Everything from the delivery service to the bland yet greasy food (that had a bit of a funky smell/taste from the plastic container) was less than mediocre. They also didn't include napkins or utensils with the delivery, which was my first time experiencing this with any kind of food delivery service (except maybe pizza). Before Covid, we were regulars at Shanghai-Tokyo and the food was always excellent and we never had a problem once in the approximately ten years we had dined there regularly. When Covid stared up, we decided we would support them and order take out. The menu had been greatly reduced and many of our favorites were not there, but we chose several items. Every dish was mediocre at best and disappointing - we were appalked. I did not write a review at that time because of our past history of many years with them and we thought perhaps Covid might have been responsible for the disaster that evening. We decided to give them another chance yonight and ordered a large meal tonight costing ca.$75.00 and it was just as disappointing. Most dishes tasted overcooked and they were nothing special at all. The worse was their Pad Thai, which I had never ordered before. It had absolutely no taste and had soft, mushy (canned?) shrimp instead of large shrimp with some texture and flavor. There was no taste of peanut and the spice from the sweet vinegar sauce of a Pad Thai that is usually served on this dish was non-existent, To the owner and chef: I encourage you to try the Pad Thai at Amarin of Thailand on Grove Street in Wellesley to see how a Pad Thai should taste. We threw the Pad Thai out after eating less than 1/16 of the dish and have decided never to return there again. read more

Shanghai Tokyo then proceeded to: - forget to tell us the final price - charge us more than the listed price - forget parts of the order - forget the receipt - refused to answer the phone for 10 minutes when we called to ask about the missing food and receipt - once they finally answered, transferred us three times - came back to deliver us the receipt without the missing items -laughed and would not listen to us as we explained our frustrations - scoffed at our 22% tip If you could tolerate any of this, their scallion pancakes are decent. Food is okay, but not great. Some dishes are better than others and when you order takeout, the food is always hot and the order accurate. The prices for their dishes have increased substantially of late, but this is not gourmet Chinese food even though their prices are comparable. This is our absolute favorite Chinese food in Metrowest. The staff (especially the owners) are very friendly and always say hi and ask how our kids are, and truly appreciate our business. Very disappointed. Ordered house fried rice and it was very bland the shrimp tasted like it was out of a can. I wanted to order a single egg roll as I am one person and cannot eat two FRIED egg rolls and the lady at the counter flat out refused and said I could not order just a single egg roll! I believe they charge $4.95 for two, well charge me $3.00 for one what difference does it make other than to squeeze as much profit as possible out of a customer? Because of this and the bad shrimp, I will not be back, they have lost a customer. I honestly would rather leave one star but the service was quick so they get a bump. Too many good places to dine in with a very competitive Chinese/Japanese business not to take care of each and every customer. Instead, selling me an extra egg roll was worth losing my business. I'm going to go with "A-OK". Shanghai staff is polite but was a bit short with me when I arrived to place a to-go order. They aren't set up for waiting so I left and came back for my crab rangoon and egg roll. The rangoon were very bland. I was missing that scallion bite I look for in a decent fake crab puff. It came with some pretty terrible sweet and sour sauce as well. Our egg rolls were 3/4 fried to 1/4 egg roll fillings which was a bit disappointing. Was it horrible? No, not at all. Did I love it? My son asked to come here, he tells me they have the best Peking ravioli ever. Oh, please! As if a mere 17 year old could possibly tell me where the best Peking ravioli come from! OK, I guess maybe he can. I might have had dumplings this good before, but I don't think I've had them better. We got the fried, not the steamed. They were a little smaller than I'm used to, which turned out making them easier to eat exactly half in one bite. Now I'm afraid regular dumplings re going to be too big from now on. The menu is in two sections; the Chinese menu, and the Japanese menu that has all the sushi on it. I'll have to go back to try the sushi, we went Chinese this time, everything was top rate. I did go Japanese for my drink, I got the sake, served warm, delicious, served elegantly in a matching cup and serving flask. I do wish that flask was a little bigger, I suppose it was probably the proper size, but the only only other place I've