SO, I felt a bit bad about the terrible review, however, it is all true. This guy made me a nervous wreck. He still did not recognize me after 15 years of being his patent. II had to explain to my current doctor why I need 2 prescriptions for the same medications - reason being, I would get super nervous about being forgotten about and have to go the weekend with no medications. With 2 scripts, I always was able to fill one of them on time. On multiple occasions I would be sick and have to call off work because he forgot to call in my meds. When I finally did get hold of him, he would slam the phone down on me, yell at me and maybe forget again or have some dumb reason as to why he did not call my meds in. Since then, he has retired. The reason I am following up is because I feel he may have been struggling with dementia or maybe even Alzheimer's. I wish him a good retirement. He did turn me on to anxiety meds that actually worked. This changed my life for the better. So I am appreciative. read more

It saddens me to see the negative reviews that are quite frankly, libel. We can all have opinions but to call Dr. Greenberg names without any facts or mentioning at the very least "my opinion" is disgusting. Dr. Greenberg spent a considerable amount of extra time with me on our first meeting and truly was interested in my life, my goals and took time to understand me. I've had pretty good Doctors in the past (and some horrible ones) but Dr. Greenberg has been the first Doctor to truly see that a treatment plan is individualized to everyone. I am a go-getter and very ambitious. You only live life only once and I try to make the best out of everyday. He understood that and is helping me find balance as well as not judging me for being someone who is always looking for the next level of success in life. He told me exactly what I needed to hear but in a kind and truly caring way. I'm grateful to have met him. The reviews from others are mean spirited and in my opinion, not trustworthy. Why? Well, look at the reviewers profiles. Most of them have 0 Friends, a couple reviews (if that) and fairly new accounts. I've had my account for several years and didn't just make one up because I was upset like others do. Please do a bit more digging before you take a review from a commenter with no photos, no reviews and no consistenacy what so ever on this platform. The true reviews come from people who have thoughtful reviews and more than just a few because they do this to help others when making a decision on finding quality business', professionals, Doctors, etc. He is NOT mean what so ever! I see him as a Grandfather type (Sorry Dr. Greenberg, I mean it in a good way don't be upset, haha!) in the sense that he is full of life experience, knowledge and genuinely wants you to do well. Your experience is also dependent on you though. You have to want to make good choices and want to have a life with goals and be able to see how you want to use the help given. For those who wrote about him just handing out scripts, it sounds more like they were looking for scripts. You can't always blame Doctors, especially if you go with the intention to deceive them just to get scripts. We are adults and if you go in with that mindset then you are to blame because he isn't shoving nothing down your throat. Everything has it's pros and cons. Dr. Greenberg isn't a babysitter. You have to be responsible, be able to tell him if you are having any issues/side effects with medications and be willing to be an adult about things and honest. Dr.Greenberg should report those horrible reviews because they are straight libel. You can have an opinion but you can't straight up assassinate his character. Calling him a drug dealer or pill mill is open grounds for libel. These are opinions, not facts. Also, I didn't get any mean attitude or rudeness from him at all. I think he just sees through peoples intentions and he gels well with people who have a plan, have goals and want to live a good life with less stress and more happiness. Best Psychiatrist in Chicago and I walk out of every appointment feeling energized and with a positive mental state of mind. He spends much longer than any other psychiatrist I've seen and actually cares and takes an interest in your life. Granted, he is a busy man and very blunt and to the point. He is the most accessible psychiatrist I've ever seen, and literally will pick up the phone most likely 75% of the time you call him....even during appts. However, make it short and to the point or you may get a BYE! (Call ended). Regardless he still is the best and most knowledgeable. Stay away from his wife though...she's not a fan of me and I'm not a fan of people that waste my time...his other assistants are extremely friendly though. read more

I saw this doctor for over 4 years. At times he can appear and genuinely is caring and very intelligent. Many times he was very rude, but more due to just being very busy and not rude like being mean. He is very accessible which is a positive. He Flew off the handle at me several times. But always apologized. Probably not a good choice if you are very depressed. He made me feel very badly a few times. Screamed at me over a few hundred dollar bill (I paid cash.) After all balance was paid he rushed me out of his practice. I got very depressed as a RESULT. But now see an incredible doctor who I gladly pay cash to see. He runs Northwestern Psychiatry. I still think Dr. Greenberg helped me also at times. After my balance was paid I needed a letter from the doctor who saw me at a certain month/year, and it was Dr. Greenberg. I needed a brief letter after I switched to another doctor. It would have helped me obtain 70,000 of my used United Milage Plus miles the company said they would return if my doctor vouched I had the illness I was diagnosed with by this doctor. I basically wrote the letter 3 times and emailed. It's been 9 months and he still won't write the letter. Very disappointed. Unthoughtful. His services should cover this type of basic