A little over a month ago, my friend was in the area and we spontaneously decided to get our hair dyed. We walked in without an appointment and asked if it was possible to get our hair dyed. Tracy and Yen accepted us and got us seated. I would definitely recommend calling in first to check availability (especially if there's a particular stylist you would like). We just got lucky! After we told them we would like Full Highlights + Haircut, they gave us a little color picker thing for us to choose from. I was trying to choose between Magenta and Purple for a specific shade I was interested in but Tracy let me know she could do/mix both! We went through the whole bleaching and dyeing process. They were really friendly and chatted with us a bit. It was funny and cute how they would turn my friend and I's chairs toward each other so we could talk face to face LOL. At the end, we needed to leave for an appointment with another friend so we asked that we come back another day for the haircut and they told us that was alright! I was busy with work for quite some time and came back a month later for a haircut with Tracy. She remembered me and honored the haircut (that I had forgotten I already paid for). reviewing for my mom: stay away. my mom has been a customer of 10 years and always tipped well. one time she made an appointment both her and my dad, and after waiting for my dad to finish his haircut, she was made to wait for NINETY minutes. she saw new customers being taken in nonstop and decided to never go again and I agree with her. also, they finish your hair as soon as possible aka twenty minutes (she has short hair) and leave things uneven and ugly. My family has been coming here for over 27 years and we always receive compliments on our hair for the next few weeks after out visit with Johnny. Helen, and staff. When you are loyal to a hair stylist they will work their magic and help you style that will match your personality and style. Once in awhile my mom will come and sit for most of the afternoon on a weekday and let them work their magic. She always leaves with gorgeous highlights that help her feel refreshed for weeks to come. The studio is a very popular place to spend your weekend afternoons so if possible, visit on a weekday when you don't feel rushed. Always overestimate your visit and I promise you it'll be worth every moment. Always communicate your concerns with the staff whether it's in English, Chinese, or Vietnamese. As a loyal customer I couldn't help but eavesdrop on a few unhappy chats that lead to poor Yelp reviews and that's usually due to miscommunication. For example a mother makes an appointment for herself with Johnny but ends up up bringing her children on a busy evening. Mom asks if the kid are able to squeeze in for a cut and the staff agree. However since the mother is with Johnny, staff assume the kids are with Johnny as well so they attend to other customers. The children end up skipping meals and waiting for HOURS. This frustration could've been avoided if the customer clarified that her children's hair could be treated by other staff. Shing's is open right now during SIP - their hours on Yelp are reflective of their actual time. They are significantly busier on the weekends, and really quiet and slow on the weekdays, so if you want a hair cut and want to do it while there aren't that many people there, I recommend making time during your work day. I got my hair cut and aside from everyone wearing masks, and there being some partitions, there's nothing really ostensibly different re. covid protocol. Everything seems pretty clean, but there's still people waiting inside and there were at least 7-8 employees inside when I went. I asked to get all my dead ends cut off because my hair was pretty unhealthy. It ended up about 3 inches shorter than I anticipated. The stylist was polite and kind, and she styled my hair so that it was really cute but since then, I haven't been able to style it like she did and it ends up flipping in and out in all sorts of directions and I can't wait for it to get longer so I don't look so mullet-y. I went here for a simple trim. Did my research on Yelp and decided to give this place a try. I called to make an appt. but apparently you don't need one, unless it's for someone specific. The lady who picked up the phone said to just come in. I came in and was able to be seen right away by Danny. I really loved how he tended to my hair. Took his time with the trim, got rid of all the dead ends without cutting my hair off! I can always appreciate someone who take time on their work & make you feel valued. And can I also add that the cut only cost $33??! I have found my stylist. One more thing I'd like to add is, they did not shampoo my hair before the cut. I went for a scheduled haircut appointment with the owner Johnny. Since this was my first time at his salon, he suggested that instead of a haircut I should do a straight hair perm (Japanese perm). According to Johnny a straight perm would provide a good result for long layer hairstyle like mine, so I agreed. FYI, this is not my first time to have Japanese straight perm, I've done this twice in the past at different salons (2013 and 2015). So, Johnny convinced me; cancelled my haircut appointment and scheduled a new appointment for my perm procedure at a cost of $220 instead of the original $45 haircut. After the perm was done everything appeared fine at the salon. However, the following day I noticed my hair tips, 3 inches from the bottom felt fluffy, dried, burned and curly. I texted and stopped by Shing's salon because I wanted Johnny to see for himself. He said he can't control my hair, and told me to wait one month to do an oil treatment and trim a little bit to get the burned side. When I arrived home I texted Johnny to ask if his recommended follow on treatments would be a complimentary service from his salon to fix the perm. Until now (one week later) Johnny has ignored my text! He doesn't care about fixing his perm mistake after having upsold me from a $45 haircut to a $220 perm! read more

Obviously, I requested for Johnny as all these carazy yelper girls are recommending him. True enough, he was quite busy even on a regular Thursday afternoon. Even once I finally achieved a spot on the waiting list, people were comin' on in requesting for Johnny. The ladies who run the front desk are quite nice...if you're Vietnamese. I don't really look it, and they thought I was half-white. But once I started speaking, they instantly warmed up. I came here to dye and cut my hair! New year, new me. Don't know their names, but these two older women help dye my hair while Johnny was finishing up on his prior client. Friendly enough. Johnny was exactly what I expected. Professional, with an air of arrogance around him. Which isn't a bad thing - I felt like I had left my hair into safe hands. The guy knows what he's doing. I just wish I told him I wasn't half-white! The dye he gave me was waayyy to weak for my hair. He told me that Caucasians only require a lighter dosage of dye. Asians need a stronger amount - which is why my hair was only slightly tinted (Black to Dark Brown). Shoulda told him earlier. The good thing however, he is offering to fix it free of charge after a couple days. So I'm going to sit it out with what I have until then. BUT I am highly satisfied with my haircut! It's definitely something much different then I am used to. :) Oh! Also, you get a nice scalp massage along with your shampoo and conditioner job if you decide to get one. Overall, the dye and cut was $65 including tip. Which isn't so bad - considering I'll probably be returning to fix up my hair color. read more

I go here once a year to get a Japanese straightening perm. It depends on your hair length but the minimum is $180. From there, it increases by $20. I haven't had a haircut or perm from anyone else but Tracy. She's awesome at what she does and clearly enjoys her job. Last Saturday I got my hair trimmed at Shing's Hair Studio in Milpitas :) The stylist is Johnny, who is apparently very popular here on yelp. Supposedly he is so popular that many people travel a long way (ie Sacramento) to see him. When I went, the salon was pretty crowded, with about 3-4 people waiting. I waited for about 15 min even though I had an appointment. I didn't specify any stylist when I called, and just happened to be assigned to Johnny. I said to Johnny that he seems to be very busy that day, he said that this wasn't considered "busy", because if he is truly "busy", I'd have to wait in line for 2.5 hours...... I guess he is THAT popular... Johnny is very fast with his hands. At first I thought he was going to speed through my session but he actually spent quite some time making sure all the layers are even. There are bipolar reviews about him, and he seems to be the most talked about stylist at Shings. I can see how some might think that he is rude, but I think he's just busy and doesn't care to be the politest person. Overall, I liked my hair cut. I said I only wanted a trim, and I didn't need to stress that I don't want to cut off too much, he knew somehow :) He also curled my hair at the end and commented that I look a bit Japanese with the hair, LOL. They charged me $30 for the cut which I thought was reasonable. 4 stars (instead of 5) because of the wait. read more
