Sunday night dinner. Inside is a warm inviting atmosphere w/TVs on walls for sports and a roomy area for ordering, so you can stand back and make decisions. Order at counter and delivered to your table. Pleasant counter service - host on receipt was Rex. First visit so it took us a minute. Asked for suggestions and he told us what sold the most or was featured, not what he liked, which is what we wanted to hear. Ordered the Smothered Pork Sandwich combo with green beans and a drink ($12.48), a small rib plate w/fried okra and grilled Brussel sprouts ($13.99) and 6 Boneless Wings with a side of mac & cheese ($7.99). It took a bit longer than I anticipated to get our food. When it was delivered there was no ranch or blue cheese dressing for the wings, and I never did get the food runner's attention. Rex came back to check on us and he brought me 2 individual containers of ranch. Food: sandwich was divine and huge! Green beans were bland, mac & cheese was creamy, Brussel sprouts were cooked nicely though a little oily. Ribs were good and the smoky flavor on the first two ribs was heavenly, but the closer to the end of the small slab I ordered, the tougher they got and the flavor seemed to bland. Not sure why, just did. Fried okra was cooked just right and plentiful. As for the "infamous" wings, I mistakenly ordered them breaded, which is not the way I prefer them. They were okay, but bready and can't be reheated at home. I won't order them again if we return. There was a chicken sandwich on the menu that looked interesting. Everyone was pleasant and the noise level was low. They offer a police/military discount - thank you. The food was good, service was great, however the reason for only three stars was because the floors were sticky, table was semi clean, and the Gnats......... the gnats will NOT let you eat peacefully...... I had to swat them things several times so they would NOT land on my food or drink.......... Food was not good. The best thing about the whole plate was the bbq sauce. Brisket was super dry and overcooked. The Mac was too salty and noodles overcooked. Shane's is a family friendly BBQ restaurant. My husband and I frequent them whenever we have a taste for down south delicious food. Where do I begin, they' re courteous, family friendly, and they serve tasty smoked meats that's lightly marinaded in their " Secret BBQ SAUCE". They have various side dishes you can buy such as :Mac/cheese, fries, okra, and this is just to name a few items. We usually purchase the whole rack of ribs, but they can be purchased in a half- rack also. My husband, loves the smoked 1/2 chicken. It reminds him of him "Grill Master Skills".The ambiance is nice; you can enjoy your meal, while you watch sports on any of their enormous high definition flat screens.When we visit, we often see the owner, who's always assisting in some manner. The food is really good. I've eaten here a few times and they do not disappoint. Don't expect much customer service. The young ladies that were there "working" took my order while playing on the phone at the same time! Wow can you say multitasking? No how about give your paying customers a little more respect than literally puts in an order and scrolling on the phone at the same time. We had to wait on them to even acknowledge us in the first place in an unbusy establishment. They were literally talking and we had to wait for them to finish their conversation before taking our order. Nothing major that couldn't wait. We're just not that important. Since the pandemic, my husband and I have gotten food to go a few from Shane's. They have decent bbq. Yesterday evening we ordered Shane's. The food was good. The only complaint I have is the portion size of the side items. They were placed in a condiment sized clear plastic container and they were not the usual size you would expect a side item to be served in. It was basically four bites of food. Make sure your food is cook because they will argue you down and say it is, and in the long run its not. I ordered food to go, got home and it did not looked cooked at all, like was still slightly pink. I called and the receptionist said i should have called sooner, but they were closed. then i spoke to the owner, who was like ther was no way possible its raw. The food was really good, the pork was delicious, the bake beans good, the coleslaw good, and the fries were a little burn but well. I noticed a lot of low reviews on here but they were from years ago so I decided to give it a try. My wife got a Shack Potato, she liked it but it lacked enough butter. We had to ask for some. She otherwise liked it. I had a 2 Meat Plate with a 1/2 Chicken and the smoked wings. The chicken