I got my haircut by Kenya Renee at this salon on New Years Eve. I have never written a negative review about a haircut however I am so upset about how it turned out. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I booked a regular cut and the stylist pressured me into a curly cut ($85 vs $135) despite me saying that I didn't think that would work well for my hair as my hair texture is waves/loose curls.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I wouldn't have minded paying more if it was a good cut but the cut is nothing like what I requested and is an uneven mess. My hair is way shorter than I wanted and is so stressful to style. [[HIGHLIGHT]]When my initial reaction to the cut was that it was very short, the stylist got upset and said I asked for a short cut (if you look at the inspiration photo you can see how much shorter mine turned out).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I pointed out the uneveness and she said it was because of my hair being tighter curls on one side, which I told her wasn't the case. She also told me that I don't need products with hold after I shared that I'm struggling with finding products that give me enough hold, and said how she styled my hair was proof- as is obvious in the picture my hair was completely flat and a mess. I'm not a confrontational person so at that point I just wanted to get out of the salon. The stylist had positive reviews so my only guess is that she wasn't experienced with my hair type. I have since tried styling multiple ways including blowing out my hair and it is obvious how uneven it is; it's so embarrassing that I had to trim some of the most noticeable pieces myself. I work in a school and have had kids saying all day long "why did you cut off all your hair!" and I have to smile and pretend I chose this. Not one to write reviews although this experience still bothers me months after the fact. Back in June 2025, I booked an appointment on the salon's website for an afternoon haircut priced at $85. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I arrived on time and was greeted by a woman who, I later learned, was the owner of the salon, Melyssa. Her greeting was simply: "Haircut?"[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I said yes, and she led me to the sink for a wash. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Once in the chair, she began talking about how excited she was to leave for her family vacation after my appointment.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I understand people have lives outside of work, but from the moment I walked in to the moment I walked out, the entire haircut took fifteen minutes--no exaggeration, wash and dry and all. I have very fine, fragile hair and explained to her that I've always struggled to find cuts that work best for my hair type. I told her I was open to her professional recommendation. She suggested layers, and I agreed, trusting her expertise. Instead, she gave me one heavy layer and removed a lot of volume, leaving me with a chunky, unflattering cut--the opposite of what works for thin hair (I wish I took a photo but that hair went up into a clip as soon as I left and feel like it hasn't come down yet). Still, I told myself, "Well, it was only $85, and that's cheap for the Upper East Side." But when I went to check out, I was charged $185. I hesitated, thinking maybe I'd made a mistake when booking, but I was in a rush and decided I'd check my records later. Sure enough, I confirmed I had in fact booked with a cut with a rate of $85. [[HIGHLIGHT]]When I called the salon to discuss the overcharge, I was met with hostility and a cold, dismissive attitude.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I was told things like "Well, that's just her rate," as though that excused charging me more than double without informing me beforehand. The truth is, the owner took my appointment when I booked with a lower level stylist without explaining the price difference--and that's on the salon, not the customer. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Over the next few weeks, I called repeatedly, only to be brushed off with "We're looking into it"--over and over. Nothing was resolved.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I finally gave up and filed a report with the BBB, but the salon has yet to respond to their communications. In the end, I paid $185 for a rushed, unflattering haircut and some of the worst customer service I've experienced. Still having not heard back from the owner, for as much as an apology I recommend you bring your business to a salon with more integrity. If you want a no-drama, detail-oriented haircut with price transparency, I recommend York Salon instead. No frills, fair pricing (my first cut there was $100), and a stylist who actually takes their time and cares about the end result. I wish I didn't have to write this review but after 4 sessions, I'm left with some of the worst "blonde" ( if you can even call it that) color of my life. I've never felt more dull and ugly and have about 4 different shades on my head. I will acknowledge that the front desk team was SO kind and tried to be helpful and was understanding of what needed to be fixed. The stylist who tried to fix my mess of a color really tried , was kind, and I could tell really wanted it to be better but didn't have the blonde knowledge or skill set to execute this. She even said " I don't do blondes often but I want to more ". Why are you fixing my blonde then??? My fix was face framing highlights to "blend it all together"-youll see in pictures where these were placed. And she didn't know how to fix the over bleached scalp I got when asking for a money piece. Another stylist came and explained what to do - now it's just a weird light brown ( starting to turn green ish) but I guess better than the bleach bald look I had before. Overall I asked for a partial highlights, with a money piece and warm toner. And I'm left with light brown hair with the weirdest shade in the front and a "face framing " by my ears beneath my hair. This nice of a place should've done better. This wasn't a hard ask. They did try and were very nice but I look so awful :( read more

