    Onion bagel
    Jay S.

My first attempt of trying Kettle Bagels I went on a weekday to the Queen Street location. They are open until 2 PM and I arrived at 11 AM to take home some bagels, and try a lunch sandwich there. The only thing they had there was one rainbow bagel, and they were not bringing any more bagels out the girls said. Why are they even open. So I am giving them a second chance at this location. I ordered a half dozen variety of bagels. One bagel I ordered was the large onion bagel. When I got home I notice I received a regular size bagel. I also order two cheddar bagels. It was a slice of season cheese slap on top of a plain bagel. If you try to put the bagel top in a toaster the cheese will come off. So you have a toasted bottom and a non toasted top. Found their bagels to be doughy and tasteless.

Recommended: Fine in a pinch. Overall: It's tough to find a good bagel in this area, so it's a okay option for a bagel and cream cheese--but skimpy breakfast sandwich. Snapshot: Food: 3/5 Drink: NA Vibe: Take out Service: 4/5 ‍‍ Family-Friendly: NA Highlights: -Perfect For: If you're craving a bagel in the Southington area -Bonus Tip: Ask for an extra egg on the breakfast sandwich All The Details: In Connecticut, finding a decent bagel spot can be a challenge, so expectations have to be adjusted accordingly. Kettle Bagels is an okay choice, but their inconsistency is notable. I visited twice within a week, post-daycare drop-off, and both times my order was mixed up, requiring a return to the counter. They were nice about it at least. The Everything Bagels were a bit of a letdown. The first visit, they were overloaded with onion pieces to the point of being nearly inedible. The second time was better, but the bagel still lacked salt, tasting bland and doughy. Also, the breakfast sandwich was notably scant on meat and egg, as seen in my photo. Next time, I'd definitely need to double up on egg and meat. I've been told I'm a bit of a bagel snob, and perhaps my standards are high, but the inconsistency and incorrect orders were disappointing. That said, compared to other local options that taste more like bagel-shaped bread, Kettle Bagels at least offers something closer to a real bagel. I'd consider giving them another shot if I was in a bind, but it's not a place I'll actively seek out or recommend.

Ordered an egg and cheese ($7.74) and this is the quality of food I received. I also got a coffee that tasted water. The only good part about this breakfast was the timing in which I received it.

French toast bagel with apple cinnamon schmear

I ordered this via delivery. This bagel was so crunchy! I am not a fan of soggy bagels.. prefer well done (to my friends who may read this, I know, I know surprise lol). I got their apple cinnamon schmear which had small bits of apple in it. It was really good but next time I think I'll ask for it to be on the side, there was too much on it.

It's nice to have a bagel shop in the local area I'm just not a fan of these! Got the cheddar today and it had an overwhelming taste of thyme in it! Also the cheddar was falling off the bagel! Requested it toasted but it was still soggy and overall I'd say no matter how many times you request a toasted bagel it doesn't taste toasted! Not my favorite but service is good and location is good!

Kettle Bagels Chorizo, egg and cheese

"Delicious Breakfast & Lunch" I tried Kettle Bagels at the new location on Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike in Plantsville, Ct. And I'm happy I did. So far, I've been there twice. First visit, I went for lunch. I had "The Vito" on a roll. Salami, capicola, pepperoni, provolone, hot peppers, lettuce, tomato, onion, oil & vinegar, and herbs. It tasted like they sprinkle oregano or italian seasoning on the sandwich. All of the ingredients were fresh and delicious, but the herbs are what really put the sandwich over the top. My second visit was for breakfast. I had a chorizo, egg and cheese on a roll. I assumed that they would take a chorizo sausage and split it, grill or fry it, and put it on the sandwich. But they did something that I've never seen before. They had chorizo sliced thin like a deli meat and put a few slices on the sandwich. The presentation was better and it was much easier to eat than a couple hunks of sausage that would most likely slip out of the side anyway. Both sandwiches were very good.

We couldn't wait to come back. Several months later on our second visit, we arrived well before their posted closing time - 9pm. It was around 7:45pm, the lights were on, but the door was locked and the staff seemed to be cleaning up. One of them looked up, saw us standing at the door and then went back to doing whatever they were doing without bothering to engage with us. It was incredibly frustrating having driven almost an hour with the expectation of getting some delicious food, only to be ignored by staff at a time when they were supposed to be open. Many months later (giving them the benefit of the doubt that the early closure on our last visit was a fluke) we made the trip up again. We arrived to find the place was locked up and dark - again during a time when they were supposed to be open. Today I was with some friends and we stopped to have lunch at Smokin' With Chris next door. During our meal, I mentioned my past experiences with The Lab, but also said how good the food was. So, we walked over to look at the menu and possibly pick up dinner for later that evening. It was around 1:30pm, the lights were off and the door was locked. I double-checked their website, and they were supposed to be open at 11:30am. While I was on my phone, an employee came up, unlocked the door, turned on the lights and began his shift - two full hours after they were supposed to be open! WTF?! Apparently, the owners of The Lab seem to believe that their food is so epic that they can just operate their business whenever they like regardless of their posted hours. This total lack of consideration for their customers is beyond insulting. It's really too bad because the food is good, but not good enough to offset the unprofessional manner the owners are running (or in this case, not running) this place. There are way too many other great dining options available nearby that actually adhere to their posted hours to put up with this nonsense.

