Writing a review for the 1.5 hour free virtual intro class with Laurel. Laurel has been nothing but friendly, and affable, creating a safe space for participants to explore their sensuality and get lost in the experience. First, we heard about the start of S Factor, the mission, and the available classes. Then we had a 40 minute warm up, which consisted of stretching and variations of yoga. Good to stretch all those dormant muscles. Have to agree with other Yelp reviewers about the pace being too slow, but I imagine for older participants, the tempo was just right. Since many participants don't have a pole at home and this was an intro class, for the remaining 20ish minutes we did moves that built off our warm-up. All were sensual, slow, and playful. Laurel was great at encouraging us and allowing us not to feel self-conscious repeating seductive moves that are typical to those you would do during a striptease. At home, I felt unmotivated to be rolling around on a floor, repeating moves that are more suitable for practicing with a pole. I would be bummed if I had to pay such hefty price tag for the class with a pace that is more appropriate for older women. The $70 per class price tag is not for broke MS students like myself, so I wouldn't have had the means to try the class if not for a free, digital intro in the times of covid-19. read more

I am definitely an S woman! Hear me roar! *insert cheers and gasps* Sheila Kelley's S Factor is the original creator of the oh so sinfully seductive pole dance workout that has been taking the nation by storm over the past few years. I had heard about this movement from one of my friends at UCLA and she highly recommended it as being one of the best and appealing workouts she's ever done. When I moved to NYC, I needed something to jump start my exercise routine to curb weight gain and decided pole dancing might be just the thing. I was a little worried about it though since I did have an ACL repair in high school but I was assured that my knee would be fine with the movements. They were right! I signed up for an intro class last October and I've been indulging in my Erotic Creature ever since! I look forward to my 2 hour class every single week and that, my friends, is something you need in order to work out. It has to appeal to you and you must truly want to go otherwise you'll drop the routine and just sit home and do nothing. Doing S Factor also got me into signing up for a gym so now I am working out at least 4 times a week... which is what I needed in my new post-college life. You can also sign up for smaller, shorter classes if you want more workouts on the side. As you take more levels or specialty classes, you are rewarded points that you can then use to redeem for other classes. That's a great little reward for someone like me who has been taking the classes for a long period of time. Pole dancing has certainly changed my body and made me stronger and more powerful. You should see some of the things I can do now; I can defy gravity, haha! People often write off pole dancing as a sexual, stripper only type of act but really, strippers can not do what my teachers can do. They are true athletes that compare to the athletic abilities of Cirque du Soleil. They are such beautiful and strong women. Pole dancing is NOT about dancing for a man, or even a woman. It's about dancing for yourself. It gives you such confidence in your own sexy self and the woman-only environment is very warm and friendly. I've made some wonderful friends here and I look forward to another year as an S woman. My S Factor's New Year's resolution is to be able to do the splits and meet the lovely Sheila Kelley. Located in Chelsea, this pole dancing studio is more about the inward spiritual journey of being a female and honoring yourself internally regardless of your shape and size. It is also great for women who want to build confidence in their inner sensual being. The rooms are set up with 3-6 poles and lap dancing chairs. The practices are done barefoot with dim lighting and no mirrors, always dancing to the music. We started the practice with a simple yoga warm up followed by some abs/Pilates and then pole work. I was going to hold off on my review...but after I saw the less then positive write up I decided to chime in. I feel weird writing about one of my favorite workouts that I have ever participated in. Why? Well....I know that my dad occasionally reads my reviews. But...being that I am getting close to 30 (shhhhh.....) I guess I can talk about whatever I want! Anyways....a while ago I was watching Oprah and they had a segment on things to make a woman feel good about herself. One of the interviews was with a woman by the name of Sheila Kelly. She started a workout program called "S-Factor". I was so amazed by the segment and thought in the back of my head...If I am ever in a city that offers this I am totally going to try it!! Fast forward to a few years later.... I had totally forgot about that Oprah show. One day I was talking to my friends and she mentioned that she had to go to her sfactor class. I immediately remembered that segment and logged onto the website to happily see a studio in my area. So what is S-Factor? Basically...the workout is inspired by yoga, ballet, striptease and pole dancing. Yes Dad..I said striptease and pole dancing. The class really stresses that women don't have to be afraid of their bodies or the way their bodies naturally want to move. No matter if you have a big butt or a stomach that is not so flat...every woman is sexy. I never thought an aerobics class could be so empowering. It really has changed how I feel about myself as well as my overall body image. You leave class each week have a huge boost of confidence. Anyone that is around an S-Factor studio I really suggest you try it out. Yes...it is a tad on the expensive side....but every week I could not wait to go to my 2 hour class....and every