I hadn't been apple picking since I was a child. We would go to an orchard every year, in New Jersey, for apples at one time of the year, peaches for another and strawberries for yet another. Several years ago, I took my daughter, who was four at the time, strawberry picking and just the joy she had at doing that and seeing the few animals that they had on property was just a really cool experience. To share something from my childhood with her and the amazing chocolate and strawberry shakes that I made that evening. Now years later, my buddy was taking his daughter apple picking and asked if I wanted to join them. Of course, I can pick some and make an apple pie or apple french toast? Who knows. So it was a crisp, autumn day and well, we should have come a few weeks earlier. Many of the apple trees were already finished for the year, but we still managed to get quite a few nice apples for our buckets. My buddy's seven year old had a blast and got the hang of using the apple-grabber quick. The staff was very friendly and my buddy even ran into some folks from his school that he works at all the way out here. It's a place to make memories for your kids and one day, when my kiddo is up here in PDX I will bring her here as well. Enjoy. read more

Luckily they have signs on each tree labeling the apples and what they're good for. At one point we could smell the sweetness from the trees. We just loved this place. And the owner was so nice. He was super informative not only to us, but even to people who were calling and he even helped someone and guided them to a different orchard when he didn't have what they were needing. The variety they offer is very large, more than some of the bigger spots we have stopped. And he takes pride in his trees by the way you pick them, etc. They have buckets and apple pickers you can use to reach up and get apples that are too high up. We were given detailed directions and shown the names of each tree and their area before heading out so it was easy to navigate and find the apples we wanted. There are also signs on each tree with the name and what they are good for (eating, cooking, etc). The best part is the price. You can't beat their pricing. They are worth more in my opinion. :) In the summer they have several other options like cherries, plums, pears, etc. We have been traveling for the last 5 months and we have hit several orchards recently both on the east coast and now starting the west coast. This was one of my favorites since it is owned and ran by one family and doesn't have a commercial feel to it. read more

So unlike many yelpers who said the male worker was rude, I would say the opposite. We called prior to arriving and the male worker was very friendly. He asked if we had ever picked with them before and gave us instructions on what would happen once we got there. Very informative. I honestly didn't think I would enjoy picking apples (as those were the only fruit they had last weekend), but I found it to be more fun than I imagined. We asked the workers if they had any tart apples and they just told us we could sample the apples right off the tree to determine if the apples were good for us. We then picked up a white bucket and an apple picker and set out. The orchard was much larger than I imagined. There were many families there picking apples and the orchard was large enough that it wasn't crowded. We then went back to the main structure to pay for our apples. They were around 0.99 cents a pound. Now I found the older lady helping us to be less personable than the male that helped us. She wasn't unfriendly by any means, just a little more business and a little less fun. Overall I did enjoy my visit to the Sherwood Orchards. I think if apples are your thing then now is the time to go. I prefer other fruits and look forward to visiting in a different season read more

Not sure why the reviews are so old, but here's a new one!!! Where do I start, and sorry so long... I came to Portland for a weekend during the summer, and knew I wanted to return, specifically for apple picking!!! I did a bit of scouting, and planned to drive out to the Fruit Circle/Trail along the Columbia River...but with the unpredictable weather, decided not to because I discovered this place, much closer!!! Their website is updated with what's available, and I found what I have been searching for a few years now, the Ashmead's Kernel!!! Anyway, I drive up, and you're directed where to park, between the fruit trees. The nicest gentleman asked all the customers what they wanted, and consulted his little hand written chart and told everyone exactly where to go. We had a lovely conversation about careers, alma maters, and such. There are flags, each fruit tree is labeled with plates to ID the variety, and best use (eating/cooking/saucing/juicing/etc.) Can't read them all clearly, and some have fallen off, but whatever. I picked up a bigger bucket and a telescoping picker/grabber and headed straight to the AK trees. I managed to come up with probably 10#, then added some Akane, Orenco, Winter Banana, Zaber something, Idared, Pippin, Macs and others; probably spelling these all wrong, but that rounded out the next 6# or so of fruit. Didn't need a ladder, plenty of apples within reach. So I snapped a few pics, then lugged my bucket to pay. Apparently, they have fantastic plums per other customers, and I saw a lot of peach and Asian pear trees. The gentleman and I chatted a little more, then his spouse returned from the salon. She was just as sweet, and we chatted about how the farm specializes in heirloom varieties, and which ones she loves. I paid, and she wouldn't even take my measly $0.15 (Total 15.85#) out of $16. The price is $1 per # for apples. I left happy, had a great experience, and would return again!!! read more

