Loved our stay at Sherwin creek campground! Very beautiful campgrounds, close to town but yet you feel like you're in the middle of no where. Our campsite was clean and pretty level, we stayed at 052. Camp host made her rounds to tell everyone about the rules and bears, and to give out parking passes. She was very nice! We would definitely stay here again. Bathrooms were very very smelly... maybe the worst camping bathrooms I've experienced ha but everything else was perfect and I can't wait to be back! read more

Really cute campgrounds in a beautiful spot. The bathrooms are vault toilets but they are surprisingly well kept up on and smelled good inside not all nasty. The spot was a walk up camp ground but the parking was essentially right at our campground which was nice. The campgrounds are close together but not super close. A large portion of the campgrounds were rented to trailers many of whom appeared to be there for a dirt biking event but they were all very nice and where not too loud. The sites get very dusty so I'd definitely recommend having baby wipes as there is no showers on site and the creek although beautiful is very very cold snow melt that even washing your feet in will make them numb.(I still got in but it was cold!) it's close to the sherwin lake/valentine lake trailhead which was what we came for and the hike seriously outdid itself I was not expecting such beauty along the way 10/10 would hike to lake valentine again especially on a hotter day as it was not very hot while we were there. Also the camp host was very very nice the only thing I'd say would say that could make the campgrounds a perfect 5 stars would be some sort of on site shower even if it was by payment because just being at camp it gets quite dusty other then that it was a great experience read more

I have camped here the last 3 summers and would highly recommend camping here. This weekend I stayed at site #27. Far from the creek but I think this one is my favorite. Big space with privacy on both sides, you don't feel crowded at all. Close to the restroom and camp host. Vault toilets here but they are always clean and no strong odor, I saw our host cleaning it multiple times. Pretty quiet campground, at least in this loop. Close to town but also secluded. I think this is my favorite campground. If you do walk in to town make sure to have a headlamp or flashlight, it's a very dark road. Also, ignore gps directions that take you on the dirt road and instead enter from Old Mammoth Road. read more

Nice campground, we camped the first week it was open for season. It seems off roaders are using this camp because nearby access. The vehicles were noisy but thankfully not constant and the folks who owned them were aware and tried to limit noise. Mike And Patty the camp host were quick to talk to them about issues. When I asked them to adjust the direction of their music to point away from us they did so gladly and turned down too.we all want to have a good time camping whether in tent or full RV. read more

It's a great campground if you have a dirt bike and a dune buggy. VERY noisy and dusty due to a constant stream of off highway vehicles and turbo diesel dually tow rigs passing by the campground. Out of 40 spots I counted 2 tents. The majority of the campground was inside their trailers watching TV, or ripping around on their dirtbikes. Little no no privacy in the campsites, they're very exposed. If you're looking for peace and quiet this is not the place. HOWEVER if you're in a trailer and you want to ride your dirt bike I'm sure it's an awesome spot. No showers and vault toilets with no soap. Only positive was its close to town. I generally camp to escape noise and crowds so the proximity to town wasn't a selling point for me. I had a two night reservation but we left after 1 night. Just sucked in general. read more

Visited this campground in June 2020. Great campground with the most wonderful hosts (Debbie and John). So helpful and accommodating and patient!! With everyone itching to get out in nature after being cooped up in Covid, navigating the crowds and the FCFS sites looked like an impossible task but they maintained kindness and helped everyone the best they could. AT&T has the best service at this campground. Verizon was only so so. The spots were huge with lots of trees for hammocks and shade. The bathrooms were vault toilets but the hosts kept them pretty darn clean. I have zero complaints about this campground and fully intend to visit it again in the future. read more

Been camping here before it was a USFS camp (1957). The camp has been rearranged since then. The reservation system is flawed and should be First come first served. To many off roaders create noise and dust. The streams are nostalgic to me. Still a magical place to us. Indian Cave close by are fun to visit. It is over fished and a urban camp. The camp hosts do a fair job at keeping clean and order. read more

Visited this past weekend July 2020 and it was one of our favorite campgrounds we have ever stayed at! You take a small road off the beaten path to get there and it was exactly what we were looking for. Forest Dream Goals! Fave parts: so quiet, gorgeous large camp sites, clean bathrooms, lots of families, a creek running through the campground, close hiking trails! We didn't have a reservation and lucked out and got the last spot host says about 100 come through looking for openings a day (TH-SU) so if you don't have a res better go early. The campground was spacious, quiet, and great for our family. The camp host was super sweet and informative about bear activity. The bathrooms were well maintained. We stayed at site #12 which was listed as being very shady on recreation.gov and the picture on campsitephoto.com showed it completely shaded. When we arrived, we found that there were about 20-30 trees that had been cut down in the past 2 years so there was no shade. The spot was extremely hot! Site #11 was the same. read more