week when I walked out the door I was counting down the hours until I could walk into the studio again. The classroom is unlike any aerobics studio...no mirrors....dark red lights...candles...and oh yea...stripper poles. The first hour is a pilates/yoga inspired workout....but in a sassy way! The second hour is pole tricks (so fun!) and a dance that you use in class each week. The workouts were hard! I woke up every week after class with my abs killing and my thighs sore. It wasn't all just fun...remember...this is an "aerobics" class. They do have intro classes if you are nervous about just signing up for level 1. Things were sooo amazing when they started out...the instructors were empowering and amazing, the women in the classes were so supportive and encouraging of eachother. But sadly what was once a safe, fun and empowering place to be is now more like a corporation run factory where they crank out new instructors who seem more competitive and less empowering. I've been at S Factor over a year now, started haphazardly with a girlfriend when we had nothing better to do and went to an intro. And I have to admit, it's been a lot of fun. Workout: First you need to understand what S Factor is, and none of their promotional bullshit. S Factor is a workout based in pilates, yoga and dancing. It will, above all else, teach you how to move your body in ways you typically wouldn't. And you'll get more flexible, because your 45 minute warm-up at the beginning of each class involves mainly stretching. You will also gain a strong core, there are abs ladies, sorry, but you'll need it. As you get into the higher levels and start pulling yourself upside down on the pole, you want to use your abs not your arms. These aren't Vegas stripper lessons you take while wasted, this is a real workout. Once warm-up is done, you move on to pole tricks and different moves. It is a combination of striptease and pole dancing, but when's the last time you saw a pole dancer who was out of shape? There's a reason for that, and it's because when you do it right, S Factor's a great cardio workout too. In the last 15 minutes of class, you dance. In the lower levels this involves learning a routine, and in the higher levels you dance alone and improve the whole thing. At it's core S Factor is a workout, and even though it touts itself a female empowerment, as ridiculous as that sounds, it has a lot to do with becoming comfortable with your body. Marlo W. wrote about seeing the instructors' thong, and you will, and how the girls take off their tops, they do. But S Factor will never make you do something you're not comfortable with. You want to wear spandex pants instead of short shorts, fine, I do. And if you don't want to dance with someone in the chair, then don't. Wanna keep you clothes on, go for it. (I will let you know, those short shorts are on ever girl for a reason: when you climb you need friction. Pants don't offer that, you'll just slide down and hit your ass on the floor. And a lot of women who aren't perfect size 0s wear clothes they normally wouldn't in class because they know no one's going to judge them. Most classes continue with the same girls for many months, so you really become friends and go out. That's where some of the "cult-likeness" comes from, Marlo, although I do get you: some girls are obsessed.) All things considered, S Factor's great for women who want to unwind with their workout. They don't want to go run at the gym because it's such a process, or maybe they just don't want to run. The classes combine cardio and core, so long as you try at it and push yourself it's a great workout that feels like fun. It's seems easy, but just don't push yourself too far, because you will feel it later. Think of it as sex, relaxation, working out, feeling good, and ego-boosting all wrapped up into one stiletto. Venue: There are two S Factor locations in New York, on on 23rd between 7th and 8th, and one on 24th between 7th and 6th. The main studio is on 23rd, it's bright and comfy and cozy and has bigger classrooms. The one on 24th is smaller, only has two rooms, and gets a little more crowded. I've been going to the one on 24th, and personally I like it better, but both studios are very well decorated. Most of the staff (including receptionists called "ambassadors," instructors and management) do their best to make you comfortable and enjoy class, but there is one thing you have to remember: This is girls only. Remember what happened when you and your college roommates all got your periods at the same time? Yeah, multiply that bitchiness by 20. Sometimes the staff gets catty, but for the most part everyone's fun. A word of caution on picking an instructor though: you may not love everyone. I personally have been with the same instructor since my intro class, and I love her to pieces. We actually hang out every so often. But some instructors just won't do it for you, and that's perfectly fine. If you don't like instructor, try out another with your make up classes or ask to switch. Every teacher has a different music preference and different teaching style, and most come from different backgrounds. Some are dancers, acrobats, gymnasts, personal trainers, and some just wound up teaching because they though it'd be fun. There will be someone there who will work for you. Notes: 1) It is expensive, and you don't get unlimited classes. You get 1 a week, for 8 weeks for $480. It's an investment, but try out at least one session. 2) It's institutionalized and sensationalized a bit. Don't be put off, I hear the LA studios are much worse. There's a shop, yes, but what gym doesn't have a shop? 3) Keep pushing yourself. After a while, the tricks and workouts won't seem as hard. That's because you're getting stronger, but don't plateau. S Factor is what you make it, if you want it for the workout, then awesome. If you want it for the female empowerment then rock on, chica! read more