letter. Dr. Sheldon Greenberg is the most abusive and unethical medical professional I've ever met in my entire 60 years. Read below. YES, he does hang up on you when you try to make an appointment. The so called Doc insists you call him at 8:45 AM or "I can't have a civil conversation." My son and I have been seeing Dr. Sheldon Greenberg for 3 years, but this practice has become nothing short of a quick script writing service. If you can put up with the abuse and you are desperate, help yourself. And FYI per the below pain management testimony, Dr. Sheldon Greenberg is NOT authorized for pain management. He cannot treat and was never licensed for pain management. After 3 years, when our health care provider changed in 2016, I brought my son to see the Doc. It took me 10 days to make the appointment because the day I called, Dr. Sheldon Greenberg hung up on me 2 times. Who hangs up on a patient and tells them that they are only CIVIL to receive phone appointments at 8:45 am????????? Then the doctor punished me and made me wait his 10 day minimum. Dr. Greenberg never once looked at us. He sat in a chair with a coat draped over the back of his chair. He faced the desk and asked abrupt questions in order to write our scripts. I couldn't even see the top of his head. I had specifically requested that my son and I have a therapy session. I was dumbfounded. After my son left the room, I questioned the doctor how he could possibly sit with his back to us and offer treatment of any kind????? The Doc handed me the scripts we needed and stormed out of the room. He stomped down the hall and would not even respond to his wife's call for him to return to address my concerns. Now to pay me back, Dr. Greenberg refuses to cooperate with my son's benefits and requests for medical information. I am reporting him to the Board. Dr. Sheldon Greenberg's actions reflect his use of power over the clients, whom he has treated. and FYI he doesn't have accurate records on any patients. His first question is "What do you need?" without any documented past patient history for reference. I ask you, how can a licensed psychiatrist who knows and has prescribed medications for severe diagnoses, deliberately refuse to comply with requests for information.....when his client pool is so very vulnerable? I wholeheartedly disagree with the negative review given to Dr. Greenberg earlier this year; as a regular patient that saw him throughout my 2 recent years living in Chicago (Aug 2013 - Aug 2015), it seems that review is the "rush to judgement." I would assume the reviewer has not seen him for as long as I have- because if you see a doctor for more than two years and provide such a negative review... well that raises questions in itself... His website is currently under construction, but the Dr.'s resume medical credentials and volunteer service throughout his long career speak for itself... Personally, it took seeing 2-3 psychiatrists prior to Dr. Greenberg that led me to him, and he was the first to properly diagnose and treat my anxiety disorder. I've also recently moved back to the east coast and he's been extremely helpful while I transition to finding a new doctor willing to continue the [successful] regiment Dr. Greenberg has had in place for me... Yes, he can *seem* short over the phone; however, that's because he almost-always answers the phone- especially if a patient is calling for help- but he speaks quickly/briefly so as to not waste time if he happens to take that patient's call (like the call(s) placed by the negative reviewer?) during another patient's appointment. I've been on both ends of the situation on multiple occasions and never had my feelings hurt by it, nor felt as if Dr. Greenberg was being deliberately rude [as is seemingly implied]... As far as the side effects go, it sounds to me like the Dr.'s instructions followed the proper legal protocol for such a situation. If there are *severe, physical* side effects present from medication, it seems reasonable that they often need to be treated by a general physician or specialist in internal medicine- not a doctor who specializes in neurological matters, regardless of who prescribed the medication... At least for people with the same "illness" as me, I would recommend Dr. Greenberg every time... Please research the medical law regarding one's illness/disorder and take a look at the bigger picture (if you have one) before slandering the reputation of a good man in a public forum. read more

I first went to see Dr. Greenberg after, at only 43 years old, experiencing complications from pneumonia that led to septic shock, a stroke, a coma, and other issues. I was given a very slim chance of survival. The good news is that I survived and Dr. Greenberg, who has seen my wife for over six years as a therapist, became an unbelievable source of professional support as I coped with physical recovery after being ravaged by illness. He is terrible on phone calls. He will interrupt you constantly and hang up on you if he feels the conversation is over, even if you're mid sentence. And this is just me trying book an appointment! He won't even look at you during the appointment either, and acts like he's annoyed that you're even there. For me personally, he prescribed medication that was way stronger and double the amount than what I asked for, and he even included a new medication that I did NOT ask for. In fact, 3 different refill appointments I had with him he prescribed me something new. It's like he was trying to meet a quota. I'm honestly shocked when reading positive reviews of him on Yelp. Over three years from my last visit, I was inspired to go back and review Dr. Greenberg, thanks to recent hashtag trend- #fatsidestories. In these stories, people share how they were "fat-shamed" during medical visits, even when the visits had NOTHING to do with their weight. From the beginning, Dr. Greenberg brought up my weight at visits. He pushed diet pills on me (not thinking about how they could affect anxiety, I guess). Then, I had major issues in