gotten sake in served it in a bigger flask. Maybe it was more expensive, I don't recall. I just like by drinks bigger in general is what I'm saying. Maybe that's because I'm used to eating like an American glutton, and I'm not ready for proper, civilized portions? Maybe I'll just order two next time. It's in an ugly strip mall between a Dunkin Donuts and a dirty looking Tedeshci's, but it's a nice, new, clean looking place inside. Very nice atmosphere, small and intimate, casual, but not a bad place to take a date. I only saw one table that looked like it could seat more than two people, so if you're going with a group, better call ahead and see if they'll take a reservation. Came here alone tonight to have Steph time, study time and sushi time. It has been perfect. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with polite servers and delicious food. Now I have never actually been to the physical location of Shanghai Tokyo but I order delivery from here all the time. I love me some chinese food and when I decide I want it, I need to have it. The hours here are great because I can get that fix even if I decide I want it at 8:45. I usually order the chicken teriyaki dinner which provides so much food I always have leftovers. You get chicken over noodles with a side of rice, a small salad and miso soup. That's a lot of food for $15! The noodles are actually my favorite part, I don't know what they're called or what sauce they're in but I could eat them forever. Hot or cold. However, make sure you specify that you want the chicken teriyaki dinner because I've made that mistake before and got the appetizer by default, and let me just say. It is not a thing anyone wants to eat. I also get sushi from here often, but seeing as I think fish is icky and don't even slightly see the appeal of eating it raw, I order the vegetarian sushi. I love me some Sweet Potato Tempura and that's a staple in my order. It's always good, albeit sometimes a little chillier than I had hoped. But I like to chalk that up to delivery time. The prices here are in line with most other Chinese/Japanese restaurants I've experienced and the delivery time is really fast. They say 40 minutes and they show up in 15. The food is okay for the burbs, not as authentic as one would get. But nevertheless, some of the dishes are tasty. The problem with this restaurant is its identity crisis. Shanghai Tokyo is my favorite Chinese food in Natick. It also has good sushi, but it is a bit pricey. My pick for the Chinese cuisine is the crispy sesame baby shrimp. The sauce is delicious and the shrimp is always crispy. With the lunch special, it comes with fried rice and an appetizer. The fried rice is tasty. I recommend the crab rangoon. It is the best crab rangoon that I have ever had and the sauce it comes with is amazing. For sushi, I enjoy the volcano roll. It's not too spicy, but packs a little punch. The staff is so friendly and considerate; they'll go out of their way to accomodate you and will remember you every time you go back. The fried rice is HANDS-DOWN the best I have ever had anywhere and I have has a lot of fried rice. The fish they use in the sushi is always so fresh and delicious it has made it difficult for me to eat sushi anywhere else! Almost every sushi roll is above average ( except for maybe the spider roll-- too much lettuce) but I would 100% suggest their black dragon roll. The pan-fried noodles are amazing and the fried chicken is addictive, great seaweed salad and sweet and sour chicken. Having lived in the Metrowest area for over 5 years now, I can honestly say that Shanghai Tokyo has consistently provided great food, excellent service, and a friendly attitude. We like most everything we have tried, but the absolute favorites are Hot and Sour soup, spicy scallop maki, New York maki (with julienned apple inside, really awesome). We usually ask how long for delivery, and will go pick it up when it gets really busy. Unlike many others that have moved out here from the city in the last decade, we have not missed any of the Chinese/Japanese offerings of Cambridge and Boston (but for perhaps shao-long bao in Chinatown). A confession: we probably order from Shanghai Tokyo at least twice a month...and as I said in the beginning, it has been consistently wonderful for the last 5 years. read more

