I like this place a lot. I don't get many haircuts but when i do, i rarely ever stick to the same place. BUT i think i'll stick around here. I arrived around 630pm on a monday without an appointment and was served right away. The place is quaint and looks like only a man and woman work there. I only wanted a trim which was to cost $15 but they convinced me to get a shampoo as well so it ended up being $20 --which isn't bad at all considering I have long, thick hair that is hard to deal with. The man shampooed my hair and he was very attentive. Anytime i flinched or made a face, he was very considerate and asked what was wrong. He might not understand that cold water is uncomfortable for me but he was very sweet in fixing it. What I really enjoyed about this place is that there was no bullshit talking involved. The woman was straight business and I liked that. If you're looking for a lot of chit chat with your hair stylist, maybe this isn't the place for you. Apart from asking me what i wanted, we really didn't talk-- which is totally what i prefer! If i could sleep during my haircuts, I would. I was also very pleased with how she didn't just do whatever with my hair. I told her that I trusted her to just trim and layer my hair. She seemed really hesitant and first trimmed my hair with very little layers, and then asked me if i wanted more. I liked that. I really didn't want to give this place such few stars because the people who run this place are a nice, hard-working, immigrant Vietnamese couple who embody everything good about mom-and-pop shops. I just happen to have a bad experience yesterday, so I'll try to write this as advice to others who are thinking of coming here. My hair was getting really long - I hadn't cut it in a year and a half - so I wanted a simple trim, with a little bit of layers. I asked the lady to cut it 4 inches. Instead, she cut off 7-8 inches. Now, granted, my haircut looks just fine, but I was still a bit miffed because preserving the length was my main criteria - and she totally disregarded that. She also finished my haircut in about 10 minutes, which seemed really fast! Is that normal for a trim with layers?? I wouldn't know because I haven't been to one of these everyday Asian salons in years, so I don't have a gauge. But even so, it seemed a bit too fast. And she did seem kinda rushed; another customer came in while I was getting my hair cut, and when her husband said to come back in 10 minutes, she was like, "come back in 7 minutes" - and there was still another teenage boy seated and waiting after me at the time! So, my advice to you if you come here is to be VERY, very firm about what you want. Perhaps you should even remind her, every couple minutes, of your length, and inquire every so often about if it's still that length. It might seem annoying to the person cutting your hair, but might be worth it so you can get what you want. The price is $18 for a women's haircut. With tip, it'll be $21. Note that this does not include a shampoo or blow dry; they charge extra for that. read more

tl;dr: Possibly the worst haircut of my life. Hair was uneven and looked absolutely ridiculous, random parts sticking out in weird places. Refused to wash out my hairwax before the cut, which is just nasty. Avoid at all costs. I came here for the first time around 6pm after work, with hair wax in my hair from that morning. I have very thick hair, so I use a lot of wax, which makes my hair sticky. I had also been sweating that day. The lady owner cut my hair. I asked her to wash my hair before the cut, and she refused. I asked again, and she refused again. That is absolutely disgusting, and I should have left at that moment. But I was going on vacation the next day and needed a cut badly, and my usual place was booked, so I stayed. Biggest mistake of my life. I showed her a photo of the cut I wanted, and asked for a few adjustments (e.g. shorter here, low fade here, etc.) I specifically asked to keep the fade low on the sides because shaving it too high looks weird due to the shape of my head. Needless to say, the haircut looked nothing like the photo and the fade was ridiculously high, which made my head look very strange. Although the cut was totally different (much worse) than what I had expected, I thought at least the hair is even on all sides. I wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible, and didn't trust her with cutting my hair anymore, so I said thanks and left. After I got home and washed my hair, I saw what a disaster this haircut truly was. The wax and oil had kept my hair in place, which is the only reason it looked somewhat even. Random parts of my hair were ridiculously short, right next to parts that were several inches longer but shouldn't have been. It's hard to describe in words, but basically, parts of my hair were way too long and sticking out where they shouldn't be, and way too short where they shouldn't be. It was like she had cut my hair with her eyes closed. I was furious (still am, 3 weeks later). For the next 3 weeks, I've used an ungodly amount of hair wax and hairspray (I normally NEVER use hairspray) just to make it look somewhat normal, but it still doesn't work. My vacation photos are ruined by random bulks of hair sticking out on the sides of my head. I would have gone to get a haircut somewhere else, but I had no time during vacation. Also, there were parts of my hair that I've been trying to grow out for months - she cut those short, and I wasn't ready to cut them even shorter since I still wanted to grow them out. During my vacation, at least 5 people that I'd seen for the first time in years commented on how terrible my haircut was. What an embarrassment. I thought that it might fix itself as it grew out. Boy, was I wrong. I can say with confidence that this is one of the top 3 worst haircuts I've received in my life (quite possibly #1). Today, I'm finally getting a haircut at my usual place and I can't wait to undo this disaster of a haircut. I hope to get rid of this awful memory completely. read more

