Shanghai is a PT institution with super friendly owners and many tasty dishes. But it's especially my go-to for one dish in particular. Whenever I'm feeling a bit sick I always get their Wor Wonton Soup. It's a chicken broth base, with perfectly cooked shrimp, added pork, added veg (broccoli, onions) and of course chicken and the pork wontons. It's awesome. What's happened to this place? I used to love their food & had my favorites, but just a few days ago I ordered the War wonton soup & MuShu Pork, which I used to love. And it was awful. The meat in both items was hard to chew & parts of it tasted undercooked. I ended up throwing most of it away. Basically, that was $38 down the drain. I won't be going back! So sad! read more

Ambiance would honestly be my only complaint. I wouldn't go after dark ever again. The interior with its high ceilings is painted white. The light fixtures (which are lovely) have high wattage bulbs. The effect is reminiscent of a high school cafeteria. The food was great. I would definitely go back for lunch. We had the egg rolls, pot stickers, egg drop soup, pork fried rice, and the shanghai special sesame seed beef and ALL dishes were DELICIOUS. Service was excellent and this is my favorite Chinese restaurant I have found in the PNW since moving from another state 14 years ago. I actually gave up on Chinese restaurants in Washington and Oregon, but we stumbled across this one and gave it a try, and was surprised how amazing all the dishes are. I will drive three hours just to eat here again. I am jealous of everyone that lives in Port Townsend, because they could eat here as often as they would like. I highly recommend going here to eat- you won't be disappointed!!!! read more

My son and I are big fans of Shanghai Chinese! One of the owners (and chefs) always comes out to crack a few jokes with my 12-year-old son and goes out of his way to customize our order (my son dislikes vegetables so the chef always asks him exactly how many carrots he wants in his sweet and sour chicken, and he also adds my favorite fried tofu to the garlic beans dish I always get). This last visit, he went over the top and created incredible food art on our plate (see pic below). And of course, the food is delicious-! read more

This place has been upgraded -- we were really impressed. Definitely the best on the peninsula. Pot stickers are hand-made and pan-fried like they should be, specials are handwritten and change often. We had the special salt and pepper tofu which was both delicate and flavorful. The Shanghai beef with sesame -- flavorful, velvety goodness. I do recommend you actually order Chinese food (as opposed to the Thai they have) as they're really good at it. Authentic Chinese food in Port Townsend. Color me impressed. Is it exactly like "when I lived in China" Chinese food? No. Is it miles ahead of any other Chinese place I've gone to in WA? Yes. The sauce is light, but flavorful. Not overpowering. The rice wasn't soggy and overcooked, everything came out STEAMING hot (just ask my palate), and it was obviously freshly made. Veggies were crisp and colorful and I can The owner was friendly, engaging, and as we were the only table in the back bar area, allowed us to sit and eat quickly since we were catching a ferry. We were little piggies so we got three of the lunch specials - General Tso (because you always get that to gauge), a pork and veggie dish, and beef with broccoli. Honestly, they were all really good and the portions were huge. I have seen some reviews complaining about "tasteless" fried rice, but that's really what "fried rice" is like in China. I also didn't feel like my gut a) had a brick in it or b) going to explode after eating it. It was a lovely stroll down a gastronomic memory lane, and I'm so glad we were turned away by the place next door. It's definitely on one of my places to revisit! read more

Love the new kid play zone here! It is tucked back in other room so you don't have to worry about your children bugging other people. Lots of different toys. My daughter is entertained the whole Lunch and usually takes a break to eat some yummy fried rice! Lunch specials are very affordable and come with soup, wonton, fried rice and egg roll. read more

Jason and his family for a great job serving up excellent dishes, six-days a week (not Wednesday) until 8:30 PM (a wickedly late hour for a restaurant here in PT). This restaurant has improved considerably in the past year or so, perhaps with the younger generation able to pay more attention to detail and careful quality control. My favorite dishes are the generous well browned potstickers served with a rich mixed hot pepper dipping sauce, the hot and sour soup rich with seasoned pork, silken tofu, and egg among the fungi and bamboo shoots. I shouldn't even put one star for this place. I haven't been there for 3 1/2 years and we were told and I quote "you can sit here all night but you're not going to be served." I walked into the kitchen and it was so dirty. The owner was extremely rude. I've eaten here before and the food is terrible. A random drive to Port Townsend. It appears the city starts to shut down around 5pm. Highly recommend that ypu make reservations when you visyo the city if you think you'll be around for dinner time. Under new ownership, they have a survey on site, looking for tips from the customers. Pictures of of the family meal for 6. He food has a good flavor, but nothing over the top. Our "extended" family of six adults and six children had an OUTSTANDING dinner recently at the Shanghai! We were all able to celebrate my hubby's birthday with an amazing, delicious, multi-choice meal in one of the Shanghai's 'side rooms'--which includes a wonderful kid's play area with lots of toys and activities to keep them busy in-between courses. This place is a hidden gem for sure and worth the hunt right on the waterfront. Great food, clean, fresh attentive wait staff. The chef's preparation of the food was terrific and well presented. I had the twice cooked pork and my husband had the lunch special which was a stir fry halibut. Great portions, I had left overs to take and was quite pleased about that.