Sometimes I'm all "FUCK YOU I'M AWESOME" and sometimes I'm not. The point of S Factor is that it's supposed to encourage that first feeling. I'd been intrigued by pole dancing for a while (that strength! that grace!) and was happy to discover a pass for two intro classes at S Factor in my Yoga Passbook. (Note: Visit their website for half off an intro class. I wouldn't recommend going to two intros, though, since they cover the same material. In fact, the intro classes are designed for newbies that they hope to turn into members.) S Factor prides itself on several things that make their program different from other pole classes: dim lighting, no mirrors, always dancing to music. They also emphasize every individual's unique form of expression - sounds goofy, but in an environment where you're sexy-strutting across the room or encouraged to touch yourself while splayed on the floor, knowing that there are no judgements is... useful. The intro class was shorter than the listed 2 hours: There was a 15 minute late start, then a long warm-up where we learned several "moves" on cushy yoga mats. The moves are inspired by yoga, except slower and you're encouraged to "explore yourself" a lot. We finally got to the pole work, getting comfortable moving around the pole and practicing one trick (we did the "firefly" spin, which was lots of fun). Lastly, you learn a dance routine, incorporating many of the moves from the warm-up. During the final 15 minutes, your instructor and another "ambassador" perform a pole&dance sequence... and then the lights go on and they discuss membership/pricing. Did I feel fulfilled and empowered afterward? Not entirely... I didn't break a sweat! More importantly, the enjoyableness of the class is really dependent on your fellow students. Doing this with a group of friends would be more fun than with strangers. I felt like some of the other women in the class were more easily embarrassed or tired, which (not their fault) did not help the vibe. But our instructor, Chelsea, was awesome. It would've been easy for the experience to verge into shaming/objectifying/heteronormative territory, but she never suggested that anyone was dancing for someone other than themselves. S Factor's studio is clean and much like a yoga studio, except instead of yoga gear for sale in the lobby, there's a wall of lingerie and other conventionally "sexy" things. Our class was held in their largest room (5 poles) and there were only 6 students, but since pole time was so limited and we were asked to pair up either way for half of it, it wasn't a huge advantage. If you sign up for membership, you can either take one-off classes, or join a series where you advance with the same group of women week by week. At higher levels, you build in things like strips, lapdances, and crazy heels. S Factor isn't for me, mostly because physically it's a little too slow. But it's great that they deliberately designed a program to be fun, positive, and supportive. read more

It's absolutely a negative star. This review is long overdue. I had booked part of my birthday party here almost 2 years ago. The pole was not cleaned properly (I watched the really tall girl wipe part of the pole and remember saying to myself 'boy is she tall- she didn't clean the entire lower part of the pole. Although the girls had a descent time- I did not. My hand slipped off the pole and I tore my AC cuff. Spend months in physical therapy- spent thousands on doctors, rehab, drugs etc. I contacted them to let them know and they didn't care. Didn't call to see how I was or anything. I recently spoke to a neighbor who had bad experiences there with redeeming classes and today when yet another friend asked me if I would recommend it for her event- I emphatically said NO. I yelp often but can't believe i just am letting others know about my horrible experience. I am sure there are tons of better places out there where they actually know how to run a business. I no longer live in NYC and am in Boston where this chain doesn't exist. I tried one class at SK on 23rd and it was fun, but had two negative factors. The room was too hot so it was hard for me to do moves with clammy hands. They were very anal about wiping the pole constantly cause I was stuck sharing with another girl, so that was a time consuming hassle, every time we took turns having to do that. The other thing is (I know it's part of their philosophy) the lack of mirrors was lame in my opinion. Call me vain, but I like to see if what I'm doing does, in fact, look sexy. Sure, you can FEEL like you look sexy, but when you are trying to learn a discipline and skill, it's good to have mirrors to supplement the instructor so you can see your own form and if you should tweak the move you're doing. I bought the founder's book to practice at home when I get a pole. I personally take issue with the snobby philosophy; like make sure I distinguish myself from ACTUAL strippers, and call pole dancing "empowering" and "goddess blahblah" while looking down on actual strippers in some backhanded way. Let's face it, half the bored housewives, kept women and yuppie uptight ladies who fork out the big bucks for these classes do so to try (hopefully not in vain) to hold their husband's sexual interest and prevent him from going to the ACTUAL strip club. It's kinda genius, really that SK is cashing in on female insecurity; she's artfully disguised it as empowering etc.... I personally prefer to trim all the bullshit corporate image-building or whatever, and just work a damn pole with a teacher who has no qualms or shame saying she's a qualified teacher because she is or was an actual stripper. I think real strippers are more interesting, anyway. SK mostly makes you sign up for blocks of classes instead of a la carte. That isn't the best for girls on a budget (which I very much was in NYC) and having to fork out several hundred versus forty-ish for one class can feel daunting and be a deal breaker. I prefer a la carte classes, basically because schedules change and conflicts arise. I'm sure SK does this to ensure they make more money by collecting larger chunks. On the plus side, SK has fun merchandise and I scooped up some cute short shorts and tank tops to wear for future classes in Boston. It's smart of them to have the merchandise right there, especially if you come straight from work or something without a change of clothes. read more