was juicy enough. The smoked wings had a distinctly different flavor because they are put on the grill and have grill marks. I liked them and would get them again. The teriyaki sauce I had on the side wasn't that great. Thank God I had that sauce put on the side. The baked beans were really good. The macaroni and cheese was just ok, nothing special. Now, you're probably wondering why I am giving it 3 stars instead of 4 or 5. You have to get your own silverware which come in plastic bags like to-go plates. It put me off a bit. They can do better. The sauces at the table were ok, nothing special. I prefer heated sauce on my bbq. One of the 3 TVs was out, and one was so old the color had gone out so it looked distorted. Not exactly appealing. Ole reliable! Shane's has been around since I was a kid and has never failed to satisfy. I will say that the ribs are a little too fatty for me. But the bbq pork is off the chain. I went to Shane's for the 1st time yesterday (June 18, 2017) the location is a bit far from New Orleans city limits. Once I arrived the cashier was on the phone and not once did she acknowledge me and just say she'll be right with me or anything. 2nd one of the demon who works there smoke so she had an unfinished cigarette on the counter near a cell phone. Plain view! I order the half pound rib plate with baked beans and okra. The fried okra was still soft and wasn't that tasty. The baked beans were ok, I've had better. The ribs really were good. They came out hot and tender. Bbq sauce is on the table so you put it on yourself. If you are worried about African Americans working there your in for a treat, non works there. The venue was clean they have fountain drinks with different teas. I spent over $30 there and I didnt get really get $30 worth of food and service. The females who work there just look as if they sick of being there. They were dry about everything. I'm sorry but they lost a customer with me. I won't be returning. Horrible food. The okra was soggy. The tea tastes bitter. No one checked on the table. I asked for to-go box. It took 10 mins for the girl to finally realize she forgot. The table behind us was complaining how the food isn't the same. I ate at a Shane's in Georgia over two years ago and it was delicious. "NORMALLY" Shane' s would get 1000 stars from me because it's been my local "go-to" for local bbq. New Orleans is not world-renown for bbq and Shane's normally filled my empty spot but last night was different. My wife ordered chicken and it just didn't look right. Maranade was running all over the plate and was cold. She sent it back and was enjoying her okra and Mac and cheese about the time I dug into my ribs and they were refrigerators cold. I went back to the register to get a refund now and I received a "half-hearted" appology. You know, I'm not really sure what I expected of Shane's. I've driven past it hundreds of times and never really had any desire to eat there. It's probably because it's a Rib Shack and I'm not necessarily a big rib fan. Anyway, my family was (unfortunately) shopping at Walmart last week, and we decided to grab a bite to eat afterwards. After not being able to come up with any other suggestions, I figured "why not try Shane's Rib Shack?" It was decided. I'm not sure why I expected it to be a full-service restaurant, but I did. Upon walking in, I learned that the set up is similar to that of New Orleans Hamburger and other restaurants, where you place your order, you are given a number, and then you wait for it to be brought to the table. Drinks are refilled on your own, and they have a number of condiments/utensils available at the drink station. The food was good, but I've had better.... everything. My daughter had the chicken tender kids meal. Those seemed to be lacking in any sort of seasoning. My boyfriend had a pulled pork sandwich topped with coleslaw. He said it tasted like every other pulled pork sandwich - nothing special. I figured I would get the sampler, and try a little of everything. The pork was good, the ribs were okay, the chicken tenders needed some seasoning, and truthfully, I can't even remember what else came with this. It wasn't anything memorable. We may go back and give it a 2nd chance, but really, unless we are in the area and need a quick bite, I don't see that happening. There are just too many other places that do BBQ better. read more

