I first contacted Gary when I was moving to LA two years ago because my teenage son would desperately need a haircut by the time we settled in. But for this review, in light of the coronavirus / COVID outbreak, I wanted to highlight how well Gary has been handling the situation. Personally, I was on the fence about whether I wanted to risk getting a haircut in the first place. However, I was put at ease by how thorough and safe Gary is. Masks are required and your temperature is read outside before you are let in. Gary himself wore an N-95 mask while cutting my hair. Just had my hair cut by Gary and I was very impressed. The whole experience from start to finish was extremely professional, and I am so happy to have found a talented hair stylist like Gary in my neighborhood. I've been told that I have difficult hair to cut. For one, my short Asian hair sticks straight out which means any imperfections are clearly seen. In addition, the back of my head is pretty flat leading to many other inexperienced stylists to accentuate this undesirable feature. Gary, however, almost immediately addressed it and did a great job manipulating shape to compensate for the flatness. I deeply appreciate his methodical approach and precise cuts. Gary also proved to be a wealth of information on the topic of hair health and maintenance. He asked me very specific questions to gain an overall understanding of my hair and gave me very useful tips on how I can improve on my existing routine. First off, Gary does a great job. He listens, he's patient, and he's happy to make adjustments on the fly. I've always felt that I got exactly the cut I asked for when I leave his salon. With regards to safety during the pandemic, Sheveaux takes every precaution imaginable to make the client feel at ease. I read really good reviews about Gary and I set up an appointment with him for the first time in August 2016. That went really well. he was responsive and listened etc. So I was super happy and had my haircuts (almost once a month) starting then. Things were going well... There was this one time in November when after he cut my hair I found it a little too short. And the message I sent him afterwards was something like: "It looks it went a bit too short this time. I wanted on the sides of my head to go from 5-4 i think. Probably because I did not explain it well we went to a 4-3. I am messaging you this time around right after so that next time I won't forget what to tell you" (This is not the exact message. but it was very close to it.) I did not get any reply from Gary which was okay with me. Then comes December, time for a haircut and I message him 3-4 days in advance for an appointment and he tells me that "for my requirements I need to find someone else". It caught me by surprise. Of course, he can choose who he wants to work with. But he could have at least told me much earlier that he has made up his mind that he doesn't want me. This way I would have had the opportunity to look around for someone else. In the end, I ended up scrambling and found out someone who now I am really happy to work with. So to conclude: Gary does an okay job listening and tries (really hard) to keep it nice and polite. However, I found him a bit of a fussy stickler in terms of any feedback I gave him. I agree he will do a good job. But then you have to stop complaining in case it goes wrong once... well, at least if you don't want to be turned down last minute. I regularly frequented Gary's salon while I was an undergraduate student at UCLA, and after graduation when I no longer lived in the area, I still came into his place - braving the infamous I-10 highway traffic in the process. I thought it was worth it. Gary is one of best hairdressers I've ever had. Gary is a very meticulous as a stylist. He is very detail-orientated, and in some ways, a perfectionist. This is great. Gary really cares about the quality of his work and the satisfaction of those of us who come to him. He is very knowledgeable about men's hair and he is kind-spirited. He loves his job, and you can see that his heart is in what he does when you are sitting in that chair. Gary is not a robot, and he won't treat you like one. He has always been human and personal to me, and I think he will be the same with you too. I notice that a lot people who work in the hair industry - any profession, really - generally tend to go through the complacent day-to-day motions with their routines and clients. It's just a job to them, and they're just there to do it. That's understandable, very understandable, as it is in all of us to an extent. I feel that Gary goes beyond what is expected. For instance, one time I tried booking an appointment with him, but he told me that he was unavailable, because he was taking a few days worth of classes on master level hairstyling techniques. I think this says a lot about Gary and his sincere, genuine interest in trying to continually master his craft. He's his own boss, and no one is making him do that; he genuinely just wants to learn how to cut your hair well, and better. If you're in the Westwood area, I'd recommend Gary. Get a good sense of what you want, and be prepared to be able to communicate that. Sometimes what we think are the failings of our hairdressers may in part be our own failures. It's a team effort! I've been going to Gary for years now and he really is as good as it gets. I've struggled in the past finding the right person to cut my hair but I've been very happy with Gary. The ambiance is great; he pays a great deal of attention to how he decorates his salon and always has good music playing in the background. Gary booked me quickly and on a very short notice late at night during a hair emergency. He was also very understanding when I got lost. He has a very charming salon space. He is very knowledgeable and answered a lot of random hair questions that didn't relate to my cut. His pricing may seem high if you've never had an individual stylist before, but from the experience I have had, he is priced very fair for what you get.
