The farm is so cute!!! It's a small spot but I learned a lot. I'd probably recommend the early morning tour time because the machines are still running. The operations had finished by the time we started the afternoon tour. We got to pet one week old baby cows which was so cute!!! The website did advertise that we could feed them but we didn't actually get to which was kind of disappointing but the baby cow eating my skirt was cute enough!! lol And milk samples are A LOT!! My family went on a tour yesterday. The farm was easy to find, 45 minutes north of Liberty area. The tour took us through the dairy processing area. It was spotless and Mr Leroy Shatto gave this part of the tour. It was fun seeing the process from start to finish. Next, we went out to part of the farm that had the dairy house getting lined up ready to get washed down and milk and I will tell you that the dairy cows were huge. I know cows are big, but these cows were huge. And I gave them some wide berth even though they were safely contained and off offense area. And the young lady who gave the information about the barn was very informative. There were two one week old baby heifers that we were allowed to pet and they were just darling the little kids on the tour were almost as excited as I was. Then we went back to the front porch of the farm shop and we drank eight different flavors of milk chocolate and root beer are my favorite. We tried some cheeses inside and we left with some cheese curds and a type of Havarti. We also tried vanilla ice cream, and the salted caramel ice cream , which was so rich. Checked the beans, the grind, the water, the press, and then a cold glass of the 1% with use by date of March 16 - and THAT was the problem! I could not drink it! And I have 2 to 3 glass bottles in my fridge all the time! I use your skim, 1% when I can find it, whole milk and recently the Chocolate % in half gallon. Heck, I gave a 1/2 gal of that chocolate as a gift, and front door delivery last weekend because I 'brag' about your product!! Lots of variety of milks and flavors! I would note that these flavors are very sugary (I'd imagine more marketed to children!). If you do a tour with them, I'd recommend adding on the ice cream option. It was delicious and the service was prompt at the ice cream bar. You can also browse through the many offerings in the little farm shop they have there. The setting is relatively rural and you get a good look at the process for bottling, producing, and even get to meet some of the cows. Their line of milk, cheese, butter and coffee creamer is delicious. I called to book a tour but they only offer one tour a day and weekend tours are booked out a month in advance. They suggested to visit their country store from 1-3pm to try sample and to view the farm. I was a little disappointed that they didn't have a story board, timeline or any history facts available to view. I was able to meet the owner who was very nice but didn't give us enough historical information. Overall not worth my time or drive. It was a dark and stormy night ... no, actually it was a grey and misting afternoon. One of the items on my must do in Kansas list was take he tour at the Shatto Milk Dairy Farm. My favorite sister drove - thankfully. It took almost an hour and a half to get there and FPO and I would have gotten completely lost on our own because cell phone reception in the area was spotty ... but it was worth it. Shatto Milk has organized tours where you have a guide and get to see the facility and learn about the dairy farm before going into their tasting room where you can try all different kinds of flavored milk from chocolate to strawberry to cotton candy and so many more. I called ahead for reservations but apparently I wasn't quick enough because a couple hundred school kids beat us to the tour. Still, we went because we were told we would be able to look into the calf barn and visit the tasting room and gift shop. As I mentioned it took almost an hour and half to get there. It was raining when we arrived and cold so we hurried into what turned out to be the entrance to the gift shop and tasting room. We were met by their dog, Lucy. She was exhausted by the hundreds of school children but still took the time to wake up, come over, and greet us and show us around. The people we spoke with were really friendly and told us about the dairy and operations. I like that they're a small operation- about 400 cows (I think) and they're only closed in when they're being milked. The staff even let us go up into an employee area where we could see down into the processing room. We visited the calf barn and got to pet the calves (we also gave a wide berth to the "splash zone" around the adult cows also in the barn. It was a lot of fun and quite aromatic. After the calf barn we returned to the tasting room and tried eleven different flavors of milk. Root beer was my favorite and I bought a quart that came in a real, old-fashioned glass milk jar. You pay a deposit on the bottle (I think it's $2) and can return it to any grocery store that sells Shatto Milk for the money but I really liked it (it says "Yummy" on the side) and carried it all the way back to Hawaii with me. This was a great field trip. I enjoyed it immensely and will look back fondly on it as one of the high points of my vacation. read more

