We found out about this bakery from a Foodie event and Im glad we did! They're one of a kind with varieties of pastry. Their service is great too and their prices are super fair. This is a pistachio paradise! My favorite thing so far is the Halawit-L-Jibin. It's not as showy as the kanafeh, or the trays and trays of baklava. But the Shatila baklava is available at Zingerman's Coffee inside Plumb Market. And there are other places in the neighborhood for hot-fresh-now kanafeh. So seek out these chilled, plain looking, white rolls in the refrigerator case by the cash register. They aren't pastry per se. These are more like a sheet of fresh cheese, wrapped around a filling of clotted cream. When putting one of these treats on a tray, the woman behind the counter will dust it with a brilliant emerald spoonful of crushed pistachios, and provide a small container of rosewater syrup. Together, it's my favorite treat of the moment. And it's an incredible value at just $1.25. Which isn't to say it's the only thing I've had at Shatila. No sir. On my first trip, I got a mixed tray of all kinds of treats, the names of which I can no longer remember. I just went through the case and trusted my eyes to select the baked goods that looked most appealing. It's hard to go wrong. The only downside is that all those nuts are quite filling, and it's hard to eat as many different things as one might like. The solution is to simply go as often as you can. And maybe ask others for some specific recommendations. I'm looking forward to the day when I can feel confident in my knowledge of all the sweets contained on Shatila's shelves, but there's so much there it's going to take awhile. Every middle eastern person in America knows Shatila because they have probably mail ordered baklava from them. I was excited to see the legendary bakery first hand. There's lovely interior that fits the mid-east theme. Sweets are broken into Arabic or western and then there's a juice bar. I got a slice of kunafe which was in the counter case but they heated it up for me to eat there and it was delicious. The line was a little crazy chaotic but everyone was friendly and it was Ramadan so I can understand the crazy line. read more

I always find it to be hit or miss... it's either too sweet or too chewy because of all the syrup, but Shatila strikes the perfect balance. Same with the knafeh. It was so delicious. We even came home craving baklava and bought some, only to feel disappointed that it wasn't as good as Shatila. If you want legit, authentic, delicious Middle Eastern desserts the way grandma makes - come to Shatila Bakery in Dearborn. Prior to walking in, I have to say be ready for a line. This place is always busy with customers. They have a pretty big parking lot but it's always full. Upon walking into the bakery you'll need to take a number, be on the lookout for when they call your number otherwise you'll lose your turn. To the right of the entrance is a ice cream/coffee station where they have homemade ice cream/sorbets. In the middle of the bakery there the the seating area where people sit and relax while they eat their sweet treats. To the left is where all the magic happens. Sweets and baked goods, sugar free cookies and cakes, wedding cakes, baklava, lady fingers, anything you can think of they have behind the counter. There are about 10-15 women working the counter ensuring every customer is served. Once you order your sweets all that's next is to check out and enjoy! I ordered 3 trays of mixed sweets consisting of baklava and a few candies. Overall, this atmosphere is great, the desserts are thee best, very authentic, and it's just an awesome experience! A dream come true to finally visit Shatila Bakery, from where we've been ordering their gold standard baklava ever since I was a kid. Literally felt like I was walking into Disney Land with the bakery's beautiful dome shaped and colorful architecture, and the oasis like trees inside under which you can sit and eat goodies. Definitely recommend the khanafe, request it served warm. It comes with a side of rose water syrup but honestly it's not needed, the khanafe is delicious as is. You gotta get an assortment of baklava, it's kind of impossible not to order one of every single type. My favorite are the fingers! Shatila is one incredible bakery and has one of the best ice creams in town. Also, their baklava is probably Da Best! After having dinner nearby, we all felt the urge for some carbs. The kids wanted ice cream so that helped me out tremendously, as the choices of desserts that are available at Shatila's can really affect your decision making skills. We could have been standing around for hours trying to figure out of what to order. With ice cream on everybody's agenda, we went with coconut, pistachio and strawberry flavors. They were rich, smooth texture and absolutely delish. The coconut was bursting with flavors and had coconut flakes blended. Pistachio was packed with nuts and it was a pure delight to indulge in. I took pictures at some of the other dessert options that were available. Choices are unlimited. Unfortunately, I do not know the names of all these pastries etc. but hopefully the pictures help. Shatila is one of those places that have really set a name for themselves. It's reached a point where it became a staple in town and other nearby areas. They have a variety of backlavas, cakes, chocolates and sweets. However, my personal favorite is their ice cream. Some of the best in the state in my opinion. Their baklava is the best I have found Arkham Dearborn. Went with some colleagues to pick up a box of baklava. They have ready made boxes for around $28. It gives you a sample of different treats. Baklava, ballourie, bassma, bird nest, Burma, fingers, ghouribeh, mini rose, mixed pastries, namoura pastries. Famous bright pink sunrise Shatila box. I like most things with pistachios in them, but truth be told the diamond shaped pistachios are my favorite out of all of them. They have a lot of cake options but it's a must for good baklava. We LOVE Shatila and were so happy to be able to visit the bakery in person again! My family (Great Uncle) started ordering baklawa from Shatila back in the 1980s. We've been ordering Shatila online for the past 15 years and always make sure to get baklawa and really love the mini date mamouls. This is definitely a place you would want to come to if you have a sweet tooth. Everything is desserts, cakes, ice creams, smoothies, SO many options to choice from and it's spotless. They do everything by a number so the first thing you'll see is the little manual ticket booth. Usually, when I'm waiting for them to call on me, I go and make sure I know what I want before hand and just wait for them to wrap it up. Not so impressed with their knafe-not enough cream cheese filling and not that sweet even though I've already poured the simple syrup on top. There wasn't pistachio toppings to go. Asked about the smoothies and they said it's made of real fruits. Anyways, comes in 3 cups starting with small $3, medium $4 and large $5. We bought the large and combined the 3 flavors...mango, strawberry and strawberry-banana. Looks and sounds weird but the flavors we combined tasted like yoghurt;-). The main door was opening and closing non-stop. Take a number and look around. They have so many bakery clerks that it doesn't take long for your number to be called. Not all items have names so you have to elongate your neck and speak louder so the clerk on the other side can hear and describe what your pastry is made off. This Shatila Bakery is a tourist go-to place who wants to try middle eastern pastry with French influences. However, based from what I've tasted from them tonight is not the best. I'd rather go to Masri Sweets- less crowded, friendly clerks and free samples too. read more

