A quick Yelp review led us to Sharon's and man am I glad we ate here! The food is self-serve cafeteria style, except for ordering the meat (you ask someone behind the counter for what you want). Keep an eye out for the cornbread warmers next to the soda dispenser as you enter the main dining area! Sharon's is Texas BBQ at its best. I have been eating at Sharon's since she and Joe Allen opened their first place on South Treadway. I cannot tell you how many feet of ribeye steaks I have eaten. Remember when you could order your steak by how thick you wanted it cut. I have often wished Cahoots would come back, they had the best catfish and shrimp. We are truck drivers and our customer said this place is REALLY REALLY GOOD...,, UHHHH NO! The ham was decent (hard to mess that up). The brisket had no flavor at all, if I could give a 0 star I would. The sides were disgusting the Mac and cheese was like chewing on a tire ended up spitting it out. Never thought green beans could taste bad however there was no flavor whatsoever. The coleslaw also no flavor. The cornbread very bland tried to drown it in honey and butter and it was still dry. Came into town for 2 days for a job Interview and check out places to live. After not eating all day, I came across this place on Yelp at 2:30pm. After perusing the pics on here, I decided to come and check it out. I am glad I did. This place is awesome and the folks working were super nice. I decided on the 5 meat place and it definitely did not disappoint! I got Chicken , Sausage , Ribs and 2 Briskets . After I got the plate with the meats, I asked how many sides s to choose. The guy replied, " as many sides as you can sqeeze on your plate". My inner fat kid was excited . I ended up with the Potato salad , beans and coleslaw . I swear my plate weighed about 5 pounds . Very disappointed the last several times I have visited this location. This particular visit I got a simple turkey sandwich, fried okra and a large sweet tea. It was $19. I understand that prices on everything have skyrocketed, but for the quality and quantity it is terrible. The turkey was extremely tough on the outside skin, full of fat on the inside clearly you can see in the pictures and cold. The bread you can tell has clearly been left out because it was hard on the bottom of the bun and on the top it was completely dried out. You can tell by the picture with with cracking everywhere the dryness in the turkey and bun.The fried okra is just your basic fried okra, but for five dollars you would think that you would get more than the small amount that you see in the picture. Sweet tea was good. When I questioned the sandwich I was told that is all they had to offer. This location really lacks in a good customer service. read more

Ventured out last night and ran across this gem. We originally went because they had live music and wanted a beer. Atmosphere was quaint and staff was very friendly. When we walked in the amazing barbecue smell let us know quickly that maybe we were hungry after all. Ha ha We ordered to go when we were leaving. If you like fatty brisket, this is the place for you. Hubby and I have been coming here for years when we're in Abilene but tonight was a disappointment. Both of our brisket plates were 1/3 fat! I was super excited to try Sharon's - I've heard such good things but this place doesn't live up to the hype. Maybe it's because I'm from Dallas and have access to a lot more variety of BBQ places. The prices were little high for a small town BBQ joint. The brisket was dry and so was the cornbread. Turkey was very good. I don't know if we came on a bad day but the service was unwelcoming and not very friendly at all. I will try it again on a different day. Sharon's should have the option to post on GrubHub that they are temporarily out of certain products. How is it that we ordered the large meat plate with chicken being 1 of our meats, but we are able to get chicken on our plates. Honestly this place is a bit pricey for what it is, don't get me wrong it's not bad but at the same time you would drop some $$$ for a simple brisket plate with sides. Best ribs and their sauce was amazing. They should bottle and sell it. My husbands sliced brisket sandwich (8 of 10). Side dishes don't rank. They need my coleslaw recipe and the potato something didn't rank at all. They should do a simple German potato salad or even a Costco potato salad. Went and got a brisket sandwich platter It consisted of 2lb of chopped brisket,2 tubs of potato salad,2 tubs of pinto beans,onion slices, pickel slices, a tub of BBQ sauce and a package of Mrs. Baird buns. My review of the BBQ was swimming in grease and choped to the consistency smaller than hamburger so it had no texture or bark left The beans were under cooked and hard,it also had no spices. I selected my night's hotel based on being next to a good BBQ place (couldn't find anything decent on the west side of Abilene). Not disappointed. Be forewarned, they have a unique system there. You order your meats, you get a plate, and you can pile it as high as you want with sides. The catch: only one pass. I feel like this too easily leads to wasting food - better to take too much for one price than to take too little. On the other hand, since I know how much I can eat, I pulled it off nearly perfectly and got a lot of food for my money, but that leads to the other problem - with only one plate, you either need to dump some sides directly on your tray (I have been brought up to believe all trays are dirty and gross, so I can't do that), or you need to layer your plate carefully and get a bunch of sides mixed together at the fringes where they touch. (Cornbread is separate, so you can grab as many of those as you want. Tea/soda are also around the side, so no one-pass limit. The BBQ sauce was confusingly with the sides. I have to think they'd let you get more sauce if you need it, but I wasn't willing to chance it.) The highs: Quality meat. The brisket is fork tender. The ribs pull right off the bone. Good smoke flavor to both. No question about the five stars. Spicy BBQ sauce is also really good, the right level of heat (and whole pepper seeds!). Homemade desserts - I bought a pint of blackberry cobbler and brought the rest home for breakfast tomorrow. The lows: Avoid the potato salad. Cole slaw is average, but the potato salad is like cold mashed potatoes. I like my potato salad chunky with potatoes and veggies. Also, the jalapeno cornbread was soggy from being in a steamer all night, wrapped in foil (?). Better to leave it unwrapped so the edges get a little crispy. The mehs: The beans were good but not superb. Same with the jalapeno corn that they tout. In fact none of the sides really "did it" for me the way the meat did. That's the main reason I dropped a star. The sides just don't measure up to the meat (and the dessert). I'm not sure what to think of the one-pass service system. To me the winner here are the sides. Each one was spectacular! The German sausage was pretty good, although it tasted like any other BBQ sausage. Maybe I was expecting a knockwurst.. The brisket was on point though. I left full only because I loaded up on sides which you only have 1 pass at btw, so make it count!!! It was good food but my plate coat 17 bucks. You'll be able to tell from my other reviews I don't really care about money, but I've gotten much more meat for much less elsewhere. Okay folks, we're averaging here. From a party of 3 one of us felt an overall rating of 3 stars was appropriate based only on his meal, the other two of us felt 1 star was possibly generous. I'll break it down for y'all. We'll hit the high notes first. 