Took my 10 yr old American Eskimo dog here because he had two soft lumps on his back. They said they needed to come off and scheduled him to have it done the next morning. I foolishly didn't ask what the cost would be. It was almost one thousand dollars in total! They sent him home to me with an Elizabethan collar and no pain killers. When my dog awoke, he was in excruciating pain and was up all night crying and trying to get at the spots. I met them at the office the following morning to ask for pain medication, and the dr walked right past me without even saying a word. Very rude and uncaring! The following year he got another mass... His new vet said it was a harmless fatty mass that older dogs get. I had been ripped off and put my dog through that agony for no reason. I just moved to the area, and my 15 (almost 16) year old Jack Russell Terrier started feeling under the weather. She's old, so it's not unusual for her to be slow moving in the mornings, but she seemed weaker than normal and was having more and more accidents in the house. I chose this vet because he was close, and I noticed they did low cost shots, which made me feel like they cared about low income people that wanted to take their dog to the vet but didn't always have the money. Well I took her in and told him what was going on. He gave me two options. A cheaper option of antibiotics and a cortisone shot, or blood work and x-rays. Because I was concerned for my dog and because it had been over two years since I had blood work done, I opted for the more expensive option. I guess that's all it took for him to see I loved my dog and was willing to pay to get her healthy. Blood work came up good, x-rays showed hardly anything. He said there was a touch of something on her blood work, that made him think maybe she had a minor infection. Then he started to milk me for everything I was worth. He gave me two medications, along with the shot, and then two supplements. Lastly, he added a bag of dog food that would supposedly be good for her and help her cognitive problems. The total came to over $800. Money, I honestly don't have, but was willing to go in debt for the love of my dog. The next day after I brought her home, she would not move. She was so weak and out of it, I honestly thought she was dying. My mom said that maybe it was the cortisone shot that did it, so I googled it, and sure enough it causes lack of energy and muscle weakness. I had taken my dog in for these problems, and he gave her something that literally made her worse. I tried calling the vet, just to find out what I should do, if it was the shot or not, but he wouldn't talk to me. He just wanted me to bring her in again. Of course he did, so he'd get more money. I didn't take her, and the next day, she seemed to feel better and back to normal. The shot had worn off. Well then came the problems with the food he gave me. It was $60 for a bag, and a look at the ingredients tells me this dog food is WORSE than the grain free diet I've been giving her. There is no reason it should cost that much, and now after a few days of eating it, my dog is growing less and less interested. Lastly, the antibiotic. Every time I give it to her, she gets extremely restless. She can't calm down. Won't sleep. Again, I took her in for these problems, explained to him about how she paces and such, and this vet seemed to give me something that made her worse. She's always been a bit absent minded, but she's never had trouble sleeping. It took her hours last night to finally just settle down and go to sleep. After googling the drug, these side effects are there, plus worse ones, like weakening her immune system. She's old, I'm sure it's already weak. I'm going to take her off the antibiotic tonight and see if there is improvement, which I think there will be. But because of this vet and his money hungry tactics, I am $800 in debt. He milked me for all I was worth, and he knew I would pay because I loved my dog. I don't trust him at all after all the trouble I've been having. I can't even call him to ask a simple question. I will not be taking my dog back to his man. I don't think he has any concern for the animals he treats. I think he's just looking to make money off of people's love and concern for their furry family members. read more

Super Doctor After visiting our local vet who did a couple of things and sent me on my way to the hospital because they were going to close soon, off we went to the hospital, half dead. More test and sometime later we were sent home to just wait. I took my dog in that has respiratory issues. The doctor came in and put him on the scale. He took his temp and my dog didnt have a fever. When doc did the exam of his gums he told me to come and look that his gums were white and he isnt getting oxygen. The doc told me my dog is very sick and that they would have 2 run 700.00 in diag tests before he could tell me whats wrong..... I said I dont think i can afford that right now. He said so you want to put him down?? I said no, I would like at least an xray to see why hes breathing so hard. He did the xray and came back and said he can't tell from just the xray and that more tests shuld be done... or he said i can give him antibiotic and cortisone.. I said no that's not going to help his breathing... so the doc said be honest with me .. what are we working with? And asked if I was indigent.... I said I have 500.00 to spend and could he do blood work?? He said no thats not enough money and said I should bring my dog 2 Halifax vet for the indigent ... I have never met a vet that was so judgemental about my financial status... and never been treated so poorly like My dog doesn't matter... I thought you became a vet because u had empathy and passion for animals... He is an awful, cold hearted, selfish, money hungry ASSHOLE....... please dont go to this vet. read more

MONEY HUNGRY Used this vet when we first moved here cause they were close by. After first visit for anal expression, they had me stay in the room!! R u serious I don't want to see my great dane get this done. Ok my bad for not demanding on being out of the room. Next thing I know they hv my dog on 3 meds & $300 later... So then I used them for boarding on a holiday & they said I had to pre pay due to it being a holiday. Only would hv additional charges if they had to give any meds or anything extra. Ok I get that. So 4 days later I come to get them & they state I owe $26. I said ok what happened what did u give them? The red head MG stated no she under charged my for the rate & shld hv charged me more. I said, well I pre paid & this is what u quoted me plus I already paid & u r nit getting any more $. She stated she would call the cops, I said please do. She never did. We had words then she told me to get my fat butt out of there building. I asked to speak to the dr & she told me he didn't hv time for me. Then another customer came in & he finally came out just to tell me ... Nothing he just stood there. So I hv never been back & hope no one else will either. read more

I have always had a great experience here. Dr. Sheffield and his team are very good and care about your animals. I have had to bring two animals in for euthanasia and the whole staff was very understanding and helpful through the whole process. They even sent sympathy cards to our house. I have had several great experiences with Dr Sheffield. He ALWAYS tells me the cost of treatment and medicine UP Front. And.. although I have silently 'questioned' some of his diagnoses when I first heard them, it turned out that he was always right on. Best Vet I have ever had and I am a 58 year old life long pet owner.