What a way to bring back the milkman ! Shatto you are making buying local Fran fresh favorites even more convenient with at home delivery. This was my first order and I was pleased. I forgot to leave a cooler at the door but my milk man Mike left my items in a sealed bag on my porch. I ordered the staples milk, bread, eggs, and bacon plus I added some extras to try out the full experience. The staples can be ordered once or on a recurring cycle you choose based on your family needs. I added to my order lasagna and a pumpkin roll. The lasagna came frozen and we put it quickly back into the freezer and plan to eat it this week. The pumpkin roll we cracked open and had to try it was from a local bakery and was moist full of that fall pumpkin flavor with rich cream cheese filling perfectly paired with a glass of shatto milk. The bread was fresh so I'm sure we will need to eat it quickly and the bacon and eggs I will keep you posted but how could they be wrong. Back to the milk man... he left a little about himself in a note with a brochure of items that can be delivered. This milkman man doesn't just deliver milk he brings anything from prepared meals to meats eggs snacks fresh fruits and vegetables pantry items breads and even non-food items. Today, Shatto in Osborne, MO, had their cheese open house. I saw it last week on Facebook, and knew this was the time to see the Shatto Farm in person. I had a car load: Sara D., my son (The Other R.), and his girlfriend. I drove all the way to Osborne. It's about 1 hour, 15 minutes. Though I had seen the Shatto farm online, I expected all kinds of lights, and huge signs, proclaiming their product in all it's glory. Atleast one billboard, on I 35, (where I missed my turn), but no billboards, and I did miss my turn. Here's a warning, you miss your turn off of I-35, and your Garmin will take you down gravel roads, eventually you'll find a small paved highway. There's a sign, an entrance, in front of the farm. That's it. I came upon Shatto, it snuck up on me, quietly. It's a pristine, white country dairy farm, with a country store selling muffins, candy, and also selling Shatto t-shirts, milk bottles, cups, ice cream, milk, Shatto soap....you know all about Shatto products. They also serve shakes. (Dumb me, still banging myself on the head for not getting a shake. So that is an indication I need to go back.) They have a little milk truck parked in the parking lot. There's a Shatto silo over looking the barn. We didn't take the tour, it was offered, but only once today. The owner, I suspect it's the owner, kindly, quietly, walked over to us,and told us "You can walk around the farm, if you want, and milk a cow. You can kind of peek in the dairy farm area. Let me know if you have any questions." Quiet and calm. Later, I sent a text to Sara D, and I said, "How come they are so quiet at Shatto, WHEN THEY KNOW THEY MAKE THE BEST PRODUCT ON EARTH?" You know by reading my other reviews, that would be coffee milk, and pumpkin spice egg nog. Huge bowls of different cheese was on display, with crackers. The cheese is good, very good. Top notch. While we were there, we watched workers making yellow cheddar cheese, in a huge window. That's cool. That's where they make the cheese. I bought a Shatto glass, Shatto soap, a muffin. They had a huge display of cookie cutters, and after months of searching for the right sized Missouri shaped cookie cutter, I found one. That is perfect. We went to the calf barn, and they had 2 little calves, then a cow. We all milked the cow. For some of us, (the Other R. in particular) it was their first time to milk a cow. Priceless. Yes, milk comes out of utters, and it's cool to milk one for a first time, super special being that it's a Shatto milk cow. That milk eventually becomes coffee milk or rootbeer milk, or butter, or pumpkin spice egg nog. Yummy stuff we drink, alot. Sure, there's Shatto milk in the grocery store, but to really experience it, take a road trip up north. The farm is small, the sign is smaller. The company is quiet. We took this fun tour in January and it was awesome! We got to milk a cow (if you're interested), feel the machines that extract the milk, and meet some of the owners of the business. Very enlightening and ethical farm based on the tour. If you're going in the winter or the summer, be warned that it's primarily outside for the tour. The tour itself lasts no more than 45 minutes. There is a milk tasting at the end of the various milk flavors as well as an ice cream bar serving their products. This tour is great for people of all ages! Do not trust Google maps, it will lead you astray and cost you 20 minutes