Is this what passes for BBQ in the New Orleans Area?? Never again....once was enough. Was in the area during mid-day and was hunting some BBQ for lunch. Checked out Yelp! and found Shane's Rib Shack about a mile away from my location. Now...anyone who patrons BBQ joints as much as I knows that when you walk in, you should smell the sweet aroma of wood smoke and cooked meat. Walking in and NOT smelling BBQ was the first sign that this place wouldn't live up to my expectations. I ignore my better judgment and step to the counter. I chat with the gentleman behind the counter and tell him it was my first time there and ask for any recommendations. Although I was the only one in line, I felt rushed to order. He quickly named a few items (in what I took as a NYC accent) and I ended up deciding on the brisket plate with an order of their fried pickle wedges. Well it didn't take too long to receive my food, but here's where it all went wrong. First off, I'd like to say that the fried pickle spears were decent, but by the look of the batter and the way they tasted, it seemed like they were bought pre-frozen. The supposedly 'in-house' cole slaw was ordinary by most people's terms. There was nothing that made it seem any different from every cole slaw I've ever had before. The baked beans tasted like they were scooped from a can directly to my plate, disappointed. On to the main attraction...The brisket was served as four or five slices of dry, tasteless meat, and when I say 'dry', I'm referring to the preparation and time cooked and not the fact that is was served without sauce. It was knife tough and not easily bent or pulled apart. There wasn't even the slightest hint of a smoke ring and tasted like it never hit a pit at all. I got the impression it was done in the oven, double disappointed. I tried to dress up my brisket to make it edible with their selection of three sauces; the regular sauce, the mustard one and the spicy one (forgive me if I can't remember the correct names). This was the final disappointment. I've never actually tasted BBQ sauces like this; they would be more at home on buffalo wings rather than BBQ. They all three seriously tasted like buffalo wing sauce.... Unlike most BBQ sauce that is tomato paste based, I don't know what was in this stuff besides vinegar. My suspicion is that there is one sauce and they just add spice to make the 'spicy' and add mustard to make the 'mustard'. Worst excuse for a BBQ joint or 'rib shack' I've ever seen, and it's overpriced by what I'm accustomed to paying for BBQ. I usually pick better places to eat, I surely regret this pick. Not only does the restaurant mislead and misrepresent what you are going to receive with your burger (shows FF) what 99% of businesses in NOLA combine the 2!!? It does give the option for a combo but it is in reference to a beverage. The burger I ordered was also charred also small area of the bun. Talk about NO taste and toooo DRY it was Ike being choked. The franchisee son J. got on the phone, and while he may be a nice person, was completely inept at being a manager, with ZERO customer service or management skills or training!!! Horrible technique. A half lame apology instead of trying to make the situation correct and possibly RETAINING a customer's trust these current times!!! The brisket sandwich was also ordered and welllllll......SMH!!! How anyone, even a line person who made this atrocity could wrap this up and throw this in the box to a customer should be fired!!! They would NEVER want their food like this!! The sandwich was missing a whole corner of meat!! It was on 2 pieces of Texas toast! The end! Frisbee material!!! I could not believe the weird taste the smokiness flavor had and when I mentioned that I got a double talk story about availability of the correct smoke woods they use blah, blah, blah!!!! If you KNOW you are selling an INFERIOR product STOP till this can be corrected to save the integrity of your restaurant, apparently this was not a concern....again back to the un-skilled management. Was going out for a steak, but decided I didn't have too much time so I pulled into this place without ever having heard of it (I'm not from around here). Got a rack of ribs (afterall, it is a "rib shack"). They were pretty good, not the best in the world, but well cooked, and not too heavy on sauce (they have a few sauces if you choose to add your own). For sides I got fried okra (can never resist) which was good, and beans which were pretty average. The texas toast or whatever was ok, nothing special, but with all the ribs I didn't need 2 slices of toast anyways. For a moderately priced restaurant with pretty quick service I think they did pretty good. read more

