First time here, food was good,server was super sweet, and unfortunately the only server. She was doing an awesome job. Bartender on the other hand basically refused to make my Bloody Mary, even though the server kept asking her for it, but yet made one for a customer sitting at the bar. This is a very unassuming restaurant but everything we ate was sooo good. Wing Dings were a champion, we had to order a 2nd round. We stopped yesterday for lunch. People sitting in the dining area were frustrated waiting for someone to take their order so we decided to sit at the bar. NO acknowledgment from any staff. We sat for a bit patiently. Others came in and were approached by staff. A few times staff appeared to look our way but that was as far as it went. Staffing could have been an issue so that's why we waited patiently. After a bit we just walked out. That will be the last time we venture there. read more

Set on the patio during COVID-19 shared a basket of chicken wings and amazing fries with just enough seasoning on them. The homemade coleslaw was amazing and it went down very nice with a Pompe Indian pale ale ! We will come back sometime just to check out the inside but the food was great and we enjoyed sitting out on the patio on a nice day. read more

The worst service, the waitress had no interest in helping us. We ordered the soup/ salad bar. There was no soup, we asked her and she went to the kitchen, she came back and said it will be out in a little bit. The salad bar was pathetic very little to choose from. If you're looking for "fine dining", keep looking. But if you're looking for dining that is very fine, you've got the right place!!!! Their wing dings are fantastic and they're wing ding platter is more than enough to fill the average person up!! Fun Fact: Shep's will allow you to park your boat overnight for a small fee. We took a river trip by boat from La Crosse and parked our pontoon safely overnight while we stayed at an adorable Inn just two blocks up the road. Great river trip. Highly recommended. read more

We stopped in for lunch today. The waiter gave us menus. As we sat there, he brought food to and waited on other tables by us. The bartender came out from behind the bar and went to a table. Then she cleared two tables while we waited. Between the waiter and the bartender, there was no eye contact and nothing said to us. We left in silence. Also, the windows are extremely dirty. I have to rate the experience before I can submit this. There was no service and no food involved so the rating should be 0 but it has to be 1 star:-( read more

For what it is, it was really nice. It's a standard midwestern bar and grill on the Mississippi River. We were there on a Tuesday early afternoon. Place was pretty dead. Server was prompt, friendly, and did everything a server should do. The burgers were great! We had the Shep's Ahoy burger, which is essentially a bacon cheeseburger with mushrooms on it. My only disappointment was that the mushrooms looked like they were canned mushrooms. Other than that, the burger was great and fresh. Their hand cut fries were yummy, but a little too thin cut for my taste. I'd go back if we were in the area. read more

We have stopped by here a few times just to grab a drink, so I have never felt compelled to write a review based on that. However, we stopped by yesterday for a drink and I couldn't count how many times I heard the F-bomb being dropped, as soon as we walked in the door. I don't typically have a problem with it, I have my own potty mouth. I understand that a lot of locals hang here, they all know each other, etc. However, after sitting there listening to this group for about 10 minutes, I realized that the owner was amongst the group - sitting on the other side of the bar, where his customers are sitting. I was trying to ignore their conversations, but it seemed as though they were offering advice to one of the (very) young bartenders. One of his tidbits of advice was for her to stay away from "n**gers." I was so disgusted by his unprofessional behavior and blatant racism - we could not leave there fast enough. I'm sure the locals think it's funny and acceptable, but for those of us who are just passing through and are willing to give them our business, maybe they should be more considerate and professional....and not racist. Such a great find. We were on a road trip and on a whim headed over the Black Hawk bridge. So glad we did!. Clean, friendly staff, a great view of the Mississippi and best of all great food. They get much of their meat from City Meat market in New Albin and the bacon on my chicken sandwich was so good we made that the next stop to buy our own! Hamburgers and fries were wonderful and the special of the day (meatballs, mashed potatoes and carrots) made my Wisconsin husband VERY happy! Looked like you could also come by river and tie up at the boat dock. We'll come again! read more

I had the Shep's Ahoy burger with fries and slaw. It was very tasty and the fries were really good. Items were priced right. It's a cozy bar and was pretty busy with college football on the screens, but everyone was very friendly. Nice view of the river. Good service. The outside deck was closed since it was fall and pretty chilly out. I will try again in the summer. read more