They woman who does the eyebrow waxing does an amazing job. It was cheap but she took her time to make sure my eyebrows came out perfect. The reason I'm giving it a three is because of the bad nail job. A different woman did my nails and she was very stand-offish. That doesn't bother me as long as the job gets done. She takes for freakin ever to do my acrylics and makes me bleed a little. The final result was bad. The nails looks too small for my hands, she didn't properly remove my previous nail polish so you can still see it around the edges. Worst part was she charged my $30 and expected tip. This is not my usual place, but it is literally the closest salon to my house, and it did not let me down. This is one of my favorite finds of the Inner Richmond. For a low price of 20$ ( I have long hair) I leave the salon knowing I have a great cut. It's run by a cute couple, and the wife (who cuts your hair) really took time on my long hair and I was not at all rushed. I remember reading a review on Yelp where someone stated that you'll be especially happy with your cut once you've washed it. I just want to say this is 100% true, while I leave the salon happy with my haircut I'm especially happy when I go home and take a shower and let it dry as I usually do and it still looks good! Plus! I came into this place on a Saturday around 12:45pm without making an appointment, and although there was a 1pm appointment scheduled for another customer, she still managed to squeeze me in! Highly appreciated because their next open slot was at 6pm the same day. So little tip - make an appointment just to save yourself! I was very happy with my cut. She was so thorough and didn't rush it at all even though her 1pm showed up when she was still doing my hair. My hair is fairly easy to trim, as it's very fine and all one length. I used to go regularly to the Aveda Cinta Training salon, but somehow stumbled upon this gem about two years ago. The husband and wife team are very sweet. The wife cuts my hair, and the husband does work around the salon, too (cleans up hair, etc.). He always offers me a cup of tea or water when I arrive, and they are really a friendly, sweet couple, who I want to continue to support. I have been waiting for this place to re-open "post" Covid, and even though I live in the East Bay now, I will still make trips over the bridge to get my haircut here. The prices are a little higher than where I used to go, but they are reasonable and I always LOVE my cut. It lasts and maintains its shape because she does it right! I recommend this place highly. If you're looking for excellent service and a great trim at an affordable price, you've found it! For a small studio that's staffed with only two people, they expedite the haircut process flawlessly. When I arrived early for my 5 pm appointment and the hairdresser was still working with another client, her counterpart promptly washed my hair at the shampoo station and provided me with plenty of magazines after while I waited. When I showered her a picture of what I wanted (a trim, reverting back to my short layers and full bangs), she told me with complete honesty that she was a little uncomfortable with my request. Don't know if a $30 haircut can still be categorized as cheap in my book (I'm really cheap!). Especially if that haircut didn't include a full dry, styling, or any styling creams/lotions/potions. What it did include was a hair wash (with some nice light head massaging), a mediocre haircut, and half blowdry. Let me elaborate on the mediocre haircut. My hair is now somewhat unevenly layered with some random shorter pieces that are really chunky while another section of my head barely has any shorter pieces. This is my second time at this salon and my hair came out decently the first time (she also only charged me $23 then). Not so this time. I'm not sure how much she is now charging for a hair wash and blow dry (I asked for half dry too). But she charged me $30 total, which means she tacked on $12 to the $18 base haircut price. $12 for a wash and half blow dry?! Ridic. read more