I am NOT an S woman. I'm an actual athlete. First and foremost, this is an exercise class. It was shocking to me that the instructors (while bendy and acrobatic) have zero knowledge of anatomy or sports training. The class started with introductions and addressing any injuries person by person. After extensive reconstruction surgery my knee is held together by screws, and since they were addressing this early on, I felt I'd be in good hands. Not so much... The warm up started on a mat so kneeling wasn't a problem. The humping the ground/sexy crawling time later on was a bad idea. I threw in the towel with the spin on one leg around the pole part. When I told the teacher that my knee flat out couldn't do those things, she looked at me like I had three heads. No modifications, no alternatives, no suggestions. I then became "that difficult girl" in class that couldn't play along like everyone else. I'm well aware of my limits and how to live with my injuries. This class could really be hazardous for someone with less exercise experience. read more

************************* MY 200th REVIEW ************************ Read many reviews thru Yelp and Groupon had a special Intro class for a good price to try!. 3 of my girlfriends and I joined on a Saturday afternoon. Signed in (receptionist was very friendly and helpful). Filled in my information and Signed my life to them. Sat and waited about 10 minutes before the class began. Came into a nice spacious Room with 5 Poles surrounded and the smell of a strong ALCOHOL and air conditioning. Lights were dimmed and 2 professional class teachers were greeting us and tell us to be comfortable. The INTRO Class consist in 2 hrs total of mix of Yoga (1 hr) following by the techniques,8 levels of Pole Dancing classes they were offering. They also gave us a very sexy S walk and couple of other Sexy moves. Aside from that they gave us about 10 minutes of Pole Dancing (lesson 1) that I can even ROCK at the Bars. At the end the both trainers showed us what they've learned and what they can do with the pole aside from what you see in the strip clubs. (They were soo flexible, that they were upside down, bridge sculpture while holding the poles) It's a different way to work your body, make your body feel Great, sexy and motivates you. I really enjoyed it, But the only NEGATIVE about this place is that classes are scheduled (not that convenient). So if you take a class on Wed. night, then you have to do that in 8 consecutive weeks. If you miss a class, then it's a pain in the butt to make up for it. (From what I've heard). So you either have to have Time to do this, or don't even bother..... Prices are a bit high, but they are very professional instructors and also very convenient location (you know Manhattan is pricey to rent out a HUGE and CLEAN space like that). PS... I'm still sored from my intro class (Arms, Neck, Butt, Legs, specially my ABS, it's been day 3!, and Imagine if I play with the pole for more than 10 Minutes???? PS2..... I recently went to the intro class here. I wouldn't call myself an S woman but I can see what they are so excited about. First and foremost, the intro class is NOT like intro classes at other pole studios. It is not meant for you to drop in, learn some pole tricks this week and maybe come back next week to try again, maybe with a different instructor. No, it is meant for you to get a taste of what S factor is like. If you like the way they approach pole dance and want to learn it, you need to take a series. Some things: - the nicest studio I've been to. Clean, spacious with a real waiting room. Love the dim lighting. -No mirrors in the studio so you aren't so focused on how you look (they aren't). -The longest intro class I've been to... but you're not spending most of your time on the pole. - The instructors are women who enjoy pole dancing and teaching it to others vs. dancers/performers who teach pole. Not that there's anything wrong with the latter, but if you're like me you may relate more to the instructors here. - if you are looking to learn tricks or get a lot of pole time you aren't going to find it in the intro class here. Overall I'd give it a shot. I have to say I felt really sexy in this class (they emphasize this) and if I had the time and the money I'd definitely take series classes here. read more

Meh. S-factor was not for me. I wanted to become strong and seriously learn pole dancing, but I went to the wrong place. S-factor is a good place for your very first pole dancing lesson, because they really do make you feel comfortable around and on the pole. However, they combine pole dancing with lots of floorwork and lapdance routines, which is something I would have rather skipped in favor of learning more than the mere 3 spins in lesson 1. If you're looking for a serious fitness class, go to NY Pole. S-factor courses are too slow and I felt I wasn't learning enough or becoming stronger. I took an intro class last night because I had a groupon. I was upset about the 48 hour cancellation fee because I was not going to be on time, but I'm so glad that I trudged through the rain and wind and nastiness. They were doing introductions when I got there so I didn't even miss any instruction. I just wish classes weren't so expensive!! I loved: -class size (about 17 in an intro, higher levels are much smaller) -music (I almost stole the instructors Ipod!) -the set up of the studio (dim red lighting, 5 poles, overstuffed love seats and couches to practice the lap dance, and lots of floor space) -the atmosphere (no mirrors=no judgement, not even self judgement. women often come in groups but i was there by myself and felt totally encouraged and comfortable with the bends, splits, and gyrations) -the work out (my legs, abs, and arms are like whoa right now) It was such a great 2 hours, and I felt like all the junk they talk on their website about empowerment, self-love, and whatnot, they actually practice it. Coming out, I felt the same way I feel after a great yoga session. And it was so fun! I am seriously contemplating spoiling myself a bit and taking classes regularly. read more

