Out of town visitor review: Awesome cheesecake. Not a very good "Irish" bar though. Comes across as a room dressed up like an Irish Pub, but doesn't hide the facade of it. Two bartenders. Woman was helpful enough. The guy was a total dick. Refused to even look to see if we needed anything. He was busy doing whatever, as long as it wasn't related to the customer sitting in front of him. She was just "annoyed" that they were busy in a Sat evening, and didn't want to have time to serve. When I say "busy", I mean there were 6 empty seats next to us at the bar before the next person, so I'm not sure they were actually busy ENOUGH to already treat customers like shit, but, hey..... whatever. The cheesecake was 10/10. Come to find out, they don't make it. The buy it from a bakery. Checks out. The only good thing about this place is the thing they get from somewhere else. read more

Wow. Maybe we caught it on a bad day. Came in for brunch / lunch on a Sunday. Two out of three meals were obnoxiously subpar. My wife's three meat omelette was burnt. How do you unknowingly burn eggs? But see the pictures I attached. A deep brown omelette. And the meats were undetectable by taste. My wife never sends food back, but she did raise the issue with the waiter. His response was "Yeah that looked pretty brown to me when I brought it out." WTF? You saw it was bad and brought it anyway? Daughter faired no better. Peel and eat shrimp and hushpuppies. The hushpuppies had been cooked in oil at much too high a temperature, as the outside was done but the middle was literally wet uncooked batter. She asked for more, which came out okay. The shrimp were very rubbery and overdone. We wondered if they had been cooked elsewhere and reheated here. But she didn't send these back after the eggs and hushpuppies.... we were afraid of the kitchen's reaction. Clearly there was an inexperienced or I-Don't-Care cook in the back and we were just about done with it. This would be one star, but my shepherd's pie was good. Not great but good. And the onion rings and fried mushrooms were both good. So two stars on food. And two stars on service because of the brown egg comment and having to ask for refills on drinks. At least he took the omelette off the bill without us asking so he gets the second star. I am asked frequently "who has good brunch?" It's a cozy Irish pub and I'm not saying it's small. It just gives you a big hug. They have some traditional Irish dishes, but they also have 1 million different appetizers. I was not impressed by my Irish coffee, but I like the food a lot they have specials every day and my favorite specialist that discounted hamburgers on Tuesday.! read more

I went this past weekend and it was a good local spot to check out in Forest Hill. The staff was friendly and the drinks were good as well as the food. Banging out whole faves again and MAN, I did not regret it. I met up with a friend after a long week to catch up. They had a live band inside so it WAS a bit loud. I really wanted to sit at the bar but it was PACKED. Not even ONE chair, folks. It was definitely a Friday night in the neighborhood. :) As always, I searched for parking. Fortunately, there was ONE spot open by the entrance of the parking lot next to the the restaurant so I quickly parked and waked in. I made one round around the bar, found no open seats, went back to the hostess, made a sad face while shaking my head, and she kindly led me a booth with menus in hand. I waited for my friend to arrive and once she did, we were so busy catching up that we kept having to turn away the waitress asking for "a few more minutes". I'm sure she didn't appreciate having to walk back and forth but she brave it with a great smile and such a nice attitude. I really appreciated her. We ordered tater tots which were perfectly crunchy. That is very important because tater tots can't be tater tots if they're not perfectly crunchy. I mean. Then I ordered the Swiss burger and fries, along with my customary Stella. :) But of course. Love places that carry my beer. She had the special, spaghetti, which she liked so much, she ordered one for her boyfriend at home. Kudos! The only thing I would ask they do is to upgrade the original bathroom too. That bathroom was so small, my head hit the door when I went to pee. Sad. I did hear about the updated bathroom AFTER using the bathroom (thanks, FRIEND), but I would still like to see this one updated too. TL&DR: the food is not seasoned, it smells, if you return your uneaten meal because you didn't like it, they will still charge you for it. .... When we walked into the place, we were instantly greeted by some weird, bad smell. I don't know if it was the smell of the carpet or what, but it smelled bad, so we wanted to eat outside so we wouldn't smell it. The hostess asked if we could eat outside, but we were told they currently aren't sitting anyone outside (noon on a Sunday). We had a large party, so we were seated in the second half of the restaurant so we could all sit together. I think the best thing we ordered was the ice water, which was probably tap water. I ordered the chicken Caesar wrap with onion rings. The onion rings were 4 jumbo onions that looked really good! I took a bite and was very disappointed that the onion rings' batter was not seasoned at all. It had no taste at all, so you have to dip it in the sauce it comes with. The chicken Caesar wrap has very little Caesar dressing in it so the lettuce was a bit, but I don't like mine over saturated, so I want too bothered by it. A guest in my party had the soup off the day, and it smelled really good! I believe it was chicken and rice. It was pretty good, but was a bit under seasoned. Another guest had the brunch item: pancakes, bacon and hash browns. The had browns were actually crispy potatoes wedges served with sautéed onions. No salt, no pepper, no herbs, zero seasoning. Two guests didn't like their order, so they gave it to the waiter and asked to get something else instead. They ordered a different dish, but the the two returned dishes were still on the bill. They asked the waiter who identified himself as the manager, (Brian or Byron) to take those items off the bill since they didn't like it and returned it. The manager said they do not take returned items off the menu because nothing was wrong with the item and because others ordered the items. He said someone had to pay for the meal. He didn't care that the meal was not up to their standards and that they didn't eat it. I will not be returning here. read more

