Being from Westchester County and having also lived in NJ for some time, I am used to having the best bread and bagels around. Believe it or not, it's not that easy to find good bagels in this area of CT, so I was extremely happy when I had my first Shef's bagel. They are always fresh and crispy on the outside and soft and delicious on the inside. The cream cheese is awesome too. Not only that, but I've always enjoyed going in and ordering breakfast bc everyone in there is always so nice. The owner is almost always there and he's super nice and welcoming. read more

I have eaten New York bagels tried every place throughout Connecticut and came across Shefs. I will now only eat a Shefs bagel. They are incredible plus the staff is extremely friendly. I am reeeeally picky about bagels. They must be boiled- crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. These did not disappoint. Probably the best I've tasted in CT- they remind me of a good New York bagel. Someone bought me an everything bagel yesterday, I didn't get to eat it until today, and it was still so fresh I didn't even need to toast it! Best bagels in Cheshire. The bagels are big and have that consistency you look for with a slight snap on the outside and a chewy internal consistency. We usually get bacon egg and cheese sandwiches on a french toast bagel with syrup and it gives us the perfect balance of salty sweetness. Everything else I have had from here has been equally good and we usually hit this place up almost every weekend. Delicious bagels but awkward layout toordering and paying and getting coffee which led to delays and confusion when it got bit busy with 5 customers. When it was quieter it worked well though. Had the lox bagel sandwich which was fantastic if bit pricey (about $7) but it was loaded and kept me full all day so I think worth it. The wait and disorganized feeling was made up for by super friendly and warm staff who apologized for the delay and were clearly working hard to keep the lines moving. Would recommend. read more

I am a regular at Shef's because this place continues to deliver consistently. The staff is pleasant and efficient, but more importantly, the bagels are thick and extremely satisfying. I usually opt for the breakfast sandwiches - both bacon, egg & cheeses and the sausage, egg & cheeses are delightful and are a great way to start the day. I've experimenting with all flavors of bagels and still can't make my mind up over which one I like best! read more

Shefs is great, and so happy it opened! we go often on the weekends and my wifes goes often on the way to work in the mornings. Great staff, and very friendly with our 18 month old when we eat there. Sometimes, i dream of the Farmers on an everything... highly recommended!!! Im not a coffee drinker but my wife loves they alternate their flavored coffee... apparently thats a good thing! The other local bagel place we went to for a few years. they knew they were the only bagel place in town, and their service was horrible and took it for granted. I hope Shefs gains much more business simply because they value their customers! read more

About as close as you will get to a NY bagel in the middle of the 'burbs. Really friendly staff and not usually too much of a wait (as long as its not a saturday morning). They are reasonably priced and their lunch sandwiches are good too! I recommend the salt bagel with scallion cream cheese......sooooooo good. read more

I discovered Shef's here on Yelp, while looking for the closest approximation of a NYC bagel. Drove up to Cheshire and was super impressed with the bagels! They're hefty like a real bagel, with a crisp crust hiding a dense, moist center. They remind me of Ess-a-bagel, our favorite in NYC! Awesome! We now come here regularly to stock up!! Really the only thing keeping me from giving them five stars is that they have too many sweet bagel flavors instead of savories -- I wish they'd make a pumpernickel without the raisins. Also, their flavored cream cheeses are excellent but they could use a jalapeño or something "exotic" like olive or artichoke. Otherwise, I love this place! read more

Love Love LOVE THE BAGELS. AWESOME, prices they're fair and not overpriced. HOWEVER, as previously being in food service, I have learned that you should ALWAYS wear gloves when handling ready to eat food. Yes, most employees do, but there has been at least one time I recall where the woman took the bagel I chose and instead of wearing gloves or grabbing it with paper, she used her bare hands. It was being toasted, but still, the use of gloves or paper would be more appetizing and preferred. Not an unsanitary place, and is always well kept, but that one instance was a little questionable. The bagels are the best I've had from around the towns over in that area, you can tell by how busy they are that people love their food. Which also reminds me that they have VERY QUICK SERVICE. This is the closest thing you are going to get to a New York bagel in Connecticut, crisp on the outside and soft & chewy on the inside. My only knock is that sometimes the bagels could be a little crispier, but these guys are by far the best bagel in the area. If you're sick of what passes for a bagel at Dunkin Donuts, then try Shef's. You won't be disappointed! This place knows how to treat a customer. The staff is extremely friendly and polite. My husband brought home a few bagels from Shef's to sample. I'm from Long Island, so I'm a really picky bagel eater. The everything bagels were done just right...they had the right kosher/rock salt blended with the other toppings to give it the right taste and although I like my bagels denser, you can tell that they were hand-rolled and boiled as they should be. So happy to have this in Cheshire! Now they just need to make/get some of the accompaniments like smoked fishes and salads. read more

The process of rolling hundreds of the magnificent toroids begins at 4:00 AM every morning and nobody touches them during the complex process but Shef. Over time he has introduced very tasty accompaniments: lox, gourmet salads and more. Home baked cookies and soups round out the offerings. Do not overlook the soups. I've been to Shef's at least thirty times during the past year. Every time, I am treated to kind, friendly service and some of the best bagels I have ever eaten. They make the food the way you would make it yourself if you had the time and the expertise. The bagels with egg and meat and cheese are really good too though. They have a good balance of egg to cheese to meat to... onion I think it is. I'm a bagel snob. I avoid the bagel chains and franchises and anyplace that doesn't understand that an authentic bagel must be boiled first before baking. I grew up eating great UNTOASTED bagels at Bagel King in Norwalk, which has sadly gone down hill as of late.. Good bagels shouldn't need toasting. BK bagels always had the perfect combination of crunchy exterior and chewy interior that you won't find at Village or Einstein's or Dunkin' Donuts or the other hack bagel places and they are great untoasted. Now that I have found Shef's I can stop venting about the lack of a good bagel in the area. Nice tough exterior and chewy on the inside and delicious without having to be toasted. Not as dense as Bagel King's were and lacking the crunch but still very tasty and handmade from scratch not frozen or pre-made dough like some other places. They have a nice variety but they can run out of some of the more popular flavors if you don't time you visit correctly. They do bake more throughout the day so if they are out of your favorite more might be on their way from the oven. read more
