After another disappointing haircut near my office, my wife encouraged me to seek out a barbershop near where we live on the Upper East Side. My hair grows outward in a somewhat-proverbial "Jewish poof," rather quickly, as well, and last but not least, I have a not-so-insignificant scar on my scalp above my right ear that gives me a bald spot with short hair; to say the least, it's a difficult haircut to get right. After researching lots of places in the neighborhood, I finally found the Mens Lounge, and decided to try here, especially because this was one of the only places around where the positive reviews weren't just fades or buzz-cuts, but also scissor cuts. I went around 3pm on a Saturday afternoon, no wait, and David saw me immediately. I talk through the issues with my previous haircuts, explained exactly what I wanted, and 20 minutes later, he delivered a perfect haircut. I couldn't have been more happy, and just as importantly, my wife also thought it was a great haircut. The $25 was worth every penny, and I will be back there every 2 weeks for a haircut. Probably will also get my shoes shined next time, too!

I booked a regular cut and the stylist pressured me into a curly cut ($85 vs $135) despite me saying that I didn't think that would work well for my hair as my hair texture is waves/loose curls. I wouldn't have minded paying more if it was a good cut but the cut is nothing like what I requested and is an uneven mess. My hair is way shorter than I wanted and is so stressful to style. When my initial reaction to the cut was that it was very short, the stylist got upset and said I asked for a short cut (if you look at the inspiration photo you can see how much shorter mine turned out). I pointed out the uneveness and she said it was because of my hair being tighter curls on one side, which I told her wasn't the case. She also told me that I don't need products with hold after I shared that I'm struggling with finding products that give me enough hold, and said how she styled my hair was proof- as is obvious in the picture my hair was completely flat and a mess. I'm not a confrontational person so at that point I just wanted to get out of the salon. The stylist had positive reviews so my only guess is that she wasn't experienced with my hair type. I have since tried styling multiple ways including blowing out my hair and it is obvious how uneven it is; it's so embarrassing that I had to trim some of the most noticeable pieces myself. I work in a school and have had kids saying all day long "why did you cut off all your hair!" and I have to smile and pretend I chose this. I'm pretty easy going about my hair, but this has been so upsetting and stressful.

It was about a 17-minute walk from where I was currently at, so I called to check availability before walking over. Dominique answered the phone and told me she was happy to take me in as soon as I arrived. I communicated what I wanted: to cut off at least 15 inches of hair for me to donate then just have her add layers so that my face would be framed nicely. I explained that I have naturally curly/wavy hair and that I don't want my hair shorter than my shoulders when curly. She listened intently and very clearly understood the assignment. I let her know that I didn't really have an "inspiration photo" for what I wanted my hair to look like, but she told me not to worry and I trusted her. Throughout the entire process, she communicated EVERYTHING to me! She knew I was nervous about having short hair again, so I truly appreciated her transparency with what she planned to do while cutting as it made me feel at ease. The outcome is PHENOMENAL! I LOVE my new haircut (and so does my husband)!!! When I left the salon, she had straightened it out and it looked beautiful. The next day I wore it natural and it looked just as amazing! There were two stylists for 3 people that were getting their hair colored, so I knew there was no way that my appointment to get a haircut would be taking place in an organized way. I had to leave because I was getting such a headache from the fumes, and the frustration of this appointment time, and the disorganization of the stylists. Do not go here if you value your time!
