I couldn't help myself but immediately attack the garlic appetizer. So I apologize for the demolished garlic appetizer. I spoke with the chef and he said that the hummus is handmade, daily. Same thing with the flat bread that is served. The garlic appetizer is lovely as it is a refreshing starter with some bite to it. Garlic is very present so beware those who are not a fan of garlic. I do recommend with the olive oil as it adds a nice silky smooth texture. The fries served with the Gyro Wrap meal. We're crunchy and seasoned with paprika. A unique choice that I enjoy. As for the Star, the Gyro Wrap. It is served in a beautiful presentation. The meat is soft and very intense in flavor. The vegetables in the wrap are tender and add depth. The sauce which I assume is Tzatziki Sauce resembles the thickness of mayo which is different from other Tzatziki Sauce. I do love the freshness it adds to the wrap! Absolutely blown away by our experience at Shawarma Boys! I ordered the Gyro Plate a perfect mix of lamb and beef with rice and salad, tzatziki sauce and my son went with the beef shawarma plate, Arabi-style--both were packed with flavor, perfectly seasoned, and incredibly fresh. Every bite tasted like it was made with care and authenticity.The Arabic style beef was crispy on the edges which made it even better. We couldn't leave without dessert, and the baklava with honey and pistachio drizzle was out of this world--crispy, sweet, and just the right balance of richness. To top it all off, we enjoyed Turkish coffee that was bold, smooth, and the perfect ending to an amazing meal. Forgot to mention the freshly made Falafel, not pre made and frozen. The chef here makes everything from scratch with family recipes. From the food to the overall experience, everything was top-notch. Definitely a place we'll keep coming back to. I wrote this draft a few days ago and have really struggled with whether or not to post it. I hate to write a bad review for a local business, but you know what else I hate? Wasting time and money. Let me explain... I walked in at 4:34PM and asked for a menu to take to the car parked right outside the door so my wife could help with our order. The lady was very kind and allowed me to do this. I returned 15 minutes later and waited as she quickly finished taking someone else's order, and then she took mine. The time is now 4:52PM (cue the credit card swipe). Other people start wandering in, ordering, and waiting, some sit to dine-in, others sit for to-go orders. No one knows the fate that is about to befall them. Before we continue, and to be fair, the sign at the host stand says to expect a 15-20 min wait because they make each order fresh. Cool with me, I love fresh food! All we ordered was shawarma and the sides that their meals/sandwiches come with. When in Rome, right? Let's take a step back here. In my near-professional opinion (this is the food of my ethnic heritage) shawarma requires at least two key elements (unless you're desperate and need a quick fix at home): a vertical rotisserie and seasoning. Call me high maintenance. The food we were given at 5:40PM (yes, 48 minutes later) was chunks of pre-cut and then cooked (unseasoned) chicken and plain ground beef. Both had sumac sprinkled on top as garnish. Folks, beef shawarma deserves to be properly sliced and layered onto a plate or into a pita. Beef shawarma is not ground beef. Full stop. I'll include photos here just so that you can validate my claims, but the 48-minute wait for 2 sandwiches and 2 plates is absolutely unacceptable, regardless of what you're trying to pass off as middle eastern food. I only wish I had been as lucky as some of you and showed up here to find them closed (that actually did happen to me the first time I showed up here during their posted business hours and now I see that this experience was really my fault for trying again). I felt so ashamed at myself that I left a tip at the time I ordered. Had I only known... "But Danny, did you say something? Did they try and make it better?" Nope and nope. I wanted to be cool, I wanted to be patient, but the minutes kept ticking by and at one point about 30 minutes in one guy said my food was almost ready. Thirty minutes isn't far from 20 minutes so I gave a little grace. As the lady handed me the food she did say "sorry sir." I looked her in the eye and calmly replied "it has almost been an entire hour." And then I walked out to the car where my wife and children had been waiting. We won't ever be back here. There are so many better options for actual, flavorful, real shawarma around here. read more

Pretty good Middle Eastern place, specializing in shawarma. Kind of a bare-bones ambiance, though I doubt many people show up to eat at the restaurant. Tried them twice, though when I showed up the first time at 11:30, I was told that the kitchen wasn't ready yet and to come back in 20 minutes. Seriously? If your kitchen isn't ready by the stated opening time, just bump that time back or you'll get angry customers. Second time was the charm, I came by at noon and ordered a chicken shawarma plate with a side of dolmas (stuffed grape leaves). The chicken plate was very good, though the dolmas were a bit too tart and mushy. Still, it was very good and I'd eat it again. Due to the good food with 'meh' service the first time around, I'll average it out at a 3-star on the 'CTJ Scale', as noted below. 