This 'cue joint is about what you expect from a Barbecue Chain. The decor goes for the whole "shack" look, but is definitely far too clean, bright, and refined to truly pull it off. Compared to some 'cue joints visited, clean and bright are not meant as a bad thing. It is about the same as every joint - you order at the counter, and the food is brought out to your table. The staff was very friendly and competent, assisting with questions about the menu. I ordered the Shack Sampler (1/4 Rack of Baby Back Ribs, 2 Tenders, 1/4 lb of BBQ Pork or BBQ Chicken -the menu online sez "or Beef Brisket (add a $1.00)" - this was not on the wall menu) and a small fountain drink. The restaurant appeared to be quite clean, with the staff running around and cleaning after the lunch rush, including the windows. The table where I sat down had an issue with "gumminess" - which is typically the softening of the varnish/coating on the wood due to certain types of solvents or an uncured finish. While not a dirty table, the stickiness of the surface was not pleasant. Time for the important stuff, like the food and whatnot... As far as the food, I ordered the Sampler with Ribs, Tenders, Pork, Coleslaw, and Mac and Cheese. THE MEATS! RIBS - The ribs are Baby Backs, and had a lot of meat to them. The smoke flavor was very light/mild. The taste and texture of the Ribs would lead me to believe they were finished on the grill with a sauce. The meat itself was fall-off-the-bone (some would consider them to be overdone), and it not appear to have much along the lines of a Dry Rub. CHOPPED PORK - The Chopped Pork was decent, and a touch on the dry side, which is probably more of a function of the time I went - after the lunch rush. It was fine with a little bit of sauce (and gave me an excuse to try all the sauces). Definitely serviceable, but not in the top tier. CHICKEN TENDERS - This is where things went horribly, horribly wrong. These are not barbecued, but rather fried. The first Chicken Tender I took a bit of was raw in the center - noticeably pink with running blood. This, unfortunately is a huge pet peeve of mine, so it definitely hurt the trip. I provided them to the counter as I left, as I did not want to eat after that. The woman at the counter was bringing them back to the kitchen as I left, which hopefully corrected the issue. SAUCES - They were all pretty standard barbecue sauces. The South Carolina Mustard was decent representation, without much flavor. The Original Sauce was a standard tomato-vinegar flavor, but not very much tanginess (this is from a big fan of NC-style sauce). The Honey BBQ seemed like a sweeter version of the Original, with the Spicy also using the same base with an extra kick. I did not see the Sizzlin' sauce on my visit. THE SIDES! COLESLAW - It was a standard Creamy Slaw recipe, with shredded cabbage and carrots. Pretty good stuff. MACARONI AND CHEESE - It was decent, although a little less on the creamy side than one would like. It was not broken, so definitely an improvement over other local 'cue joints. This may be another victim of the post-lunch rush dining experience. THE IMPORTANT STUFF! RESPONSE FROM THE OWNER (Which is pretty solid!) - I had two problems - the Chicken Tenders and the Gummy Tables. I sent a comment to the restaurant via the website, and the owner promptly responded to request more information about the problems. The undercooked chicken was hopefully a fluke - but one he would make sure was not repeated. He also said the restaurant would address the tables, and had a good understanding of the issue. He also offered to compensate me for the meal (thus far declined). OVERALL! I must say (with the big exception of the chicken) this joint is a decent value, and a solid chain in the Greater New Orleans area. Discounting the chicken, I would put them between Stonewall's BBQ and Voodoo BBQ (not much love for Voodoo). That said, it is still not in the same league as the local Pitmaster-Run 'Cue Joints. The staff was friendly, immediately went to address my chicken issue, and the owner promptly responded as well. But, once again, the Chicken Tenders (not even 'cue!) are the big problem. While this would typically warrant a One Star review (with complaints it didn't go lower), and I swore I would never go back before the owner responded, his attention to the problems kicks it up to at least a solid TWO STARS. I ordered a combo plate, and for a franchised chain, I thought they could 1) have a consistent menu or 2) if they could give this guy some help. I mean they show chicken strips from restaurants across the area, and then they show Shane's chicken fingers. Which by the way are the worst I've ever had. Everything was decent on the platter but the tenders--which should have "cool to 165", DO NOT OVERCOOK printed on the side of the bag. No kidding, eating the chicken (which looked like it was on steroids from the get go) was like taking a bite from my friend's biceps. Colonel Sanders they are not.