Very expensive but I didn't love the classes. A lot of time was spent warming up, so for a while it felt like a yoga class. While I understand that a proper warm up is important in preventing muscle injury, when the class itself is not so long you start to feel like you are wasting valuable pole time. I already had pole experience when I took my first class there, but I could see how this place could scare a beginner. The "cult" reputation they have was pretty much true. If my high school gym class had poles involved, I'm pretty sure it would be similar to the atmosphere at S Factor. There were lots of cliquey girls who clustered together and an overall bit of coldness towards unfamiliar faces...almost like some kind of weird sorority (complete with a whole assortment of slightly cheesy apparel and other merchandise). It's definitely not the worst place to learn how to pole, but I'm not crazy about it. Try NYPD, as mentioned by another reviewer. Prices are better and the girls are a lot nicer. read more

i completely agree with Sarah G. The studio is set up really tastefully. The instructors are really warm and encouraging, no matter how silly or dumb u feel/look. yes, there is a little boutique set up in the lobby if you want to purchase a few items, but by no means are you under any pressure to get anything. it's there for people who are less comfortable buying that stuff elsewhere. and dancing barefoot vs. sky high heels does create a different feeling. i participated in a bachelorette party here and that's how i got hooked. i was looking for a diff kind of exercise routine. yeah its a bit pricey, but it really does leave u feeling empowered. and hell yeah i'm glad to be a woman. haha and no, i'm not brainwashed. I end up in a great sweat after the first hour of pilates/yoga-styled stretch routine. i really am more flexible now. it's fun, the other students are friendly, and nobody is judgemental. it's a great place to let her loose. staff is friendly and accomodating. plus, the instructor sends weekly emails on updates about the class and what to expect. no surprises here! only downside is that it's a pricey workout. but highly recommended! :D read more

I was in New York for business and decided to stop by at S Factor to see if I could try out the boots I saw them selling online. The studio is REALLY nice, clean, with several private rooms and the facility on 23rd street has a shower. But the classes are Sheila trademarked and you can't drop in on a level 5 if you've never done a level 1, so I didn't sign up for any classes. From the video that was playing at the counter I can see that their style of pole dance is very different from any other studio I've been to (and I've been to plenty) so, the class series might be worth taking when I have a lot of extra money, time and patience. There are two things I loved, loved, loved about this place: Their retail store where you can try stuff on before you buy it, and the ladies who work there. What great service! Each person I dealt with (three in total) were the loveliest, most helpful, friendly women I've ever met! The girl who was stocking the retail store went and found lots of different boots for me to try, suggested a few costumes to try, and called the other studio in midtown to see if they had the top I wanted in my size. AND, after discovering that I was from out of town and only there for the day, had the checkout girl give me the 20% discount they were running on all boots the following day. How nice is that? The last lady I spoke to, at the midtown studio is an experienced poler and very friendly. Like I said, even if I don't have the patience, money, or time to take the class from level 1, the ladies who work here are so nice I considered it much more than I would have otherwise. And, the girl who checked me out let me have a tour of the 23rd St. facility and.....it is NICE! Very nice! read more

It's definitely a lot of fun, but if you're a woman with self-respect and a brain that you actually use to think complex thoughts, then you'll see right through S Factor's claim to female empowerment. This is NOT about female empowerment--it's about learning how to please and attract men. And really if you need this to please or get a man, you've got a whole other set of issues. I won't deny that it's a good workout--it certainly can be. And it can be fun, too. But it also gets quite nasty at times. Taking your clothes off and grinding against a pole or another woman sitting in the lap dance chair (oh, yes, that's what happens) does not sound like female empowerment to me. I'm all for it--but call it what it is. This is not about fitness; it's about doing the nasty. I mean, seriously, I had one instructor at the Chelsea location (let's just call her S) who got so into her erotic creature routine that I now know her shaving preferences in places I never wanted to see. I went to an intro session for a bachelorette party. it was fun and at the end we all got a free DVD (supposedly worth $35) and a coupon...I never watched it but I wondered how I could do any of those things without a pole anyway.. The experience was $65 I believe. Most of the lesson was focused on warming up. The lap dancing lesson was cute but nothing great. Also, they were holding another bachelorette party next to ours, I guess this is a popular spot for parties. I also didn't like that they took my email address and spammed it like crazy. read more

