After spending the afternoon in Gunnison, I chose Sherpa Cafe for dinner. Some locals gave this place a "thumbs up" and after dining here tonight, I can see why. This place is situated in an older home or business. They did a marvelous job of decorating the interior. Love the stupa out front and the outside dining patio as well. Staff was very friendly as well. I ordered Papadam with dipping sauce, Chicken Makhani, Naan with Raisins & Coconut, Diet Coke (can), and Kheer. Food was amazing! My only feedback is they could improve the Papadam dipping sauce and provide more white rice with the entree. They only give you a small cup of it. One serving from your entree dish and it's completely gone. Naan was fantastic! I don't see Naan with Raisins & Coconut often. It's nice that Sherpa Cafe offers it as a Naan option. The chicken was really good and I loved the buttery sauce. Comparable to Butter Chicken. Kheer was a fantastic bookend to a lovely meal. I loved the raisins and nuts in the Kheer. I was thinking of dining at a few other places this evening. So glad I chose Sherpa Cafe! I had a great experience here. Service was slow. However, everything else made up for the slower service. I would love to return here again! I recommend checking out Sherpa Cafe if you live in Gunnison or if you're in town visiting. Hope your experience will be as memorable as mine was. You may decide to buy a t-shirt or hat on your way out!

We were craving warm spicy food in the cold weather so we decided to check this place out. Excellent service and ambiance -- very authentic vibe in the restaurant. Our waiter was amazing and prompt. The vegetarian momos were well cooked and the sauce was tasty but could be spicier. The soup was a little bland and salty but very filling. Would definitely go back if we're in the area again!

Overall (A-) It's a good place to get your fix of Indian/Nepalese food way out here. It's a nice safe bet place if you are craving Indian /Nepalese. Won't be the best but you won't be dissatisfied either Service (A-) The staff is super friendly and nice. They are trying there best. The food takes a little while to come out - but I was there on a Friday evening. They seem to serve the Naan as an appetizer not as part of the dinner. But maybe that is what folks want out here. Value (A-) It's fine around - $25-$30 per person. So the main dishes cost around $12-$20 each. Plus tip and tax. I got the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Garlic naan and the bill was just under $30 with tip and tax. It's around what I would expect to pay for Indian. Not expensive and not a great deal. Quality (B+) It was good but really "Americanized". Not as authentic as I would have liked it - and I don't mind americanized Indian food. Some reviews have called the flavors "bland". I would not go that far - I think that they lack some of the richness of flavors I was expecting. They are still good. This is a perfect place if you are introducing someone to Indian/Nepalese cuisine or if it's been a while and you are craving it. If you have been to more authentic places in Denver or England or Chicago or New York - it won't meet your expectations but it's not bad. For being located in Gunnison I think it is still a pretty good.

During ice fishing season we frequent Gunnison restaurants a lot, I'm upset I have been sleeping on this place. Hands down, best food in Gunnison. Hearty, flavorful, and down right amazing. We ordered the Tiki marmalade, Naan, bread, samosa. I'll be back!

Great spot to grab your Nepalese/Indian fix! Best garlic nan and veggie pakodas I've ever had! Will be coming here every time I'm in Gunnison from now on. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating. Staff is sweet and service is quick. I do wish the momos were available as an app option with smaller portion but they were delicious regardless

Seeing the reviews, I ordered the sherpa stew. I'm not a curry fan, but the soup was quite good. Soup contained: lots of chicken; potatoes; cauliflower; not enough dumplings; lots of carrots. The naan was fabulous (dense) and made great leftovers when lightly toasted and buttered. Husband ordered tikka masala - you don't choose the spice level, so it was basic. Great local vibe & warming on a cool, rainy day. Come to SW Metro denver. read more

Where do you find great "indian" (Nepalese food) in Gunnison? The Sherpa Cafe! We really enjoyed our dinner! They accommodated our request of making the Tikka Masala a little spicy and it was perfect! The pappadam? The best! The service was excellent also. Very nice staff! A very nice experience! read more

We stopped here on our way back from Telluride and what a delight! The service was great!! We started out with the samosa's which were quite tasty. I ordered a chai and would definitely order it again... it was a perfect beverage for a chilly day! The chef surprised us with some perfectly prepared lentil soup.... what a treat! My entree was the Tibetan dish with the housemade noodles: ORDER THIS DISH IF YOU ARE A NOODLE CONNOISSEUR! They were delicious! The naan (plain & garlic) was very good - some of the best I've had. This was my second time here and it was great! I really wanted to try the Tibetan food, but in the end, chose the Chicken Tikka Masala and Garlic Naan. It was really great! Portions were generous, food was served quickly and was hot. The chicken was lean. The garlic naan had generous amounts of garlic on it. They don't skimp. Also the service was prompt and friendly. I would never drive by this place hungry. Ever. read more