I went here today at the recommendation of my fellow Yelpers. I do not regret my decision. When I get an idea in my head, I am pretty urgent about following it through- as a procrastinator, and an impatient one at that, I feel the pressure to do the deed (whatever that may be) as quickly and efficiently as possible. So, when I decided late last night that I wanted a haircut, it was the first thought on my mind this Sunday morning. I walked in and was immediately seated upon my request for a cut and color. I have let the whole winter go by sporting my long, straggly, sun-bleached tresses. I wanted a solid dark color and simple trim, with not so simple layers. I got exactly what I wanted and couldn't be happier. I haven't even suffered the usual post-haircut trauma I usually do (change can be such a b**** sometimes...). Have I seriously not reviewed this salon yet? I am a broke college student. Therefore, I cannot afford my luxurious haircuts at JCBC any longer.. Luckily I've found someone who is equally good with the scissors, for a great price and without any frills. Pauline is my definite go-to for haircuts! She and her hubby run this nice, clean salon together, and they are both so nice and always have a smile on! Pauline is straightforward and will give you exactly what you want. I've never had the problem where I ask for one inch off and I get a zillion off instead, like at other Asian salons. She'll ask you questions so you know you're going to get what you want ("Where do you want your layers to start? How about your bangs?", etc.). She really delivers, and it's even better if you've got a picture with you. I just came in today for a cut, actually, and she gave me lovely layers exactly like the picture I showed her, meanwhile still keeping the length I'd asked for. I was afraid for a second that it turned out too short, but nope! It was *perfect*! Never paid more than $15 for a cut here...... :D!!! Score! On the advice of Yelpers, I made a same-day appointment and came in with a few pictures of my hairstyle of choice, which was essentially the cut I already had, trimmed, with less body. Afterwards, the cut looked absolutely perfect with damp hair, but once I got home, it looked a lot choppier than it should have been. She had used scissors instead of a razor to layer, and I'm used to the latter. The layers don't look as refined. It does look better after a few days once it has grown out, however. When you're paying $22 for a shampoo and a cut ($15 dry), there has to be a catch. I lose some trust and having that familiar rapport. I always thought of seeing my stylist as going to therapy; to me, the price was always worth what I'd get in return, which not only involved a haircut, but friendship--and that's priceless. Shear Image is one of those places where you need to be sure of what you want. It seems obvious, but I trust my stylist enough to do what she thinks would look best after little direction, and it always comes out great. And for $80, I'd expect it to. But if all you want to do is "cut" to the chase, so to speak, you can't beat it. Being direct about what you want for a cheap cut is not a bad compromise. She will do whatever you want done to your hair (and is very open and understanding about it), so the more specific you are, the better. The wash was very thorough (by whom I believe was her husband) and worth the $7 "splurge" if your haircut doesn't require it. Being that it is a salon, she also offers other services, such as manicures and waxing. read more

Thank you, Yelpers for directing me to this place! I went in for a "trim" at a Great Clips in Santa Clara, out of desperation, about a week earlier, and hated the way the woman bluntly cut my ends. I have very thin hair but A LOT of it, so the bottom just poofs out if its not cut right. I ended up in that can't-be-happy-with-anything-until-this-hair-dilemma-is-fixed kind of mood, so I turned to Yelp for a last minute solution and up popped Shear Image Salon! Unfortunately it was Labor Day, so they were closed, but after class on Tuesday I strolled in, without an appointment and got the best haircut ever. No, really. EVER. I mean, this was nothing fancy, but the lady did EXACTLY what I asked for. I told her to take the weight out of the bottom, give it some choppy layers, and make it sit nice and flat. I brought a photo, just for backup and she gave me a confident nod and started going wild. Every snip made me happy because I could just tell she got it. $12 dry cut, $22 wash + cut. Found this place off Yelp based on the reviews and the prices, so this review is based on a first timer's experience. I went in this morning (Tuesday) without an appointment after randomly deciding to get a haircut the night before, so that's probably my fault that they weren't open until around 10AM when their website and phone voice mail said "open 9AM." Yuuup, I got there around 9:30AM, waited for a bit, and decided to go grocery shopping, figuring that I'd just try and call them in half an hour or something.. But anyway, despite that minor inconvenience, which probably wouldn't have occurred if I had just scheduled an appointment, I liked my haircut! The lady did a wonderful job! I showed her a picture from my phone, and after that, the Yelp reviews below have pretty much summed it up: she followed the picture very accurately. She was VERY focused (albeit quiet) while working on my hair. I completely changed my hairstyle, which was probably why it took her awhile to get through my hair. Thumbs up for not adding the usual Asian flair to my hair by thinning it out! One thing to note is that the lady doesn't thoroughly brush the hair crumbs off your neck, shoulders, etc. and the $22 wash + cut doesn't include the wash after the cut... Kinda interesting since I've always had the