I came here for lunch recently and had a very good experience! Ordering was easy at the window with a nice big menu. The food came out quickly and was delicious. I went with a 1/4 lb burger with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and pickles. I asked for it as rare as they could make it and they cooked it nicely. The side of onion rings were great as well. They were nice and crispy! Plenty of seating to choose from here. They have picnic tables close to the order window and a good number of tables under a roof to keep you protected from the sun and weather. There's also a large ceiling fan in there for when the temps go up. Service was friendly! From the order taker to the order deliverer..everyone was smiling and pleasant. This is a really great spot to check out! I need to come back to explore the menu more; they have much more than just burgers. And of course, to try the ice cream! read more

If I could've given it a half star, I would've...... I cannot believe how flabbergasted I was to see all of these "great" reviews for it to all be hoax. I'm supportive of ALL small businesses everywhere & those who know me, know this. I just can't let people keep thinking that this is a "must try" spot? I decided to give this establishment a shot while driving back home. I was starving & told myself I'd finally be down to try Rose Dairy. First off, the staff on site this day didn't seem to want to be there what so ever. They didn't provide us with a receipt which is a norm to me, if ordering whether that's to stay or to-go. Before grabbing my food at their pick-up window, more patrons had started to come; making me think it must be good so let me be patient. The entire order was wrong, one way or another. There were no fries, when we ordered a combo. The "crispy chicken sandwich" had school like chicken tenders and I doubt adding anything to it would've made the taste any better. I tried to dip it in their "Mac sauce" which we payed for & it tasted like mayonnaise with a touch of color. I didn't take a picture of the "cheeseburger" which was just a beef patty on a bun, because they forgot all the toppings I asked them to add. The "fall dog" was basically a chili cheese hotdog, truly dreadful, & I wish I didn't have to say that. I've had plenty of chili cheese dogs before and this one was the worst, it was also FREEZING cold? I only walked like 7 feet to my table right next to where I picked it up..... I'm super disappointed, will not be returning not even for their mid flavored pumpkin shake which I didn't take a photo of because at that point I was pissed. read more

I was craving a delicious grilled or charbroiled hot dog with mustard and relish, and though I've lived about 15 minutes away for many years, I had never visited Rose's Dairy Bar before. I'm so glad I finally did! The hot dog was exactly what I was hoping for, and to my pleasant surprise, the bun was toasted and buttered--yum! My daughter ordered a grilled cheese with tomato soup, and a milkshake, and she loved every bite. The picnic tables were a great spot to sit on such a beautiful day, making the experience even more enjoyable. Joey, one of the owners, came over and asked how everything was, which was a nice touch of customer service. While eating, I could smell the burgers grilling, and it was so tempting I almost ordered one to go. Later that evening, I couldn't resist--I drove back and got myself a 1/4 lb burger. Joey recognized me from earlier and even shook my hand. Such thoughtful service to match the iconic and nostalgic vibe of this dairy bar. I told him I had come back because the burgers smelled amazing! He introduced himself and Jimmy as the owners and explained how they make their burgers from freshly ground meat, not frozen patties. Funny enough, I'm very picky about that and can definitely taste the difference--hand-formed burgers are night and day compared to frozen pre-formed ones. The cook must've read my mind, too, because he asked if I wanted American or cheddar cheese right as I was about to ask if they had cheddar. Rose Dairy reminds me of an old-fashioned outside ice cream shop with grill food options. No gimmicks,nothing fancy, just good. They had more then a dozen hard serve ice cream flavors, soft serve was vanilla, chocolate, and swirl. They also have shakes,sundays, hotdogs, burgers, variety of sandwiches,fries,onion rings,etc. They do have outside seating. My wife and I had their excellent soft serve ice cream swirl. A Cheshire "institution" and great warm weather spot for a bite to eat and a sweet finish. The only negative, and knowing ice cream is expensive everywhere these days, is that the Razzle (like a Blizzard) was very expensive. You can buy 3 "half gallons" of the supermarket ice cream on sale that week for the same price. I got a large peanut butter cup Razzle. The cup wasn't full either, but it was delicious. read more