What a treat - Nepalese in the Rockies! Gratis Lentil Soup got the mood going, then an awesome family style meal with plenty of naan, basmati rice and various sauces, including a nice curry. Food is very much NOT spicy, so if heat is your thing definitely ask for it. Nice selection of Indian beers and friendly service. read more

I absolutely devour Indian food whenever I have the chance. Moving to Gunnison I was nervous my appetite would never fully be satisfied, and then came the Sherpa Cafe. Amazing Saag, and incredible Naan, not to mention everyone that works there is incredibly polite and willing to help. Definitely worth a stop as frequently as possible. read more

We've lived in the area for over a year and finally decided to try Sherpa Cafe. Can't figure out what took us so long! The whole family, including our 4 year-old and 20 month-old loved this meal! We tried an appetizer sampler, vegetable korma, lentil soup, saag, naan and another vegetable dish and all were wonderful. The appetizers were a little on the greasy side but still very tasty. The dining area was bright and pleasant. We will definitely be eating here again. read more

Food was meh. Service was terrible. They did not remember who ordered what and screwed up the drink orders multiple times. They we're also absent and we had to go and get our checks from the cash register. Please avoid. read more

The complimentary lentil soup was just the beginning of this excellent meal! Had the 'mo app and it was wonderful (previous reviewer who called them greasy failed to mention the cone steamed unless requested fried). Fellow dining partner had the 'mo meal and mixed it up with chicken and beef. I had the Sherpa stew with lamb as an entree and it was spot on. Incredible flavor, the proper amount of meat, and a wonderful balance of spices. The wee dumplings were the hidden surprise. The buttered naan was so wonderful to dip into the chutney from the 'mo and the stew! Service was friendly, beer was good, eat here! read more

I had the best samosas I have ever eaten, and I've had many many meals of food from this region. My group ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and Saag Panir and we're extremely satisfied with both dishes. Naan bread portions are generous and very delicious! Only complaint was the rice; it was very bland, not the grain of rice (basmati) that I am used to eating with this type of meal. Nonetheless, the rest of the meal was so great that the rice didn't even matter. The owner is an absolute delight to talk to. You won't be disappointed with a visit to the Sherpa Café! read more

Stopped in for lunch on a Wednesday while driving route 50 across country. What a pleasant surprise to find Nepalese/Tibetan food! The ambience was nothing special but the service was great (really friendly with good recommendations) and the food was really delicious. Complimentary dhal for starters and we also ordered the saag dip with naan (so yum). For entrees we had the Jal Frezi with shrimp and the Tibetan stew (vegetable). Everything was flavorful and delicious and the naan was perfect. And we had enough leftover for another meal further down the road. Highly recommend! read more

Pulled into their parking lot the day before yesterday to eat with 16 other people. The owner refused to let our children use his bathroom and he told us "I don't want your business! Leave!" Because he did not want all of the vehicles in his parking lot. We wanted to try the food but when someone tells you they do not want your business we took it down the road. Would absolutely NOT recommend this place! read more

My travels take me thru Gunnison a few times a year and I always make it a point to stop at one of my favorite dining spots. This visit brought 3 of us and we split a Sherpa delight and a tandoori chicken kabob along with garlic naan. Very tasty and hearty meal and the prices are a bargain compared to what you would pay for a compare able meal in any big city. The service is excellent and I enjoy the photos and other Tibetan items throughout the resturaunt. Can't wait to get back to Gunnison and the Sherpa cafe! read more

This delightful surprise would have netted five stars but the mango ice cream as served was inedible. Frozen solid. Everything else about the meal was absolutely perfect, though. I was initially disappointed that they would not serve the combination appetizer platter on a weekday but the sherpa roll substitution was a tasty surprise. The garlic Naan was superb, as was the chicken korma. A taste of India in the high country. Highly recommended. read more

We tried the Indian food and didn't care for it. We might have had better luck with the more traditional dishes they serve. We ordered a few samplers and extra naan. It just didn't wow us. And the veggies in my curry were very hard, not edible. I wish it were better! read more

Delicious food! No matter what I try off the menu, it's wonderful. Momo appetizer makes for a great start. Chicken Korma is my absolute favorite, although the Tikka Masala is a close second. Their lentil soup = amazing, and the kir...don't skip it! Good portions, very friendly service, and fair prices. As a local, this is one of my favorite places to eat! read more

went there and ordered, took 30 min to get 4 drinks and another 20 to recieve kids food ,waitress was too busy in the back talking ,was handed cold plates of fries and nothing more finally after and hour and a half we canceled our order and just paid for the kids, the lady cook was very rude after I explained we wanted to cancel our order and just head out ....maybe will try at a later date but probably not....very disappointed read more

Established in 2013.