The staff would much rather talk to one another and laugh with one another rather than help customers when the line is going all the way to papaya fruit market. This bakery has mid desserts. They love to pile it up with syrup and you can't even taste the pastry. The workers cannot hear you and you can't hear them saying anything. Today we picked up same pastries, sugarcane juice and a new drink - Lemon ginger drink - I liked the lemon ginger as it's unique. Kids loved the pastries from tiramasrhu, strawberry, mocha to simple vanilla. What to get: Khanafa And what about afterwards: Khanafawards we'll stop into a quiet little place and have a drink or two Shatila changed my life because my good friend Zain (hi Zain) (not Zayn Malik) (but kind of) insisted that I come here and try the Khanafa (and Baklava) (he's a back lover) so I did and I loved it but I also noticed (thanks to Los Yelp) that they have a very popular rival, just down the road - also in Dearborn - that is called Masri Sweets, and the reviews for both were very stellar, so I tried both of them (close to closing time). Let's just say that both are delicious. Products at Shatila are excellent, but service is awful. Whereas the products at Masri changed my life forever and were thrice as good and are my number one must-get when I'm in Detroit - and a reason to come to Detroit. The service there was wonderful as well. Shatila can't live up to Masri - but I still like it. Reasons Shatila was less stellar: - Products were lukewarm - They weren't too happy with me coming in close to closing time - They weren't too eager to serve me - They didn't overwhelm me with friendliness and free samples like Masri did - Didn't taste as off-the-charts as Masri, but still very good I'm definitely giving both places at 5 for being so unique and spectacular and deserving of you giving them both a try - however let it be known that one is massively superior to the other on every level in my personal opinion. Both of them could be a little bit more customer-friendly in terms of the signage telling people what is and isn't allowed, but then I know that there are very low income areas nearby and that they probably get a decent amount of trouble - as a lot of people in the Detroit metro area do. Just make sure you come here and get Khanafa, and make sure you try Masri Sweets as well so you can decide for yourself which one is better. And remember both of them should be eaten gooey and hot and fresh. If it's been sitting around it's never going to be as good. Classy bakery with ample space. The orange Kunafa is a must, the cheese is more flavorful than the regular Kunafa. I love their pastries, my favorites are the pistachio baklava and the cream filled filo. They have a second counter with drinks and ice cream. If you like pomegranate you NEED to try the pomegranate drink, it tastes like you're biting into a fresh sweet juicy tart pomegranate. I even add some water in it after a few sips to lessen the powerful flavor. The bakery provides a water fountain and cups. The staff is attentive and friendly and there's always multiple servers behind the counter to help you with your order. The indoor seating area is impeccable with many tables and chairs. At night when it gets dark they've got cute string lights to make the palm trees sparkle. They also have a few tables for outdoor seating. read more

Loved the Shatila experience. After having their famous sweets over the last many years living in Michigan, we were glad to make the trip. We tried a variety of things including the sugarcane juice. I was so excited to see sugarcane juice that I had to have it. It was quite expensive - $5 for the smallest glass which was a bit much but I had to have it for old times sake. Their bakery is bustling and you know they're really that good when you have to stand for 10-15 min for your turn. I knocked off a star because I didn't know the sweets beyond baklava and there's no names or descriptions of the sweets. Plus they have so many customers to serve that it's practically impossible to ask them what each sweet is. So, my suggestion to Shatila is to add the sweet name and a brief description so that I can decide instead of being rushed when it's my turn. This is the holy grail of Middle Eastern delights hands down. I have a few more to attend but this is a shrine for pastries. Shatila has some of the most celebrated desserts ever. The organization of their pastry case is just on point and the ice cream/coffee bar is just on point. I also love the palm tree decor inside the center of the bakery! I had a small arrangement of goodies which I can't remember the names of BUT they were just flat-out delish!! The baklava had the perfect amount of sweetness to it, the tubed crispy noodle treat with walnuts and honey was excellent, and the squared-noodle pastry with the rose water on the side just swung for the fences. This was very good tasting all around. I'm to come every morning as along as I'm here and just try something new each time. I also loved their Turkish coffee which was specially made. Shatila is a staple in Dearborn and Detroit. It's a must to come here and pay respects to the dessert Gods. I recommend coming here early in the am to avoid possible traffic in the lot and inside the store due to it's popularity. Order an arrangement, head straight to a table, and just devour away.