Rose Dairy is a seasonal dairy bar that opened in Cheshire, Connecticut in 1951. It was founded by James Barbato Sr. After seeing the chance to make a future for his family, James broke ground on a plaza that he owned in Cheshire. Originally built as a small white, standalone building, he began selling soft serve ice cream and named the business "Rose Dairy" after his wife Lillian Rose. It soon became a big hit for local families, young sweethearts, and teens. Sons James Jr. and Al "Butch" soon followed their father into the business. The family also opened a restaurant next door named the Char-Fire. The dairy bar was leased to Dairy Queen in 1960 and remained in the chain's hand for several decades. In 2005, Butch's twin sons Jim and Joe took over the dairy bar and reopened it as "Rose Dairy". In addition to serving soft serve ice cream and hard serve by Gifford's, Rose Dairy also now serves char broiled burgers, Hummel Bros hot dogs, sandwiches, fries, onion rings, and lobster rolls. The savory items are cooked just like they were when Butch was the cook at the Char-Fire. I recently stopped at Rose Dairy with my family. It was very hot that day and we desperately wanted some frozen treats to cool off with. The menu featured so many items that we had trouble choosing at first. My son had a small cup of Cookies n' Cream, my wife had Blueberry & Pomegranate Sorbet, and I had a "Del's Deep Freeze" (Del's Frozen Lemonade layered with any flavor of soft serve ice cream). Del's Lemonade is a favorite summer treat of mine, so to have it layered with ice cream sounded just amazing! I chose to have it layered with Vanilla ice cream. All of us really enjoyed our frozen treats! We also ordered a side of French Fries. Although you can't eat inside Rose Dairy, there are quite a few picnic tables to sit at under their outdoor pavilion. We'll definitely be stopping at Rose Dairy for several more summers! read more

Overall not a bad experience. I ordered a bacon and bleu cheeseburger platter to go. The service was pleasant enough. The cashier was very polite. The service however was very slow. I was the only customer and my food took nearly 20 minutes. The burger itself was good. It had a good char on it. Points off for the burger coming out well when I asked for medium. That aside, the ingredients were fresh and the bleu crumbles were a nice tough. The salty nature of the cheese was a good tasting component. A little on the pricey side for a side of the road burger joint but the price can be understood when you take the fresh ingredients into account read more

The half-pound "Butch Burger" is probably one of the best burgers around. In fact, if you can find better please let me know! Juicy, hand-packed fresh beef, cooked perfectly. Bacon, cheese, LTM complemented well. I went in wanting a root beer float to finish it off- Stewart's Root Beer & hard vanilla - but opted for a cone of seasonal Southern Peach ice cream, and glad I did. Definitely had to try this (what appears to be) Cheshire institution. Our order did take a while to prepare but not an outrageous amount of time. To me, that's a good thing as you know it was being prepared to order. Food was good and nicely prepared. My wife had the "butch burger" and it did live up to the praise - very tasty and done as requested. I had the buffalo chicken sandwich which was done nicely with a tasty but not-too-hot buffalo sauce, lettuce, tomato and bleu cheese. Crinkle cut fries done nicely topped off our meal. Service was very friendly. Didn't get a chance to try the ice cream menu, but it did look yummy. I did like the fact that unlike many "roadside stands" I've found throughout CT (many of which don't have indoor seating areas), Rose Dairy had an outdoor seating area in a permanent open air covered structure. No "table umbrellas" to have to deal with. Good way to keep out of the sun on those hot summer days - and the ceiling fan in the outdoor area was a nice touch as well. Got a cheeseburger and asked for onion rings instead of fries. Here's what I got. Burger was overcooked/charred and it just felt thrown together. No take out box, but instead it's a paper plate and tin foil. It's pricey too. When I complained about the onion rings I was told it was an up charge after I had already paid. The high schooler couldn't have been less interested in making it right. The manager got involved and made me a fresh onion ring, but it took way to long. Did not have ice cream but my Del's Lemonade which has real cut up lemons at every Del's in New England was void of those. Disappointed would be an understatement. read more

