I was unhappy with my haircut at first - it's hard to see what it looks like when leaving bc they don't style it but after washing styling at home it looks ok. ORIGINAL: The team was super sweet and the stylist seemed to be precise but my hair is thick asian hair that is frizzy so it's hard to cut. I requested 2 inches off with some layering. It's looking like it's kind of chunky and slightly uneven. It's a $45 cut so you get what you pay for I guess. Maybe if you have straight, smooth hair it'll be fine - my friend loves them. But if you've got thick hair, I would not recommend. Just a headsup - it's a pretty basic place so for a hair cut, they don't shampoo/blowdry/style after - she just sprays your hair down. read more

Horrible experience for women's haircut... Came in and asked for no shampoo, but they said I needed to wet my hair as she prefers to cut wet hair. The husband went ahead and shampooed anyways, but whatever it's fine. I showed her a picture of what I wanted and the result came out NOTHING like it. The length was too short and the layers blunt. She insisted that I agreed to that length and even suggested if I want to leave one side unlayered so it appears longer... Pricing was $30 for the worst haircut I've ever had. read more

Shear Image is a small and successful hair salon that has been in the Richmond district for many years. It's great for a quick, efficient haircut. The couple-duo who run the joint are super friendly, and there are no frills here whatsoever. You're greeted, they offer you a beverage, tea or water before your cut, wash your hair, cut it and boom you're out of there. I would recommend calling ahead of time instead of being a walk-in. I went in recently looking to get a 1-2 inch trim. After my hair wash, the gentleman noticed I had a lot of dead hair at my ends. He insisted we cut it all off. I wasn't planning on cutting it so short but the lady was like it's all dead, you should cut. I agreed. It's now healthy again. Trust them. They have been cutting and looking at hair for years!! I was looking for a no frills affordable place to get a quick haircut and came across this place on yelp with its high reviews. I made an appointment the same day and they accommodated me quickly. This is a literal hole in the wall. The shop is really small and probably narrow enough to get 2 people through. There's only a married couple that works here. The husband does the hair washing and the wife does the cutting. Both of them were super friendly. I told them what I wanted and they executed it perfectly. I wanted to cut out the highlighted tips of my hair and keep the same shape. It's a little shorter than I do normally and I've had other hairdressers make it look horrible which is why I keep my hair long, but honestly the shape that I got is actually amazing and super flattering. I'm actually liking my shorter hair. It's $30 for wash and cut only. I did have to pay extra for them to blow dry my hair at the end and style it a little, which I've never had to pay extra before, but I'm willing to support this mom and pop shop! read more

