Ribs, brisket, and jalapeño sausage. Let's eat!
    Garry H.

Well, 6 years later, and there is still a story. An engineer from Israel is working on a project in my plant. He said take me somewhere really good. Galveston Seafood, an hour wait. Beehive steak, an hour wait. Lytle Land & Cattle, hour wait. Sharon's BBQ was packed, but they got us in. All 3 of us got the large combo, ribs, brisket, and jalapeño sausage. A LOT of meat on this plate! I piled the sides high, especially the jalapeño corn. The homemade bread and cornbread, regular and jalapeño, is always a hit with everyone. It's all good, but my favorite is the ribs. Big and meaty, just like they should be! We all enjoyed our meal, especially since it went on his company credit card! Give Sharon's a try, you might like it!

Okay folks, we're averaging here. From a party of 3 one of us felt an overall rating of 3 stars was appropriate based only on his meal, the other two of us felt 1 star was possibly generous. I'll break it down for y'all. We'll hit the high notes first. 2 meat plate: brisket & jalapeno sausage. Ordered by the least picky of us. He said he thought everything was good, nothing was great. The jalapeno sausage has a bit of bite without being overwhelming. Sr. Plate: ribs. Ordered by one of the pickiest. (Title of actual pickiest is debatable, but we both know good when we get it!) Ribs were very dry & lacked flavor. So dry it was almost like jerky, but without the taste. Sandwich: Chopped brisket & jalapeno sausage. I asked them to chop the sausage in with the brisket. What I got was slices of sausage on top of chopped brisket. Not quite what I wanted, but it was still pretty good. I added their regular BBQ sauce, pickles, & onions. I'd eat this & only this again for a quick lunch. The sides: in a word, bad. Potato salad is okay, but that's where the positivity ends. Beans had no flavor at all. Cornbread was so dry it was regretfully inedible. I ordered mac & cheese as the side with my sandwich. Big mistake. Big. Huge. They said they'd bring it... ... ... finally it appeared. I kid y'all not it was a bowl of microwaved easy mac. It was terrible. I didn't even eat two bites & I'm a mac&cheese addict. So, overall just not good.

In Abilene to visit family and they said Sharon's was a must. Glad we went! Great little place with complete BBQ menu. Between the 4 of us, we shared the combo platters and had brisket, turkey, ribs, jalapeño sausage, chicken - all were great We all had the jalapeño corn which was to die for. The cole slaw was great too. The potatoes salad was not one of my favorites though. Overall, the must do was a dead spot on. Look forward to going again when in Abilene

We were unable to eat the bar-b-que brisket because it was too tough. Hardly any smoke ring. We will not be going back.

It was a good stop. Loved the brisket and the ribs. Their cornbread was fantastic as well. The Jalapeno corn is a standout.

We ordered two 2 meat plates with sides. Order 1: rib and brisket with green beans and macaroni salad with jalapeño corn bread. Order 2: brisket and grilled chicken with pinto beans and potato salad. Unfortunately, the food was not to our likening. The green beans taste like they were from a can and macaroni salad didn't taste fresh, it tasted like refrigerator. Potato salad was whipped and pinto beans had an odd taste, couldn't make it out. Rob had too much black pepper and the other meats really didn't have a good smoke flavor. No comment on the BBQ sauce. With two drinks, we paid about $50.00 If you enjoy meats that don't have a Smokey flavor, this may be to your place. As we like to say, give it a try for yourselves since we all have different tastes buds.

Last time through, I ordered 2 lbs of chopped beef and told her a pint of bbq sauce. When i looked at my ticket, they charged for the pint of sauce and my normal free sauce wasn't included. Today, I ordered 4 lbs of meet at 1:33 and it took 20 minutes with a line of cars behind me. I had already waited in line for maybe 10 minutes. It was 11:33 and they open at 11:00 and they were already out of chicken. So, they ask if i want pickle and onions and I said yes. Finally got home and opened the bag and no pickle and onions. I opened the chopped beef and these globs of fat were laying right on top. Don't have high hopes for the rest of it. Their "pulled pork" is actually shredded, heavily sauced with something and has a real wanky taste. It will hit the trash.