8/10/19 I've driven past Rose Dairy literally thousands of times, never giving a thought to trying it out until today. It's NCIS.......(Not Cooking, It's Sunday). Rose Dairy serves burgers, dogs, chicken sandwiches, fish sandwiches, pretty much any way you want them. Onion rings & fries are optional sides. It's an order at one window, pick up at another when they call your name, kind of place. Cute! There's only outdoor seating on umbrella covered picnic tables in a fenced in area next to the building, so be aware of that. It's very clean, but meant only for the warmer months. I placed my order for a bacon, cheddar burger w/a side of onion rings, and found an open table to wait for my name to be called. A few short minutes later I was chowing down a very good 1/2 pound burger made from a hand formed patty. No flat, thin, hockey pucks here! The burger was really very good, the rings were a bit better than average, but not special in any way. Keeping in mind that the word "dairy" is in the name of this place made me all the more disappointed in the maple walnut ice cream I had after I finished my burger & rings. I kept seeing what I at first thought were bits of styrofoam from the cup the ice cream was served in, until I quickly realized it was ice in the ice cream. The ice cream was less creamy, and more icy. Lesson learned. For ice cream I'll head over to Sweet Claud's, about 75 yards north of here for my ice cream fix from now on. I'll certainly return for a burger or hot dog though! read more

On the way to pick the kid up from the end of a Sunday dance day we decided to go to here. My wife ordered a cheeseburger with fries and black and white milkshake. Myself their bourbon burger bbq cheddar and onion rings with curly fries and chili dog. Her burger was cooked well but bland the fries grilled cheese and milkshake she loved. Now mine the chili dog fell over so the picture was not uploaded as it looked better as served. My burger same thing kind of bland on the meat itself my milkshake had a huge chunk of unmixed soft serve at the bottom. The king thing that knocked down some points was the curly fries. I thought it was my imagination but they tasted of seafood my wife tied and agreed an off taste but we aren't vegetarians so not an issue for us but a thing to be concerned about none the less. read more

Simple and classic. An old-timey hot dog and ice cream stand that's apparently been around since '51. They serve up all the classics - dogs, burgers, fries, and really good ice cream. We stop in here on occasion with family when we visit my sister at Quinnipiac. Haven't had the burgers but the hot dogs are done right, a toasted bun and just the right amount of crunch when you bite into it. It's the kind of place that you don't find much anymore, hope they keep up the good work. No unsweetened iced tea though, so minus a star! What a great find this was for me. Fourth of July, looking for a hot dog to take to someone who had been in the hospital for 3 months. 4th of July, no family functions, looking for a hot dog worthy of msking this person happy. I drove by & had to turn around to go back. Worth every penny & amount of time. On a holiday they were actually happy to greet & see me. i had made 5 attempts to find a CT HOTDOG like Frankies or Blackies to bring to this very patriotic person. I stopped at Cumberland Farms. picked 3 hotdogs & waited in line 20 minutes. I counted that I was the 18 th person in line. when i saw that Rose's made Hummels hot dogs, I took the CF's dogs & threw in the garbage. Rose's takeout packaging was perfect. the young lady that waited on me was sincerely helpful about what I needed & how I needed it. I had better service & respectfulness shown here than Ive had at major costly events. Kudos to Roses! Thankful to employees that you were working on the 4th so I could bring a little piece of happiness to someone on what was an important holiday to them. My neighborhood go to for good burgers and ice cream. While I am a diehard Glenwood customer, I have to compliment the staff at Rose's. They are very friendly and efficient in getting peoples orders out in a reasonable amount of time. I appreciate the fact that they are focused on you and your order even though it is a very busy place on a warm Spring evening. I needed a cheeseburger cooked the way I like and they didn't disappoint. Been here on multiple occasions and they consistently burn everything. They even asked how I wanted my burger cooked so I requested medium and received well-done. Bacon on burger burnt to crisp. Grilled onions on top were so black and tasted of burnt grease they were inedible. Onion rings - burnt too. If they could learn how to use a grill and maybe clean it so everything doesn't have the aftertaste of burnt grease it could be better. In no way does this compare to Frankie's or Blackie's. read more