The Sherpa Café has been a Crested Butte cultural staple since July 2010. Thanks to the love and support of the community, we proudly expanded to the new Sherpa Cafe, Gunnison in March 2013. We at the Sherpa Cafe offers the unique flavors of Nepali and Indian foods with prices that are very reasonable. We serve the best authentic Nepali and Indian foods.

Meet the Business Owner: Pemba S.

-For the last 20 years, Pemba has been guiding everything from Mt. Everest to the legendary Annapurna mountains. An experienced leader, guide and sherpa, he brings a wealth of local and environmental knowledge to our journey. Pemba grew up in Nepal, and now runs Alpine Adventures International from his home in Crested Butte, CO. AAI is a company dedicated to helping ordinary fit people achieve their climbing and adventure dreams. Pemba has identified and perfected a small number of unique challenges that will let you to see the visually spectacular Himalayan mountains, experience firsthand the legendary culture of the Sherpa people, and accomplish something that you can be proud of your whole life.

The chicken was flavorful (though it needed a bit of salt) and was a generous portion for the price - I ended up splitting between three separate meals. The garlic naan (also needed salt) was good but it was even better toasted the next day. My favorite part was the wildly precise ready time of the food. I called it in and and asked how long, she said 7-8 minutes. It was literally ready in 7 minutes and 30 seconds. Lol.

Unfortunately their chicken tikka masala fell short on flavor and the chicken was on the dryer side. The beef momos tasted and looked like they were store bought (balls of beef rather than uniform filling and dripping with oil). The chutney it was served with almost tasted like salsa which I wasn't a huge fan of but that's probably personal preference. The hot sauce they serve is more like a spicy oil. The restaurant itself is nothing fancy and looks to be more popular for takeout but it's very homey with each table having a map of Nepal and lots of Nepalese decor. I wanted to love this very clearly family run spot but it fell short for me.

The wine list is very nice, and you won't break the bank -- especially at happy hour, with two dollars off each glass of wine between 5 and 7 PM. We had the House Malbec, from Mendoza, Argentina, and it had a delicious flavor and aroma. It was a full bodied and smooth, dark red offering. For an appetizer, we had the Shishati grilled peppers with pesto/cilantro sauce, and they were just fantastic. They are mild, nicely grilled, and beautifully presented. It is served as an appetizer, but please be warned, one out of every nine peppers is exceedingly hot. We had about 12 peppers, and all of them were mild, so we beat the odds! I've had hamburgers all over the world, and I can honestly say I have not had a better cheeseburger than I got right here from the menu at Blackstock. It's in a traditional bun, lightly toasted, with tempura, onion, cracked pepper, mayo, Tabasco, candied and smoked bacon, and it is served with Hand-cut fries. You can add guacamole for a dollar, or blue cheese or Gruyere cheese for another dollar. But I did not add a thing; it was perfect as it came out of the kitchen for me! You will be asked how you want your hamburger cooked, and I chose medium. It could not have been better! It's on the menu at a very fair $21 including your hand-cut fries. My lovely dinner-date had the petite filet mignon, a 5-ounce offering of spectacular steak, served with goat cheese, potato croquettes, asparagus, stewed shallots, served with a Cabernet Demi glaze at $45. It was a large serving, I believe bigger than 5 ounces, because we are taking half of it home in a to-go box! Again, the food was spectacular... really good. We will finish with the flourless chocolate torte, serve with whipped cream and Amarina dark cherries at $11. If I was a betting man, I'd say you're gonna love this place! Take a few pictures, do what I did, and leave a review, because more people need to know the quality of food coming out of this little storefront on a busy street in Gunnison! We visited Sherpa Cafe on a Sunday evening, and the experience was quite enjoyable. Our family of five was seated promptly at a table that fit us comfortably, though it was close to a ceiling speaker that was a bit louder than preferred. Despite that, we were able to chat without too much difficulty. Service was efficient; our drinks and silverware arrived quickly, and our orders were taken soon after. We started with cheese naan and vegetable samosas. The naan had a nice texture and was fresh, though I think I'd prefer trying the garlic naan next time for more flavor. The samosas were tasty, but I found them lacking a bit of heat compared to what I'm used to. Two of our kids ordered chicken fingers, which came with a generous portion of fries, while the third enjoyed the Beef Momos. He found them juicy and reminiscent of soup dumplings, although he wasn't a fan of the accompanying sauce. My wife had the Paneer Korma, which she liked a lot but couldn't finish, and I opted for the Chicken Makhani, which turned out to be essentially Butter Chicken. It was delicious, and like the others, I ended up with leftovers. While the initial service was quick, it took longer than expected to receive our to-go boxes and check, which added about 20-30 minutes to our visit. Overall, I'd recommend Sherpa Cafe.
