Been lucky enough to have found Gary over a year ago in the South Bay. Was excited to hear he was adding a location on the westside (closer to work). Went to the new studio space in Westwood just over a week ago. Was a great experience, easy to find, reasonable parking, and loved the new private space. A little more cramped than his space in the South Bay, but the ability to close the door on the outside world more than made up for it. I initially started going to Gary years ago because my previous stylist stopped cutting hair to raise her newborn and a friend recommended him to me. Since I started getting haircuts from Gary, I've basically followed him from previous locations to now, his own salon because I trust him with my hair. I know hair grows back, but I think that says a lot about Gary's skills as a stylist and the amazing service he provides consistently. He is friendly, welcoming and always professional. I'm typically trying a new hairstyle or variation of hairstyle I have or had. Gary listens exactly to what I want but also gives recommendations or advice for small changes to make it suit me. I love how keen he is to details, is never in a rush and allows you to make changes if you want. (i.e. make the length of hair shorter or add more texture in length, etc.) My last visit to him, I had basically destroyed my hair. I color my own hair on and off, but I really processed and pushed my hair past its limit which I've never done before. Being hair trendy can have its drawbacks! I knew that I would have to cut my hair short and found a style that I felt I would be comfortable and happy with. I made an appointment, Gary evaluated my hair. He tried his best to save as much of the length as he could by giving a complimentary treatment, then by being gentle while taking his time cutting my hair but we both knew at the end it had to be chopped off. Being a superb stylist that Gary is, he still managed to keep the shape and style of the cut I wanted only making the length on top at the crown slightly shorter. The basics of the cut was a modern take on the bowl-cut with an undercut at the front sides faded shorter to the mid side by the ears and back (basically trendy Korean hair style if my description isn't good). I ended up not liking the faded aspect of the overall style from the photos and how it translated on me; we both agreed it wouldn't look as great once grown out. No question asked, Gary happily changed the sides to a full disconnected undercut and reshaped the back of the style to be cleaner and more uniform to the overall style and shape. I was able to keep some length for the bangs as that's usually a must in a hairstyle for me. It looks so much greater than I could have asked for. Obviously, I highly recommend going to him as a loyal customer these last four or maybe even five years now. I don't write many yelp reviews now-a-days, but I think Gary deserves every ounce of positive feedback he receives. To add, his salon is trendy, completely relaxing and the experience there with him is always overall very positive. If you park within the building at Phenix Salon Suites of Westwood, parking can be validated as well. Check it out, make an appointment, it's completely worth it. See you next time Gary! read more

I just want to go on record that I only post reviews for either extremely bad businesses or the best of the best. I have really difficult hair to cut as it is thick and bone straight, so most stylists have issues working with it, or give me a hatchet job. Over the years I have been to most of the top hair salons and stylist in the Beverly Hills and West Hollywood area since I was in high school. I went to Allen Edwards, Tovar Salon, Jose Eber, Salon Menage a Trois, Giuseppe Franco Salon, Umbertos, Jonathons, Frederic Fekkai, Gammine Salon, Alon Shalom, and after many bad haircuts and a few excellent ones I decided to stay closer to home. In the South Bay I tried Stephen D'Amico @Hush Hush Salon, who gave a great cut but appointments were difficult to schedule as he was out of the salon giving Brazillian Blowout demos a lot! A friend of mine after hearing my horror stories referred Gary, promised me it would be the best haircut I would ever get and the a la mode on the pie was Gary's great personality and patience (especially dealing with me.). I called and made an appointment with no fuss no muss, super easy and efficient. When I arrived at the PRIVATE Salon Studio I was AMAZED, it's the same set up a celebrity stylist gives his prized and famous clients in their private studio workshop in the salon away from all the riff raff but without the Beverly Hills prices!!! Gorgeous design with a peaceful, private atmosphere, no dealing with lots of other stylist and clients making noise, or chemical smells coming from the other stylists (I have bad asthma so this is a huge perk.). Because of the privacy and ambiance you feel rejuvenated afterwards. Even though the Private Salon Studio is a huge perk, Gary is the shining star of it all as he is beyond friendly and accommodating, not to mention technically versed in all techniques from Barbering using clippers to scissor over comb and full on precision scissor cuts including chipping and texturizing, I would go to him no matter where he was. I was amazed how versed Gary was at cutting my difficult hair thickness and working with how my hair grew and the straightness. Usually even the most seasoned stylist can not cut my hair that well, usually takes 3 or 4 appointments before they can get the hang of it, sometimes it just does not happen and I move on and try another. After the first appointment with Gary, I was amazed at how perfectly he cut my hair to my facial dimensions and features, and on the first try!!! I got so many compliments on his cut and the way he styled my hair that I immediately texted Gary to thank him and let him know as this has never happened before. I am now a confirmed loyal customer and going this week to my 4th appointment for another amazing cut. I would have no issue referring any of my relatives or friends to Gary as he can cut/color or do chemical work on Men's or Women's hair as he is technically versed and super creative. Update: 11/04/2014 I went and got my hair expertly cut and could not be more ecstatic and happy with the cut and style, that's consistency!!! I actually forgot to mention that I had booked an appointment for color, as I started to prematurely gray when I was 18. I had been using this one chemical technician for years, and it's hard for me to really trust someone with my color as I have had some really bad color jobs (1.Lacking attention to details like not covering all the hair framing my face and sideburns so you end up with some gray roots exposed. 2.incomplete coverage as some of the grays where not processed completely, so they looked translucent/or tinted. 3 chemically damaged hair aka burnt/over processed. 4. Technically not versed where they try to change your color a bit and somehow you end up with color pigment build up where instead of a color it looks dark/blackish). My colorist came from Northridge, so it was a bit of trek for her and a long evening usually as it was a house call and she would hang out afterwards as to unwind a bit before her long drive home. Well Gary did such a bang up job on cutting and styling my hair I decided to grill him a bit about his coloring experience and products he used as my colorist had been using SCHWARZKOPF ESSENSITY (90% natural and no ammonia.) and I wanted to make sure the product he used would be compatible as to avoid pigment build up. I also thought it would be super convenient to just get my hair cut and color by the same person and simultaneously. Well Gary colored my hair to perfection, matched my color and maybe even improved it, looked super healthy shiny, actually did a better job than my long standing colorist :( So how can I argue with perfection, I am sorry to say I will not be using my old colorist, but good news is I have found a better one :) In my book I rate Gary a Platinum 5 star cutter, colorist and stylist, the best of the best. I have found my go-to hair guy! Gary is the best--he is extremely professional, talented, friendly, fun and down-to-earth, all at the same time. I have been with Gary for almost a year now and he has always given me the best shampoos, cuts, hair care/product advice, and even a keratin treatment. Most recently, he has transformed my boring shoulder-length hair into a unique, asymmetrical bob/pixie that is stylish and also perfect for my lifestyle (i.e., easy to maintain)! He also cuts my husband's hair which is thick, coarse, and almost unmanageable. I made sure I was a little early for my appointment and I was in the chair a minute within our set time, he was very respectful of my time and wanted to make sure that he gave me as much time as possible. My favorite stylist Gary recently opened a private suite at Phenix so I had to visit him. The suite was well decorated with a super cool chair that reclines, and the color on the walls is amazing and I felt right at home. As always, Gary did a masterful job with my hair. He cut my hair to the prefect length and found the perfect color to cover up those hairs that decided to grow without any color to them.