My son and I ate here after searching for a good place to eat. The reviews on Yelp were some of the best, so we tried it. Clean, relaxing atmosphere, soft music and lighting. We were tended to quickly and the food was some of the best I have had in a Chinese/Japanese restaurant! The crab rangoons were amazing! Very solid establishment in Natick center. The parking can be a bit frustrating if the lot is full, but luckily we didn't have that problem. We got there early enough where we sat down right away. My family and I have always been regulars here and tonight to celebrate my 14 year old Son's Middle School graduation we were disappointed. They no longer have iced tea but just soda and water for drinks. Their food has gone considerably downhill. Their soup was not served hot at all and oh by the way..we were noticing the guy at the front desk handing out samples of their ice cream to kids, adults coming in for take-out,,whether they were samples or not I have no clue but they looked rather small! We were sitting right there next to the front desk and saw that and did they offer my kids any samples after we ate? No! I am sorry but when your dining inn guests see that you are giving other kids free ice cream shouldn't you have offered it to us as well?? All we got were the yucky typical fortune cookies. To be honest, I was skeptical about ordering from a place that serves both Chinese and Japanese. But after reading through online reviews of Chinese restaurants in the area, I decided this one was worth a try. I'm glad that I gave it a shot, because I've ordered take-out from here twice and have been very pleased. Their crab rangoon is the best I've had up here, and their flat-noodle lo-mein is really good (I don't even really like lo-mein, but my boyfriend gets it and I ended up stealing some of his). When I first discovered this place a few years ago, I thought it was going to be expensive since the decor seemed upscale for Natick's standards. The food came out and was presented greatly! My friend and I were dining in and even he was impressed and he's hard to impress! The waitress came over after a while and said it was near closing time but for us to "take our time" no hurry for us to finish. She said she would stay until we were done! Unreal! Shanghai I love you. You turned my immature like for sushi into a full blown love affair. I started to dabble in sushi a bit, but I hate paying big bucks for something I might not like, so most sushi places are out of bounds for me. This place has great sushi and more importantly, it's affordable and I don't have to drive all the way the hell into the city to get it. I am pretty sure they get their fish orders on Thursday, so I probably wouldn't go there on a Wed or Thursday for sushi. We've eaten the spicy hamachi, eel, tempura shrimp and scorpion rolls. I've also gotten the chicken fingers and scallion pancake. All were so good. It's a pretty small place (maybe 15 tables more or less on top of eachother. The service is great. The parking lot is a bit of a pain in the ass since it's in a strip mall (next to a Dunkin') with maybe 15 spots outside. 4 beers and 4 rolls came up to about $45. My only real complaint about this place is that the booths are pretty uncomfortable if you're there for more than an hour. Shanghai, don't change anything other than maybe putting fabric on your booths. Please don't raise prices. You've got a good thing going on here. read more

We are long time customers, over 10 years and we love the food, everything has been good whether we order Chinese or Sushi. Your delivery people are great and our food is always at our door long before you say it will be. We have never had a problem with our order until tonight. We ordered Volcano Maki, Snow Mountain Maki and spicy tuna( it's our usual order) I was sitting next to my husband, I heard what he ordered, but when we got our order it wasn't right, no snow mountain maki( my favorite) in its place was a dragon maki( I think). I heard the woman repeat the order back to my husband when he called the order in. The mistake was on their part. My husband called back, just to say it was the wrong order and the woman on the phone argued with my husband, told him he was wrong about what he ordered. I could hear her speaking rather rudely and loud.There were no apologies on her part. We are both in shock, we have never been treated rudely by this establishment and have always enjoyed their food, service has always been excellent, hoping this woman was just having a bad night and this will not become the new normal. I lived on this food in college and my only regret is that no amount of begging will get them to deliver to my apartment in Fenway. This Chinese/Japanese restaurant is small and ideal if you're looking for an intimate setting. I wouldn't recommend going with a big group, but it's great for a date or a small group of people. Because it's so small though it is sometimes difficult to tune out the conversations of those around you which can be especially annoying when the Natick high school kids are loudly babbling about their latest production of Our Town in the next booth. The Chinese food is great (I personally recommend the crab rangoons) and very well priced. There is a full sushi menu but I haven't had anything from it so I can't comment on anything other than the speed with which it arrives at the table -- fantastic! The waitstaff is extremely friendly and accommodating. What's particularly impressive is that no matter how packed the restaurant is, I've never waited long for food to be brought out (I've waited longer for McDonald's). read more
