We all know how much finding a new stylist stinks - but after doing a walk-by then some exploring on the internet I found the Sixth Avenue Salon. You can read stylists profiles online and make your choice. I would recommend making your appt via phone rather than internet. In the end I choose Sarah - really nice, did a great job on my hair. I had a glaze done and a trim - it was a little over 100 dollars. No credit cards -cash or check only (I think this varies by stylist). I will be back to see her - I felt she took the time to listen to my past hair experiences - and helped me decide what to do this go round. The salon is clean, cute, and they also offer manicures, pedicures and massage treatments! Looking forward to my next appt! UPDATE - Went back for my 2nd visit & it's official I love this place! Sarah definitely deserves 5 stars! I first went to her after two really awful colorings at other salons. Her first shot at fixing the problem was not entirely successful. However, I went back the following day and she devoted her entire Friday evening to blending the several different colors on my head (at no charge, and she heartily refused a tip). Sarah is very down to earth and does a good job of leaving you feeling like you when you leave, not like some bizarre, glammed out version of yourself. She's also a great conversationalist. I've been getting my hair cut and highlighted by Sarah for the last two and a half years. She's a great stylist and really listens to what you want. This salon is the place to go to for an attitude-free experience. It's sunny and comfy but not fancy. Definitely a plus for me since I like down-to-earth everything. I really don't treat my hair well (cheap shampoo, no hair drying, irregular haircut and highlight schedule) and I rely on Sarah to remedy all the neglect and get me back into shape every couple of months. She's always fun to talk to and never makes me feel guilty for not coming in regularly. I don't know what the other review was talking about with regard to "stripey" highlights. My hair is super straight and flat so you can see every single color that's put into it, but Sarah has never given me the stripey look. I've had many, many salon experiences to overcome my flat, mousy-brown hair, but I keep coming back to Sixth Avenue Salon. If you want a princess experience with glitz and glamour, it's probably not the best choice (and if you want that, you probably shouldn't be looking to find it in the Inner Richmond!). But if you want a great cut/color at a reasonable price in a friendly atmosphere, then you should check them out. read more

I've been going to Sixth Avenue since it was in its old location across the street. I think it's almost nine years now! I get lots of compliments on my hair color, which Ivy (my stylist and the owner) has helped me change through the years. She also cuts hair with precision! This means you can go home and do almost nothing to your hair and it still looks nice. She doesn't have cheap prices, but they're reasonable, and she uses high quality natural products. Her salon is always clean, so you feel like the instruments they use on you are sanitary. I see Ivy every three to four weeks religiously. She is the first person I see when I return home from a long trip...sometimes before my husband gets to see me. Ivy knows my true color, and knows what I really look like, but she keeps my age mysterious with her excellent cuts and colors. If you want a super trendy salon and pay through the nose, then this is not for you. If you want a stylist you can count on year after year, and know that everytime you leave the salon, you look perfect...then this is your place. read more

I came to Sixth Avenue Salon for the first time this past week. I had been going to another salon in SF for haircuts, but when I decided I wanted to start getting my hair colored, I wanted to find a reputable place to make my new go-to. After reading all the reviews, I decided to give this place a try. I came in on Tuesday morning at 10:30 and got a cut and partial highlight from Ivy. It was very quiet-- only one other client was in when I came, and there were two others when I left. I felt like she really listened to me and heard what I was trying to say on my vision for my hair, but she also gave her professional input and gave some good suggestions that I took. I brought a few pictures of what my hair used to look like so she could get an idea of how my hair has looked in the past. She was a little bit rough during the wash and some of the highlighting, but it would probably only bother someone if they were pretty sensitive. The whole process took less than two hours. I really liked the result and I'm happy with it a few days later. Ivy gave me good suggestions on how often I need to come in to maintain the shape and color of my hair, which was good because I expressed that I'm pretty low-maintenance. I was a little bit sticker-shocked at the price, but I guess it was pretty comparable to the salons in the city. I'll be coming to see Ivy from now on! read more