2 meat plate: brisket & jalapeno sausage. Ordered by the least picky of us. He said he thought everything was good, nothing was great. The jalapeno sausage has a bit of bite without being overwhelming. Sr. Plate: ribs. Ordered by one of the pickiest. (Title of actual pickiest is debatable, but we both know good when we get it!) Ribs were very dry & lacked flavor. So dry it was almost like jerky, but without the taste. Sandwich: Chopped brisket & jalapeno sausage. I asked them to chop the sausage in with the brisket. What I got was slices of sausage on top of chopped brisket. Not quite what I wanted, but it was still pretty good. I added their regular BBQ sauce, pickles, & onions. I'd eat this & only this again for a quick lunch. The sides: in a word, bad. Potato salad is okay, but that's where the positivity ends. Beans had no flavor at all. Cornbread was so dry it was regretfully inedible. I ordered mac & cheese as the side with my sandwich. Big mistake. Big. Huge. They said they'd bring it... ... ... finally it appeared. This was one of the hardest reviews for me, it should be a five star rating, instead a three due to BAD attitudes and service. I've been eating Sharon's BBQ since she opened the doors after splitting up with Joe. She has always prided her establishments with SERVICE and good quality food, especially here with her unique and exceeds the sides here and over at Lytle Land and Cattle (Steak House)! And for at least a decade of living here the service was as good as her food. So every time I'm in town I've got to at least eat one meal here. Well, I can't express how disappointed I was this time with her staff... The food was EXCELLENT as usual and has been since she opened the doors! The lady at the register taking orders and etc was absolutely the rudest person I've countered in a long time! First, as I walked in no one acted like inward even there, from her to the two guys cutting the meat and filling the plates, they were too occupied with some type of drama between the staff members. Finally, after standing there for over three minutes she looked at me while leaning on a mop and said "yes" I gave her my order she said "that'll be $15.13!" And liked away as if she couldn't wait for me to walk away! Never so much as to so thanks, hope you enjoy your meal etc... She was without a doubt upset about having to work and be nice to the customers! Then the staff I the back seemed all occupied with something other than work! So, if you want good Texas style (Big Country) BBQ, please don't get discouraged at the staff or at least this one person there, it's well worth it! This place has incredible creamed corn. And that's about it. I was driving through town and a friend from Abilene told me that I had to, HAD to, must, stop at Sharon's. Maybe living in Austin spoils me. It probably does. But there was nothing memorable about Sharon's, including the bread. Having fresh bread is a great idea, but it needs to be good, too. Everything was just alright, which means that the restaurant is not. Every BBQ joint needs to have something special. An amazing fatty cut of brisket. Or big ribs. Something. Something good! I just wrote a whole effing review that YELP LOST. So I'm going to have to write it again which will make it way shorter and me way more agitated--which in no way should reflect on the restaurant. Jalapeno creamed corn is good, green beans standard, whipped potato salad pretty good, jalapeno cornbread is good. Brisket is okay, burnt ends are too tough. You have to get those right. Burnt ends are the alter where you pray to the BBQ gods, gotta get that right, baby. Jalapeno smoked sausage is good. Sauces--all of them--are good and made there. Ok I don't get this one. I went there and could not even finish my meal. The corn bread was so dry I choked on it. The meat was stringy, flavorless, and greasy. The sauce was sour and too spicy. I left most of my food on the table. You couldn't pay me to go back. I was so looking forward to trying it and then was so dissapointed couldnt figure it out until I found out they also own lytle land and cattle company. Sharon's BBQ is a really cute place on the U.S. 80 in Abilene Texas. We we drove through Texas last year when we discovered this little gem. Hands down, it has been the best BBQ we've had yet. On our way to Arizona for a delivery we routed our trip so we could go through Abilene Texas for more of that scrumptious food. The service is is pleasant with servers ready and waiting to feed you. We shared a combination plate of ribs and brisket. With all of the sides included, there is more than enough food for two of us including various choices of cornbread. Here's the lowdown on the food: The Good-absolutely everything! The ribs were moist, juicy and tender falling off the bones. The brisket, my favorite, was mouthwatering with flavor. Juicy, tender and moist just like the ribs. The self serve BBQ sauce is an excellent option with a choice of regular, sweet and spicy choices. The coleslaw was fabulous and fresh, the green beans were amazing! Creamed corn was one of the best I've had. We passed on the pinto beans because our plate was full but last time we had them and they were awesome. The Bad- it's not close enough to home for me to frequent on a regular basis. Good thing though because they would bankrupt me-I'd eat there daily! yum. Wanting some chicken to go, but not the fried variety, Sharon's came to mind. First time here but I've heard its really good. I called in a order for pick up and the lady recommended the corn thing which I've heard so much about. Instead of just chicken i ended up getting potato salad, the jalapeno corn and a loaf of bread. All of it was GREAT. I like that its a local joint and the food tastes like someone actually took the time to make it, instead of it being manufactured in a factory. My only complaint though is the BBQ sauce. It reminded me of Kraft. No thanks. read more
