When I heard Shimmy Shack had a pre-grand opening that was advertised on VegMichigan, I decided to stop by and see how the food was. I ordered simply the Classic Burger along with Chili Fries. (As always when trying a new place, I have a deer in headlights moment when I'm overwhelmed with what to order or I'm caught between two items and can't decide! Argh!) The surprising thing was that after I ordered, the wait time was nearly non-existent. They brought out to me a few moments after my order. There was a lot of diligent young ladies working there and they seemed to be efficient and the cashier was kind and friendly. Upon receiving my paper wrapped burger I was a little disappointed with the size of the burger, it was the size of a orange and it reminded me of an orange because of the rounded bun. The chili fries were a good size but if I'm paying $6 for it, I expected a little more portion-wise. The burger tasted good, and the chili fries too, but now that I think about it, perhaps I should've ordered the falafel pita or the Southwest Burger (but if it's the same size as the burger I ordered, I would reconsider.) I love the fact that everything is vegan, but for the price to portion ratio, the taste alone will not cut it for me. But Shimmy Shack gave a worthy effort. I ordered the Shimmy Coney and my girlfriend got the chili cheese fries. The chili cheese fries were pretty good, a solid 4/5. There were a lot of good flavors going on and it was well seasoned. The toppings were a bit slippery and didn't adhere to the fries very well, but that wasn't too bad of a problem. My coney was probably the worst food truck dish I've ever had. As I walked away from the truck, I spotted a hair on top which I pulled off--whatever. One hair isn't going to gross me out enough to not eat something to be completely honest. The dog itself was incredibly rubbery and didn't improve upon chewing. The inside was a bit like chewing a wet bagel. The chili was also very bland. I start walking to the garbage to throw away my half eaten dog when I make a horrifying discovery. I pulled a hair out of my mouth in the chewed food. Maybe, invest in some hair nets? read more

Blah. I had the Falafel Pita. There were 3 tiny pickle slices with a few pieces of shredded lettuce, sauce, and three falafel balls. The pita was so dry and hard that I ended up throwing away the bread and eating the falafel with a fork. The person taking my order recommended this as their specialty, so I guess the best I've had there is 2 stars only. Wherever I see the Shimmy Shack truck, I get in line. I haven't had anything from this truck that wasn't good. The dairy free shakes are just as good, if not better than "real' shakes. My favorite is the dark chocolate. The chili fries are delicious. My father even loved them (when I told him they were vegan, he accused me of tricking him!). The sauces all have well developed flavor. As a person with a dairy allergy. It's awesome to have a food truck who doesn't have cross-contamination issues. I'm a huge fan of Shimmy! I just had my first Shimmy experience recently and it was definitely positive! Yes, I spent an insane amount of money. But the shakes were delicious and so fresh (especially strawberry) The sauces were really tasty and definitely enhanced the fries taste, didn't overpower it. The falafel wrap had a much better pita than most places. It was fresh and didn't compete against so many other falafel pitas out there, it was a great standalone. I loved the strawberry shake and even more for not using dairy in it. The falafel sandwich was delicious. The garlic sauce was really tasty. I didn't much care for the gluten free pita, but I admit I would eat it again. I ordered the half and half fries to go with it (regular and sweet potato). They were sprinkled with a delicious seasoning. The sweet potato fries were crispy and the regular fries could have stood a few more minutes in the fryer. I would definitely eat here again. Shimmy Shack should come to Ypsi some time. It would be great if Ypsi could get something similar going like Mark's Cart's in Ann Arbor with Shimmy Shack on board. read more

LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! I first tried Shimmy Shack around five years ago way before I became a vegetarian. Shimmy Shack travels around the Detroit and Ann Arbor area on a regular basis, and lucky for me they post their schedule online! I like to pick up my Mom and go have lunch together since it's her favorite too. Shimmy's food is 100% vegan but with an Americanized theme, like burgers and shakes! Even though I have allergies to dairy and don't eat meat I can eat anything on their menu. This time was no exception, I picked up my Mom and we ventured a mile from her work to find the office building that Shimmy Shack was parked in. I decided to try the original (lentil) burger with fries and a cookie monster shake! The shake stole the show, it literally tasted like a monster cookie! Even if you're not into trying anything else, you should try the cookie monster shake!!! My Mom ordered the southwest burger with sweet potato fries and a cookie monster shake of her own. Because we eat so little we even had enough for dinner later that night! read more