5 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Jesus good. Would be OK passing away after finishing a plate here. 4 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Mary good. Would be OK having a nosh here with Mother Mary. 3 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Joseph good. BLUF: Good food, made to order, authentic, and opportunity to support a small family owned local business, recommend ordering for pickup as the dine-in experience leaves a lot to be desired. As a Dearborn, Michigan native (home to the largest concentration of the Arab diaspora outside of the Middle East) I'm always skeptical to try Mediterranean offerings, but I was pleasantly surprised with my culinary experience at Shawarma Boys. We started with the Hummus, then tried the Beef Shawarma Plate and Gyro Plate. The hummus was fresh, but the menu description is confusing, it implies an additional cost for the inclusion of olive oil but ours had no shortage of it. Also, weird thing to up-charge for as a Mediterranean restaurant. The bread provided for dipping was just okay, it's not made in house, but it was lightly toasted and warm when brought to the table. The inclusion of some carrot or celery sticks would be a welcomed addition. Moving on to the entrees, they both had a generous portion of rice and small Fatoush salad. The salad was great, and expertly coated in the signature vinaigrette I associate with other delicious Mediterranean salads I've had in the past. The rice was also tasty, well seasoned, but probably too generous of a portion size. The Gyro meat was better than the beef shawarma in my opinion, but your mileage and palate may vary. When I go back, I'll probably try one of their wraps instead of their plates. The dine-in experience was not great. The wall mounted TV had a static menu displayed for the duration of our visit, and there was no music playing in the background. No fountain drinks, all beverage options are canned sodas or bottled water. They charge $1.99 for a Member's Mark bottle of water, the price of two waters covers the $3.98 I could use to buy a 40 pack of the same water from Sam's Club. Maybe I'm spoiled, but I'm accustomed to bottomless free iced water when I'm dining in somewhere. to The only two employees appeared to be the Owner/Chef and who I assume was his mother. They don't have a separate wait staff, so the Owner wears all the other hats (waiter, bus boy, cashier. . .). All of which I share to drive home the point that I recommend their food, but don't recommend you eat it there. read more

Excellent chicken plate! The portions are huge! I had that aforementioned plate while my husband had the beef and we were very happy about how much we were given. Chicken sliced on a bed of rice, hot cucumber salad and delicious dressing to go with it add great flavor! The lady was very friendly with my husband as he picked it up. We called over the phone. It was a very small shop but that does not deter the flavor that is BIG, BIG, BIG! the chicken was well seasoned and tender and complemented the rice and the salad was refreshing. It was a great meal and it lasted for two days for me. My husband ate it all! He said the beef was very good so we will be back and I'll try the beef next time. I went again and this time I took my mom with me planning on asking them to use the Lebanese bread which I did. I am not sure if they forgot or a simple mistake. The plates came out with the same wrap I didn't like the last time. I still believe the meat so far is the most legit but sadly I didn't get what I want even though they have it. It is a cute shop with frames from Istanbul. I asked the owner and he said it was supposed to be a Turkish restaurant they decided to turn it into a shawarma shop. Family owned business and the staff is extremely friendly as one might imagine. The chicken shawarma is the star of the show and has great flavors and freshly made. It can be hard to find truly authentic flavor, but they do an amazing job with that. Came in for lunch the other day, I was the only one there which usually means the place isn't that good right? Wrong. The aroma of the restaurant embraces you on your way in, and I was greeted with two smiling gentlemen, one who was the cook and I know he doesn't have to be hospitable if he doesn't want to. He chose to be anyway. All tables were neatly set, and the entire place was clean, which I can respect. I got the gyro plate, which came with their rice, salad and a heaping amount of gyro meat. They added some pita bread on the side which I'm not sure if I was supposed to get, but it was phenomenal too! Their pita bread is more thin, like a tortilla, which made it easy grab my food with when desired. The meat was incredibly tender, the best gyro meat I've had in San Antonio by far, I'm surprised this place isn't on the map yet. This was the first time I tried this place and it was very delicious! I had looked at the reviews before going and noticed what I got looked a bit different than the review photos (in a good way). I found out after the meal that the ownership changed and the new owner prides himself on using all quality ingredients and preparing everything fresh to order. You can taste how fresh the ingredients are and that everything was made with care. Because it was made to order, it does take a few minutes more for it to come out but it was still quick and I much rather wait a little while longer than to get something that has been sitting out. The plate itself was stacked full of meat, rice, and salad. I overate and I still feel like my plate looked full at the end lol! The inside of the restaurant was empty when we got there but I did see several people picking up their to-go orders. I came for dinner hoping to support a new middle eastern restaurant in the area. When I arrived the chef or perhaps owners were outside. I walked into this hugely flourescent lighting that could blind you. Another couple was also dining. I waited 2 minutes before they came in from outside and greeted me and asked my order. The gyros plate arrived with cheap wrapped plastic ware, it was dry, with 1 thin pita slice and had some kind of cold corn salad on the side with 2 small compotes of Tsatziki and hummus to moisten it all.
