It's a really nice place to be. I swear we walked in and I was wowed by the sheer size and grandeur. Mediterranean pastries and then there's the European types as well. I go in and out of Europe a lot and I'm a bit of a snoot when it comes to pastries. Heck, I'm even that way when it comes to baguettes, but we're not talking about bread here, specially with the spot right here. So,, let's get to it... the pastries. Napoleon: This is always my test pastry for all bakeries. It's sort of a play on every senses that is located in your mouth. Although the custardy sensation seems to be missing. The flakiness texture was non existent. The chewy sensation wasn't there either. It was definitely heavy on the icing which made it too sweet. I definitely did not enjoy my slice. Baklava: It's alright, nothing to really brag about. I've had better. Anyways, the place is super stunning. Awesome windows and really nice. I see a lot of people gathering here, specially families and such. Pastries were ok, plus the spot slinging coffee was a bit rude. Guy behind the counter was like, "Yea, what do you want?" I was looking for a birthday cake for my daughter and was told about this place. When I entered I thought I was in Dubai. The smells was delicious and satisfying. The dessert were something you could only see ftom aa magazine. The lamb pies and fruit smoothie lets say OH MY GOODNESS!! The lady I had was patient and friendly as I told her my daughter was turning 15 years old and what my daughter tastes were. Do together we discovered this beautiful cake. It was filled with strawberry and vanilla mousse. Strawberries and pineapples layered on top. This cake was so moist and sweet and amazing. I've been meaning to visit this bakery for a while; a birthday was the perfect reason to go. As the holidays approached, the bakery was busy with shoppers preparing for the festivities. They walked out with pastry boxes brimming with honey-drenched, flaky pastries. The bakery houses large cases filled with Middle Eastern and French pastries. There were shelves filled with different types of baklava, several varieties of khafeh, both cream and cheese, and kashta/atayef (cream-filled pancakes called bird nests). I had only wanted a few items but a regular made several delicious recommendations - how could I resist? I even had a honey-soaked, snail-shaped, churro-like pastry that I am still craving. I also selected a mille feuille and a rolled cake covered in sliced almonds. These were less good; a bit dry actually. I also liked that the bakery has a large number of tables to enjoy the sweet treats. I've never been to the actual bakery but my mom's workplace caters from them all the time and she brought back a half mixed pastry tray on her way back from work recently. Most of the pastries had very similar ingredients, so it was surprising how much variation there was between them. I love cashews so for me the standouts were the fingers (so glad there were so many!) and the Burma cashews. If I had to pick least favorites they would probably be the bird nest pistachio and the mini roses, simply since they contained so much phyllo, and I also thought the ballourie and bassma were a bit too sweet and sticky, but this doesn't mean I didn't enjoy eating them - they were still really delicious!! (Rip my calorie intake) The box has storage instructions for room temperature vs fridge vs freezer. It also has some ingredients listed for the different items but I found the descriptions on the website more helpful. My mom did mention that the ordering system is a bit complicated - she ended up waiting in line for a while before realizing she needed a ticket :( she also said it was pretty crowded on a Friday right after work. Also the prices are surprisingly low! Maybe I've just been in New York too long but I was shocked that the entire half tray was just $14.50. The inside of Shatila is beautiful I remember back in the day how they started off as a small place in Dearborn, but now they've gone big. I'm never disappointed in their sweets that includes the ice cream and fruit cocktail. I'm not a fan of their meat/spinach, cheese pies. Too salty for me. I go to Golden or Yasmeen Bakery for that stuff. Only complaint I have is parking. Parking sucks, but it's worth going there! read more

This place is incredible! What a great find while we were visiting Detroit. We went on New Years Eve and this place was PACKED! The bakery is huge and has middle eastern and traditional pastries as well as a juice/coffee/ice cream bar. I think you will find something for everyone, including vegans! I think our favorite thing was the Krumbs pan for $4--literally just the odds and ends from other middle eastern delights scooped up into a big pan! We had to buy one and we took it home on the airplane with us too--Yes, we did! All the other pastries we purchased were so good. So many treats. Savory, sweet. European. Arabic. Indian. Baklava. Wedding cakes. Fruit tarts. I seriously couldn't believe it. Tip: it was a bit chaotic and took us a moment to figure out that you have to grab a number and then wait to be called. Then you go go up, select your goods, pay and then either sit down or leave. We stopped in after dinner and PLANNED to buy dessert for the next day since Dearborn is a bit of a hike from Downtown Detroit. Well, things did not go as "planned". Although I go to Shatila regularly and they may not have the best for everything, they hit the mark on convenience and all around sweets and finger foods. Specifically this time I am highlighting spinach pies. Such pies are not supposed to "doughy" as in made in a regular bakery from their bread do and made thick; they should not be bland, as in missing the key ingredients that give it a tangy kick, and they shoUld not be monstrous, again think the bakery next door. On all fronts, Shatila checks the box. Thin, crisp, oil as it should be with the dough, and medium size (although I like them small. Explains why I never buy my spinach pies anywhere else. read more

