Shelly's is a great local place to eat. We were taking a trip west on I-44 and heard about this place. It's not right next to the interstate but worth the find. It's small but service is great and the food comes out fast. I had some great biscuits and gravy, coffee was good, one of my friends had eggs SSU and bacon, said it was good. Today was our first time seeing the menu at Shelly's and at first glance things looked pretty decent. I was not expecting too much from this restaurant though, it's just too small, for a full service restaurant. Remember that this place was originally a Dairy Queen from the 1950's. Size is important for a good quality restaurant. The first thing is the staff is nice and friendly attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. The experience of the cooking staff was an experience that was not what I expected but it happens wherever you eat. Sometimes it goes wrong sometimes it's good, the omlet was not cooked properly and still had runny eggs in it. The biscuits and gravy were spot on and my wife's sunny side up was cooked properly. Overall we had a great time at Shell's and they served a great cup of coffee! We will be back to this little place everyone has a bad day read more

Tiny cafe in a tiny town. 95% locals yet you're made to feel welcomed. Patrons told us to grab a seat when we walked in. I got the vibe everyone knew everyone and this is the place for locals to catch up on the latest. Our server was attentive, establishment is not large but works. Food was absolutely delicious. I had blueberry pancakes that didn't even need syrup, son destroyed his bacon and cheese omelet with hash browns and toast, and spouse got ham steak and eggs with American fries. Holy cow! Whatta great place. Community tables if you're a solo diner (like me). It's a tiny town and a slower pace and that was kinda nice. Coffee always full, big portions, super prices, great quality sausage and bacon, terrific biscuits and gravy. And the walls and ceiling are covered in stuff to look at/read. We stayed in the oldest operating hotel on Route 66 located nearby for a night. Before we headed out we had breakfast at Shelly's. Great staff and food at a great price. A lot of character inside and out. Parkings no problem and we plan on stopping by next time we head down Route 66. read more

This is definitely a place where the local people eat and we loved it! Everyone comfortable, chatting and eating good food. I had the chicken fried steak breakfast and it was delicious! The hash browns hit the spot. My husband had a half order biscuits and gravy with hash browns. He had a soda and me, I needed my coffee. Coffee was good and we never had empty cups. The sign that reads, "Where friends gather and strangers are made to feel welcome," is a bold faced lie. Passing through on our way to St. Louis, we greeted the staff behind the counter when we arrived. It was crowded, and we appreciated a departing patron's offer to take their table. We knew they'd see us because the server passed by our (uncleared) table twice and made eye contact. I asked the location of the restroom, made a pass through the kitchen to use it, and thanked every staff person I saw on my back to our (still uncleared) table. After all that, it was clear. We were not going to be served. And now I know what it feels like to be profiled. Don't waste your time or money with these people. read more

If I could give this place more than five stars I would. This was an amazing breakfast! I got the ham and dad got the steak. The biscuits are homemade and huge. The eggs are super fluffy, and the home fries are so good (they call them American fries). We'll definitely be back when we're back in the area! read more

We decided to stop here for lunch to see if it was still Marge's Cafe, but saw it had a new name and new owner. We decided to give it a try. We opted for the burgers. While it wasn't bad, it wasn't anything special. I'm giving it two stars since service was a bit slow. The waitress is also the cook. She was sitting there watching tv and eating chips and dip. I think she even collected money from another table. She also sat there and lit up a cigarette while we were eating. I don't know if there is a smoking ban in Missouri, but I thought it was unprofessional. Not once did I see her go wash her hands. read more

Me my buddy drove 1 1/2 to try your restaurant. When we got there there was no table open as we where leaving a customer offered us there table we knew the table was not clean because the customer had just left. When we sit down the waitress pretend to not know us. Then another customer came in they clear his table and took his drink order. They just refused to acknowledge us. I understand you where busy bit that is no excuse to play favorite towards locals then some one who got there before we did so as of this I will not recommend your restaurant after being so disrespect. The definition of a hole in the wall. We showed up here at 1pm on a Saturday looking for a big breakfast. Shelly's didn't disappoint -- we got biscuits and gravy, country fried steak, eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, pancakes (and some other things that my brain is too fat clogged to remember right now) and it was less than $20!!! The service was nice, the interior was clean, and I didn't leave smelling like grease (I hate when I can smell cooking oil on my clothes). Their coffee was really bad. Maybe because it was 1pm and a new batch had not been brewed in a while but woof, not good. read more

Used to be a Dairy Queen. Small restaurant. Small town feel...because it is a small town. Decorated in Route 66 stuff. We waited quite awhile due to a waitress that had to take a personal call, although other servers were available. People seated after us were finished with their meals before we were served. Well worth the short drive off I-44. When my kids don't like a place it means it has real food. This place has real food. Very friendly staff. I had the cheese omelet with chili inside and on top (special order) and like others' have posted both the eggs and chili are excellent. My wife enjoyed her eggs, bacon and biscuits with gravy. I had a taste of the bacon and biscuits and they were also excellent. read more