What you will gain from this studio: - learn how to improvise in your dance. I love the moving meditation part of their upper level classes as you learn how to listen to your body and move/dance freely. - an encouraging environment where you will gain confidence in yourself, your body, and your movement. - a chance to explore sensuality and how your body can express that. I would recommend this studio. However, after 3.5 years of going here, I definitely have felt like I've reached a plateau and need more of a fitness/strength challenge. The most empowering thing I've ever experienced in my life was when I gave birth to my son, naturally (i.e., without any drugs or interventions). If that doesn't make you feel like you are a superwoman who can conquer anything, nothing will. That said, I always tell people that the SECOND most empowering moment in my life was the first time I went upside down on the pole at S Factor! I am SO not kidding!! As a 49-year-old woman with a family and a successful career (and, hello, a brain and self-respect - LOL!), I think that Sheila Kelley has done an amazing thing. She managed to take something that the average, smart, not-perfectly-bodied woman never thought she was capable of and made it attainable and exciting and fun. To say that it's about pleasing men is such a disservice and, really, missing the point. Sure, if you want to please a special someone, it's not a bad thing to have in your pocket. But I think S Factor is actually feminism at its finest. You literally have one of those 'I am Woman (or Womyn), hear me roar' moments every class. It's really about challenging, discovering, celebrating and pleasing YOURSELF! Not about anyone else. Each session encourages me to dig deeper, to revel in myself and melt away all my self-criticisms and just get lost in the music and the dancing. The curriculum is kick-ass. You start slow and build on the skills so that when it's time to do the more advanced tricks and inversions, your body has worked up to it. The movement is beautiful, utilizing some yoga, some Pilates, some ballet, but all in a very fluid, feminine way. And, the community is totally amazing. I always say that S Factor is like a sorority for really cool women (I was never in a sorority, as I was too damn independent, so I guess here's my chance?). You may be able to take pole dancing at more places now, but from what I've heard, you don't get the camaraderie that S Factor is really about. I believe that wholeheartedly. So, yes. It's about fitness (because it IS a killer workout) and it's about empowerment. It's about learning to love yourself just the way you are. And it's about sisterhood. But I have to add that sitting in the lap dance chair is totally optional, as is everything at S Factor. read more

I signed up for their 8 week original series package program and am amazed at how quickly my body got toned and in shape. It seems expensive but once you start taking classes, it is totally worth it. Took an intro class here and I LOVED it! It was not what I had expected at all. The instructor was super friendly, and knew what she was doing. We started off with some warm-up yoga positions, and sultry cardio moves. It was all so much fun. The pole part was the best, of course. They taught the basic spin really well, and pretty much everyone in the class was able to do it by the end of class. Very clean studio, and really nice and new mats! The only thing is that the course is pretty pricey and require a lot of commitment since they are recurring weekly classes. read more

I dont have enough disposable income to be an S woman but I did enjoy the class that my Living Social voucher allowed me to take. Things that make S factor unique from the other pole places Ive been to: The class begins with a warmup which includes some stretching and some light ab work. While still being sexy, its more intense than I expected. I needed that and chances are you do too. Most other pole studios either have no warmup or a very superficial one. There are no mirrors in the classes & the lights were very very very dim. This worked for me because the class was more populated than other studios and the dim lights kept people focused on themselves as opposed to noticing how much better (or worse) the other women looked in comparison. They email the hell out of you. Unsubscribe if you want but you will still get a random "we miss you!" email from time to time. They even called to make sure that I was sure about not signing up for more classes. You can participate in some sort of S-Factor work-study program to subsidize your class payments, which is evidence that its pretty expensive. read more