Deborah and I had a fabulous time at O'Toole's today Sunday March 30th, we were there at about 4:30PM. Zack the hostess seated us where we requested. Susan was our server; she is truly an asset to O'Toole's Restaurant. Susan was very professional and pleasant in helping us to decide between the choices of Pasta dishes that were being given and extra discount Sunday when ordered. Sunday. The Onion Rings to start were huge I could put one on my arm as a bangle bracelet and the dipping sauce for them is superb, We both enjoyed our Cesear Salads, followed by the delicious Spaghetti that we shared Deborah had water, I had water and a beer. First and last. Bartender seemed disinterested unless you were a regular. Guinness was good as usual. Ordered fish and chips and my bad for not listening to bartender about chips. I got homemade potato chips and not American french fries. Fish was overcooked. Coleslaw was mediocre at best. I do wonder what the health dept would think of a bartender taking a bottle of wine either off the shelf or out of the refrigerator and putting it into the ice bin in front of the customer drinking that wine to keep it cool. Very nice Irish pub/restaurant with a large bar and many choices of beer. The food is hearty, delicious, and the portions are generous. The spaghetti O'Toole was really good, as were their crab cakes and steak. Street parking can be difficult, but there is a Truist Bank parking lot across the street that can be used after they close. (First visit) I decided to get breakfast food......thinking it was going to be top notch since it was mother's day. Food was ok, I wasn't sure why the pancakes were crispy. I cut my pancakes as if it was a steak. The bacon strips were the best part of the dish. However the eggs were not as hard as I like them oh well I didn't cook them. The potatoes and bacon were both good. I should have passed oknthe bacon, or asked if it was Turkey or pork.....slight headache from more sodium than my body is use to.... My lunch date is a regularat the location safe to say he enjoyed his food as well. NOW....I am one who remembers the staff more than food when its not knock down delicious. My waitress was so sweet and attentive to all her tables. Her appearance was neat and clean. She spoke with confidence and knew the menu. She was sell spoken and very friendly. I understand why people say this is just a drinking bar, cockroaches and bad service even while sitting at the bar.

My fiancee and I moved nearby and have visited a few times now. Each visit has been great, with pretty tasty food, generous portions and reasonable prices. We brought my extended family on one visit and the broad menu pleased everyone. On our visit today I got the chicken and broccoli Alfredo special which was yummy and my fiancee got the fried shrimp dinner with a baked potato. We both got generous sized salads with our meals. She was a huge fan of the shrimp, which were very lightly breaded and good sized shrimp with no tails. She went as far as declaring it her go to meal from now on. Let me first start off by saying how much I have always loved O'Tooles and spent lots of time there years ago but I now live a 1/2 hour away from there now. I live much closer to the Midlothian location but it's not my favorite and the vibe is so much different than the Forest Hill location. I was bummed and disappointed about how bad the onion rings were and the steak fries were also pretty bad as well. Neither were seasoned at all with any salt and by the time we received our food, it was too late to add the salt that it needed while they were still hot from the fryer. The onion rings came out relatively hard (felt like thy were frozen), not salted and not hot. Our steak sandwiches were good but the fries needed about another minute or two in the oil and needed to be salted as well. However, our waiter was awesome. It was somewhat busy on Saturday night (music playing) and it was later in the evening to eat dinner so we didn't make any complaint about the food because we didn't want to wait for them to be remade. You can do a better job on one of your signature items! Make sure the chefs season food appropriately. read more

Went in for dinner after candlelight concert. Food was meh. The potato skins appetizer was cut into small pieces and dried out. Please leave your potato skins whole for aesthetic effect and moisture. No one likes a dried out potato skin. Spinach salad was OK but begged for hot bacon dressing instead of the run of the mill dressings you get everywhere. Other than that drinks were fine. This Iris vibe pub is a great place to have good food. I was pleased with the chicken salad (house made) and the onion rings have a taste kick to them but wish they were cooked longer. ( just my preference) My waitress was amazing. When I couldn't decide on chicken salad or tuna she immediately said would you like to try it first. Upon bring my food she brought extra napkins ( that's worth 5 stars right there) Another drink was brought to me without me having to beg for it. She really knows her job and is efficient. Working smarter not harder. Her name is Bailey. Give this woman a raise. And if she waits on you show her appreciation and tip well. She was attentive but not annoying. Paying attention to each of her customers without a word. The staff seemed to work well together that's really important in their line of work. First, the service is just wonderful. Our server Nick was amazing, they were so nice and one of the best servers I've had in a while. We went on burger night, which was a great deal- burger and a side for $7 or $8. The beer was great, and the food was good, but could have used a bit more flavor (but hey, it is Irish). Wanting to further broaden my horizons, BFF & I returned to O'Toole's earlier this month. We started with the Fried Mushrooms ("Button mushrooms that are battered and fried served with our house made creamy horseradish sauce"). Amazingly good. I think I could make a meal out of the FM, but I wanted to try more things. I also ordered the small Greek Salad ("Greens topped with feta, black olives, pepperoncinis, tomato, onion"). Every ingredient was fresh and abundant. Next time I'll probably order the large GS. For an entrée I had an 8" White Pizza (Olive oil, garlic, ricotta, provolone, mozzarella, tomato & fresh pesto). I don't recall ever having a better White Pizza. Sizes of O'toole's Pizza are 8", 12", 16". Next time I'll probably order a 16", and take most of it home to feed me for another day or so. Our first time at this restaurant. We LOVED the fried mushrooms. I ordered the 1/2 pound of shrimp - they were cooked perfectly and I really appreciated that the shrimp were deveined and the shells split for easy removal. My husband ordered the Ruben and he really enjoyed it. Our initial server was OK - she was really slow checking back in once we ordered our drinks/app. However, she disappeared and I believe she had worked an early shift and was getting off soon after we came in. The other servers were absolutely on point. The feel I got was that this is a "regulars" type of place, with a lot of repeat customers and definitely a relaxed atmosphere.