Great campground, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the town. There are two ways to get into the campground, both involving partial unpaved road. If you are coming from Bishop, take my advice and don't follow the google map directions (turning from the highway). Go into town, make a left on the road with the shell station/rite aid on the corners, make another left onto Sherwin Creek Rd. 3.5 miles unpaved vs. 1 mile unpaved. You're welcome. We stayed in a tent site (site #1). It was spacious and adjacent to the parking area. Restrooms and water nearby. We booked our site online which can be hit or miss, but we were very happy with our selection. We weren't on the creek (site #7, I believe is right up next to it) but you could hear it and we didn't have to deal with people walking through our site at all hours of the day to access it. There are 87 sites split up into multiple loops....most are RV sites but there are a handful of walk-in tent sites, all super easy to access. Maximum of 6 people per site. On our last day a group of 24 moved in, spread over multiple sites and the camp host mentioned paying for additional parking, so be aware of that if you plan on taking more than one vehicle. All sites are equipped with bear food lockers, fire pit, picnic table....the usual. Our camp host Susan was awesome! Very friendly. Came over and greeted us right away and gave us maps of the area. Her and the other host keep a very clean campground....we were very lucky. Unfortunately the group of 24 ruined our last day...making a mess of the restrooms, bathing their children and themselves in the water faucet and overflowing the drain (where it says clearly not to do that), not putting their food away at night which resulted in the dog next door growling in the middle of the night (Bear? Who knows?). Understandably, they too were trying to have a good time it was at the expense of others. That's what you get in a campground though. I absolutely LOVED this campground. You can hear the creek running from a lot of areas, it's peaceful and quiet and close enough to town if you need anything. We brought our UTV's to Mammoth and there are tons of riding and trails right from the campground. The bathrooms were really clean and the camp host was very friendly. I wish they had showers, but that's definitely not a deal breaker. We will be back next year for sure!!! read more

The campground itself was beautiful, and I loved listening to the rushing water from the creek next to our tent all night. We reserved the walk-in tent site #7. The parking area for the car wasn't far, so the set up of our tent and supplies went smoothly. In my opinion, it is the prettiest site at the campground because the creek is visible and easily accessible. That being said, you may have to deal with people walking through your site to see the creek. It is also close to a bathroom so there is a lot of foot traffic around your site. The grounds are well-maintained, but there are no showers or flushing toilets. So, the bathrooms do get a bit dirty and smelly. My one major problem with this campground was not necessarily the campgrounds fault or responsibility, but I think something needs to be done about it. There was a running camp for teenagers maybe a high school camp trip that was staying at the campground. My boyfriend and I brought our chairs closer to the creek (still in our campsite) when four teenage boys came over, stripped down to their underwear, and started bathing in the creek water. Using shampoo and soap and getting this beautiful creek WITH FISH AND WILDLIFE IN IT, all gross from their soap and dirty bodies. I was frustrated, but it got even worse when the entire group of kids came over walking through our camp site to bathe in the creek. There had to be at least 30 of them. It was totally rude and I would never use soap in a natural creek that way! The camp host needs to enforce some kind of rule where you can't use soap or shampoo in that water. read more

Really lovely and off the beaten path campground near Mammoth. Away from the crowds in the town of Mammoth but still really close by car, only about 10 minutes down the road. There are two roads that access the campground. If you are driving from Southern Ca GPS will want you to turn on Sherwin Creek Rd off of the 395. If you turn this way, make sure you have a high profile 4wd because it is a rocky and very uneven dirt road that continues for 3.5 miles. If you are driving a sedan you can also get there by taking route 203 from the 395 then making a left on Old Mammoth road, if you go this way the road is paved the entire way. The camp host was the nicest person we've ever come across in a campground and gave us great hiking recommendations. Most sites are not next to the creek but a short walk from it, the creek is stocked with trout and the fishing was great. The walk up sites are all creek-side. The bathrooms are vault style and no sinks but have electricity.The camp host sells firewood for $7 a bundle (cash only). Everything is very clean and well maintained. People at the camp are mostly families. This is not a rowdy party campground at all, mostly RVs and if you have an ATV or dirt bike there are lots of trails accessible from the campground. read more

We dry-camped in our Rv for a week here. 2 miles down the road from town, tucked away from traffic and crowds. Which is super nice but since you're 2 miles down the road we had to take our car every time we wanted to go explore mammoth. Super nice camp hosts. Spacious, clean sites. Water fill stations but basically glorified, stinky porta-potties. Can't beat the price and would consider staying again(now that we got good at dry camping by day 5 of 6 ha!). read more

We camped here the week after Labor Day at a tent-only campsite. It was sooo beautiful! The creek was amazing, except for the yahoo who decided that, with the whole length of the creek available to him, he had to cast right smack in our campsite. People are strange! The hosts were super nice, and maybe because it was getting colder, the vault restrooms did not smell at all. We and our little dogs had a great time exploring! read more
