One of Anthony Bourdain's rules for travel is, figure out what the place you are visiting does better than anywhere else in the world, and seek out that food. For some reason I frequently find myself doing the opposite. Being from Detroit, I have easy access to some of the best shawarma in North America. Yet, here I am, at a Shawarma spot in Utah. Why? Good question. Well, first is the location. I'm a sucker for places that operate in odd or unconventional locations. Shawarma Shack is tucked away in the back of a convenience story on Main Street in downtown SLC. There is just something about a hole in the wall where food is the focus that makes me feel good. Thee Before I even got my food, I was struck by how good everything smelled. I ordered a beef shawarma sandwich and a side of hummus. Let's start with the sandwich. It comes with cucumber, lettuce, pickles along with white and hot sauce. Ignore my picture, I accidentally was served a bowl instead of the wrap. No worries, I just built my own. This ended up being a happy accident as I was able to taste each of the components individually. The beef was crispy and well seasoned, the crispy bits are my favorite part of shawarma. The white sauce was garlicky and delicious. The hot sauce was quite hot. The only negative was the wrap itself. It came in a tortilla not a pita wrap. That was a bummer. On to the hummus. Hate to say but it was very bland. This surprised me, based on the looks i thought it would be spicy. That wasn't the case. Adding some of the white sauce helped but it still wasn't that great. The bread that came with it wasn't too great either. Giving it a minute on the grill would have helped. Overall it was ok, the crispy shawarma and the white sauce were the stars of the show. I suppose if you don't have shawarma on a regular basis, this place will do the trick. That said, for me it's probably best if I stick with local shawarma.

The food is amazing! We got the chicken & combo Shawarma plates not knowing what to expect, & what an incredibly flavorful & delicious experience! The food is fresh & portions are big! You won't go hungry here! The restaurant is located at the back of the bodega. We did a pick up order, but I wish we'd chosen to eat there. The place & staff seem so kind & interesting. Next time we're around, we'll definitely eat here!

The food was good as expected. The sauces were really good as well. The place is through a convenient store so it could be hard to find. Service was fast and friendly and the ambiance of the restaurant was quiet enough as it's in the back of the convenient store so it's quiet enough to enjoy a meal.

    Street bites menu

Decided to come back to shawarma shack for lunch today and discovered their street bites menu! I tried their grilled chicken sandwich and it was phenomenal! The smokey flavor of the shack sauce pairs perfectly with the grilled chicken. Refreshing and simply delicious! I will be back for more!!

I got a combo wrap. Chicken is decent, could have had more but the beef is absolutely terrible! Not even edible.

We started with the fried cauliflower and zaatar fries, both served with an incredible dipping sauce that disappeared embarrassingly fast. The cauliflower was perfectly seasoned, crispy on the outside, tender inside, and honestly good enough to order again on its own. For my meal, I ordered the shakshuka. It arrived bubbling hot in a cast iron skillet with rich tomato sauce, flavorful meatballs, perfectly baked eggs, and warm grilled pita for scooping up every last bite. I've had shakshuka before, and this was easily one of the best versions I've tasted. Every bite was comforting, hearty, and packed with flavor. Spud went with a Laziz salad alongside another helping of the roasted cauliflower, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Everything that came to the table looked thoughtfully prepared, fresh, and beautifully presented. What made the experience truly memorable, though, was our waitress, Omri. As a Deaf customer, it's always a pleasant surprise when someone can communicate directly in sign language. Omri signed with us, made us feel genuinely welcome, and provided exceptional service from beginning to end. That personal connection meant a great deal to me, and it absolutely elevated an already wonderful meal. I was so impressed that I happily double-tipped her. Great food, warm hospitality, and an experience my son and I will both remember. We'll definitely be back.

This spot was right around the corner from where my coworker and I had been, so it worked out perfectly. It's a sit-down restaurant, not order at the counter but it all works out. We tried their dip trio, one with hummus, one beets, and the showstopper, Muhammara which consists of roasted red pepper, pomegranate molasses, onions, garlic, and walnuts. I could subsist on this and this alone. For my entree I ended up with the Mediterranean platter (hummus, basmati rice, tabbouleh salad, vegetables, chicken, and pita) that was very tasty. I do wish I had tried their fried cauliflower after talking to some locals, but the chicken was good as well. Good service, nice atmosphere, and simply a great spot. Jealous that I'm not from here or I'd go often!

I ordered the lamb pita wrap and watched them grill the meat over wood-fired coals. It was fresh, flavorful, and delicious. If you're a big eater, order an extra skewer and have them add it to the wrap. We also started with the Labneh with garlic, which was a fantastic - it's fresh and vibrant. All of the breads are made in-house in their tandoor-style oven, and the pita served alongside it was warm, fresh and spectacular. The ordering process is simple - order at the counter, take a number, find a seat, and pick up your food when your number is called. The staff was clearly busy, but when I asked a few questions about the business, they were more than happy to stop and chat. I complimented them on both their operation and the food. They seemed genuinely appreciative. I think places like this are special because they are a well run kitchen with people who care about what they're doing. And in return it comes out in their product - really good food. The ovens and cooking area are customer facing, and everything is made to order right in front of you. The interior has the feel of a one time American diner with floor tiles that match the chairs. But make no mistakes about it, this is far from that. And when I was sitting there watching the person grill skewers over the wood coals, I was thinking that this restaurants kitchen was being run like I was sitting in an open-air café in Beirut. Authenticity is on full display here and it's appreciated.