I LOVE food trucks! I think the concept is super fun and I love the idea that I can sometimes have my favorites near my house...and sometimes near my work. The rallies are fun...lots of different foods to choose from. When I heard about the Shimmy Shack, I was so excited to try it. I went vegan about 6 months ago, so anything new in that category makes me excited. I visited them at the rally in Allen Park. Everything on the menu looked fantastic. The girls running the truck were super nice! I ended up getting the falafel burger and fries. Everything was terrific! The burger was very tasty and the garlic sauce was great. They gave you a choice between regular or sweet potato fries or a combo. I got the regular (I'm not a huge fan of sweet potato fries). They were fresh cut and fried to perfection! They even had different vegan sauces for the fries. I got the curry mayo and it was sooo good! I will definitely try them again...and next time I will get a shake too! read more

Visited this food truck when they were at a business in Dearborn recently serving lunch. Backstory: I have been wanting to try this truck out for a while now, but most attempts had been stopped due to other constraints. I did have a slight cold on this day, but dont feel like it affected my ability to taste. I ordered the Falafel Burger, with mixed fries, and a shake. Service was decently paced considering the style of food, and was very friendly in every step of the way, they even gave me a cookie sample!!!!!! I will break this one down in steps. The shake was Banana, and while adequate, I wasnt exactly wowed by it. It comes premade in a cup, im pretty sure from some fridge unit on the truck. This makes sense as a food truck doesnt really have a lot of room or time to hand make every shake, its just not my preferred method. The fries were delicious and well seasoned, both types. Both sauces I tried were also amazing, especially the garlic sauce. Speaking of that sauce, it was smothered all over the falafel, which was good, but the burger was just missing one thing from putting it on the level of regular falafels: the pickles/pickled turnips. i loved the burger, although not as crispy as falafels generally are, the sauce was of course amazing, and it had lettuce and tomato, but I did feel in the end it needed the pickles/pickled turnips. I could order some dill chips on it next time, but I think what would set this burger over the top would be a diced mix of pickles and pickled turnips on top! the portions were small, but for the type of food and quality, it was decently priced. I think it was 8 for a combo burger and fries, perfect lunch portion if you ask me. I cant wait to try out their other offerings next time!!!!! read more

I was so excited to see a vegan food truck and wanted to give them a try. I ordered the nachos which came with a vegan cheese, guacamole, jalapenos, carrots, beans, and a salsa-like topping. It was $9 and the portion size was so tiny. The paper container easily rested in one hand. There was probably 10 chips inside that was just completely heaped over with the toppings. So that when I finished the chips I was still left with a half-full container of toppings. The vegan cheese was very stringy (unlike the typical smooth and creamy consistency of nacho cheese) and I couldn't dip my chips into it at all. I had to try to pull it apart with my hands and eat it with the chips but, when you are walking around an event (typical places that food truck cater) that task is pretty impossible and definitely impractical. Plus, they served it in a paper container and they don't drain the salsa or beans so there was about a 1/4 cup of liquid at the bottom of the dish. This soaked through the paper and started dripping all over me. I stood up walked 20 feet toward a trashcan to throw away the mess and before I could reach the trash the bottom of the paper container literally broke loose and the toppings fell through all over the floor. What an aggravation! Why in the world would you serve such soggy toppings on top of nacho chips and why would anyone choose a paper container to serve them into??? They may be vegan but they have no common sense when it comes to practicality of eating food out and about. Plus, their portion sizes are so tiny for the amount of food; I seriously felt ripped off. read more

The owner blew her reputation for me and many others at a benefit dinner for Sasha Farm by talking of herself, promoting her business, at length, over and over, and making the room full of people who paid $125 to attend, sit through a long video...wait for it...promoting her business. Got their veggie burger ($5) and order of fries ($4.75) at the Selfridge ANGB Air Show on the 8/19/2017 weekend. I will have to agree with the other reviews here as the lady taking my order (i guess owner) was snotty to me and not very friendly. She got my order ok, but she was not in a positive mood. The start of my eating started out rough also. When I opened up the wrapper, it had a hair in the veggie burger . I have since read the other Yelp reviews here and it is a common problem for this vendor. The fries were under cooked and the portion was small (did not even fill up the small container) That would not be a problem, if they weren't charging $4.75 each (ok if say $2.50 each) Anyway, as I am not a Vegan, my review of the burger is slanted a bit. They should call it a veggie patty or cake as there is no semblance of a burger/taste. It basically was a bean / lentil patty with to many different spices. The art'sy bun, cheese, and fixings on it were very good. When I ate this with just a small amount of the bean/lentil mix it was OK. Maybe this sandwich is great for a vegan, but to many spices made it a bit much for me. So 2-3 stars for the sandwich. 1 star for the rest of it. It all looked great, but attitude, hair, and taste, I would not go back to this vendor. read more

