Forgive me for not taking a pic. I've been coming in and out of Gunnison Colorado for years as a corporate charter pilot and have always enjoyed the Backcountry Café. This time I had the opportunity to bring my wife along and she just fell in love with the café. We ate there a couple of mornings for breakfast and a couple of days for lunch and as always great food, great people and sometimes there's a line out the door. One morning breakfast while we were in town it was so packed that a couple got up from the table, came to us at the door and invited us to sit with them. Turns out they're locals. Just want to say we are super appreciative to Tony & Ellie for asking Stephanie and I to sit with them. We now have new friends in town. Had a great breakfast. Great Fellowship. We will be back. Over the years, I think I've had everything on the breakfast menu. This trip for lunch I had the backcountry club, Philly cheesesteak, and Blue Mesa sandwich. Nice spot that is obviously popular with locals. It was pretty crowded for breakfast. Service was quick despite the rush. It's a classic old cafe with a modern vibe. The menu is pretty broad, but I settled on huevos rancheros. They were delicious and the portion was filling. read more

Well, for starters, we will definitely return the next time we are driving through Gunnison, CO. We stopped in for breakfast around 11:00am on Monday, April 28, and the place was busy. We were greeted immediately with a smile and seated to a nice table with a fresh flower arrangement. Nice touch. The coffee, in cute, mismatched mugs, is excellent! I ordered the chicken and waffles. Ask for the hot honey. The 2 thick waffles were very tasty, with a nice crunch. The chicken was a good size, moist, with a crunchy and FLAVORFUL breading. I also had an English muffin. Jams and butter in individual packets are provided. Hubby had the chicken fried steak, eggs, home fries and sourdough toast. He devoured his breakfast, as did I. Both members of the clean plate club. The staff, especially our waitress, Monique, were all smiling, engaged, and attentive. Clearly locals dine here as well. The decor is vibrant and fun, and inviting. And, as I always feel is important, the bathroom I used was clean! Located on Main Street amidst shops and other cafés, this wonderful eatery offers breakfast and lunch (at least). I usually have breakfast at the backcountry but today a friend and I went for lunch. I ordered my favorite, patty melt. It was the worst patty melt I've ever had. It was more like a raw burger with some cooked onions on a piece of toast not what a patty melt is, very disappointed. It was $16. Terrible! read more

Stopped in mid week for a late breakfast. We seemed to be the only ones who weren't from the area; but staff greeted us like we were regulars. Friendly, polite and on top of everything. Monique was our server and she was excellent. My wife had the chicken and waffles and I had the chicken fried steak. Both were very good; but the chicken and waffles had been the highlight. Good lunch while taking a trip through the mountains. Comfortable, reasonably priced and decent service. The grilled turkey, with delicious bacon, served on sourdough was a hit. Passing through Gunnison again, we chose this place for lunch after we found the Dive closed. Backcountry Cafe seems popular and feels like a local place. We sat inside as there was a wait for the back patio. Their menu offers all day breakfast as well as American-type lunch options. They have a lot of choices available and there's probably something for everyone. Parents and fiancé all got Philly cheesesteaks and fries for lunch. I was feeling more breakfast-y, so I got the "Cowboy breakfast" which came with one egg, a pancake, and bacon. I also added a side of home fries. The food was good. Nothing super remarkable, but good. Everything was cooked properly and they hit my preferred level of doneness on both my scrambled eggs and my bacon. The pancake was light and fluffy. My fam liked their Phillies and fries. The home fries were awesome but for a few larger bites that were a little undercooked. Service was friendly and very fast -- despite being very busy, they got our food out to us in less than 15 minutes. This is a good stop if you're craving some American grub or breakfast! read more

The service was fantastic. We had 11 people in our group a Faye did a great job serving our table all by herself! The place is an old fashioned restaurant but very clean and well kept up, exactly what we wanted. We had everything from breakfast to French dip. It was all great!! Eggs soft scrambled were perfect, over easy also perfect (at 1:30Pm!!). The French dip was tender and terrific! The Ruben was delicious. Chicken tenders tasted great and a lot of them. Absolutely loved this place! The food was outstanding and the service was quick and responsive. We hit it right after noon, and once we sat down, the place was bombarded by customers who had to stand around and wait for a table to clear. There were only about 12 in the place. My only grievance was the arctic temperatures under the table by the front window. In snow boots, my toes were freezing. Worth the suffering though, to experience those hashed brown patties and biscuits! It's worth mentioning that customer masks were not tightly regulated. An old-timer came in with no mask at all, signed up for a table, and proceeded across the dining room to the bathroom. If I were the type to be greatly offended by such a thing, I would deduct a star or two. read more

When eating in mountain towns my expectations are normally pretty low. You get used to paying more for food that's just not as good as in the city. So I was blown away by Backcountry Cafe! The food here is delicious the prices reasonable and the service was tremendous! Started my meal out with a cold brew iced coffee which was really refreshing on a nice summer morning! We ended up splitting a San Juan eggs Benedict and a huge Blue berry pancake!! It was really nice of them to split our meal for us without even having to ask! The Benedict was great loved the spin using green chili instead of hollandaise sauce! It worked perfectly with the chorizo and egg mmmm! Had brunch here today and it was yummmmmy. The western omelette was hearty and flavorful. Good amount of ham and the right amount of cheese. The sour dough bread was also tasty. The service was great. The staff all smiled at me and cheerfully greeted me. I sat at the counter and was quickly handed a menu and asked what I would like to drink. The food arrived quickly and was terrific. The silverware is in a basket that serves about every 2 seats at the counter. Highly recommend this place. It was busy at lunchtime on a weekday, so I imagine weekends might be difficult to get in. But because the food service is so quick, the line might move fast. read more

Went here twice first time the food and service was very good had two tables one with four children 6-11 years and another table 7 adults . So was very please with how fast and how great the food was and no mistakes. And they were very busy at the time. The next time it was just two adults same day same time not busy or crowed at all got seated waited to get our order taken.Then it took at least 30 minutes for our one blue berry pancake and biscuits and gravy to come out. Just thought that was a long time when there was only two other people in the place and four servers. The food was great but had to eat fast and catch a flight. Thought we could beat the usual Sunday morning rush at the better breakfast stops. The W my favorite was really still packed at 11:30 so we went down the street to the Back Country Cafe which will be my last visit. Service was friendly. Very long wait. Understandable, quite crowded, no problem. Two omelets finally arrived. Seemed ordinary but very "wet". Like chewing a saturated sponge. Never encountered this ever before. Dinner mate complained of the same anomaly. Other than that it probably would have been good. The "W" will get all of my future breakfast business. I live here ! read more

Needed a place to get breakfast before our drive back to Denver and decided to check out Backcountry Cafe. Backcountry Cafe is located right on Main St. in Downtown Gunnison. It was fairly busy on a Sunday morning, but it didn't take longer than 15 minutes to be seated which was nice. Our server Emily was so friendly and nice.. she really made our morning start off on a good note! Thanks Emily! We ordered a San Juan Benedict and a Single Blueberry Pancake. The San Juan Benedict was incredible!! The chorizo patties & 2 poached eggs served on a biscuit smothered in pork green chili, topped with cheddar cheese and cilantro was one of the best things I've had for breakfast in a few months. The pork green chili had so much flavor and the eggs were perfectly poached on top of the juicy chorizo patties. The blueberry pancake was huge and it wasn't your typical fluffy pancake, it was more thin, kind of like a crepe. I appreciated the huge amount of blueberries in the pancake, each bite was so good! This restaurant is totally worth a visit and make sure to have Emily as your server, she really made our experience at Backcountry Cafe a memorable one! read more
