Wow.. normally I grade "international" foods in the Monterey/Santa Cruz area on a curve (excluding Mexican) because let's face it.. the quality of international foods in this area are just not very good. But no, not this place. It is amazing even stacked up against San Jose & SF places. Every item is seasoned from the rice to the pita and the shawarma meats are sauteed with onions and peppers and some amazing spice blend. We were confused by why they received a 5 star rating. They are in a store behind a Chevron gas station. Apparently, its take out only. There is no seating provided inside or out. It appeared no food was ready or available. Very strange and confusing. My dad had told us about this place recently so when my mom and I were filling up our propane tanks at Chevron we decided to stop by. It's a shop that's inside the Chevron Gas station that makes the place smell heavenly. The guy working there was really nice and explained to us the different foods on the menu and what the popular items were. I got the Chicken Shawarma wrap (not pictured) and the Greek fries which were amazing. Got all the fillings for it and didn't regret a thing though some of the peppers were really hot. It's been awhile since I've found a place with place with decent Greek fries and this place just raised the standard for all future Mediterranean restaurants I'll visit. My mom got the Lamb and Beef Shawarma plate and she really liked it. The wait wasn't too long and it was nice that we could see the whole process of how they made our food. I know my family will probably be stopping by a lot more in the future. read more

The food here is so, so good! I stopped in to try it out based upon all of the positive Yelp reviews and am glad that I did. The chicken plate was excellent. As I was waiting, I was given an appetizer to enjoy - similar to a samosa - that was incredible. The bread, rice, chicken, and salad that came with the plate were all fantastic. My lil belly kept yelling mediterranean food n I did not want to drive all the way to nick the Greek or denetras and they have 5 stars so I was like let me go look and if it looks clean it's a go. I can't believe I waited so long to try this place. I'd seen it for awhile but didnt frequent Castroville enough to try it, and knew based on reviews it'd be better fresh rather than delivered. I was correct, this is probably hands down some of the best food I've eaten in the area. I regret not trying it sooner! Located inside a chevron right off the highway, I ordered online last week and it was so amazing I had to come back this week for more. My husband ordered the Philly and they suggested spicy so we ordered that next time. He absolutely loved both. I had a gyro wrap last time and tried their lamb and beef shawarma this time. Completely amazing and delicious both times. Their Greek fries are crispy and seasoned so well, the sauce and feta really brings it together. The people inside are so friendly and charismatic, they bring a terrific and pleasant vibe to the place! Definitely see myself coming here often! I love good shawarma, not as much as falafel, but good Middle Eastern food is a true pleasure. I will drive an hour up to San Jose for the good stuff. That's why I was so hopeful when I heard about Shawarma King. Yeah, it's in a gas station. Yeah, there is no seating. However it's not about the ambiance , it's about the food, and the food is made to order. And it's made by a crew that knows and loves the cuisine, you can tell. All those things are true. The other truth is that the food could taste better. It's nice that they grill the pita, but the hummus doesn't seem to add much flavor to the experience, the vegies are chopped and not sliced so the flavors are less distinct, and the shawarma, while good, is not exceptional. Neither is the flavor or amount of the falafel. It is not awful, and I will stop in whenever I am in the neighborhood, but I will still drive to San Jose for the good stuff. I am looking forward to trying their Samosas and Burritos and, If other dishes are better I will make sure to write another review that reflects that. For now they are just a '3'. Finally made it out here after seeing them build their kitchen a couple years ago. The wait was definitely worth it. Don't let the gas station setup fool you, this place is legit. I got the spicy beef and lamb shawarma wrap and the beef kefta plate, and closed it out with some baklava. The beef/lamb wrap was awesome, super loaded - probably too much food honestly, but great. It was more along the lines of a burrito kind of vibe, but they do also have gyros if that's what you're into. The beef kefta was amazing, the meat was super moist and the rice was delectable. The portions were super generous and everything was amazingly flavorful and fresh. All of the sauces were killer, too. The service was great too, everyone was super nice and welcoming! read more

Was graving some Mediterranean food,this place delivered. Drove from salinas and was not disappointed! It's so flavorful. The rice was amazing. Swama was great. Onion rings did not make it home. Some of my favorite restaurants are located in gas stations - don't let the location scare you off. Their food was so delicious! We're big fans of middle eastern food, and there aren't a lot of choices in this area, and non existent in the small town where we live. So we were thrilled to learn of a new option in Castroville. I tried it as soon as I could, and it did not disappoint. We ordered the beef (or is it beef and lamb?) gyro wrap, and also a chicken gyro wrap. Both were outstanding! Because we were saving them for dinner, I asked if we could have the sauce on the side, so they woudn't get soggy. They went above and beyond - not only was the sauce (tzadiki) in a separate container, he put the produce items in a separate container as well. That night, we assembled the components and it was as fresh as could be. Plus, the flavors were so good. A little different than I'm used to, but delicious!
