Got into Crested Butte Sunday evening and set out for dinner after a long day of travel. Turns out there's not a ton open on Sundays in CB, but Sherpa Cafe was there for us and they did a great job! You can sit indoors or outdoors; the inside is snug and cozy with not a ton of seating. The single-person bathroom was clean and tidy. We were happy to hang out outside and people watch. Service was very polite and sweet and got our orders out quickly and efficiently. We shared orders of samosas, garlic naan, chicken tikka masala, and chicken momo. The samosas were light and crispy, not greasy at all, and came with a lightly spicy dipping sauce that we all liked. The chicken tikka masala was super creamy, maybe a little on the sweet side compared to other versions I've had, but still delicious with the perfectly aromatic basmati rice. Weirdly enough, the garlic naan was the weak link -- it wasn't buttery / crispy enough for me. Still enjoyed it, but I've had better. Lastly, the chicken momo were tender, flavorful, and numerous. In these covid times it's great to eat outside on their patio. They set up metal picnic tables under the beautiful Crested Butte sky. Firstly, you go inside to order your food and they will come outside and bring it to you. The family and the waiter are all very friendly and wonderful. The chai tea is particularly delicious with great overtones of cinnamon while the Mango Lassi has great smooth yogurt taste. I highly recommend both. The garlic naan bread is delicious with any entree you order. The mimosas are particularly well-cooked. The breading is nicely browned and crispy. Best place to eat in crested butte! Even if you're unsure of Himalayan/Indian food, I promise you will LOVE Sherpa Cafe. The food is absolutely delicious. We almost didn't come here, even though it's rated #1 on Yelp in CB. But I'm so glad we did because it was the best food. Reservations - they don't take reservations or follow a waitlist. If there's a table, you'll get it, if not, you can wait around until one becomes available. TIP - 5pm-6pm is not busy. Come after a day of skiing or hiking and you'll get a table easily. Evenings are more packed and you may see a line out the door. Drinks - a very small drink menu of some wines and beers. Nothing fancy. Don't expect to come here for drinks. The food is why you come here. TIP - grab a drink a the dogwood before or after dinner. Food - I don't know where to start because everything was amazing. But here's a go: 1. Naan bread - GET IT. As an app, with your meal, any which way. Garlic and cheese. We ended up ordering 2 or 3. 2. Chicken Momo (dumplings) - everyone was ordering these so we felt like we had to. Not as appetizing as I had imagined, but still good. 3. Lamb chow main - if you aren't sure you like Indian spices, order this! Very mild and super yummy. Sort of reminds me of Chinese vegetable lo mein 4. Sherpa Stew - holy crap this was DELICIOUS. One of the most popular menu items. Mild in Indian spices but loaded with so much flavor. Get it! 5. We loved Sherpa. It was our first time eating Nepalese food and it was just delicious. The place is a small, unassuming spot off of Elk. We ate the saag paneer, which is like a spinach dip with cheese, the garlic Naan, the chicken makhari sp?) and the noodle dish. The chicken makhari was the clear winner of the table. Our server was so cool and made us feel welcome. We wish they had desserts, as I'm sure they would have been amazing! We went back for lunch the next day as well and tried out some more items. Oh my goodness.... went here for a late lunch as a winter storm descended. Super clean, kindly staff-- but best of all-- amazing food! We were just 2 people but got 2 orders of naan because they were just $2 an order-- well we wound up with enough for easily FOUR people! The service is very friendly and the food is made to order so comes hot and fresh. The quality of the food is also very good for the price point. We had the onion baji which is similar to a blooming onion and is made very fresh. Next we had the garlic naan with many entrees from the chicken korma, chicken tikka masala, the spinach cheese tofu homemade dish and the dumplings. The spinach and cheese dish is good but very heavy...could be made a bit lighter if possible and also could addd a little bit more flavoring to it to really knock it out of the ball park. This is the real deal. And I don't mean for authenticity, because I've never been to India or Nepal. I just mean this food was. Crazy good and you should eat here. Started with the samosas - two per order, great for sharing. I love that the potatoes are shredded instead of mashed! But the real winner here is the sauce. I would eat anything with that sauce, pretty sure. I ordered the curry and my friend ordered the butter chicken. Both were super tasty, although I may give the edge to the butter chicken.