my relationship with my spouse. When I told Dr. Greenberg, his immediate response was, "Do you think it's your weight?" No other question. First remark. I have shared this story numerous times, including with mental health professionals. Everyone is appropriately appalled. Dr. Greenberg should not work in the mental health field. He basically told me I had a plethora of other issues besides the depression I was having and I wound up on a bunch of anxiety medications, a crazy dose of anti depressants, and became a zombie for several months. He then told me, after I became physically dependent on several medications under his care, that he "could no longer treat me" with no explanation or heads up or warning at all... so now I'm about to go through uncomfortable and potentially very serious withdrawal on a bunch of medications I am dependent on and I'm scared shitless and very confused. I went to see him for a work related situation and upon seeing him the first time, he received and took 2 phones calls and was answering text messages while talking with me. He just seemed hurried and I really did not know if he was paying attention to me or the person on the phone. Dr Greenberg was also very very quick to medicate me which really concerned me since I have blood pressure. I asked if what he was giving me was ok for my condition and i also asked him to contact my Primary doctor and he was not able to answer the question and my doctor was never contacted. Dr Greenberg also told me that he was going to do one thing and then when my insurance company contacted him, Dr Greenberg did and said the exact opposite. Dr Greenberg denied that he told my insurance company what they said his opinion was but when I appealed Dr Greenberg again told the insurance company the opposite of what was talked about in our sessions. Just a very poor experience and the exact reason that I have never up to this point and will never see a psychiatrist again. read more

I can probably see why this doctor has so many glowing reviews on Google. If you like your pep-me up drugs without much discrimination to your actual well-being, this is the place to go. But to me this is exactly what's wrong with medicine today. It's creating more problems rather than fixing existing ones...how the hell do you think the opioid addiction epidemic happened? I see the same problem with stuff like Xanax, Klonipin, Adderall, etc. Not my problem if you need to over-Medicate yourself to get thru your day, but I actually think you're doing yourself a disservice in the long-run. Was it Jung who said, "neurosis exists in the absence of actual suffering."? I'm not saying you shouldn't need or get meds but it feels like some of these docs hand out the quick fixes, the like candy drugs to shut up patients and create an instant gratification rather than listen. I'm not one of those people that wants to get 50 things done at once. I just want to get back energy lost to possible depression. I feel like sometimes psychiatrists and drug companies are laughing at us behind closed doors. I was recommended to see this doctor by clinician that I see for fibromyalgia. I couldn't quite get over the bump & slump I was feeling, so I was recommended to see this doctor for treating depression in conjunction with fibromyalgia. I'm still skeptical of the fibro diagnosis & have since ceased seeing that practitioner. I was already on non-opioids for pain for fibro & stimulants for the energy but I was left feeling sleepless & un-focused by meds for fibro. I was given both adderall and Ritalin by this doctor and told to take them in conjunction with nuvigil for fibro. My fibro doc was actually surprised by this but didn't express much beyond that (I did tell him I stopped taking both & he said not to take them with nuvigil) because I'm sure he didn't want to seem he was questioning another doctor's practices. I took the adderall exactly twice and it left my mind racing and me anxious. I tried the Ritalin and didn't notice much other than a lack of appetite which made me drop weight rather quickly. I really didn't feel like this doctor was giving much credence to what I feel is change of life related. I've found this often the case with many psychiatrists dismissive of some women's mental health in relation to hormonal cycles. I'm grateful I don't lean towards addictive behavior because I feel like I would've been lost further & bought into the adderall etc stuff. read more

I couldn't agree with Daniel more about Dr. Greenberg. I didn't get a sense at all that he was caring, empathetic, or was even listening, because he was so busy interrupting with an arrogance that, for a man in his profession, was shocking, insulting, insensitive, and extremely unprofessional. I don't know how he got a license to practice medicine and be in psychiatry, which involves empathy, compassion, an astute grasp of the issues, and not a way to boost his own ego and bank account. If you can stand to be in his company for long enough to get a script, he will happily oblige you, and irresponsibly, and can be on your merry way and he can cash your check. Don't send your son or daughter to him for complex problems of a sensitive nature, which should only be trusted to someone who actually cares. I can't say enough terrible things about him. He is on his phone, instead of devoting his time and attention to his patient, impatient himself, abrupt, condescending, rude, and so unpleasant that I could go on and on, but I think you get the point. Think twice before going to him, or sending a loved one. His bedside manner is subpar, employees at McDonald's are friendlier. He deserves a -0 rating, if there was such a thing: and, in his case, there should be. Don't waste your time, money, and self-respect letting him get you in that room with him, and certainly expose your children to him if they are vulnerable, trusting, and really need his help....not his drugs, and such flagrant over-the-top, excessive prescriptions, barely knowing the history, psychological, and/or physical, of the patient. read more