I love fruit picking and was happy to find Sherwood Orchards for cherry picking just 30 min away from my home. They had mostly just Royal Ann cherries ($1.25/lb) which look like Rainier cherries but are smaller, softer, and have a shorter life span. The cherries were really delicious and froze very well too. My biggest complain was that most of the cherries that you can reach without a ladder were already picked and there was a complete shortage of ladders so we spent the first 30 minutes or so wandering around waiting for a ladder. You can bring your own ladder but I don't have one myself and it wasn't recommended on their website to bring one. read more

The male owner was not very welcoming. The woman was nice. We found that many of the apples were not edible, so there wasn't much choice. After hunting for a while, though, we left with about 9 pounds of apples. With so many choices nearby, I don't think we'll be back due to the lack of customer service by the older male. The customer service at Sherwood Orchards is non-existent. The staff were uninviting, rude, and abrasive. They were also condescending, both over the phone as well as in person. We overheard that the orchards were abundant with ripe, ready to pick fruit, but most of the apples we came across were either rotten or hard and inedible. The price is great but with all of the cons it's not worth it. I definitely won't be bringing my family back to this location, nor do I recommend it. My wife said it best - "This doesn't seem like the kind of business that wants people to visit as much as it seems like a farmer with a bunch of apples and no idea what to do with them." read more

I am not sure what to think here. We went on a quiet day and received a lot of good information about what might be sweet and ready. We checked out the recommended varieties. Of the dozenish we were told about, two varieties actually looked good. When we asked for more recommendations, the gentleman seemed shocked that there weren't any good looking ones left at the bottom part of the orchard. Honestly, most of them were on the ground. Regardless, he pointed out a few more to try. We weren't disappointed with the Akane apples. They were pretty, sweet and perfect. They lasted all of a day or two off the tree though, so we lost quite a few. The price was a buck a pound. Very fair. I will give them credit there. As we were leaving, we were told about all the pesticides and sprays used on the plants to prevent all the maladies common with these types of fruit trees. I know the big "in" thing is the "organic" option. If you want organic, here is not the place to get your fruit. I think what disappointed me the most is I contacted the orchard about doing a small school group a couple of weeks later because we enjoyed our time in the orchard when we went on our own time. The same gentleman that was so kind before to us was very curt and standoffish over the phone. When he asked for how many kids and I explained it was a small group of about 20 kids with a lot of parent supervision, he repeated he doesn't want large groups of 45 kids. He kept saying they once did one of 45 and not again. They can't do 45 kids. Uhh...we don't have 45 kids. We have about 20. I get it. You don't do large school groups. Ranting and raving about it only convinced me that even on our free time, we won't be picking here anymore. I apologize for thinking that a local business would've wanted to make connections with local schools. We learned so much about apples when we went to pick, and they were so eager to share. I was just disappointed they were so rude about this. A simple "we aren't able to take groups" would've sufficed. EDIT: Sherwood Orchard responded to an email inquiry from a teacher at the same school, asking the same question about the class visiting. The email was very kind and made recommendations of where to try instead. That's more like it! Now to be that kind when responding to people on the phone. read more

I'd give this place negative stars if I could. Tried to go out for a nice day with our inlaws and 2 year old son for some apple picking. Initially when we got there everything was ok and the woman was very nice. However things went south very quickly. The male owner was the rudest person I have come across in a long time. My son who again is two years old started to run through the orchard and I went to go get him. Once I brought him back the male owner told me I needed to learn to get my kid under control.............it was so rude it caught me off guard. Also the apples we saw available were wormy and tiny while other apples in the orchard were big and ripe but were not allowed to be picked :/. Honestly go to sauvie island if you wanna go pick fruit. More welcoming people and much better selection. You couldn't pay me to go back to this place. Hopefully the owner will learn to not be so rude and be more welcoming to families. Steer clear of this place. Especially if you have children. read more

I love this place. I've been going there every year, mainly for their cherries (Vans and Royal Ann) and sometimes for peaches and plums too, since 2002 except for last year when they had a bad crop of cherry and closed. The owners I've met so far are all very nice, especially the petite lady who taught me her secret recipe for cherry pie. It's a great place for U-pick. Their price is so reasonable and hasn't gone up for years like many other U-pick farms. I highly recommend this place to everyone who loves fresh fruit. You won't regret. Wear closed-toe shoes and not sandals or flip-flops because the ground isn't even and you may need to climb up a ladder. They're cash and check only and don't accept cards. read more
