After a long day of Insurance Billing, and getting a 15 min lecture by my dogs groomer on how I'll behaved my 7 month old schnauzer is (flash back to teacher parent conference ), I had to make one more call to verify benefits for a patient. I called the Sharp Health plan customer service number. Typically, when I call an insurance company, the voice I hear on the other end is somewhere between boredom and contempt. Today was different. I was greeted with a sunny voice full of joy. Mariann O was eager to help me and got right to the heart of the issue. The Website showed our patients insurance had been terminated. Mariann located the new plan and gave me all the details and even pointed out some I didn't know I needed. Sure anyone could have given me that info but her kind voice and silver plate, white glove treatment left me with a smile on my face and a lite heart. While the health care and medical staff are excellent the billing department and customer service is a mess. I woke up to a large deposit in my bank account. After review Sharp has refunded me a large amount of money. I call in to find out my insurance was terminated for no payment. What the heck! No way to explain the billing mess that's has not been resolved in 2 days and 3 customer service reps later. This is not the 1st billing issue I have had. I will be looking for another provider during open enrollment. Frustrated!! read more

I am so glad that I am able to access help from the staff at Sharp via my ID Card. Their Customer Care service has always given me helpful service when I have a problem. Yesterday I was rescued by "Mariann" when I was locked out. This was the second attempt that day for me to get free. She worked with me for at least 45 minutes. After the 2 of us tried several ways to attack the problem, in the end, we were able to have a successful resolution. Hurray for Mariann. read more

I would call Sharp Medicare Advantage a good 4 star plan. Unfortunately, this plan in most cases does not support in home provider visits, in home PT visits, in home lab draws or most things in home. My parents are both in their 100s and its quite a fall risk to get them into the car and then out of the car to get to a Medical/PT/Lab Office. Granted there might be few people in this situation. My parents are weak but not ill so one of them doesn't qualify for Home Health Care (which is required by Medicare to be intermittent only) so they expect my centenarian Mom to hop in the car and go to the lab. Doesnt work that way when you are over 100. So these are out of pocket expenses that remain unrecognized by Sharp Medicare Advantage and non PPO Medicare plans and some services they need that we wont be able to take advantage of. Otherwise, Sharp Medicare Advantage has been quite responsive. read more

The telephone customer service rep, Lorenza, was amazing. She helped me in an incredibly frustrating situation where the ambulance company AMR billed me for full ride in Feb. I called in July and furnished my insurance info. Then got full bill again. I reached them now in Augist anxious i would be sent to collections for the $2,000 bill. They said I was declined for uninsured. So I called and got Lorenza. What a help! She outlined i was covered. And based on my plan informed me Yes my ride should be copay of $250. She offered to call the ambo company for me! I stayed on line. She explained what happened - the address on my insurance card was for general stuff and there is a specialized address (not on card) for ambulance claims. The ONLY reason i give a four star is because Lorenzas employer set up a time and effort wasting situation where a star like her needs to fix it. I asked what could i have done right the first time. She said just to have called Sharp before the ambo company. Apparently it is a common SNAFU but ambulance claims go to different address than is on back of insurance card so they are automatically declined. I asked why doesn't the person opening sharp mail for the po box forward ambulance claims to the ambulance claim unit. She said because it has the wrong address on it. So sharp needs a systems thinker to Fix Our Cards. Fit It On or train your mail opener a wee bit better. But Lorenza- go girl!!!! read more

We were sent a letter from SHP dated January 6th that our Covered California Sharp Health plan was cancelled/terminated January 1st. We called CS and spoke at length to a SHP representative and were informed that yes indeed our coverage was cancelled by CC. As I am self employed, and we have a 5 year old girl with medical issues, we had no choice but to open a new off exchange policy w SHP. Our Covered California policy automatically renewed January 1st, and SHP has been receiving the payments from CC!!! Repeated calls to SHP over the last 5 months have still not resolved the issue. Misinformation, ineffectual employees, conflicting plans of action, no call backs,etc. Sharp Health Plan CEO, Melissa Hayden-Cook, has created a ZERO accountability system for SHP customer service. I cannot tell you how many times we have been told we would get a call back/problem will be resolved by friday etc. What I really find telling is that even the administrators at Sharp Rees Stealy cannot get correct coverage information from SHP. I find it ironic that a company supposedly providing health care can be so unresponsive; SHP deals with peoples lives and wellbeing and collects millions of taxpayers dollars from Covered California. Absolutely criminal.. Racheal, you can save your pretend response; I know, and you know, it is lip service and not any effort for real resolution of the inherent problems with SHP. read more