Rated 1 of 5 top food trucks in the US. How cool is that? I went to the VegMichigan summer festival last weekend, where the truck was one of the food vendors. LOOOOOOOOONG line for the food. Finally ordered after almost an hour in line. Ordered a coney, double hamburger and shake. Shake came out first and was almost gone by the time the coney & hamburger were made. I'm hoping that the portion size was scaled down for the festival, because if it wasn't ... what a small meal for a large price. Almost $20 for the 3 items. Coney was a small veg dog on an extremely hard bun (whole wheat perhaps). When you put the dog in first, topped by chili, it's bound to happen. The bottom of the bun broke when I took the first bite, spilling everything out into the plate. Wound up eating all the "deconstructed" coney parts separately. Hamburger was just as small, on yet another hard bun. Of course, the patty disintegated upon the first bite. Same as the coney, I wound up eating all the different ingredients separately. The food was good, just the construction was sorely lacking. read more

Just had the single burger today for lunch when they arrived at the local Farmer's Mare. It was THE best vegan burger I have eaten to date. The burger tasted like it was hot off the grill. Very yummy. I also had the regular fries, which were sprinkled with their special seasoning. However, there was one sweet potato fry in there, and I was able to taste that also. Both were great, but next time I'll try the sweet potato fries as a side. Definitely worth checking out! read more

The food is fine. This low score is for their business ethics. I hired them twice to work one of my events. The first time, they sold out of all of their food before the event was over. The workers thanked me profusely, apologized for running out of food, said they'd love to do another of my events if I'd have them, and that they'd make sure to bring extra food next time. The owner was not present, just employees. The owner did, however, email me afterward to thank me herself for the sellout and ask if I'd mind her doing more of my events. I didn't charge her for working this event, since it was her first time doing it. Ready for the good part? The second time I hired Shimmy Shack for one of my events, they were one of two trucks. This time, instead of doing the event free of charge, I asked them to pay me whatever percentage they deemed reasonable. The owner suggested 10% as reasonable. We agreed on this and signed a contract saying so. After the event, I discovered from the owner of the second truck (a veteran truck owner, highly trusted in the community) that the owner of Shimmy Shack was lying to him, claiming that they hadn't sold out or left early the previous time, claiming that it was a bad event, etc. I contacted the owner of Shimmy Shack to verify this and ask why she was lying to my other truck, not to mention to collect payment. The owner ignored my questions about why she was lying about my event to the other truck owner. She only responded to my request for payment, as agreed upon in our signed contract. Her response? She said she wasn't going to pay me. Think twice before hiring this company. read more

Finding a food truck that carries delicious vegan food is like striking gold! We discovered Shimmy Shack at Michigan Pride 2015. We ordered the falafal pita, the southwest burger, and the fries (half potato, half sweet potato) with Shimmy Sauce - all amazingly tasty and served with enthusiasm! The food was fresh and hot. I definitely got the impression that care is taken with each order. Waiting a few minutes was well worth it - and better than eating something that has sat under a heat lamp forever. My friend also enjoyed one of their famous strawberry shakes. He said no one would even know it was non-dairy - absolutely yummy. Thank you, Shimmy Shack, for offering vegetarians and vegans a nice menu of "food truck" fare that is high quality, flavorful and scrumptious! Hopefully we'll run into you again soon. read more

I worked for Shimmy Shack for two seasons. The first season went well with a few bumps along the way but the second season was the absolute worst. Shimmy Shack was a brand I really loved at first but after working with the owner more I realized I wasn't going to last. As someone who has spent 5 years+ working in food service I was never forced to do things I had to do when working on this truck. I worked every station but primarily the grill. On multiple occasions I realized many of the buns we used for various menu items were moldy. I brought it to the owner's attention and she told me to rip the mold off as best as I could and use them because they were the only buns she had. I didn't agree with that decisions me often became frustrated. I threw away many buns and was sruitinized for it. In any other restaurant ran by people with good ethics, that would NOT have been tolerated or acceptable. The owner is very snotty and not pleasant to work with at all. We worked an event in Detroit July 2017. That night it began to rain heavily and the generator kept shutting off. She made the other employee stand in the rain beside it and continuously start it back up. The Fire Marshall indicated it was a safety hazard and told her we needed to fix the issue or shut it down. Needless to say, neither happened. Instead of ensuring the safety of her employees, she expected us to continue working. I became agitated as I kept burning myself on the grill because it was dark outside and generator was constantly shutting off. Eventually, I told her I couldn't do it anymore and cleaned up as best as I could and went home. I was notified by another employee that I was taken off the schedule as a result. I sent her an email expressing my frustration and concern regarding that night and instead of being an adult and taking my concerns into consideration she texted me and called me unprofessional for sending an email detailing my frustrations. I was in disbelief and disappointed in myself for putting up with the nonsense for so long. These are just few of many instances that transpired over time. I refuse to work with someone with no ethics or respect for their employees and do not support businesses that are run by people with nothing but self-interest. read more
