I walked into my first class like a total creep mouse, scared to death that it would be full of high level practitioners with tons of ego who would scoff at my ineptitude. Yeah, it was literally nothing like that. From the moment I walked in, everyone there made me feel incredibly welcome. Yes, there are a ton of high level folks (along with newbies of course), but they are enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge with you. The instructors are fantastic teachers, as well as genuinely kind, encouraging people. I am now completely addicted and feel as if my week is not quite complete unless I've had at least three BJJ classes (preferably more) and two HMT classes. I've also dragged my son into it, and it's the first extra curricular activity in his life he's never complained about. Highly recommend this school.

Initially, I was exploring different martial arts gyms for my 3-year-old daughter. While my daughter was pretty wary and didn't want to commit, I got a really good feeling the first time we observed the class and decided to join - And my gut feeling was right! There are three things that I love most about this gym: 1. People. Everyone, from the professors/coaches to the peers, are wonderful. The professors are all super friendly, approachable, and are always great at answering questions. The peers are respectful and not overly aggressive (in a hurtful-injury kinda way), and the upper belts are always happy to give pointers when asked (or when I look desperately clueless). I'll admit that I find grappling sports extremely intimidating, but everyone at the gym is so kind that I was able to continue going despite feeling super intimidated. Also, there are so many students, but the professors always remember people's names. That's amazing! Big shout out to Professor Dana, Professor Rafael, and Professor Thiago for being awesome. 2. The environment. The physical environment is clean, but more importantly, I find the (non-physical) environment incredibly welcoming. There are areas for kids to hang out when parents are taking classes, plenty of chairs and sofa, and staff are just so, so kind and nice to the kids!! As a mom who's hoping to get her 3-yo interested in bjj, I really appreciate this set up. 3. The classes. There are morning classes, middle-of-the-day classes, evening classes, and Saturday classes. There are classes for kids, teens, adults, and FEMALES. This variety allows me to attend classes with a wonky work schedule and learn from different professors and peers. More importantly, the classes are very organized, such that when I attend classes almost randomly throughout the week, different professors are all teaching similar techniques that build off of a streamlined curriculum, and I don't feel that I must attend classes on a regular schedule (e.g., M/W at 6:30am). I also love that there are position-specific training toward the latter part of every class. It's intimidating, but I learn a lot from these practices! I guess I could go on, but I'll just say that I highly recommend this gym!

My son has been training BJJ at Clinch Academy for about two years…read more It was an instant hit. We had been play-wrestling since he was practically a baby, so he loved it from day one. The changes we've seen have been incredible--endurance, posture, grip strength, balance, coordination, and overall body composition. In many ways, BJJ reminds me of gymnastics in how well it develops a child's entire body and creates a foundation that transfers into other sports. But the biggest change has been his confidence. He was a little shy and not always confident around other kids. Today, he is much more comfortable with himself, stays calm under pressure, stands up for himself, and even helps his friends when they're being picked on. That's what I love about BJJ. It doesn't teach kids to become bullies--quite the opposite. It teaches confidence without arrogance, strength without aggression, respect, discipline, and self-control. My wife was a little skeptical when I first chose BJJ for him. It didn't take long for her to understand why. The Rinehart family and the coaches are a huge part of what makes Clinch special. They reinforce many of the same values we're trying to teach our kids at home. And the coaching is excellent. Coach Josh brings a different level of intensity, especially on Saturdays. Mini one-on-one challenges, live rolling, fitness drills--hard work! It's probably my favorite class to watch because you can literally see the kids being pushed outside their comfort zones. Coach Jhondy is another great example for these kids. He actually started at Clinch as a kid himself and now coaches the next generation. The in-house and outside tournaments have also been great for my son--learning to manage nerves, compete, win, lose, and come back better. Most importantly, he's made real friendships at Clinch, including kids he spends time with outside the gym. I wish I had started BJJ myself at his age. I don't see this as just another childhood sport. I see Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu becoming a lifelong companion for my son. Choosing Clinch Academy has been one of the best decisions we've made for him.

The difference between a big chain gym and a family-owned gym is that when you're a member at Clinch, you are family. The owners, staff, coaches, even other members genuinely care about each other and every person that walks in the front door, no matter your age, size, fitness or skill level. They are versatile, with a variety of classes for kids and adults, encouraging, positive, friendly, and welcoming. Personally, I have had some challenges since becoming a member that I could not have gotten through without them. When I miss a class, I'm not just missing an opportunity to workout, I'm missing Clinch... something else I never thought I'd say about a gym.

Coach Jason as well as his coaching staff are excellent at teaching school age children and challenging them to be their best. The class incorporates the right amount of structure, discipline, physical fitness, and fun. There is always a good number of coaches on the mats so that each child can receive additional personalized guidance. Students are evaluated individually and promoted accordingly you won't get an eleven-year black belt here everything is earned not given. In addition to the awesome training environment the coaches are amazing human beings. Battlefield Jiu Jitsu has fundraisers and donates to charitable causes.