S Factor is a great place to lay back, relax, and get sexified! They take all the akwardness about what people think about pole-dancing and truly prove it's an art. After taking the class I commend those who do this for a living because it is NOT easy people! Forget the sex-appeal, this is a full-on total body workout! Went there for an introduction to pole dancing. THe class was small and very detailed about their services. The instructors were patient and very skilled and flexible dancers. The place is nicely decorated and the staff are very professional. The space is clean and large but there are no mirrors in the studio. I would've love to look at myself while learning the moves. It's phenomenal the way they teach you how to connect with your erotic creature and how to dance slowwww like honey. I'm a part of a Level 6+ class. I "grew" with S Factor since Spring 2007 and my first teacher was my guide most of the journey. She taught me how to be strong and powerful. Then a new gem had me connect in a different way and my EC exponentially grew ten-fold. Yes, it's expensive compared to the other pole studios BUT it's worth every penny. (I even pay $196 on top of the session rate in commuting fees). Why else would I stick around for 2.5 years? It built up my self esteem AND made me a better dancer outside the studio. I also built a lot of stamina that is helpful in other aspects. If you're not looking for a whole new world and just looking to learn pole tricks, dance typically fast/hoochy, pole accents, etc, then try elsewhere. IT IS NOT THE SAME. I highly recommend staying for a few sessions or at least finishing your journey at Level 6, where your improv dancing is more in depth. You'll feel the waves of the music rather than the beat. You'll feel more beautiful inside and out. AND you'll learn how to embrace about your flaws. The NYC studio is the best studio out of pretty much all 7 facilities. Tall ceilings, chic decor, dark atmosphere, nice little boutique area, large bathroom/locker room, etc. I signed up for a Level 1 session with my friends... BLIND. Never took an intro or class beforehand. It was probably the best move I've ever made. S Factor filled a hole in my life and I am thankful for such a wonderfully supportive class and teacher. I am currently a S women and will be one for the rest of my life. The studio itself is spacious, beautiful and welcoming. The inventory is kept in stock and the staff is friendly. The classes themselves, depending on their level, offer more than their self described attributes on their website. What these classes are... are two hours dedicated to feminine movement, whether that's via the pole, the floor, the wall, a chair or you simply kneeling or standing. It's about embracing your body and exploring your sexuality and sensuality. The teachers do a mighty fine job of explaining it, teaching it, demonstrating it and helping you get there you self. Speaking of the teachers, I've experience three different ones in the eight months I've been a student. While they all ascribe to the same S philosophy, they are different and unique. Sometimes there's focuses are different from one another but I have never had a bad experience and I've gone weekly since October 2010. The cost for the average person may seem high and it is why it took me 2 months from my intro class in August to finally sign on for the courses BUT I realized I was investing in myself. I easily spend that amount on a variety of things from grocieries to traveling to clothes or going out. S Factor is amazing!!! It has changed my life and many women's lives. Once you take level 1, you will definitely be hooked! I recommend S Factor to all women. If you want to feel more confident, sexy, empowered, and strengthen your body and mind, you have to try this place! When you take an S Factor class it is an escape from the rest of the world. You can allow yourself you feel so present and beautiful in your body. All of the teachers are extremely sweet and helpful to their students. Learning how to pole dance is not as difficult as you may think (YOU CAN DO IT!), and S Factor's classes seem to be designed perfectly to help you go from the simpler tricks to the advanced ones. Little by little the exercises and tricks you do will build your strength until before you know it, you're climbing the pole and hanging upside-down by just your legs! The S Factor studios are gorgeous and I love going there. It is a wonderful community to be a part of, and I have made lots of friends from taking classes here. The environment of the S-Factor classes is not intimidating at all. It is empowering to each and every woman if you can just go into it as a new experience and open yourself to it. The style of S Factor pole dancing is different from many...it is BEAUTIFUL. It is all about slow, slow, sensual movement and feeling how the music that you are dancing to affects your body. Also went to the intro class. (trying to prepare for my second coming...) But anyway, I think the main advantage of the Sheila K program is the campy, self-love, pro-women atmosphere. They emphasize loving yourself and the friendships you'll create as you continue through all 6 levels of pole-flying-lap-dancing bonding with the same classmates. And the atmosphere is good even for someone less peppy like myself. The room is dim, classes are small, only women are allowed, etc. That said, 6 levels at about $500 per level is pretty expensive. You're basically paying for the name and the environment, which is totally worth it if you have an extra 3 grand. If not, it may be cheaper to install a pole, buy a video, and rent a friend to lap dance with. read more

I would give this place a full five stars if it wasn't for management. I've been going here for almost five years now and the only reason I keep coming back is because I love the teachers, the ambiance and the camaraderie I get from my classmates. (no, it's not a cult)I've been to other pole studios here in the city and in other cities and I never feel the same or get anything from it as I do from S. If you want the type of pole practice that is more athletically based, then don't come here. S is more of an inward, spiritual journey that you do for yourself as a woman. Don't get me wrong. We do in fact do pole tricks. We even do advanced pole tricks. But, our approach to it is more yogi like. There are no mirrors and there are no lights that are brightly lit so you're not inside a studio staring and obsessing at your imperfections. You leave the world for two hours and you listen to you and your body. Those tricks,whether advanced or beginner, will come not because everyone in the room is staring and you feel weird about not doing it but because your body is ready and when it does execute those tricks, boy, is it beautiful. Also, you feel beautiful. Women of all shapes, sizes and ages come here and I've been lucky enough to bond and progress with all of them. I only wished management was better. I don't even know who the manager is nor have I ever seen the person in all the years I've been attending. Their on line reservation system needs to be better. S Factor does not come cheap and I consider it a mental health investment and physical, too. It is membership only and with it, comes unlimited classes. With their on line system, however, I get wait listed alot if I wanted to sign up for other classes. When a spot becomes available, the system doesn't let you know till pretty much hours after that actual class is already over. Sometimes, the system will let you know hours ahead of time but won't allow you to sign up for said 'available' class. I'm a calendar/appointment freak that's always on the go so I need to know ahead of time where I'll be and when. It's really not fair to be paying this much and not being able to take advantage of the unlimited classes. Change your computer reservation system please! Really, that's my only gripe. The studio itself is clean and big with showers, lockers and a nice lounge area. It has three studios and if I had it my way, I'd be there everyday dancing/flying/spinning away. read more

