I can't speak to Internet service, but I did want to post that "starter cable", advertised as $28.56 on their website (https://www.shentel.com/shenco/shop/tv/starter) will actually be at least $50, due to the following fees and taxes: $0.59 Copyright fee $1.99 / per DTA converter (so this is without a cable box) $4.58 State Comm Tax $16.10 Broadcast TV Surcharge This last one is a killer. They list it as a Tax in their summary but it is not a tax or a fee mandated by any government entity. It is strictly a surcharge that they choose to impose to mask the true price of their cable offering. Big cable companies have been sued over these practices. You can negotiate with Dish to get almost the same price and a lot more content. read more

Shentel is absolutely hands down the worst.. Several months ago the power company dug up our FiOS cable. We called shentel to come repair it. Over a period of at least two months they would come do a little and leave. Finally a third person came dug up a hole to splice the line and left the hole. I called several times to get someone to come back and fill the hole in. My kid fell inside the hole. I begged and pleaded with them to come back and fill the hole as I didn't want to mess with the junction box they placed deep inside the hole. I finally just had to fill the hole myself. Think about that I paid them for a service A lot of money every month and I have to go out and manually fill in a hole and repair what they created. Not to mention they screwed up my property by digging a deep hole. They have yet to return to fill in the hole. read more

Shentel was good until they recently upgraded to steaming & new equipment. constantly have problems with remotes. mow having to use Tv remote to turn off and Tevo remote for channels etc. Second tv starts where I turned it off when I turn back on or disconnects from input. read more

If you're thinking about Shentel, don't! Spend your money else where. When my internet goes out and it's not a "community outage" it will take a technician 4-5 days to get to us. Lately, we've had so many problems with the internet going out for a night or two and then just coming back on. Do you work from home and rely on internet? I am currently out of service. We have no cable, internet, or home phone. I work during the day and my disabled husband is at home without a phone to call 911 if need be. We can't use our home phone nor cell phone because we do not have WIFI. Today is 6/18/2025 and we have been without service since 6/16/2025. I am told that a technician will not be available until 6/21/2025. That will be 6 days without service. Under the circumstances you would think that Shentel would try to get service connected to our home ASAP. We have been customers with Shentel for 30 years and have received no more consideration than this. This is horrible customer service!!! read more

I've been experiencing internet outages at 5 AM fairly consistently. I've had two this week, and many more over the past few months. I moved to an area serviced by Shentel in June of 2024. Now, March of 2025, I have completely cut any services with them. I switched to another provider and couldn't be happier I did. Should have done it sooner. The list of problems with them is endless but the highlights would be: 1. Price In order for having cable to be worth while for me, I need to be able to view ESPN and sporting events. Outside of that, I'd almost never use it (I stream my entertainment off services like Vudu and such). So that is what I get when choosing my cable TV package: Whatever the lowest level is that I can get that offers ESPN. Well, that paired with their best internet (2GB), I was making a car payment. Not a cable bill payment, a car payment. My price was HUGE. Absolutely not worth it considering the problems I had despite what I was paying. 2. Internet Unreliable and not nearly as fast as they advertise. My internet went out daily, albeit at odd hours of the day (I work weird shifts so being awake when most are not, is not uncommon for me). Sometimes it was short lived, like 15min., other times it was a bit over an hour and in some select instances, my internet stayed unusable for three hours or greater. Considering the price, it should never be out except in extreme cases (major storms and such). By the way, run a speed test on your internet after it's installed. The results will disappoint you and surprise you at the same time. 3. Customer Service The thing that I just couldn't wrap my mind around concerning Shentel was, you have to jump through hoops to pay your bill. Let me say that again so it's very clear what I am saying: You have to jump through hoops to pay your bill. Their online site is clunky and down half the time so no luck there (seriously, their own site is almost always down. I guess the server is working off their own internet or something). Setting up autopay (which they prefer yet.....) is impossible because, it's done on their site. Going to one of their authorized pay sites never works. The paper version of your bill never has the information they need to process the payment. It simply isn't printed on it. In the end, you have to pay by phone, which goes through a third person and thus has a huge upcharge. I eventually found the gold at the end of the rainbow and logged into their site when it was actually up and running. I set up autopay and all that. But I had to do it twice, my information somehow got erased after my first payment (the payment cleared but then, I was magically removed from autopay and had to sign up again. They had no explanation for it). I tried paying directly at their office in my town (it's like, not even a mile from my home) when the service was new to me. Said office is never open when it should be. There are signs on the door stating the building is "Temporarily closed". Those signs never come down. Three separate times I tried paying my bill at the office and the building was locked, not a soul in sight. When I turned my services off, corporate said I could return my stuff there and acted like they thought I was drunk or something when I informed them that office was never open. I went, equipment in tow, and yes, the office was closed. I called them, informed them only to again be talked to as if I were making it up. They danced around it for a while before emailing me a shipping label to send everything in. Which leads to the next golden idol of their version of customer service. Three people have had the exact same problem, not having a place to return their equipment, and corporate resolved it with a shipping label. Problem was, they sent the equipment in only to be told it was never received. That's not coincidence, that's a trend. Quality Poor quality cable TV wise, same as the internet. Serious, if you were alive in the 80's, you will get a sense of nostalgia. It's like you're watching a Tube TV. I do not recommend Shentel on any level. When I dropped their services, it was like a great weight had been lifted off my chest. read more