I received a cut and highlights from Sarah. After reading these reviews on Yelp, I decided to go with her because she sounded like the best. I was deeply disappointed. I have no natural warm tone in my hair, and my highlights turned out looking like I was going gray, even after I explained that I wanted a natural look. (I'm 19 years old.. I don't want to look like I'm graying early!) it turned out looking stripey (NOT NATURAL LOOKING) and the cut was mediocre I would say. It certainly isn't bad, but it gets a B- because it lacks all style and sense of flavor. I'm used to going to higher-end salons for my cut and color. To me, this place seems overpriced for the quality of work you get. I'm honestly going to go back to spending $400 for a cut and color because I know my stylist will do it RIGHT. At Sixth Avenue, you get less than what you pay for. Although it is the only place in the Richmond that isn't Chinese-speaking only. read more

I did a little research before going to this salon. I even had a manicure/pedicure before I had my hair cut because I wanted to scope it out. By the way, the mani/pedi was good, lasted forever and they have great funky colors. All the stylists seemed good, but I decided to go with Ivy, the owner of the salon. She's had over 20 years of haircutting experience. Ivy was very attentive and took into consideration all of my concerns: hair texture, face shape, low maintenance, no Jennifer Aniston early Friends days layers. This is a review for Sarah. She is an artist! I started going to her because she doe's my mother-in-laws hair which is always a perfect combination of pixie, sophisticated, and warm. I usually have long layers and a side part but was open to anything. She is a great listener and really takes her time to make each cut beautiful. After last Friday's cut I felt sexy and lighter. I get my hair done by Barbara and have for the past two decades. If it seems that I don't like change, not so....it is that I like to stick with what works for me and at the path of least resistance. Barbara makes it easy! The best part is Barbara is hip and up-to-date on what the latest styles are. She has a very dedicated following: clients who have followed her from other salons over the years. Anyway, I am only responsible for getting in the chair on time (sometimes I don't even do that all right) and she does the rest. She does my color and my cuts and will update me so I don't look like I am some 1980's left-over. I know this is working because I do get lots of compliments on my 'do, even when I do not "do" anything...now that's a great cut! AND the other best part is Barbara knows that I love gossip rags, so she makes sure the latest People magazine is waiting for me. Talk about customer service! Sarah cut my hair and she did an amazing job. I have long hair down to my mid-back, so I'm always worried that the stylist will cut off too much. But Sarah cut off exactly the amount I asked her to. I asked her to trim off all the split ends, and to create a few long layers in the front to frame my face. She explained what she was doing every step of the way. She even warned me that larger pieces of hair would fall down when she cut the layers, and told me not to be scared that she'd cut too much off. She was also a great conversationalist. She didn't talk my ear off like most stylists do. She kept the conversation going and was really friendly and so much fun to talk to. My hair looks great now, and I love the layers she put in. I came to Sixth Avenue salon to color and cut my hair. My hairdresser was Kathy Stein (when you get in the first one on your right). I have a pretty long brown hair so I asked her to renew color and cut my ends. First of all she did two clients at the same time-me and another woman so it made me go back and forth from my chair. Second, when she completed coloring my hair and started drying it I realized that bottom part of my hair is different color from my upper part. That was such a horrible feeling....I couldn't believe the she did it to me..then she (without any apology) told me that she is gonna fix it very fast-so she put more cream on my bottom part and in 10 minutes washed it out..OMG..when she dried it again I saw that my ends became darker this time than the rest of the hair..that is ridiculous!!!! Guess what she charged me the full amount of money with no apologies or simple "sorry" which was very rude. The only thing that she said: Don't worry you wash it couple of times and its gonna be fine or if not come back again..I paid money for the service not to hear this kind of recommendation.That is the worst hairdressing experience I ever had in my life.In addition to that when I came home I looked at the mirror again and realized that she cut my hair crooked..I hardy doubt her professional skills after what she has done to me!