This was my first visit to the salon. I scheduled a haircut with Ranne based on what I saw on his Instagram profile. I was looking for a cut with layers and movement and this was perfect! I came a few minutes early to my appointment and they were ready for me. Ranne's technique is a bit unorthodox but it creates great layers. I am absolutely in love with my haircut and how it lays. This is my first time going here and with the reviews I wasn't nervous at all. Tina is a new stylist but she used to own a salon so I figured I was in good hands. I got home from my cut and blowout and realized when I ran my fingers through the back of my hair that there was a whole section that was wet. And as I sectioned off my hair to just do it myself, there were lots of sections not blown out. My hair is textured so there were whole pieces that were still super wavy. They were just covered by the top layers so it would look nice when I left. I also had to remind her several times that I wanted my shortest layers to be chin length. They still aren't but after asking several times I just figured I'd move on. I'm really disappointed. The other stylists have great reviews but I don't think I'll be back. read more

I had an amazing experience at Thomas Taft Salon with Uros! A few years ago I got very sick with an illness and ended up losing a lot of my hair. It was devastating as I had to wear wigs for years - and my hair was something I used to be very proud of. Once my hair finally started growing back the layers and lengths were all over the place, but I was afraid to let anyone cut it or do anything to it. I finally decided to get a cut and put my trust in Uros. Uros was so kind and he made me very comfortable with the whole process. The layers are absolutely perfect and I am so happy. I'm in love with my hair now, I've always struggled throughout my hair journey yet after my much needed haircut I'm finally more willing to embrace and love my hair, and it was done by Francesca. This was my first time there, and I'm so glad I chose Thomas Taft. I came in on Monday (9/18/2023). During the consultation, I talked about my issues, goals, and what I wanted in my haircut. I have long 2a/2b waves and wanted fullness, encourage definition for my natural texture, and for the poorly done layers and my bangs (done by a different hair stylist) to be fixed. While keeping a long length. Before the hair cut, it was an uneven mess. The left and right sides of the "face framing" layers were clearly uneven and made it difficult to do even subtle hairstyles. My bangs were hard to manage as random, long pieces kept bothering my face, it wouldn't lay/dry as I wanted it to, and it was honestly driving me crazy. Francesca has fixed the overall shape and kept my hair long, and it's still full while also encouraging my waves to form. I've always struggled with definition, and while using the same products as usual and incorporating some advice and techniques from Francesca, I've noticed my hair cooperating with the products more, plus my waves don't fall flat as it used to. My bangs no longer have random pieces interrupting my daily life, which my eyes and selfies are thankful for. There is still some work needed to be done, as I really wanted my hair to stay long and didn't want to sacrifice most of my length. To be honest, I didn't really care for layers since the previous stylist ruined my hair because of it. Yet Francesca's work made me appreciate how it can benefit my hair. Great experience overall! My roots were growing out brown from my blonde highlights - I didn't want to go super blonde ontop again, so Shlomi suggested a toner rather than just partial highlights. LOVED the result - it wasn't as harsh as getting highlights and is now growing out much nicer. Much better blend than what I had previously. He also gave me some curtain bangs, which I ended up loving. It was a totally new look for me - I love it! read more

The haircut I received was pretty good, so 2/5 stars seems fair, but I was not impressed with the salon's operations. For starters, I was asked to shift my appointment back 30 minutes to accommodate staff schedules - which was totally fine; however, when I arrived at the newly agreed upon appointment time, I had to wait an additional 30 minutes! What a waste of my time. Plus there is barely any room to wait comfortably. Also, if you feel like being upsold services and products, make an appointment here. Every salon thinks it's products are the best, so I'm not easily sold on these sorts of things, but it felt somewhat frustrating to decline the additional things. I'm going to find another salon, especially when it comes time for highlights, I won't be compromising on salon quality. read more

