Great first experience at this salon. I was looking to try a new salon for both haircut and color last Friday and I was enticed by the reviews here and called them if I could be accommodated the same day, should they have the availability. Lucky they were able to immediately squeeze me in at 2PM for a haircut with Miki and a haircut consultation with Virginia with the actual color to be scheduled. Turned out to be even better. Miki's haircut was really nice + she's also just wonderful. I ended up being convinced to cut off 3 inches to make my hair lighter as well. As for the color consultation, Virginia was great and actually ended up accommodating me right away because she finished her other job earlier. So from 3:30-7PM, she diligently worked to deliver the beautiful ash highlights that I wanted! So precise and has attention to detail, love her! The salon also enforces strict health and safety protocols on temp checks, asking you to wash your hands first, cleaning the chair for you as the next person to sit, and the owner also has a check in the next day to ask how your overall experience was. I paid $330+close to a $100 for tips but could have been more expensive if I wasn't extended a 20% off as first time customer. Yep they're not cheap but you get what you pay for. I get a single process coloring from Yoshi and it is amazing. I'm Asian and my natural hair is a very dark brown, and I like when it's a very specific medium to dark brown and when every strand of my hair is the same color, rather than highlights. I also wanted to stop bleaching my hair. Yoshi delivers the perfect medium to dark brown, no bleach necessary, and my hair is even the same color at the roots and the ends when he does it. No one else in the city has been able to accomplish this for me in the past 7 years I've lived here. Prices are also so reasonable. read more

Owner Taka is very hostile and disrespectful towards women! When I went to see him to fix my hair that was butchered by Miki, he completely dismissed me and blamed me for the poor haircut saying that I didn't know what I wanted. When I asked him if he thought my haircut by Miki was straight, he said "it depends" and refused to take any responsibility. At one point when I wanted to leave, he pointed at the chair and shouted at me "Sit!" as if I was a pet or a slave. I was completely shocked and felt very disrespected and violated. AVOID this salon! Once you pay for the service, the owner doesn't have any respect for his customers especially if you are a woman. read more

I have never been disappointed with a haircut here but Jun recently gave me an amazing haircut before I had my hair dyed for the first time ever (yes, ever!) I was so nervous about coloring my virgin hair, but Maki was very sweet during our consultation. She did a single process coloring on my hair and I was so happy with the results. It was even better than what I was expecting. A totally new cut and color was very adventurous for me but Jun and Maki did such an amazing job that I could cry. And my hair has never felt more soft and healthy! *Some safety notes: The compliance with safety guidelines was also very high. The waiting area was outdoors to limit the number of people in the salon and I had my temperature taken before entering the store. I was guided to the restroom to wash my hands immediately upon entering, masks were worn by every single person, and plexiglass was installed between hair washing stations. STAY AWAY!! These 5 star reviews are clearly fake or purchased because my experience was so far from 5 stars! This is a horrible salon. They do not listen to nor care about the client. They will DESTROY your hair and not apologize. They will hang up on you when you call to ask for a refund because they CUT OFF ALL OF YOUR HAIR even though you asked for a couple inches off- not 10! They will ignore you and eventually stop answering the phone. The disgusting behavior from this salon will be reported to BBB and to NY State Cosmetology Board. Such a great salon! This was my first time getting my hair cut at Tokuyama and, after reading such great reviews about her, I decided to go with Miki. She was extremely kind, thoughtful, gave me feedback on my ideas and frequently checked in with me to make sure I was comfortable with the length and style of the cut. I also love the way she styled my hair after cutting it! She really took her time with it as well, which I really appreciate. In terms of health/safety, they do a very thorough job here: temperature checks at the door, I had to immediately wash my hands, surfaces were frequently sanitized before/after use (which I observed throughout my time in the salon), masks were worn at all times and social distancing was enforced. The salon itself is very cute--love the decor--and very clean. There's a 20% discount for new customers, and even without the discount, the prices are reasonable, especially for the area. I went in today to get my hair fixed since Miki has not come back. I was coming from a different salon where I was just trying to get a quick trim to try and tide myself over until Miki returned and the guy did a bad job and stripped my hair. I ran to Tokuyama right afterwords and explained the problem I was having to the only woman who was there to see if she could help me fix it. She just laughed at me the whole time and told me she had no openings. She then called me crazy as I was walking out. I have been getting my hair dyed at Tokuyama UES for the past three years and have always had amazing experiences. I only realized how much it meant to me when it was closed for Covid, so I'm so glad the salon is open again! The salon is taking a lot of precautionary measures to make sure everyone stays safe; everyone wears masks, clients are required to wash hands and get their temperature checked, etc. I got my hair dyed yesterday and never felt unsafe while inside the salon. I also highly recommend Virginia for hair dye. Besides being a great colorist, she also cares a lot about hair health and is just a great person in general. While out and about in NYC, multiple people have actually stopped me to ask about my hair, and I always point them to Tokuyama and Virginia in particular. I'm absolutely LIVID with the TERRIBLE haircut that I got 4 days ago at Tokuyama. In preparation for a family photoshoot, I went to the salon for a trim. The hairdresser and I agreed that it would be "just a trim to keep it under the chin." I trusted him and closed my eyes for 5 minutes. And I opened my eyes to see my hair being way too short and way above my chin!!! I said, "that's too short!" to which the hairdresser responded, "should I proceed?" What other choice do I have at this point?! I ended up with super short hair that I did not and do no like one bit!!!!! The hairdresser may think it's a good haircut, but it's NOT my style and NOT what I asked for. He did NOT respect my word and my wish. Very UNPROFESSIONAL. What's worse, when I called the store to complain, the receptionist was rude and did not express any apologies. All she said repeatedly was, "The owner does not want to give you a refund." and "You talked to the hairdresser, right?" Such an AWFUL place. He took my thoroughly vague ramblings about wanting my flat hair to be, well, not flat and gave me a cut with gorgeous shape and, for want of a better word, energy. My hair swings and bounces, instead laying on my shoulders like a sulky, bored teenager. Jun was great about describing exactly what he envisioned, so there were no surprises along the way.
