We drove down from Omaha for Jowler Creeks 10th annual grape stomp. It's only about 2.5 hrs or less from Omaha so it was perfect for a day trip. We pre-purchased tickets to this sold out event in August and have been looking forward to it for weeks. The winery itself if so darling. I've been to Sonoma County and it reminded me of the smaller wineries you see up there. I love seeing the rows of the vines and pulling in to see their large outdoor patio and barn set up I was so excited. They are only doing outdoor dining for Covid-19 reasons but had several spots to order drinks if you are there for a party. by 12pm it was really filling in. The grape stomp was up on the stairs and in a private tent. They served us our wine samples and lunch before they started doing the grape stomp. We walked around for a bit to see the vines and the sheep and chickens that help keep the ground healthy. The actual stomping was awesome! We learned the juice from what we stomped helps fertilize the grounds, so it's actually going back into the wine, how cool?! The owners couldn't have been nicer and more welcoming to the 12pm group. I highly recommend this winery any weekend of the year, but if you can go during the grape stomp weekends, try that! read more

Jowler Creek Winery is dog friendly (as long as your pet is kept on a leash and mild mannered. Please note that there are some lifestock on the grounds. If your pet is unable to handle themselves, it may just be best to leave your little 4 legged friend at home). My husband, our little girl and I stopped by this winery on Monday, August 21 for their Kansas City Eclipse & Sips festival to view the total solar eclipse. This winery is not normally open on Mondays, but was open for this special once in a lifetime phenomenal. This winery is generally populated by locals and a lot of the people we met seemed very excited and surprised to find that we are from Los Angeles and traveled all this way to come to this small winery. Anyways, with general admission to this festival ($25 prior to tax/ person) came 5 flights of wine to try. I ended up trying the following: Vignoles. Butterfly Blush, Red Cock a Doodle, Muskrato de Missouri, Solar Sangria (only made for the special festival). I thought the Red Cock a Doodle was okay and the Muskrato de Missouri was a little better. But the solar sangria was perfect. The fruity flavors really made the tasting enjoyable, as all the favors went well together (who can say no to sangria?). Too bad I couldn't get a bottle of the sangria to enjoy back home. For general admission wine tasting, you had to go line up under the tent to get your tasting. The pours were sadly not very generous. The organization was a miss as well. There were 3 lines, but not properly labeled for what line does what. One line was for those to purchase bottles of wine, where you can also do a wine tasting. The line at the end was also for wine tasting. But there was also a line in the middle for wine tasting that no one seemed to be going to (as it seemed some what hidden behind the 2 long lines). Restrooms for general admission were portapotties. I never used it during our visit, but my husband said it was clean when he used it. There were also portable sinks with soap and paper towels to wash hands after use of the restroom. The grounds of this winery was clean, but since it was raining and pouring most of the time we were here, it was pretty muddy. The owners' dog Vignoles (same name as one of their wines, how cute) walked the grounds and greeted people sitting outside. Moving from one group to the next, she eventually found her way to us. It was so cute when she and my little girl dog nosed each other (aww....). Vignoles is a sweet and gentle dog and am glad that our little girl got along with her. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves. It was nice to be have a place to view the eclipse, while drinking wine, in a place that wasn't too crowded. By the way, this winery only has a small modest menu of food items (cheese, crackers, meat, etc). Visitors are allowed to bring their food onto the property. And on occasion, food trucks are parked her to sever visitors, along with live music on weekends. read more

We went to wine #2 thinking maybe they were just low on the first wine... happened again so we asked if for the remaining 5 samples we could just choose one of the remaining 5 and have a "super sample" of that one so we had enough product to actually make a decision on. Although I don't live in KC, I am intent on trying all of the great, local businesses whenever I find myself in this area. As a lover of wine and frequent winery visitor, I was excited to find Jowler Creak Winery early on a Saturday afternoon. They were hosting a wine tasting with baby animals (I think the animals were advertised more for children), but of course I had to go! Wine and bunnies? Sign me up! The land and space of Jowler Creek Winery is beautiful. The staff was extremely welcoming, and indulged my desire to play with the bunnies in between tasting their wines. I was impressed that they were the first green winery in Missouri! I enjoyed the tasting and left with a bottle of my favorite: the Traminette. It seems from the website that Jowler Creek frequently holds events to get patrons and families visiting regularly, which is a fantastic way to bring in guests (especially us out-of-towners!). Midwest wineries are specially unique in a good way. Good down to earth people, working the land and sharing what they love in this life with others. When I found out how rare this quality was I became even more appreciative and determined to explore more often. Although I do find Midwest wineries to offer more sweet options, they are just as worthy of at least a try. Really enjoyed the semi- sweets and always surprise myself by opting for them. The dry options are smooth and filled with lots of varying notes of floral, fruit and spice. Owners have 2 children, a dog and a cat, and all are exceptional hosts. This particular early summer night we attended the BBQ night. You being your preferred meat and they provide the grill. Sides like hot baked potatoes, pasta salad, and Smores were also available for $1- $2. I love walking through vineyards but this one seemed to be all fenced off, which is understandable. They had a sitting area, with a fire pit and surrounding tables. In the tasting room I did see something that might have mentioned a trail but couldn't figure out how to get there. Indoor seating was so lovely but since the weather was more so we'll have to take them up on that option at a later date. read more

We ventured out to Jowler creek on the spur of the moment. While we live fairly close, we hadn't tried their wines in several years. The space was fairly small, but they had a couple of tents set up outside for distanced seating. Denise explained their offerings including their Creek Club. We weren't sure we wanted to join since we were unfamiliar with the wine. We got some samplers, and Denise told us about the wines and gave us a guide. We ended up joining the Creek Club, and Denise took good care of us and our first purchase. We are looking forward to participating in some of the special events. read more

I'm not sure how I got so lost, but after turning onto a dirt road, I found this vineyard and winery. The sign said, "wine tasting in back." It was indeed in back of their home, in the basement. A new winery building is currently under construction. Truly a mom-and-pop operation, co-owner/husband Jason Gerke came into the shop with a baby. I started to explain that I'm not a wine person, but that I was lost and saw their sign, so thought I'd stop by. He said that it was fine because he had work to do, and he could just as well direct me back to the interstate. That's not what I intended at all, and I found it a bit off-putting. Nevertheless, I did try some wine. I thought the Norton was the best--it's apparently a Missouri-bred grape, which makes a good red. I bought one for my SO. She liked it. read more

I liked the vibe here. The owners started growing vines as a hobby in 2008 and what started out as fun has blossomed into a great business. The owners were personable, the wines were great and the drive out to the winery complete with winding hills was a nice escape. If you're looking for super classy and upscale this isn't going to ring your bell, but for those looking for a friendly introduction to wine growing you'll feel right at home here. I highly recommend the tour and tasting class which is offered twice a month. The little tastes of food paired with wine and the opportunity to learn about the winery and their methods made for a fun hour. In the Summer you will see sheep roaming the vineyard, we missed out on that but did see the chickens! Sustainable, local, family owned... there's a lot to love here.