I called the salon upset after a failed haircut that morning. I had asked for long layers and face framing pieces, and as you can see from the before pictures (ignore the smile), I received a blunt cut (that was also uneven) and harsh face pieces. Thomas Taft Salon took care of me and fit me in just an hour later. Francessca was so kind to me the entire time. She listened to my request for layers with little to no length taken off, and did just that. She knew I was anxious from the prior haircut and walked me through what she was doing with lots of check-ins throughout. I have very thick wavy hair and she took the time to shape it and blow out the ends again. I love my hair even more when it's natural. I wanted to have a few appointments under my belt before reviewing this salon and now I feel confident in giving my opinion. This salon is definitely tops! I called up late one Sunday night and booked my first appointment for a cut and color with Melyssa (I believe she owns the salon). I was pleasantly surprised that they were able to fit me in that night. The salon is lovely, the receptionists are very nice and quick to offer you a glass wine, a very nice touch. They also have a very sweet French bulldog named Gus wandering through the store, giving all the patrons some love. Melyssa did a great job with my fine, thin hair. The cut was tops and the color was perfect. After several weeks it didn't fade at all. I decided to schedule a color consultation (I wanted something different from my normal single process), and booked an appointment. Melyssa recommended highlights and was ready to go then and there. The highlights came out really nice but the undertone was a bit too warm for my liking (I have neutral undertones and can pull off a warm brown but I prefer cool, ashy browns). I called the salon and asked if the color can be made a bit cooler. They were wonderful about the correction and scheduled me for an appointment. Melyssa was wonderful and made my highlights the perfect tone. Everyone was very gracious and I was not made to feel like I was bothering them or being difficult. This is one of the best highlight jobs I have ever gotten. Maybe next time I will go blonder. This salon has late hours which works great with my schedule. I went to this salon twice, first to the upper west side location in September and then to see the same stylist at the upper east side location about 3 months later. I had a great experience the first time. My stylist worked well with my curly hair and gave me bangs that I really love. However, in my second appointment when I went just to maintain that haircut and get a trim, she cut probably another 6 in off my hair, dramatically changing my appearance. It was mostly my fault because I did not show her a picture of what it had looked like the previous time she cut it (because she said she remembered, and because we both referenced my earlier appointment in September). But I've been really shocked with the results and even a month later I'm pretty horrified. My hair is now too short to wear in a ponytail and I've had to completely change my hair care routine and products. So please show your stylist a photo of what you want before you let them start trimming, even if you've worked with them before and you think they know what you want. I had a great experience at Thomas Taft with Sherleen who does almost any treatment and both synthetic and natural hair. She was extremely precise and methodical in putting in ten hair braids. It took about 1,5 hr and I paid $155. Sherleen is very personable. The salon itself is very modern and clean. My appointment started exactly on time. read more

I had a traumatizing experience at this salon. I actually cried seeing what they did to my hair, and I've never done that at a salon before. [[HIGHLIGHT]]First of all, I was very clear on what I wanted. I wanted to go from a balayage back to my natural brown hair. Ranne, who did my hair, seemed to understand what I was asking for. He saw what my natural hair looked like and seemed to think it was possible.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] After he washed my hair and he started blow drying my hair, my hair looked black. I told Ranne that I thought it was too dark and was basically black, and he told me I was wrong and that it wasn't black (it definitely was) and that it matched my natural hair color. As someone who has lived with their hair for 30 years now, I think I know what my natural hair looks like. [[HIGHLIGHT]]He then started getting very upset and angry with me and told me I was wrong, at which point I decided to back off and go home because he did not want to hear it.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I also gave him a generous tip, despite being very unhappy with my hair and basically getting yelled at by Ranne.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I called and made an appointment the next day. I showed up and the receptionist told me I had to sit far away from Ranne who was clearly mad at me, which already made me feel uncomfortable and I was already very anxious about being able to even fix my hair.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The new stylist agreed with me that it was black and confirmed that I was not crazy, but told me that unfortunately they can't make it the same color as my natural hair color because it's now too dark. During my hair wash, the new stylist, who could tell I was already upset, then proceeded to tell me that my hair was too dry and basically looked terrible, which made me feel even worse. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I just couldn't hold it in anymore and burst into tears. No one seemed to care at all. They were all laughing and smoking cigarettes outside. Ranne was giving me angry looks the entire time.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The new stylist gave me a recommendation for a shampoo/conditioner, which I bought but was shocked they didn't offer it to me for free after what i went through. I decided day-of that I wanted to chop my hair and within an hour of this decision I had an appointment and with no guiding pictures or ideas of what I wanted I got 10+ inches chopped off by Uro$ and came out with a beautiful short hair cut styled to perfection. Ask for Katrina, she is amazing!!! She works at both locations and recently cut my hair into the most amazing bob!!! Bobs are all the rage right now but I really appreciated how she customized the cut to suit my face and texture of my hair. I've been growing out a shag for the past year, and if you've ever had one you know they can be a nightmare to grow out! Katrina was able to cut all the straggly pieces off and make my hair look chic again! I also loved that she blew it out straight to make sure the lines were precise. I have been going to Thomas Taft salon since early 2016 and I have loved my experience at this salon for the last 4 years. Jean has been my stylist the entire time, and I cannot recommend her enough. She always seems to just know exactly what I want, and over time has figured out how to perfectly decipher what I am looking for. Jean is so thoughtful to make sure that the cut and style she prepares for her clients fits with their lifestyle, and needs. Most recently, I just asked Jean to do whatever she wanted to my hair, and it was one do the best cuts she's ever done. I trust her completely!! In addition, the salon itself is wonderful. The staff are all very kind and helpful, and I love supporting a business that believes in social justice. They have done a fantastic job to ensure safety during the COVID-19 pandemic (I am a public health professional and felt totally safe with their practices).
