I just wish this market was more of an actual legit market and less tourist gift shop vibe. On to the details of my visit: I'd been looking forward to a solid local market and this one had been on my radar for a while. Unfortunately this wasn't it. It felt more like a typical Oregon roadside tourist trap with the standard "Made in Oregon" stale chocolates, granola, sweets, etc. The produce sections was relatively tiny and only about half of it looked really good. The frozen meat sections was almost entirely out of red meat, there was a tiny amount of fish and then frozen chicken too. However, the prices are tourist gift shop too. Think $10/lb for asparagus, $18/lb for chicken thighs, $10 for a dozen chicken eggs, $14/lb for ground beef, etc. I eventually just looked through their baked goods and noted the bread was date stamped that it was baked 2 days prior and priced at for a $14 loaf of sourdough. My favorite Portland bakeries all offer freshly baked (as in that same day) sourdough and other loaves for $9-$12. Anyhow, I ended up choosing some local brownies and which looked good but ended up being chalky, dry and clearly several days old. I'd love to see a larger selection of prepared foods to enjoy on the pretty back patio too. They just had a bunch of those pre-packaged sandos & wraps like one finds in an airport. Why not add a little pizza oven and or grill for weekends? Anyhow, there's much potential with such a pretty place like this one but it isnt quite there enough for me to make the 30min drive from Portland again.

When inside the large red shop, so many options of local food, beverage & handcrafted items for sale: cookies, pastries, candy, honey, fresh milk, meat, wine, coffee, sandwiches, chips & so much more. Once done wandering thru or shopping, there is the expansive views out back where one can picnic on the grass, sip some beverages or munch on goodies purchased inside. Also available are table & chairs on the side of the market structure that allows for looping back inside or towards the front parking lot. The grounds are nicely manicured with a variety of beautiful specimen plants to be in awe of. Hopefully you'll go with intent to slow down, relax, linger & enjoy this jewel of a place to visit. I buy a lot of bulk items for meal prep- things like oats, flour, beans, rice, vegetables, etc. The prices here are awesome; in store, you'll pay about $2 a pound for oats (store brand) but here it's $1 for Bob's Red Mill organic oats. Same deal for other dry shelf goods- as someone getting into cheaper meal prepping, this really is the place to go for such deals. The store itself is very basic- concrete floors, high shelving, barebones customer service. It is meant for business customers but I come here for my house- they also carry industrial/commercial strength cleaners, kitchen equipment and janitorial supplies. They don't carry electronics, entertainment, prepackaged meals, clothing or anything else of that sort. I don't mind though- I just go elsewhere for those types of items. Depending on what you value, I'd say it is definitely worth coming to this store either as a business owner or individual.

This location is about 10 minutes away but since they are located in the same strip mall as a baker & Soice, I take the ten minute ride to hit up both and Gurton's Plant store. Basics has gorgeous, organic produce and fresh veggies. Prices are higher than a big box grocery store, more in line with New Seasons. The house made baked goods, while not a huge selection, has many tasty items. They typically have scones (maple pecan are fab), pound cakes, large cookies, fruit turnovers and brownies. The meat department has really good cuts of meat and sausages. The deli counter has various side salads, huge slices of lasagna, pasta salad, roasted brussel sprouts, Italian sandwiches, and other delicious prepared food. Today I picked up two spanakopita for a quick dinner along with a salad. At $2 each, they made for an economical and satisfying meal. Pantry, pasta, crackers, cleaning products, beverage and wine aisles are spacious, clean, well organized and always neat. Makes it easy to find whatever you need. Many items are from local providers which I also appreciate. Please put a Basics down in the S Waterfront! We have no grocery stores in walking distance.