extra time. Once you arrive you will find that the people who make Shatto milk are very passionate and dedicated about the process. They allow you to sample 7 different flavors of milk on the tour in addition to the 3 kinds of butter, and 4 varieties of cheese that they produce. All the milk flavors are delicate but true. This makes it vèry drinkable and refreshing. No one has better, fresher milk or such crazy delicious flavors. Root beer, cotton candy, banana, and even cookies and cream! These nuts even made rainbow popcorn ice cream! Do yourself a favor and make sure you ask them for a sample... It's double, double, top secret! The type of cheese that Shatto Dairy makes is called cheese curds. Highly seasoned and flavorful Nuggets of cheesy goodness. The texture is not for everyone, It's a little rubbery, but some people are absolutely addicted to them. Trust me, The mushroom garlic flavor is killer! The butter is divine! Silky and creamy with a sweet butter flavor. They sell three different luscious renditions. Garlic butter, honey butter, and the real deal butter. The tour is offered on Monday through Saturday at 10:30 AM. There are no tours on Sunday. There are no other times. In the spring and summer when the weather is beautiful the wait times to get a ticket for the tour could be upwards of a month. So, keep this in mind and book early. The cost of the tour is five dollars per person and children under two are free, an absolute steal! Can you really put a price on the look on their little face when they milk a cow for the first time and that warm milk comes squirting out into the Bucket ! Priceless! Since there are so many people that go on the tour they divided up into different groups. Some of the groups start with the tasting room while some of them start with the cow barn. Occasionally the tours get a little mixed up with who's going where and who belongs to which tour group. This causes some confusion and ends up costing them some revenue. Some people were able to walk in late, join a tour and never pay. If you have little kids, be very wary of what they touch in the calf/cow pen area. As you might expect, there is cow manure stuck to everything. The Tour would really benefit from some hand sanitizer or wipes along the way for the little ones. I guess even adults like clean hands. I crawled out of bed early on a Saturday morning after a late Friday night to road trip with Rhonda S. to Shatto's Cheese Open House. That's love right there. Shatto's "headquarters" is a cute dairy farm in the middle of nowhere Osborne, MO. The hour and a half drive from Raytown to Osborne was completely worth it as soon as I bit into a luscious piece of their cheese. I also sampled their Pumpkin Spice Eggnog which sent my punokin-loving self into pure bliss. Their Shatto store was selling all sorts of milk, cheese, t-shirts, glasses, and muffins. After eating some samples and roaming around the gift shop, we headed to the barn to milk a cow. Albeit Ms. Cow whacked me in the face with her tail, I enjoyed squirting out some of her precious milk. After being on my bucket list for YEARS, today I was finally able to cross Shatto Farm off my list! A truly unique experience, Shatto offers an inside peak to see how their milk is produced and bottled. Dairies are a thing of the past so if you have the opportunity to visit, please do. Dairy agriculture is something people don't know a lot about, you'll definitely pick up a few things to impress your friends! The four sections of the tour are fairly quick but informative at only $5 a head. (Keep in mind, this is a working dairy farm so the cows are on a schedule!) You'll tour the production/bottle room, their barn, the milking stall, and sample seven milk flavors (banana, strawberry, cotton candy, cookies 'n cream, root beer, chocolate, and coffee) as well as their butters and cheese curds. Their root beer milk took first place at the World Dairy Exposition; strawberry comes in at second. This stuff is like liquid heaven wrapped in rainbows. If I could live off just their milk, I would. In fact, if I could secretly live in their country store, I would. Although I don't know how long I could get away with that... You'll want to call ahead to make reservations in advance. We were one of the first few people who arrived and within thirty minutes the country store was full with everyone being sorted into four groups. As far as directions go, I followed my GPS until I hit 116 Hwy, then turned onto 33 North, and kept driving until I saw the farm on the right-hand side. I was told to follow directions on Shatto's website but I left my Google maps running in the background to test it and it still lead to Shatto. (Follow at your own discretion, their website mentions Yahoo and Mapquest are incorrect.) Shatto is an absolutely wonderful place to spend an afternoon. Be sure to bring extra cash for souvenirs. MILK I have tried the skim milk for everyday use and I love it. It seems more opaque then other skims I have