What a great experience!! The atmosphere is fun and up beat.... My server was on the money.... And the food?... ohhh the food is GREAT!! I order a small buffet as I was starving. An order fish and chips, Reuben sandwich plate, French onion soup, fried mushroom appetizer. Everything was spot on! If I had to pick one thing the fries needed another minute to be crispy. I found a whole crumpled up ball of wax paper on both sandwiches I ordered. Terrible to pay $50 for two sandwiches, I think they should come safe and sanitary. Food and service are fine, but this is yet another credit card surcharge business I will steer clear of in the future. Why? Because such places pass along the credit card charges because they can, NOT because it reflects an honest comparison between credit card and cash costs. Plenty of great places around that don't insult the majority of customers by doing this, and virtually no fast food places do this. Try calling them and asking if they will deduct 5% since you aren't using their sit down dining facilities that likely costs them 5% of their revenues. read more

We grabbed lunch with a group of 8 before a show at the Stranahan. The food was fine, though at least one entree came out cold in the middle. (No server visit to check in or ask for a replacement until most of us were finished eating). We were there for 90 minutes, it took a long time for food to come out. Because we were on our way to a show, we asked for the checks as soon as the food came out. We got them, but we didn't see our server again for quite a while. We might go back, but not with any time sensitivity. read more

Had a bad experience tonight at this Tavern. Wife ordered corn beef sandwich and fries were cold and the sandwich was constructed poorly. Sauerkraut on one side, corned beef on the other side. I ordered the hand breaded yellow perch. Far from hand breaded, had it several years ago and was delicious. This came from a freezer and was over cooked. Vegetable of the day was atrocious. Excellent service and drink pricing was very fair, would have to think seriously about going back. read more

I have to agree 100% with Hannah P.'s review of Shawn's in Waterville. I almost feel like I should just copy her response and use it as my own, because I lived her experience. My friend and I came to Shawn's because we were in the area and we love Shawn's on Bancroft as well, so why wouldn't it be just as great here? First the positives: It was clean, the server was friendly and the Bread Pudding is still the freaking bomb! Sadly the rest is not so good. It took our friendly server at least 10 minutes to make their way over to the table to get our drink order- it was within an hour and half till closing and the place was not busy, not sure why it took 10 minutes to acknowledge us and take drink order. The server never came to refill us on their own, we had to hunt them down or wait until they returned to the table. We ordered Mushrooms for appetizers. When they came out 20 minutes later- they were lukewarm and incredibly over fried, you could tell by their appearance. I am not sure what the breading was on these mushrooms, but neither of us were fans and lukewarm fried mushrooms are gross. Both of us were disappointed- we have now invested 40 minutes into being here and we knew we were not in our regular Shawn's environment. Our food finally came out probably another 20+ minutes after we got our appetizer- which if we had ordered big dinners might have been ok, but my friend ordered a chicken wrap with tots and I ordered the chicken bacon ciabatta with onion rings. (BTW this was the moment you had to ask for a refill, because otherwise you might not get anymore because you wouldn't see the server again until after the meal, so it was probably a good thing we asked) My friend swapped out the ranch dressing that was supposed to come with her wrap for Ceaser dresssing- they upcharged her an additional .80. Not a huge deal, but it was never mentioned there would be an additional charge for swapping. My friend said her wrap and tots were good. But I was sadly disappointed in my Ciabatta and rings. My Ciabatta was clearly sitting under a heat lamp for awhile or something because one side of my Ciabatta was rock hard and the other side was fresh and soft. The ingredients in it were plentiful and tasty but the bread itself ruined the sandwich. Now can we just talk for a minute about the $2+ extra for the onion rings instead of the chips? I gladly paid the extra because I was going to share some of them with my friend and we love Shawn's onion rings- but I was not prepared for 5 onions rings. Tho be it they were delicious- really 5 onion rings? I struggled to share with my friend there were so little, she's lucky I like her. We now come to the end of our meal and both my friend and I ordered the famous bread pudding bites. I swear these need to be sold in multiple restaurants all over the city- they are absolutely amazing. Fried beautifully on the outside, hot and gooey on the inside and the drizzle over the top and soaking at the bottom is heavenly. When I finished eating, I deeply regretted my mushrooms and Ciabatta - but couldn't walk away totally disappointed with Waterville Shawn's, because they did get the bread pudding right. Update: In all fairness I did not address the issues with the server or staff- therefor they were not able to correct the wrong. I appreciate the manager commenting and I will always address the issues before posting, it's the right thing to do. read more

Mixed here; Pizza is so good, ribs great. Baked potato, how can that be messed up? Chewy skin, barely warm inside. French fries, a teenage boy tasted one and left them (if you never had or were a teenage boy, this DOESN'T happen). Food was all warm....sort of. Ordered a side salad, got mashed potatoes and gravy, with no apology or offer to make it right. The high point is cold beer. Also took over one hour before food came out. So we got there early and hoped for the best. I order the French dip. How can the kitchen send out the sandwich without the dip? Numerous times the waitress came to the table and could not get the kitchen to produce the dip. Ended up just taking my almost the entire sandwich home and making my own dip. I've been a Shawn's Waterville customer for years. I understand we're talking bar food at best, and usually it's very good. Tonight was the exception. The service was fantastic and the beer was cold, the fish fry was served hot...everything pointed to a nice meal. That was until we tried the fish. It was nicely breaded but it absolutely was cross contaminated with the French fries and whatever else Shawn's fries. Or worse it was day or days old oil. Total disappointment. There's no mistaking reused deep frying oil. We get higher prices in every aspect of our economy and we'd rather pay more for a freshly deep fried meal than be served tonight's meal. Again, we reiterate this was reused deep frying oil. Yuck. We'll be back at some point, but not anytime soon. Hate to say it, but in the meantime Shawn's can serve and re-serve used oil entrees and most of their customers won't even know the difference. Maybe it's a tried and true practice...but it's disgusting. Please do better. We have so limited choices in this area. read more

I don't know about the others, but this is a go to place. The waitresses and staff are GREAT! The food is really, really good and our service has always been fast. The place seemed very clean and followed all the COV 19 rules. The sever was very friendly and fast I don't think I ever had to even ask for a drink refill. I ordered the Greek chunks and hand cut fries they where ok it was good but wasn't what I thought they was going to be next time I will try the shepherd pie because they are a Irish pub. We stopped coming here several years ago after a couple really bad experiences involving both the food and the wait staff. However, tonight everyplace else was crazy so decide to try again (rather than cooking). WOW! WTG, Shawn's! Really upped your game, even with a cooks wanted sign out front!! You are only a stranger once. The staff and the owner are a highly committed bunch who treat guests like family, and not just any family but the ones that they like! The food is good and the service is great. Seasonal taps are consistently changing so you can always try something new or maybe a favorite will come back. We have been there many time and it is alway the same. Food is decent, but they just are not friendly or attentive. The bartenders go out of their way to avoid eye contact. This goes back to pre-pandemic days. I think it's a culture thing.... I want to love it there but I have a hard time going because I know EXACTLY what it will be, ok food and mediocre service. I came here with my family hoping to get the same excellent service as the Shawn's on Bancroft but we were disappointed. The service was so slow that I had go and find the waitress to get refills because we hadn't been checked on in over 15 minutes. When we finally got our food, it was just barely warm and then had to wait another 10 minutes to be asked if we needed condiments, or any extras. The food, although not hot, was decent.
