After replacing a door and frame recently, it was easy to see the drywall and patching that went around where the frame had been. Luckily, the previous owner of the home had kept cans of paint (and labeled them by room!) from the last time the house had been spruced up. I grabbed the can for the room needing some love and headed to my local Porter Paints to get what I needed. The store itself, located at the corner of Breckenridge Ln and Willis Ave, is clean, well-organized, and a great place to find home improvement inspiration. While not as large as a home improvement megastore, the location had everything you might need to give your home a professional-looking paint job. The staff was very friendly, and - using the can I had brought in - were able to match the paint I bought to the can the previous owner had left. It took just about 2 minutes for my can of paint to be ready and for me to be back on my way to improving the look of my home.

The folks greeted me when I entered and thanked me for the copious amount of love and attention that I showed the store cat. No pressure to buy, no shakedown about my intentions. They then gave me space to get down to the business of examining paint swatches. Based on the discussions I heard while in the store, I think that a lot of professional painters and designers use Dages. The people working there are helpful and very knowledgable, but not at all pushy. They spoke to their regulars like friends, which I loved. Dages has a full range of equipment, paint types, and colors to fit any DIY or commercial endeavor. The staff are cool and I wouldn't hesitate asking them any question I had about a project. When I left with a handful of ideas but no actual paint, they thanked me and said come back anytime. That's my kind of customer service. I'll be back, no doubt.

The store in La Grange could use a few more hands on deck as the line was long with only one (super nice and helpful) guy handling everything on his own. Professional painters were ordering supplies while amateurs like myself were asking for color-matching and new colors. Sherwin Williams paint is a good paint. It's a bit pricey for everyday painting but, I'm repainting the entire interior of my home, so I'm willing to pay more for the paint and the advice.

I was immediately drawn to a blue gray color named "Peace". It was shown within a grouping and their associate (Anthony) helped me find a larger swatch. Anthony was very attentive and helpful, letting us know AAA members got a 25% discount. With the discount, our gallon of Hi-Hide was under $35 with tax. He quickly mixed our color and made sure we left with an opener and paint stick. We've used Sherwin-Williams paint for most of our house and we highly recommend the paint. As a home with 2 young boys, dog and cats it's important we have durable paint that can be wiped clean.

An employee at Lowe's (funny enough) suggested we try out Ferguson, so right after they opened on Saturday, we walked in. But I doubt we'll ever be back. We looked around Ferguson's beautiful showroom for a few minutes, and I have to give them props here. It really is a nice space that makes you want to daydream about kitchens and baths. One of their saleswomen came out to talk to us, and from there, the interaction went down hill. She seemed frustrated with us before we could really ask her anything. About halfway through explaining that we were in need of a shower curtain ring, overflow kit and the specialty pipe to extend the shower head from the ceiling, she abruptly turned and walked back into her office. My boyfriend gave me this exasperated look, and he rarely complains about service. She came back a few minutes later with some catalogs and started hurriedly flipping through pages. She next asked us a series of questions like she was expecting us to say the wrong thing. She asked us about the measurements of the tub. I admit we should have come with those in hand, but she didn't even want to give us options. (Come to find out after talking to some other plumbing supply shops, that there are only a few options for some of these parts. We could have easily identified what we needed if she would have shown us what was available.) She told us that it typically takes a week to 10 days for items to come in. Other plumbing shops have told us three days for the same items from the same brands. I think she just wanted to get us out the door. Did we smell bad or something? It's not like we showed up in our dirty work clothes from when we were grouting tile. We are two, childless 30-somethings with disposable income, who are eager to buy items to renovate our new house -- a pretty desirable demographic really. Maybe we just got a saleswoman who was having a bad day. I don't know. But the first thing we talked about after leaving was that we weren't going back. And happily, we have since found other businesses that will gladly help us out.

I got answers like; We don't work on that brand (Ariens), to we can get to it in two young three weeks. Not to mention huge differences in price. I finally found a local shop in Charlestown that was reasonable and could get to it in 3 to 4 days. I was on my way to the shop to confirm them picking up my mower and turn around time. My route took me down hwy 403 right past Holmes Ace Hardware. I decided to stop in and talk to them since they sell Zero Turn mowers. I asked who they use for repairs and service. I was told they have their own shop on property and do their own repairs and service. I asked if they took walk in repairs. Yes they do. They gave me a reasonable estimate and said they would try to pick the mower up that same afternoon. I was beyond happy I had decided to stop in. Later that same afternoon they picked up my mower. Unbelievably the next afternoon they called me and said the mower was ready and they wanted to bring it back to me. WOW! Holmes repaired my mower within 24 hrs and for a reasonable price! I was ecstatic because my yard was needing cutting. Holmes will be my first call for any future repairs. I've already told two of my neighbors about Holmes mower repair.

When you've done a fair amount of shopping at the bigger box hardware places (we'll go with the…read morenames Orange and Blue) and you can't find what you want, I find that Tractor Supply usually sneaks in for the win. Recently we decided we wanted to put in a rain barrel for watering our veggies, flowers, and Crepe Myrtles. We checked several locations of Orange and Blue and, not to anyone's surprise, found that they didn't have any in stock. Ordering would have taken a couple weeks to get here. These days 2 weeks is a LONG time for delivery. We had cash on hand, so I drove out to Tractor Supply. Turns out they had 2 rain barrels in stock. While I was there I visited the wild bird seed aisle. Tractor Supply has a GREAT selection and variety of bird seed. I have about 10 feeders in our back yard so I go through A LOT of bird seed. (Well, *I* don't, the birds do. I just put it in the feeders.) I've never been let down by the bird seed they have in stock or the variety, and there's almost always a sale of some kind going on. The staff at this location is always fun and helpful. If you're looking for something they'll take you to it instead of nodding in a general direction, and there are a few that have a great sense of humor. No one wants to be helped by a robot. A little personality can go a long way in making a routine shopping visit into a great one. About 15 minutes later and I had my rain barrel and a few bags of bird seed and a pleasant conversation with the guy at the register (whose name I don't recall) who had mad skills at zapping and flipping that scanning gun. From now on Tractor Supply will be the first place I look. Orange and Blue will have to wait.
