I went to Shining Star Kids Hair Salon with my 5-year-old for the second time, and unfortunately, I will not be returning. First, when entering the salon, there was no greeting or acknowledgment, and it was unclear who would be doing my child's hair aside from the name listed on my booking. Professionalism and communication were lacking from the start. Second, some of the stylists have negative attitudes, which is unacceptable in a space that caters to children. My daughter had her hair braided by a stylist named Tiffany, who showed very little patience. She repeatedly complained that my daughter wasn't holding her head still and became visibly frustrated. Rather than maintaining composure and professionalism, she started shutting down, stopped braiding my daughter's hair, and got on her phone, behaving immaturely and unprofessionally as if she were the child. Her behavior was disgusting, and after finishing my daughter's hair, she acted as if she were mad at her. The energy in that salon is very strange for adults who claim to specialize in braiding children's hair. As an educator who works with children daily, I know that patience, empathy, and understanding are essential, especially when working with young children. You never know if a child has a disability or other challenges that affect their comprehension or ability to follow directions. If a stylist is not comfortable working with children or lacks the temperament for it, perhaps this is not the right profession for them. Overall, this experience was disappointing and unacceptable. I hope the salon addresses these concerns and ensures all staff are trained to interact with children in a patient, kind, and professional manner. read more

This is the best braiding salon for kids! My daughter has been getting her hair braided here since she was 3, the ladies are gentle and always do a great job! At first, my daughter was very tender headed and wasn't used to sitting still for long periods of time, but they've taken their time with her and now she is a pro! I recommend if you have younger children, brings snacks and an iPad. read more

Many of these stylists are extremely rude and unprofessional. One particular stylist talked terribly about me in front of my child and complained about doing her hair the entire time. They do not have the patience required to be a kids salon. At lease 4 of my friends have had the same experience and folks from our school will not be going back. read more

Jasmine did my 4 & 6 year old daughters hair and let me just say this ... she is AMAZING! She was very gentle and caring with both of my daughters. She engaged in conversation with both my daughters and I knew she was very genuine. She allowed my daughter to play on her phone while she braided and she even gave me pointers on how to treat my kids hair for better growth. Unfortunately my daughter's hair broke off really badly after she got her style done. I tried deep conditioning it almost daily and she still had her ends snapping for about a week afterwards. I realized that it probably had to do with the fact that they blowdry on medium/high heat before styling and brought this up to the salon. They said they had one stylist who works without heat and I tried for weeks to book her but she was always booked up. So I went back to a regular stylist who uses heat and brought up my concerns. I asked them -- borderline begged -- not to use heat, but they refused because they said, "It makes the style neat." I told them that I do not care about neatness if it means that my baby's hair will be snapping off. They started blaming me and saying her hair is snapping because I don't detangle it. Mind you my daughter is 4 and has lots of thick, healthy hair that is already back length. They did her hair again, using heat again, and again after the style was done her ends started snapping. When I spoke with them the blamed me again and told me that it was because I deep conditioned her hair a day after she put the style in. Let me say that again. The owner told me that my daughter's hair was snapping because I had deep conditioned her hair.... Like, at this point Shining Star has to be honest about the fact that they seem to care more about neatness than hair care. It is not a big secret that a lot of black hair cannot stand up to heat. If a child's hair can stand up to the heat, great for them. But options are needed for mothers who DO NOT WANT TO USE HEAT on their children's hair. It is crazy to me that a haircare salon would give a mother a hard time because she wants to PROTECT her child's hair from heat. Like... really? Aside from this I will say that they are a very professional salon. Punctual, good prices, beautiful styles and beautiful space. If they change their policy and introduce some no-heat styling options I will definitely be back. But until then I can't keep risking my baby's hair. read more

This salon is fantastic! I will be coming regularly from the Bronx to Brooklyn to do my daughters' hair. My youngest one is a cry baby and drama queen. She was true to form and the stylist handled her with compassion and class. At the end she was beaming and shouted "I will come back again." She was complemented all the way home and now her head size is too big for her little body. You now have a loyal customer. Shining Star is clean, stylish, modern and easy to get to. It's a new salon and I wish them all the luck in the world. They are far better than all the other kids salons in the neighborhood. read more

