Small, simple menu of the classic favorites. They have a lamb shank/chicken entrees section as well as some kebab plates. No alcohol unfortunately:/ We got a couple lamb shank dishes - the Kabuli Palow (national dish) and lamb shank mughali. The flavor of these were almost identical, both were cooked w/ eggplants in a tomatoey stew. The only difference is the Kabuli Palow had some raisins&carrots mixed in w/ the rice and came w/ a small side cucumber salad. The lamb meat itself was fall of the bone tender. The rice was a tad too wet & bland, & I wish the the meat for that matter had a little more flavor as well. However the sauces provided & side of garlic naan we ordered helped greatly to spice up the dishes - I particularly enjoyed the Mexican style habanero salsa (quite hot!) & the Indian style green chutney. Oh this is definitely a new fav of mine in SLC. SO SO SO GOOD. The staff is kind and the service felt fast. We ordered two mango yogurts which were sooo good and taste just like mango lassi to me. We got the dinner for 2 meal and garlic naan. We first got served the mantu and variety of sauces. The mantu is to yum and love the lentils with it too. Great sauce. The dinner for 2 comes with a variety of things: rice, biryani, eggplant, beef kebab, chicken, and salad. Every part of the meal was so so so good. There wasn't one thing we didn't like. We were in the mood for something different. We searched the Internet, looking for a highly rated restaurant. This one came up as one of the best. One of my favorite restaurants in SLC. I made a review at the other location so please refer to that one for additional details. This location is the original location so there's less seating but still plenty of parking. Food is phenomenal regardless of the location. The family style dishes are highly recommended if it is your first time so you can try a sampling of different dishes. I shared the two person meat one and it was more than enough food with chicken, ground beef, eggplant, cucumber and tomato, two types of rice and beef mantu or dumplings. There can be a wait if they are busy but overall service is fast and friendly. Definitely one of the most unique restaurants in SLC. read more

I guess I need to clarify my review, since the business owner does not agree that ok food and ok service deserves 3 stars. We love small businesses and frequent them as much as possible. But I will always be honest, while also giving the benefit of the doubt. We did not have a bad experience, but we also did not have a good one. The darkness of the restaurant factored into my review, as it's part of the experience, but this place still deserves a 3 star rating without taking that into consideration. In fact, I was so sad about giving a lower rating to a local place, that we went to the other Afghan kitchen again to make sure I was being fair. I was. The flavors are more bland and not as pronounced. Everything we had was just ok. Not great, but not bad. I'm still glad we came. I know others love this place and it's worth trying out. And as for service, it was also just ok. We had our order taken and were served our food and that's it. I don't expect anything more, but I can't rate service as 5 stars when it simply meets basic expectations. To be transparent, I'm comparing the service to places like Thai in Town, Kafe Mamai, Safron Valley, etc... And if we're being thorough, we can also consider the owners response here as a reflection of the service. I was blamed for hurting small business and invited to not come back, instead of encouraged to come back to try again or being told that they have confidence my experience isn't typical and would be better on a different day. That's fine. There are plenty of amazing places to eat in SLC! And there are plenty of other people who love this place, so maybe you will too. As I said, it's worth trying. My boyfriend and I brought my parents here for dinner because my boyfriend and I love Afghan Kitchen so much, and my parents loved it! Every time we come here, the warm, welcoming smell of delicious food envelops us the moment we walk in. Minar, the server, is always the most wonderful person: she's friendly, upbeat, and amazing in every aspect! The food is the best we've had! They put some kind of flavor-filled seasoning on many of their food items (it almost looks like paprika, but it's more flavorful and tastier). The seasoning is so good, my boyfriend will make sure every grain is consumed by scraping it up with garlic naan from our plates! We were also able to try their rose water ice cream, which I do not know if they have on their menu consistently. It was some of the best ice cream I've ever had! It had a distinct rose flavor, but it was so mellow in a good way. Topped with crushed pistachios (as you can see in the picture), I would legitimately be able to eat an entire gallon of this by myself! Their pudding, Firni, is also the best pudding I've had! The flavor is mellow, but you can taste cardamom in it, giving it an extra unique flavor that makes your taste buds crave more! They also put crushed pistachios on top, which adds a delightful texture! I would want to order this, and I would take this to parties because it's such a delicious flavor that everyone needs to try! Everything is house-made--their sauces, their naan, their dessert... everything! And I feel like family when I dine here! I am blown away by the quality of Afghan Kitchen on Main Street! read more

This was my first experience trying Afghan cuisine, and it was a great introduction. Unsure of what to order, I went for the "My Meating" family-style meal, which serves two. It includes five ground beef dumplings (delicious), chicken qabuli palow (it reminded me of chicken soup in rice form, and with raisins), one beef kabob skewer, one chicken kabob skewer, burani banjan (a tangy, creamy green eggplant dish), salata (this was like a salsa with cucumber for me), and white rice. If you enjoy Mediterranean food, you'll definitely love what they have to offer here. Every bite was packed with flavor, and there wasn't a single dish I didn't enjoy.