My neighbor's internet went down on Feb. 15th. Shentel sent a tech out to fix it on Feb. 20th. He ran a new line from the utility pole that both of our cables originate from to their house but, rather than connecting it back to their connection, he disconnected my line and connected theirs to it. I called the Shentel office and described what had happened and explained that I had neither TV cable or internet. I was told that it would be 6 days before they could send a tech out to correct their error. Their tech disconnected my service and they have the gall to tell me that I have to wait nearly a week to have it corrected. Shentel is a joke! read more

There's nothing wrong with their personnel or tech departments (good people). But their equipment and service because of this is sporadic at best. Never great and seemingly almost always down. If you work from home & you enjoy burning PTO due to lack of internet & phone, Shentel is the company for you! If you enjoy listening to hold music & being hung up on, Shentel is the company for you! If you enjoy paying for services not rendered, Shentel is the company for you! While installing fiber for our neighbors, Shentel's workers broke our fence. We called to complain & the rep said that it wasn't their responsibility to fix what they broke unless we were customers. Sadly, we are customers. She was very frustrated to learn that, we argued for about a half hour. They eventually fixed our fence. The internet & phone line go out at least once a month. When you call to complain, first they deny that it went down, then they threaten to fine you if "you caused the issue", then about a week later someone comes out to check it. That tech says it's a problem "down the line" & they can't fix it. In another week, someone from maintenance might go out to fix it. All while you get to pay for services not rendered! When you call to ask for a prorated rate, they first make you wait for a long time to speak to a person, then they ask for your account details, then put you on hold, then ask what the problem is, then put you on hold, then deny that there was an outage, then put you on hold, then tell you it was fixed so you can't complain, then put you on hold, this is usually when they hang up on you but if you're lucky, they keep giving you the run around & putting you on hold for at least another hour before hanging up on you. It's deliberate, if you give up, they win. I wish I could zero stars because that's as high as they deserve. read more

I work a ton, and enjoy gaming when I get a little time to myself, so I opted for the fiber optic plan. 210 dollars a month, and on the 3-4 days I have off in that time, two have had internet outages. For the price go for any other option you have and if Shentel is the only option then try using carrier pigions. Even if you just want to browse Google, it will not work. Under no circumstances sign up for Shentel. My 87 year old mothers telephone through Shentel went out. Tech came out and said: "I don't know whats wrong with it, you should go get a new modem". He never follows up. Mind you she is 87 years old. He left her without a phone and left with no way to contact another person in case of emergency. Let me repeat - she is 87. So, on with the story - she wears an "emergency - help I've fallen and I can't get up" necklace. One night she inadvertently hits it. The emergency service is set up so that they contact the individual before the they come out. Because they could not contact her, the fire department, the rescue squad came and broke into her house before she realized what was going on. She thought it was an intruder and can you imagine the horror of an 87 year old women not being able to call out for help but then seeing a bunch of strange men in her hallway?!? Then I try to explain this to Shentel. No sympathy, no empathy, just - "we have availability next Thursday between ..." at the time that was MORE than a week away. Not to mention the stress caused by the rest of the family who could not get in touch with her. We all took off work to come check on her. Absolutely no help! I have issue about issue with the internet service , 3 techs has been out and hasn't fixed the issue yet , I call tech support EVERY for them to reboot my modem so it will correctly for a couple hours,, also getting unable to connect to internet messages, buffing, loading loading circle , I have 3 devices connect to the service , can't even watch my roku it will stop playing movie and buffer, my PlayStation takes 5 hours to update a game ,,, I would never refer shentel to anyone!! wish I had other internet provides to choice from in this area!! the cable has been up on the pole for 25 years ,, I can't get them to replace it ! tech comes and stays 10 minutes hooks his little meter up and says there is nothing wrong with it !!! Internet goes out. Currently second day in a row where it randomly goes out. If you're in a county that doesn't have the best of options for WiFi shental will be sure to bump up the price for their service. They will charge you a lot of money for crap internet. Also, will attempt to send a " technician" out to your home every chance they get. Why? Because they'll charge you regardless of the problem. Their answer for every problem is the router so they'll recommend you buy their refurbished router. They won't tell you it's refurbished. To figure that out look at the back of the router. I could write a book on the incorrect information I have been given, the many times technicians have been to my home unable to fix an issue, and the unhelpful help desk. The main point is that Shentel is more interested in making sure they get your money than providing a quality product and service to their customers. I have been without wireless since May 9th, it is now over one month later. If I could do 0 stars I would. I have been with them for 3 years only because xfinity isn't available at my address and their internet is horrible! I pay 128 a month for high speed streaming and unlimited data and all it does is freeze up and disconnect all of the time. Xfinity is cheaper and so much better quality. If I could give negative stars or even zero stars I would. Complete incompetence!!! I am originally from NYC and I know what quality internet is for a low cost. Upon moving to Forest VA Shentel has a monopoly in my area if you expect "decent speeds." As with all monopolies they make you pay insane prices for crap quality. $200+ per month for what I got for $50 in NYC and it was perfect quality. Over the past year I have had atleast 10 techs (who are as dumb as rocks, and as useless as a deadbeat) come to my house and do the same thing with no result. The techs on the phone always have a new excuse, so I thought, until they started repeating them. Over the past 3 days I have had complete outages lasting for over an hour. Strangely during the same time. I guess the hamster powering their severs takes its nap at this time. I am a software engineer and I have not seen this sort of incompetence for technology in my life. Once Fios or a better internet provider gets to my area I am jumping ship. read more