I take my girls to the Bed-Stuy location and couldn't be happier to have a kid salon that not only does a fabulous job and is nearby but takes appointments as well! I can't tell you how important it is to have an appointment system for kids. I can't fathom doing it any other way. Who has time to be put on a list and then sit around all day not knowing when you'll get called or even hoping you get a call!? I take my hats off to those parents because that certainly takes a lot of patience. Additionally, the stylists are friendly, easy going and handle their hair gently with care. The owner is wonderful and a very easy, down to earth businesswoman. She will work with you to try to accommodate your schedule if you're having issues. I don't really leave reviews but this young lady Ms. Anna did an amazing job on my daughters head. People don't understand a child's head should not be pulled and yanked like they aren't still children. My child sat still and kept giving me a thumbs up like no hard pulling mommy. The girls here are amazing!!! They are very patient and possess the perfect skill set to cater to kids. Kid friendly environment with an old time favorite movie Maltilda playing. The braids were very neat and lasted more than 2 weeks. Not to mention they use Aveda products which contains no sulfates or harmful chemicals! Definitely my daughter New go to place! read more

Let me start by sayin my daughter has been getting her hair braided here for two years. They are affordable, 80 dollars for freestyle braids"including hair added in is reasonable". I personally wash and detangle my daughters hair at home prior, simply because her scalp is sensitive. I save her the pain and the stylist the amount of work. A very clean salon with professional braiders who are attentive and careful braiding my daughters hair(even developed a close relationship with a former braider).The owner is extremely professional and reassured that my daughter felt comfortable after her hair was detangled the first time, they are organized and never had to wait an extreme amount of time.If for any reason it is not doable)they will inform you. I was really excited to take my daughter to get her hair braided at this salon. The week prior I walked in to make an appointment for the following week. First the appointment was cancelled/rescheduled the day of, for the next day. Ok no problem I understand things happen and I appreciated they told me before I arrived. The day of my daughters appointment I called to let them know I was running 30 min late. The owner said sure no problem we are running a "little" behind. Our appointment was for 7pm, we arrived at 7:30pm. The salon seemed full of kids. We patiently waited, an hour passed, I asked when was my daughter expected to be serviced, the owner said oh we're behind should be about another "hour or less" mind you it was already 8:30pm. So based on what she said I expected my daughter to be serviced about 9:30pm. 9:30 came and went and about 10pm I asked again when is my daughter expected to be seen. At that point more kids stroll in the salon and I was told all those kids were ahead of my daughter. UNACCEPTABLE!!!! To make a long story short my daughter was served at 1AM .... YES 1 in the morning!!!!! WTF with no apologies and a VERY nonchalant attitude. The only reason I gave 2 stars is because the stylist did a good job. But the fact that we had to wait nearly 6hours with a scheduled appointment is UNACCEPTABLE!! If it was a walk-in I would justify the wait, but not with an appointment. And the worse part is no accountability at all. They knew my daughter wouldn't be seen for HOURS, they clearly over booked and/or put clients in front of her. Very unprofessional and left a VERY bad first impression. It's unfortunate I was hoping to find a salon I can regularly take my daughter to. read more

I took my daughter to the Flatbush location today. I was so impressed! My daughter is very tender headed and the stylist handled her gently and with care. The stylist listened to my daughter's requests and did an amazing job with her hair! I've never seen my daughter so happy after having her hair braided. Her braids are gorgeous but even more importantly she left happy and tear free. I love that they make appointments. We will definitely be going back and I would recommend Shining Star to anyone! read more

I called last minute to get an appointment for my daughter on a Wednesday . Not sure why but I was surprised to find out that I was able to get an appointment same day. Yay! I heard there was 2 locations one in Flatbush and Bed-Stuy and I opted for the Bed-Stuy location. The salon is very pretty, clean and modern and located at the corner of Ralph and Hancock Street. There are bench seating along one wall of the salon. There are are 3 stylist chairs and a hair washing sink and a dryer. I was able to pick the style I want from the salons instagram page and the stylist went to work immediately. All the girls working were very friendly and most importantly my daughter who hates to get her hair done thought that they were gentle and did her hair very pretty. I asked her if she would want to come back and she said "Oh yes!" Afterwards I went onto the website and saw how easy it is to book online so next time that's the route I will take of note they do require a credit card on file but you are not charged unless you don't cancel in time or miss your appointment all together. We will definitely be returning! read more