Also got a plain cheese quesadilla, Mac and cheese and a burger. The grinder was amazing. So flavorful, fresh and bold. The white cheddar Mac and cheese was pretty good. I do wish my fries were a bit crunchier and not as soft but overall everything we ordered was great. The chipotle aioli on my burger was a nice added bonus of flavor. Messy, dripping with flavor just like I like the food haha. The atmosphere is fun and cute, cool inside with art for sale. And outside you can sit and check out other stores around.

Long-time fan, but disappointed with the new Italian combo portions…read more I've been coming here for years and have always loved the Italian combo grinder -- the bread is still fantastic (crusty outside, soft inside, just right), the long hot peppers pack that perfect kick, and the overall flavor profile is still spot-on. The shop looks great after the recent updates under new ownership -- cleaner, brighter, more inviting space. That said, I was really let down on my first visit since the change. The grinder I got for lunch had noticeably less meat than before. What used to be a hearty, well-stacked sandwich with generous layers of cold cuts now felt skimpy on the protein -- probably about half (or less) the amount I was used to. The other components (cheese, veggies, hot sauce) were fine, but the lack of meat made it feel more like a veggie-heavy sub than the satisfying Italian combo I always counted on. Everything else was good -- friendly service, quick prep, fresh ingredients -- so I'm hoping this was just an off day or an adjustment period with the new team. I'd love to see the portions return to their old generous standard, because the foundation here is still strong. 2.5/5 stars from me right now. Still my go-to deli in the area, but I'll be watching to see if the meat comes back in full force. Keep up the great bread and peppers!

It has taken me way too long to write this review, but I only recently started reviewing some of…read morethe places I've loved over the years, and The Eatery absolutely deserves one. When I lived in Wallingford for about three years, The Eatery became one of my places. I would stop in for breakfast before work, or someone from my team would make the breakfast run. At least once a month, we had to have an Eatery morning. We ordered lunch from here too, so over time this little place became part of our routine. When I eventually left Wallingford, my team actually bought me my last breakfast sandwich from The Eatery before I left. It sounds like such a small thing, but it was honestly bittersweet because they knew how much I loved this place. And years later? It's still just as good. One of the biggest reasons The Eatery has always stood out to me is the customer service. Everyone I've encountered has been sweet, polite and welcoming, but I especially have to mention Sam. Over the years, she became one of those people who made you feel like more than just another customer. She genuinely got to know her regulars. There were times I'd place my order online and it felt like she already knew I was coming. I'd walk through the door and she'd have everything ready. She has always been incredibly kind, caring and attentive, not only with me, but with the customers around her as well. That kind of customer service is something you remember. My son has been eating their food since he was around one year old, and he STILL loves it. Now whenever we're back in Connecticut for his appointments, my mom will ask, "Can we please stop at The Eatery?". Sometimes we're able to make it and sometimes we're not, but this past Friday we finally did. I ordered my favorite kind of breakfast: a bacon, egg & cheese on a pretzel roll. SO GOOD. The pretzel roll with the warm egg, bacon and melted cheese is such a perfect combination. My mom ordered her bacon, egg & cheese on ciabatta, and my son had one as well. Although apparently his wasn't enough, because he ended up stealing mine. Apparently Mom's food always tastes better. I also tried what I believe was their watermelon mint refresher/tea, which was refreshing and perfect with breakfast, while my mom had a caramel coffee that she absolutely loved. And please don't think they're only a breakfast spot. Their lunch is just as good. I used to order their salads all the time during work, and they were always incredibly fresh. In fact, my coworkers were notorious for wanting some of my salad because they knew where it came from. Everything always tasted fresh and thoughtfully prepared rather than like something that had been sitting around. Another thing I love is seeing how much this place has grown. I remember what it was like when I first discovered it, and coming back years later and seeing what they've created is wonderful. They've added so much personality while somehow keeping the same warm feeling and the same wonderful people. The atmosphere is adorable. It's bright, clean, modern and welcoming, with tons of beautiful greenery, hanging plants, warm wood tones, woven light fixtures and fun pops of color. The big "Hello Wallingford!" mural is such a cute touch. There are little details everywhere, but it doesn't feel overdone, it has that relaxed neighborhood café feeling where you can grab your food and go or just enjoy being there. I also love how they change things up for the seasons and different occasions. They always seem to have something fun going on, especially around fall and the holidays, and I believe they offer catering as well. Funny enough, before I discovered The Eatery, I had driven past it so many times without realizing what I was missing. Once I finally stopped in, it became somewhere I went for years. If you live in Wallingford, you need to try this place. And honestly, even if you're coming from North Haven, New Haven or elsewhere in the area, make the drive. It's worth it. I may not live in Connecticut anymore, but whenever we're back in the area, The Eatery is still one of those places my family wants to stop. The food is delicious, the ingredients taste fresh, the atmosphere is beautiful, and most importantly the people have remained just as kind and welcoming as I remember them. Some restaurants are simply places you eat. The Eatery became part of my memories of living in Wallingford, and that's probably the best compliment I can give them. Keep telling them they need a second location in another state! Everyone deserves to try how amazing they are