I fully expected that one or two of the meats would be good and the rest just passable. I was wrong. Every single bite was spectacular. We also had the brisket and queso chips and pig candy - both were really tasty; the chips especially were very fresh and sprinkled with just a touch of bbq rub. We arrived a few minutes before they opened on a warm Saturday and the wait was about 75 minutes or so. Definitely worth standing in line for. There's ample outdoor (but covered) seating and plenty of good music playing, plus cornhole games if you're feeling competitive. Jays will be our go-to for BBQ the next time we're in Abilene! We arrived around 11:15 on a Friday and the line was already long so we decided we would order to go as we need to get to Lubbock before 3:00pm. We ordered the Texas Trinity to go. This place has charm and lots of stuff to look at while waiting in the long slow line. You can go up and order beer to drink in line but my thought is that the beer is over price. Some places have free beer or free water while you wait outside in the Texas heat, not here. So the food we got made it all the way back to eat in Houston on Sunday when we got back. The true test of good BBQ is how it taste when you reheat it, all the food was good but the brisket was a bit dry 8/10, the sausage was nice 9/10 and the pork rib was good 9/10. (chips were pretty good) The salmon was overcooked and the grilled broccoli practically raw. This meal was so underwhelming it reminded me of maybe something you might pick up in a grocery store in that section where people who don't cook go to get ready-made meals. It was right at that level. Service- Two or three stars. Mediocre. I've been here once before, btw, and that experience was probably an overall 3-star. This time was right before a show at the convention center next door. You'd think that maybe the restaurant would have been prepared for a crowd? Apparently not, since our food was slow to come (the table next to us had both of their steaks comp'ed due to slow service and not being cooked as asked). When I asked for a wine list, the server stated that he would "try to find one", and it took awhile. And the restaurant was probably only about 60% full. I mean, if I'm going to wait forever for my food, at least let me be drinking while I wait! The appetizer arrived with our food, btw. Love that... Ambiance: Five Stars. The restaurant looks nice. We took the onions and cucumbers off our salad due to dietary issues and that left us with lettuce, mushrooms, and dressing. Our burger was the best part. It was cooked well, and the bun was soft. The strawberry shortcake was disappointing. The fruit was stewed and the biscuits were hard with just room temp heavy cream to offset the temperature of the fruit. For ambiance, it was nothing to write home about. Very busy and very loud, but it was a Saturday evening so that was to be expected. What I didn't expect was the lack of air conditioning in July. It was over 100 degrees that day, and it was cooler outside. Unacceptable for Texas in July when you're seating tables 3' from each other. Our server was good. The interior is that frigid, lifeless faux fancy industrial aesthetic that chills your senses and has no character of its own. The menu is what you expect. Nothing special or original just benign takes on traditional fare, like Blackened Ribeyes. We were In Abilene because my family gathered to watch my nephew's football debut at Hardin-Simmons University. My wife ordered the Caesar Salad and Truffle fries. The salad was limp, and the dressing was tangy like it was mixed with Dijon mustard Her Truffle Fries had an okay flavor. The dipping sauces were good but nothing great but the nail in the coffin was the fries were cold. Not cold as in sitting in the warmer cold, we're talking OUT ON THE COUNTER FOR 10 MINUTES OR MORE COLD!! I got the Waygu Smash burger. The burger patties, pickles, and everything inside were good but it was served on a fancy bun that was also cold. Not sitting on the counter for 10 minutes cold, we're talking RIGHT OUT OF THE FRIDGE COLD. Fancy buns should be lightly toasted to make the dense bread bearable. It totally failed my bun to juiciness ratio, and to top it off my fries were also COLD. My daughter got the Ahi Tuna Ponzo. I didn't taste it because I was busy eating my cold bun, cold fries. Plus my wife's Dijon Caesar Salad because she despises mustard. But she seemed to like it, that's why this review is three stars instead of two. She said it was "Slightly nutty and the vinaigrette is sharp and fresh without being overwhelming the tuna is seasoned nicely and it's a fatty cut not fishy at all." Listen, you could say "if it's cold send it back. Make them fix it." But the truth is that it doesn't matter. They sent out two batches of cold truffle fries (my brother in law also ordered some), my cold fries, a fancy bun that was right out of the fridge, and Caesar dressing spiked with Dijon mustard. Sending it back just would have made the experience worse, like being in a chilly hell where all the heat has been stolen so all food is served COLD.