Trash! I'm constantly, constantly resetting the router in a desperate attempt to stream some Netflix. They even came out and installed cable. This review is an immediate reaction to not even being able to stream a video without buffering every 10 seconds. The long term reaction is the same. There are no alternative internet providers available, other than satellite, which is even worse in my experience. Very disappointed in this company. Continued issues with phone not working and/or Internet, although we pay 100 plus bux a month. Never know when either is going to work. Continue to send out techs and get a different answer every time. In fact, you have sent out different techs within the same day and each say something different. You would think they would monitor your service at their tech center. I have called in multiple times to that to get help: they pull it up and says "oh yeah this is out or that is out". ????? why am I paying for service that I have never been able to depend on? WHEN THEY CALL TO ASK IF YOU WANT CABLE FOR A DOLLAR MORE A MONTH SAY NO. They lied about cable charges. Told us it would only be a few bucks to upgrade to a cable package with an additional charge of $1 per room. They said the bill total was going to be about $94 per month. We get the bill and its $131.54. Apparently even with the lowest cable package you have to pay $14.99 extra and 60cents per certain channel which they DID NOT tell us about on purpose because they knew we would've said no. Prices are ridiculous. We had about 7 good channels, the rest were infomercials or stuff people dont watch; so I don't understand why it was so expensive. HORRIBLE internet connection as well, never wants to work. We're paying for crap. The free internet thats in stores works better than Shentel. read more

I moved to Radford VA from CT where I had COX Cable with 50Mbps at around 40$ a month with unlimited data. Shentel charges 2x that for 50Mbps with a data cap of only 500GB! i have 2 roommates that are a college student and a teacher that both use the internet for various things. I have various devices such as iPhones, iPads, Macs, AppleTV, and an Xbox One S that gets updates constantly... streaming Netflix and Hulu on most of these devices. well with this data cap of only 500GB we hit or even go over the limit costing me more every month. I looked on Shentel's site and now they have "Unlimited data" oh but thats 30$ plus the 80$ I'm paying already! I also can't get any other service here! I called numerous ISPs and they al say they don't service the area because of Shentel! MONOPOLY!!! NOT HAPPY! read more

I am giving 3 stars because people are nice and professional. Sadly, the employees have to be that way because of the poor service the company provides. Service just went out and unknown when restored. This was less than a month when noone could advise when billing for the data caps would happen. Internet has to be reset every week at least once. TiVo box died within first two years. Appointments have not been kept. Some techs don't know what they are doing. Very poor means of returning equipment. We had to drive over an hour to return. Very disappointed with Shentel. read more

Shentel management I have to wonder if you ever listen to your customers. I have not once heard anything good about your internet service! While we grumble and spend to much time on the phone with tech support trying to fix the problem you guys are earning big fat paychecks and don't seem to care enough to do anything. Someday you will hopefully not have Shenandoah County monopolized and when and if that happens I hope everyone leaves your service. I am sick to death of dealing with tech support and doing all the trouble shooting. After the last ten years or so of calling in to get a trouble ticket tonight this guy says everything is good in his end. Who cares because it's not good on mine! In one year I had 26 tickets so I think I know all the steps to troubleshoot, which by the way should not be my problem. I can guarantee there will be a call made to the public utilities commission which will give you 10 days to respond and have an answer why my service is so bad.