purchased. I have used the whole milk for recipe's and it seems to work out great. Chocolate milk is ok, but not the best I have had. Removing the cap can be difficult, so I use a knife to flip it up. BUTTER I love the butter, which I save for fresh baked breads and to use in recipe's where the flavor of the butter is high priority. It is pricy, but I like the idea of buying local. ICE CREAM I was really looking forward to this. I picked out a pint of vanilla at Whole Foods. When I picked it up off the shelf it was deceptively light in weight. We had it for dessert that night and the flavor was spot on. Unfortunately, as I expected, it was overly whipped with air. It was not the dense rich texture that you get with other gourmet ice cream. Sometimes you just gotta get out of town, right? I was feeling that way myself lately, and decided to do a day of agricultural tourism around the KC metro. First stop? Shatto Milk! About an hours drive away from downtown KC, this is a pretty great little farm, and I should put emphasis on the "little," for as well known as this product is in KC, they do so much of the work from a TINY space! But the dairy farm is picturesque, with an old country store, a picnic area, and of course the dairy operations. The tour is $5, and that's probably the right price. It's a fun tour, and it's informative, but I'm not going to go much into it. Why would I tell you everything the tour guides want to tell you? That'd just be silly. I will say that it features some pretty darn cute baby calves. AND a lot of tasting. One thing that really impressed me about this operation is that the founder and president of the company took a hands on approach to the tours. You're not likely to find that at most tours. I think that really emphasized how much of a family operation Shatto Milk is. Nobody here is too important to answer a question or squeeze an udder. I would definitely recommend taking this tour, but with a couple of conditions. If you're coming from KC, pair it with another activity, like maybe something in St Joe or Weston. I simply say that b/c the Shatto Milk tour isn't a LONG experience, and some might think the ride not worth it. We paired it with a couple of other activities, and were very happy. Take a tour of the Shatto Dairy Farm! It was fun, informative, and of course the samples were delicious. Kids and adults would enjoy it. There are four stations of their tour: the milk production portion (they put the little sucker machine on your thumbs so you can feel what it feels like!), the barn, the bottling room, and the tasting room. The barn was my favorite part, as we got to try our hand at milking a dairy cow AND got to pet two adorable baby calves. The tasting room was awesome too. If you've ever had shatto products, you know how good they are. They had their flavored milk, as well as two flavors of butter to try. They have ice cream and milkshakes to purchase as well. Our favorite experience near Kansas City!! Definitely a must do, especially for city dwellers who've never been on a farm. Their tours are extremely popular and can sell our months in advance since they only do one a day, so definitely book early!! We accidentally arrived 40 minutes early, so we met the owner, Leroy, and a couple folks who work there. All were very kind and knowledgeable. Since we were there early, they took us to pet the baby calves, some of which were one day old!! They also sucked on our fingers, since our phalanges look like bottle feeders. Pretty cool experience! During the tour they have a hands off policy to move the tour efficiently, so we were really lucky to interact with the calves! During the tour, they show you the milking process, the bottling process, baby calves, you get to milk a cow for a couple seconds (it's mainly squeezing one udder), and try their many milk flavors, butters, and cheeses. The young men that worked there were such a good help! One of them took us to the see the baby cows & the other gave us information about how the cattle themselves ! So my review is not on the actual farm/dairy, but their product which I recently sampled while visiting Kansas City. First off let me say that I am not a huge fan of milk, however I think I have found a new love in my life. After hearing a friend praise the multiple unique flavors I knew that I needed to try some of their unique creations next time I was visiting Kansas City. Recently I managed to get to try the Strawberry, Cotton Candy, and Cookies & Crème milk and I have to say that I was very surprised. First off, the Strawberry Milk was delicious, unlike the regular strawberry milk option that I have tried before. Next up is the Cookies & Cream Milk, which tasted more like a light chocolate milk with a slight cookie taste, it was still pretty good. Finally, Cotton Candy Milk, where has this been all my life? Seriously this milk was exactly what milk should be delicious sweet with a slight cotton candy aftertaste which will take you back to being a kid.