Focus of discussion is on what the customer wants--if you can bring in a picture of your hair how you want it to look, that's exactly what you will get, with a lot of careful attention to achieve perfection. I've been going here ever since I moved to San Francisco. 7 years. Pauline and Andy are the sole proprietors of this spot and the only employees. Andy washes hair and tidied up around the shop while Pauline cuts and styles. Andy will also help out on blow drying and dye jobs. As I've only done cuts here, I can't review coloring. Bonus, Pauline also does eyebrow and other facial waxing (for affordable rates)! I love Pauline -- she's like an auntie who might scold you if you go to another stylist and come back to her (because they did it wrong and messed up your cut ). But she does a great job on the cut every single time! Also affordable prices in San Francisco --hell even other parts of the Bay for the quality of work. Just note, blow drying is not generally included in the service (especially if you're a first timer). However if you're a long time customer, you can get it since they know you -- and I've asked especially if it's cold outside and don't want to walk around with wet hair. A great neighborhood spot! Absolutely the best. I tried a few places after I came to the city, and finally settled on this place. Its very close to my place and the couple who run this place are the cutest and nicest people I have seen. The prices are very low, compared to most places in SF. She is a very good barber and does a much better job with my hair every time than other more pricey ($100) places I have been to before. She has a list of example men's cut pictures. A very affordable haircut and color for San Francisco! Don't be put off by the look of the space, the couple that runs this salon have been doing this for years. I was a little nervous about how much private conversation there was between the two prior to dying my hair (she did check in with me to provide advice and perspective before proceeding), but the results were exactly what I wanted. They were able to match my natural color almost spot-on, and threw in a quick trim at the end as well. I came in for a woman's cut and wash. But I got charged $35 and I had short hair (shoulder length). Do they discriminate with who they want to charge more from? It's a cute mom & pop shop -- the hubby washes hair, sweeps, and does what he can to help out, while the wifey does the cuts. I have absolutely no complaints. She has always respected my 1-2 inch trim limit and she is always done in ~10 minutes. Moreover, she doesn't brag about herself or rag on the person who previously cut your hair (as other stylists sometimes do). I've never tried anything trendy or too complicated with her (so I can't say with certainty whether she'd be able to do it)... I'm a fan of no frill places like Shear Images that gets the job done without the attitude or the eye blurring $$$. For $15 bucks I get my long hair cut for under 30 minutes (including wait time) that will not have people asking if I'm still letting my mom cut my hair (sorry mom, but that bowl cut was traumatic). I like to think I've run the gamut of hair cutting establishments from 3 hour cuts at Vidal Sassoon's teaching school to overpriced hipster salons on Melrose to sassy Korean saloons in LA's Ktown, and to be honest my hair always comes out looking the DAMN SAME. It's just what happens when you have long asian hair and you ask for "layers in the front, some volume on top and a V in the back." If you have similar vanilla requests, save yourself some time and money and just come here, where the cut isn't going to rock your world, but will definitely leave you satisfied. One star. I didn't want to believe it either. I've been here 3 times. The first time was fantastic. I wanted to chop off my hair and Pauline gave me the cutest bob ever. It was perfect! However, I came back in for a trim a few months later and Pauline went crazy with the texturizing scissors. I was not a happy camper. My hair looked choppy and butchered. It was close to closing time too and I felt rushed. She didn't listen to what I want and didn't even take the time to brush all the hair off of me. But I figured it was a fluke because of all the good reviews on here so I went back again. This time I asked her to take off an inch. I just wanted to cut off the dead ends. Wow, it was a disaster. tl;dr: Possibly the worst haircut of my life. Hair was uneven and looked absolutely ridiculous, random parts sticking out in weird places. Refused to wash out my hairwax before the cut, which is just nasty. Avoid at all costs. I came here for the first time around 6pm after work, with hair wax in my hair from that morning. I have very thick hair, so I use a lot of wax, which makes my hair sticky. I had also been sweating that day. The lady owner cut my hair. I asked her to wash my hair before the cut, and she refused. I asked again, and she refused again. That is absolutely disgusting, and I should have left at that moment. But I was going on vacation the next day and needed a cut badly, and my usual place was booked, so I stayed. Biggest mistake of my life. I showed her a photo of the cut I wanted, and asked for a few adjustments (e.g. shorter here, low fade here, etc.) I specifically asked to keep the fade low on the sides because shaving it too high looks weird due to the shape of my head. Needless to say, the haircut looked nothing like the photo and the fade was ridiculously high, which made my head look very strange. Although the cut was totally different (much worse) than what I had expected, I thought at least the hair is even on all sides. I wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible, and didn't trust her with cutting my hair anymore, so I said thanks and left. After I got home and washed my hair, I saw what a disaster this haircut truly was. The wax and oil had kept my hair in place, which is the only reason it looked somewhat even. Random parts of my hair were ridiculously short, right next to parts that were several inches longer but shouldn't have been. It's hard to describe in words, but basically, parts of my hair were way too long and sticking out where they shouldn't be, and way too short where they shouldn't be. It was like she had cut my hair with her eyes closed. I was furious (still am, 3 weeks later). For the next 3 weeks, I've used an ungodly amount of hair wax and hairspray (I normally NEVER use hairspray) just to make it look somewhat normal, but it still doesn't work. My vacation photos are ruined by random bulks of hair sticking out on the sides of my head. I would have gone to get a haircut somewhere else, but I had no time during vacation. Also, there were parts of my hair that I've been trying to grow out for months - she cut those short, and I wasn't ready to cut them even shorter since I still wanted to grow them out. During my vacation, at least 5 people that I'd seen for the first time in years commented on how terrible my haircut was. What an embarrassment. I thought that it might fix itself as it grew out. Boy, was I wrong. I can say with confidence that this is one of the top 3 worst haircuts I've received in my life (quite possibly #1). Today, I'm finally getting a haircut at my usual place and I can't wait to undo this disaster of a haircut. I hope to get rid of this awful memory completely. read more

So I've claimed I found my "holy grail" hair guy, so reviewing this place makes me feel like I'm cheating on my once a quarter lover, but I can't look at myself in the mirror without thinking, wow! What a great job she did! The lady is Vietnamese and halfway thru, we started speaking to each other in Vietnamese. She's super nice! She's also super talented. I didn't know this as she cut my hair dry. She first talked to me in length about how I wanted my hair, checked out the picture I had, and consulted me with length and even the shape! (she also told me my last cut was pretty much subpar and left the bottom too thin (WHAT?!).) But, as she began chopping and angling her scissors, I couldn't help bit wonder if she even knew what she was doing! She was flattening it out against my back and holding the scissors all weird -- I actually got to a point where I got a little nervous that I was going to end up with a mullet!