We've been coming to Shatila for a long time. I highly recommend the baklava. Lately, we've been stopping by when we're in the mood for a sweet snack. The cakes are good, though a little low in sugar for my taste (surprising, since their baklava is so sweet). To specify, on different occasions we tried the chocolate cake, chocolate cake roll, carrot cake, cookies & cream (Oreo?) cake, and pistachio cake. The pistachio one is my favorite. The staff is always very nice and patient in answering my questions. I took off a star for 2 issues. First -- and most important -- they do not have the ingredients (or allergy info at the least) easily accessible. The staff also doesn't always know specific ingredients. The only way I found out the carrot cake had walnuts was to call later and ask them. Even then, the first person on the phone said that there weren't walnuts, but when I pressed it, they got a doubt and checked with someone else -- who said there were walnuts in the carrot cake. Thank goodness that my friend with the walnut allergy didn't eat it. Second, their cake displays weren't labeled correctly, if labeled at all. We had to ask them multiple times which cake was which. On one occasion we went at a busy time and it was loud in the store. The staff members were patient, but they couldn't hear us and we couldn't hear them. It could have been avoided if the items were labeled. That being said, we will be going back next time we're craving something sweet! read more

The toilet is disgusting and I am sure it hasn't been cleaned for weeks! This place makes so much from it's customers but has no decency to keep the toilet clean for their customers. I hope the bakery chefs don't use that toilet and go back to baking/making desserts. I couldn't swallow the bakery items I purchased just thinking about the disgusting toilet. Barf! Love this place! I had heard of them before going to Dearborn, so I had to stop by. They have a parking lot as well as some street parking around the area. Stopped here on our way home from Detroit for some sweets. Being that this was our first time, we were taken back by all their offering, however we came here to get our baklava! We walked in and they place is divided into 3 areas - ice cream/coffee/drink, baklava section and cakes. We grabbed a number and went straight for to baklava. Couple of things - I feel like the ordering is very disorganized... they kept shouting out the numbers even though nobody needed service and 2), it was difficult to determine the pricing, how to order etc - for example - price for ordering 12 pcs, etc. The person helping us said, getting the dozen would be cheaper, so we did... However, what we thought we ordered and what we got was little bit off, but we got the baklava, so that's all that mattered. Next time I visit, I'll have to try their cakes. When ordering, make sure you ask lot of questions (if you are new) and confirm your order so there's no misunderstanding on what you get. read more

Came in again yesterday (a Sunday) and the place was PACKED. Like, we pulled #93 from the ticket dispenser and they were currently serving #80. I had flashbacks to Secretary of State visits but then I realized I wasn't 100 away from my number and the light at the end of the tunnel was cake, not dropping a hundy on a tiny sticker for my license plate. So that made things a bit better. Waiting around for my number to be called while staring at the treats gave me the opportunity to gaze at the multitude of options and fantasize a plan of attack. I counted approximately 60 different types of cake/pastry slices in the French section (not counting full cakes) and deduced that if I were to try one slice per week I could sample all of their offerings in a little over a year. How about that! Best year of my life. Finally was called and we picked out a dozen cake slices, two trays of Middle-Eastern sweets, and large cup of cake with frosting to go, oh and a can of diet Pepsi for a little over $30. Not bad! We got the treats to take to family birthday dinner and everyone was thrilled by the pieces they selected. I got a cup made of chocolate filled with yellow cake, peaches, and, oddly enough, grapes. I was thrown by the grapes in there at first but found them to be quite tasty. Stacked on a round of a chocolate rice krispie treat and topped with their light whipped cream I was in a happy sugar coma by the last bite. Sure the waits can be long but the variety, tastiness of the food, and the crazy low prices sure to make it all worth it! read more

Yes their are literally 100s of dessert spots in MI and all make excellent middle eastern sweets BUT Shatila is and always will be the gold standard for middle eastern desserts in Michigan. It's one of the original mom and pops that have expanded to delivering their desserts nationwide. They have the most professional and well organized operation. Their one and only brick and mortar location in Dearborn is beautiful. They focus on making all the traditional desserts as authentic as they can and don't fray too far of that path. They have long glass counters displaying many treats, but they don't have any nameplates telling you what they are, or their price. Why on earth would they not bother to do that? So as a first timer, I went in there blind and had to ask lots of questions.