Customer Service is amazing. I recently received a bill from CVS Minute Clinic which surprised me, my daughter's flu test should have been covered. I called Sharp Health Plan and they were so friendly and helpful, they called CVS right away, with me on the line, and went through the whole thing with them. Sure enough, CVS had charged the wrong medical group and I shouldn't have received that bill. All fees were waived right then (I'm sure I'll get a new bill with the copay amount), what a relief! My family has been on the Sharp Health Plan for 5 years. The last month we were on the plan while traveling out of the country, we had an unexpected health crisis which required a trip to the Emergency Department. This was an "out of network" visit, but was a bonafide emergency, and thus covered by the plan. We had to pay for the emergency service in cash, as the ED in the foreign country did not want to deal with American Health Insurance. We submitted our claim to Sharp Health plan on September 1. Sharp advises that it can take UP TO 60 days to process and pay out of network claims, which in itself is ridiculous given that consumers are not afforded such time periods to make payment to Sharp. Today is November 14, and still no reimbursement from Sharp Health Plan. We've called multiple times and we've been told: "The claim is under review; the claim is being processed; The payment authorization has been sent to Finance; The check has been cut; The Check is in the mail"... Still, no reimbursement has been received from Sharp - The proverbial, "The check is in the mail". What is infuriating about Sharp's dragging of feet, is if I delayed in making payment to Sharp, I'm willing to bet they would have sent my bill to collections by now. This is tacky on Sharp's part, especially for being the 'local health plan'. We changed health plans from Sharp due to a job change, but given this experience, I would not choose Sharp Health Plan again for my family. read more

The Sharp Health Plan team helped me when I was having issues with Covered California trying to cancel my health plan due to an error in their system. Mary Ann O. was the first person I spoke to, and she did a great job listening to my concern. She quickly identified the correct people to contact and reached out to a team lead named Christopher W. She also got her supervisor Janet D. involved to resolve the cancelation issue. They placed me on a short hold and as a team were able to avoid the loss of coverage that would have happened due to the Covered California error. Atrocious customer service. I contacted the billing department on a conference call with a Covered California (CC) representative to address a billing issue with my Sharp Health Plan (SHP). Not only did the SHP representative ask me, repeatedly, the same identity verification questions (terrible listener), she left us both (CC representative and I) on hold for over an hour...and never returned to the call! Covered California: 1-800-300-1506 Reference # 190129 - 05889 (CC documented the incident) Then, when I called SHP back and requested to speak to a supervisor, first, I got hung up on. I called back again, then, instead of being transferred to a supervisor, the representative, near refuses me access to a supervisor. After what seemed like a verbal sparring match, the representative told me a supervisor would call me back. I then asked the representative when I could expect a call...he said he didn't know! So, I asked was it a day? a week? a month?! six months?!! a year?!!!...he says he "told me in 24 hours"...I said, "no you didn't"! 24 hours came and went (no call), so I called in today, 1/30/2019. I told the representative, Raymond, that I had expecting a call from a supervisor in billing, which I never received. Apparently, no supervisor call was scheduled, my call was not documented. He tries (he says) to transfer me to billing, nothing happens. Thirty minutes into the call he says he has to get me the number for billing because his computer won't let him transfer me...more holding...then, he says he can't give me the number because it's an internal number (really??!!!) and that Daniel, from billing, would return my call shortly, after which, Daniel from billing never calls!!! SHP has great health care services, mind you (doctors, nurses, technicians, labs, etc.), but it customer service (billing) is worst than a bad dream. read more

Sharp Health Plan really has terrible administration. You may save on premiums compared to other insurers, but you end up paying with frustration in the claims process. For 2018, my family used up most of its $13K maximum out-of-pocket. Sharp Health Plan apparently does not keep track of your total out-of-pocket on an ongoing basis. So when 2019 came and we were still getting $1,000-plus in bills from providers for 2018, we had to ask Sharp Health Plan for a maximum out-of-pocket audit. They did not do this automatically. After the audit was done, Sharp Health Plan told us the medical provider (Sharp Rees Stealy, part of the same Sharp family) would have to resubmit the bills because of the maximum out-of-pocket audit. We went through the same routine for months: We wait. Then we receive collection letters from the medical provider. We call the medical provider and tell them they have to resubmit the bills to their sister company Sharp Health Plan. They tell us they never got the maximum out-of-pocket audit. We then call Sharp Health Plan. They tell us the medical provider needs to resubmit the bills. Yesterday, I actually got both of them on the phone at the same time. I was literally screaming because of the frustration. Sharp Health Plan promised to elevate the issue and call me by the end of the day. As you might expect, no one ever called. I'm sure I will get another collection letter from the medical provider, and the whole process will start over again. Do yourself a favor and pay a little more upfront and get an insurer with a reliable claims department. Update: As usual, someone from Sharp Health Plan who monitors Yelp reviews says they want to fix the problem and asks me to reach out to them. I did. They promised have someone contact me right away to fix the issue. Nobody ever calls. read more

She took her time, was professional and when we received the first answer that we did not want.....she tried again until we were able to come to a great resolution.