I'm not sure why Dr. Greenberg thinks it's a good idea to berate, threaten, degrade, and all around scream at a suicidal person with no sense of self-worth, but he does. Thankfully I didn't kill myself while under his so-called "care," but I did try. I ended up committed to the psych ward, and as a result, I started seeing a new psychiatrist and finally got some real help. Dr. Greenberg has many pro's but also a couple cons. Pros: Exceptionally educated/smart man... psychiatrist with an addiction treatment specialty. I've never had to wait more than a couple days to get an appointment and he is additionally very good about getting back to his patients via phone/fax/etc. He was able to recommend medications for my personal needs with clarity and accuracy. He rises to the occasion if you are having an emergency - he will always squeeze you in if its important/urgent. Cons: He is very "short" on the phone and occasionally in person as well. Do not be discouraged, I've learned that this is just his mannerism. I am not sure if he has a huge case-load or he just likes to rush through conversations and/or keep it brief but I've found it slightly off-putting at times. In addition I had a medication that required "Prior Authorization" which means he had to give the green light to my insurance company in order for them to pay for it. For prior authorization requests he only responds if the insurance company and/or pharmacy faxes him. He will return the fax immediately but he will not call the insurance and ask for that to happen - that will be your job which can (depending on your insurance) be a pain in the rear. Often your pharmacy will assist in this process. Overall, the positives far outweigh the minor negatives. I would recommend this doctor to a friend in a heartbeat and I have many times in the past. He truly wants to help his patients - often giving out coupons to reduce the price of some medications or giving healthy referrals for activities like yoga, meditation and so forth. His office is covered with pictures of his family and his achievements which can give a good and accurate portrayal of Dr. Greenberg from the moment you step into his office. Reading the negative reviews about Dr Greenberg is the main reason I am submitting this review. I have seen Dr Greenberg for several years. Not once have I regretted my decision to see him in all those years and when my wife and I felt our eldest daughter and then later our youngest daughter would benefit from seeing a specialist, we did not hesitate to have them see Dr Greenberg. Dr Greenberg is a medication management Psychiatrist which means exactly that. He diagnoses a patient, if necessary prescribes medicine or medicines that may help the patient and sees that patient monthly to manage the medicines he/she has been prescribed. This could mean trying a different medication, increasing or decreasing the dose of the medication or continuing the medication as originally prescribed. Along with prescribing medication for my eldest daughter, Dr Greenberg decided that she would benefit from seeing a Psychologist. The Psychologist is the Dr who gets to the root of the issues that might be affecting someone to the point of disrupting ones life. They do this by listening to the patient for a longer period of time and they provide insight into how, along with the medications prescribed, the patient might work through the issue or issues. There may very well be a Psychiatrist who does therapy sessions, but for the most part they are far and few between. Psychiatry has evolved beyond that practice likely because of the great number of medicines that are available to mental health patients these days unlike the handful that were available 20 years ago. I would think that long before 10 visits went by, the reviewer who suggested Dr Greenberg retire, should have known this. Also, to the reviewer who complained of Dr Greenberg's phone manners. I do not know many Doctors who answer their own phone calls. Would you prefer Dr Greenberg not answer the phone during the day when he is in with a patient. Try seeing this from the other side. I have been in session with Dr Greenberg and someone calls. He politely excuses himself from our discussion and based on his voice I can guess what the person on the line is doing. If you're calling to schedule an appointment and he gives you his availability, choose one of the times he's given you. You should already know when you're available. Don't make him and his current patient wait while you check your schedule. His voice mail message tells you the best time to call him and believe me it's not smack dab in the middle of the day. Dr. Greenberg has literally given me my life back! Not only do I have 2 autoimmune diseases (Lupus & Sjogren's) that attack your joints and major organs, including your brain, my entire spine is destroyed! I have stenosis in the thoracic and lumbar regions and 2 weeks ago, I had my 1st surgery for Severe Cervical Spinal Stenosis. But, I also have arthritis in my entire spine, from cervical to sacroiliac. I was bed-ridden until I found Dr. Greenberg! He truly believes that there is such a condition as Chronic Pain Syndrome, Failed Back Syndrome and, if a patient uses their pain medication PROPERLY, it is okay that they take them. He also understands how these conditions can affect someone psychologically and he also treats me for these conditions as well. If someone offered to pay me to leave him, I would REFUSE! I believe in him, trust him and know he is a good Doctor! He is compassionate, empathetic, caring and kind. But, he also does NOT put up with BS from patient's and he knows it when he sees it. Dr. Greenberg has been my psychiatrist for almost two years. Prior to Dr. Greenberg I never found a physiatrist to listen to me, what I was experiencing and more important what was or was not working for me. Dr. Greenberg is an excellent psychiatrist who has always been actively involved, and shows genuine interest during all my sessions with him.
