Area is to the right has several tables and chairs. Coffee machine is on the counter. They sell lotto tickets. The market is also convenient for guests who are staying at the Alameda Hotel Apartments. I noticed a side door leading to the lobby of the hotel/apartment. Minor drawback and no big deal: Only one brand of bottled water ($1.50). Purchase: bottle of water and two triple 777 lotto scratch off tickets. First time for me to buy lotto scratch offs at another location than Santos Liquors. I can smile as I won $15 on one of the tickets...cha ching. Street parking is a little difficult in this area. Public transportation (AC Transit 51A) is close by. Return trip: yes, bus ride to the area to buy more scratch offs and have fun with my walking ventures.

Standing there watching customer after customer who came after me receive service while I was left waiting brought up an awful feeling, one that, frankly, reminded me of stories and images of Black people being treated as though they had to wait while white customers were served first in the South during the 1950s. I was the first customer in line. My purchase had already been rung up and paid for, and I asked that my food be warmed, something this store routinely does. Instead of completing my service, the cashier continued helping customers who came after me. After 5 minutes, several customers were being served while I was still standing there waiting. It was not just the delay. Her demeanor and body language made me feel as though my presence and my business were an inconvenience. That was especially disturbing because I live in this is community and pay $26,000 per year in property taxes. I am not an outsider. I cannot tell you what was in anyone's heart or claim to know their intent. But I can tell you how I was treated and how it made me feel. As the only Black customer standing there watching white customers who arrived after me repeatedly receive service, the experience was deeply uncomfortable, humiliating, and unacceptable. When I finally inquired about the time, she responded hostile, the situation escalated publicly in front of the other customers rather than being handled professionally and respectfully. She acted like the victim, as if she was being threatened. I support businesses in this neighborhood, and I deserve the same dignity, courtesy, and customer service as everyone else who walks through that door. This was more than poor customer service. It was an experience that made me feel unwelcome in my own neighborhood, and this store needs to seriously examine how this was handled. I don't recommend this store. At least Safeway Montclair will treat everyone with respect regardless of their skin color.