wash-cut-wash deal at other places for about the same price. Of course, I didn't mind at all since I always go home straight away to wash my hair. I came in with some seriously bad hair =| (after I bought box color @ walgreens which faded in 2 days) First, she trimmed off my split ends *yay* and I mean actually trimmed - not chopped off like a lot of places like to do - so I got to keep all my length :) and my hair looked super shiny and healthy. Definitely a plus, since I'm desperately trying to grow it out. Time was spent on my hair actually fixing the damage with the new color, blending it all out evenly and it came out perfect, just what I wanted :) Dark Ash Brown looks smashing - I love the end result. It looks HOT!!!! It all came out to ONLY $80+tip (cut & color - long hair), which for what I got is probably upwards of $200 anywhere else. I was feeling cheap and broke, but I wanted a haircut so I went to Pauline. I have straight thick asian hair that is pretty easy to cut, but I was just not satisfied with the cut Pauline gave me. She layered it way too much and it just looks scraggly and thin now. Hopefully it will grow out in a month or so. I also got my eyebrows waxed here and I love them!! I got a haircut for $15 and the eyebrows for $10. $25 for both a haircut and waxing is super cheap and you can't even get away with a haircut for $25 at most places in SF. So to get straight to the point, I just needed a trim to tide me over until my trip to Korea this year where I am eagerly awaiting to get my hair done like a sexy kpop idol. And since money is a little tight these days, I didn't want to shell out $50-60 for trim which is why I turned to yelp to find this place. Good reviews, cheap price ($15), and relatively close to where I live. Sweet! But... I'm not going to lie...I was scared shitless. $15??? For real? Granted there's no shampoo wash like other yelpers have mentioned, but I was going to take a shower anyway so made no diff to me. The place is surprising cozy. The husband greeted me warmly at the door and offered refreshments. The woman who cut my hair listened to what I wanted, looked at the picture I brought (due to the advice from other yelpers), and then proceeded to tell me what she was going to do, advising she was going to cut a little bit more than what I wanted to get rid of my dead ends. However, I actually think she didn't cut enough. My hair still looked super long at the end. And at first, I didn't like how the layers fell, but I really couldn't fault her any as the cut looked exactly like the pic I brought in and I could see she cut off 2 inches by the scraps on the floor. So I then waited about a month to review this to see if it would grow on me (I tend to hate my haircuts at first, but then love it once it grows out a little). It's alright. For $15, I'm pretty satsified. I'd def come back for a trim. But I kind of think this is a place that you only come to get trims or simple haircuts for. I'd be nervous to get a major cut here. Just a note, even though I was able to get same day appt, the salon was very busy with clients booked all day and walk ins coming in often. And this was on a weekday afternoon too. I was in desperate need of a haircut and my regular stylist didn't have a last-minute appointment opening, so I went to Yelp (oh, how I love you, Yelp!). I found this gem and couldn't have been happier with the result. I called Shear Image at ~11 am on a weekend and got an appointment for the same day. One thing to remember is that the $12 haircut entails a DRY CUT. I personally don't like dry cuts, because my hair gets kind of poofy throughout the day and I don't feel a dry cut would come out as sculpted as a wet cut on my hair. So I added a shampoo and a blowout to the cut, which came out to $30-$35 total. You absolutely cannot find that anywhere else!! Another thing you'll want to know is that you MUST already know what kind of haircut you want when you get there. She doesn't offer suggestions, which seems odd at first, but perhaps it's because she is on a time-crunch. This wasn't a huge deal for me, as I always have an idea of what I want before I walk into a salon. Pauline was sweet and friendly, though not huge on small talk, which I didn't mind. Her husband was quiet and sweet and did a great job on the shampoo and scalp massage. Overall, my experience here was great. I do recommend making an appointment, especially on weekends, as she had to turn away several walk-ins during the ~30 minute time I was there. read more

A month later I hit Yelp to do some serious research and saw all the great reviews for Shear Image Salon, and was so happy to find all the praise is 100% legit. Pauline is by far the best and most consistent person to ever cut my hair and at $12 per haircut, I will probably never go anywhere else as long as I live in this city. The people here are very friendly even though we were just walk-ins and they still squeezed us into her schedule. Waited approx. 20 minutes. So, like a few months ago, I got haircut on a different place, and what they did to my hair was awful. Can't even begin to describe it, and I´m not going to. Today, I showed up here, in this salon after reading a bunch of great reviews about it. Pauline, with a lot of patience, found back the shape of my previous haircut.
