It doesn't have anything too monumental or special about it, but it doesn't have too to be a great spot! once you get to the end of the trail there's a stream/waterfall that's a great place to sit and enjoy the nature. And climb around on some cliffs as you can see in the pictures. Once you're to this spot you can walk to Johnston shut-inns from there, (11 miles) if you're looking for an all day hike that ends with swimming. Maybe have someone bring a car there first so you don't have to walk all the way back Directions to Taum Sauk can be confusing for someone who has never been, assuming you'll be heading south through Arcadia/ironton, you'll keep going south after those towns for a few miles. Then make a right on CC hwy, it's on a turn and a hill so don't be afraid to pass it up and turn around somewhere, rather than lock em up and cause a scene. After you're on CC hwy eventually there will be a Y in the road, to the left is a tower you can climb. To the right is a gravel road, follow that and it leads to the trail. Big Creek RV park is the best family friendly experience! The kids love to sift for arrowheads and…read moregems at the rock mining station. The creek is beautiful and clear! We enjoy bringing our chairs and sitting in the water while the kids search for crawfish. They also have a pool to cool off in. We grab delicious coffees from their on-site specialty shop and you can get regular coffee or decadent dessert-like coffees. The park is quiet in the late evening hours and is truly a great place to take your family!

There are two major highlights in this park IMO, the highest point of Missouri and Mina Sauk Falls…read more At only 1772 feet above sea-level and within a few hundred yards from the car park, the so-called highest point is somewhat disappointing, but still worth in a Missourian's "be-there-done-that" list. The Mina Sauk Falls can be reached via a 3-mile loop hike, combining the Mina Sauk Falls trail and a short segment of Ozark Trail. The falls are spetacular after a good rain, but shrink to little trickle of water in dry days. However, keep in mind that after a heavy rain or frequent rains, the trail condition can be nasty. Part of the trail essentially turned to creek bed in my last visit a couple of days ago, after a series of rainstorms in the area. Mud and wet rocks can be very slippery so look at your steps carefully.

The staff were extremely warm, welcoming, insightful, and kind. They have a little store with coffee, ice cream, pizza, some other fun beverages, and convenience things. As well as laundry. We went the weekend after Memorial Day so some of there goods were low in stock. But their lattes and breves were so tasty!! They did offer WiFi but you had to pay extra. It was 30 for 3 days for our party. (Included 8 people). The main bathroom/shower house at the store was extremely well kept. You could tell they worked hard to keep it clean. The bathrooms at the pool were pretty clean as well. They had a basketball hoop & sand volleyball. The pool was nice. It's small but heated/cooled so that was really nice. The chairs around the pool were really nice and clean. The pool was salt water which I really liked. They had a huge gazebo with picnic tables & a few little outdoor games and fans. They had a concession stand there that was unfortunately not open. We tent camped in one of the RV spots so we could have electric. It fit perfectly and the spots were so clean and well managed. The space between lots wasn't very big so keep that in mind. They have lights throughout the site so if you have to walk to the restroom it's not to dark but not so many that it was completely lite up and to bright. They also had trash cans every few spots that were keep clean. The one thing I was bummed about was there isn't creek or river access from the camp ground. However the river is very close and a short drive away. I wish I would have gotten more pictures but I'd say for a weekend getaway it's a 10/10 to take your family. Oh and they have a really nice playground. It's more for 5+ year olds but my 1 year old still enjoyed it. Looking forward to coming back.

There was spotty cell signal, but having the place to ourselves was epic! A group rented the cabins across the road from us (part of resort) but they were quiet. Stayed here this past weekend with a group of friends. It was not my first choice in the area given…read moreI have had good experiences floating and camping with Bear Cat before but a couple of people in the group needed electricity so we stayed at here at Deer Creek Campground. There was about 8 of our people set up in the "loud camping area" and myself, husband and one other opted for the "quiet, tent camping" area. I was a bit concerned when I walked to the loud area and past many floats laying on the side of the road that those were the floats we would use. I put it out of my mind. I will say someone told me that this campground had new owners so perhaps they are getting used to some things and plan to make some improvements if they can but I am basing this review solely on my experience. We paid $69 for our tent space for 2 of us for 2 nights and $86 to do the 7 mile float. We all gathered about 9:45am at the office and were taken to the put in for our float. Before getting into my float I noticed it was taking on water but didn't want to be a pain. I should have said something then but both of the 2 man rafts our group had took on a lot of water during the trip. By the end there was really no where for me to sit that wasn't constantly in water and I was VERY ready to get out and get back to the campsite and change into some dry shorts. Other people floating kept making comments about our rafts throughout our trip. All of our groups rafts were under inflated (4 and 2 man rafts). The river was PACKED with people. I think in the past I have been on floats that left a bit earlier though, so that may have been part of it. Once back at the campsite I showered. Unfortunately, so did another large group. I waited to shower (4 stalls) and by the time it was my turn there way so much standing water in the bottom of the stall I considered skipping it all together. I showered as quickly as I could and exited the shower. There were two drains on the floor in the main bathroom area that water was rising up out of. This did seem to dissipate later in the evening when less people were showering but it was gross none the less. I know this is not the campgrounds fault, but they had a neighbor who must have kept their dogs outside all night so despite being in the "quiet" section, I woke up about 20 times in the night due to the barking from the dogs, and some other nature noises (it was by a pond so probably frogs). The campsites in our quiet section we were told were labeled but there was only about 6 sites we could actually locate numbers on so assuming we were probably some of the few over there we kind of just plopped our stuff down in an area we thought seemed about right. I can say that our Porta potty was fairly clean and we did have a water spigot nearby which was helpful. A few bright spots of mention. They had ice and other items one might need available in the store and though I did not opt to use it, they do have a pool on the campgrounds that I am sure people would enjoy, especially kids and people who may not have floated the river. The people running the campgrounds were all pretty nice and helpful. Another note, just about nature, but basically every person that camped in either section of our group found 1 or more ticks on them so they are very prevalent in this area and if you do camp here please be careful, spray and check yourself often! Take the good with the bad. I would have given this place 2.5 stars if I could have.