I took Level 1 at the East Side location. The class was small and the instructor was good, and I had overall a positive experience. They move really slowly, but at least you really learn the fundamentals, which is what beginners need anyway. I'm currently enrolled in Level 2 at the West Side location, and the class is enormous, and the instructor spends a lot of time chatting and doesn't seem to make the best use of our time there. But the workout is still good. My biggest problem with S Factor is the customer service. Ever since I was in Level 1, I've asked to be on a payment plan (after putting down my deposit) and be billed $30 a class. Throughout my time in Level 1, they continuously failed to bill me, and every 3 weeks or so they would tell me my card was not on file -- and they'd slam me with a $90 charge for the classes THEY did not bill me for. Each time, they explained that they'd been having problems with the server, so I tried to be patient and let it go. I'm now in Week 5 of Level 2, and apparently my information is STILL not on file, and they still are not adhering to the payment plan we agreed on. My schedule is hectic and I can't make the same class every week -- yet whenever I do come in, it's the same issue, and I have to stand at the front desk reading off my credit card information for the millionth time, wasting time that I could spend in class. Finally, they have a policy where you can only make up classes when you're enrolled in a series -- once your series is up, you can't make up any more classes. This is fine, except that I just called them up to find out when I can schedule my make-ups, and apparently there are NO other Level 2 classes currently in session -- so the only thing they'll let me do is use my make-up for a Level 1 class that I've already taken!!! S Factor charges $400-$500 per series. That's $50+ a class. It is absurd to pay $50 to repeat a class I've already taken because they only have one Level 2 series in session and their policy prohibits me from using my make-up in the next Level 2 series they offer. I am so frustrated with them that I'm just not going back. Since their system continuously breaks down and they never have my card on file, they can't charge me, right? If you want to get more than 10 minutes on a pole, don't want to share a pole with two other girls, don't want to spend $50/class, and don't want to waste your time with incompetent management, go to NY Pole Dancing. read more

I have taken with SFactor since about 2007. Initially I loved it. It was fun, a great workout and left you feeling fabulous. There were great teachers and the front desk was friendly and helpful. In the last year that has changed. The administration is terrible. It is nearly impossible to make up classes (either in advance or last minute). Classes are over-full and administration is not helpful. The open access may be a good deal for newcomers but in my case it was more expensive and I lost the benefit of my numerous banked make-up classes. Pointing this out to them brought no reaction or sympathy. Although there are still a few good teachers, I am sad to say it's finally the day to leave SFactor as it has become unfriendly, unaccommodating and uninterested in their students' wellbeing. read more

I have taken classes for over a year with SFactor. I will probably never take another class. Here's why: -- Classes are very expensive $480/session and long 2hrs (but you are only probably active for 1.5hrs and time on the pole is too short IMO) -- They recently closed down a studio; all the students are squeezed into 2 studios creating over sized classes that reduces you time with the pole and the teacher -- You can sign out of a class, but you can only access these "make up" classes if you are currently enrolled in a session (essentially pay about $480 to access classes that you already paid for). THIS IS SO BS and is the main reason I will not return. (P.S. Sometimes a class is a forced "makeup" if the teacher is out or it's on a holiday.) -- Come teachers are GREAT; some of the teachers are great pole dancers, but not great teachers; some of neither especially when she is so unfit she cannot demo the moves -- constant technology failures with the online scheduling platform that results in erroneous or inconsistent information =============== I did initially love what S Factor did for me terms of body transformation and improving self confidence. It's a great studio for learning dance movement or if you are the type that needs a lot of hand holding. However, I realized I'm not really into the dancing; I want a more hard core workout and I want MIRRORS in a studio so I can see what I'm doing. A bitter sweet end. read more

I spent a lot of $$$$$$ & some incredibly happy times @ this studio for a few years. Wanted to attend a " riot" , retreat until.................I was approached in public by the father of a S student . I had really believed my privacy was protected in this space. Encouraged by teachers to be vulnerable, explore one's " erotic " creatures only to discover one's actions were being gossiped/ discussed / revealed to strangers. This father believes his child's mental illness is relieved by S factor; " the only relief from her suicidal thoughts ". Well I watched the poor child ( way too young for this studio) fling herself around hysterically, bouncing off walls, sobbing from beginning of class to end, indulged by all while other students had to wait while she " recovers" to have their own experience. Week after week after week, a child who cries because she can't decide which Ivy League school to attend, entitlement anyone? Perhaps actual counseling, medication even! Mourned the death of my dog with my S sisters, it changed my experience of grief, always grateful for my S sisters in those months. My CONCERNS for this girl were real, I brought them to " admin".
