak welcomed us: A group of 9 of us girls came here as part of our bachelorette party excursion. We went to a total of 4 wineries and Shale Oak was our second stop, which also became our lunch spot. So there, Shale Oak already had their work cut out for them. The manager walked up to our Uncorked Wine Tours van as we were scrambling out of it with a tray of glasses with white wine in them to greet our party. Then, she escorted us up the stairs and briefly explained just how special Shale Oak is, which made all of us appreciate where we were standing so much more. We asked her if we could have lunch on the property and she graciously emptied out the back patio area (and people just kept coming outside to help us move tables and umbrellas!) so that our party could set up our lunch and ourselves. One of the guys who worked there came out to pour us our tastings while we were able to sit, chat, and eat. Everyone was SO accommodating and so sweet to us that we couldn't stop talking about Shale Oak all day and even wanted to go back to it! Their wines are also absolutely delectable. Definitely worth a stop on your Paso Robles wine tour! Thank you for making our experience so wonderful and memorable! read more

Jess and I pulled this place up on Ye Olde Trusty Yelp app while looking around. We hadn't heard of it or had it recommended, which is a shame because they defienitly deserve some free press. Danielle and Rachel were working that day, they had some excellent wines and both ladies were engaging and fun to chat with. The tasting room is very bright and cheery, and the back patio is beautiful. But I think what impressed us the most was the steps they take to be so green. They really are an environmentally friendly organization and truly deserve accolades for that alone. But regardless of that, the wines were really good. Shale Oak was the perfect ending to our wine tasting in Paso Robles. The building was so different from the other wineries we went to that day - very modern, comfortable, and chic! We started doing a wine tasting, but remembered that there was a cookie tasting too! The lady started us over with our tasting after we already had to tastes of the white and rose. Trying wine with cookies was tasty and super unique. It gave a different flavor to the wine, and I definitely recommend it! Can't wait to go back to this place sometime soon :) read more
