I was frantic trying to get a walk-in hair salon today, and my husband called this number and happened to get thru. From the time I walked in I felt the warmth. The manager got right to removing my weave and just engaging me. I got a deep tissue wash and guess what, A free hot steam!!! the best part was having the owner of Soween do my hair herself and gave me exactly what I asked for... a short bob hairstyle. I used to live in the neighborhood and moved to NJ a few years ago but anytime I want my hair braided I come here! I've tried other places but this is by far the best quality work I've experienced. You get what you pay for and here you get talented stylists, a clean shop with an even cleaner bathroom and fricken A/C! All the ladies I've seen here walk out looking fabulous - including myself. Get there when the shop opens and there is a good chance you'll be one of the first seated (there are always quite a few customers - especially on the weekend!) otherwise you'll be a mercy of the client's style that's ahead of you and have to wait until someone's free. Rude as hell. Zero customer service. No hello, no goodbye and plenty of attitude. I was told first come first serve, so I get there before they open at 10. Only 1 person in front of me and I'm told I'd be next 1.5hrs and TWO other customers later (who had "appointments"), they tell me I can make an appointment for the following Saturday at 11. So here I am, the following Saturday at 11AM. No hello, rolled eyes when I ask for toilet tissue for the rest room AND no stylist to do my hair. 1.5hrs later, I just walked out. Oh and they price on how they feel. I tried to wait it out because they do braid well, but the attitude, zero regard for time (or appointments), is ridiculous. They given Africans a bad rep for sure. I am writing this review because I really thought I found a good hair stylist. The owner Soween, did my hair twice; however, the last time wasn't a great experience for me. I got some cornrows going back, which is my usual style due to the type of work that I do. I got my hair done in early February and taken my braids out on February 23, 2021. Upon finishing, I felt the back of my hair because it felt so tender and sore, to realize that I was feeling bare scalp, then I had my husband take pictures to see. The style that I received had given me bald spots, I was so upset because I always pay a good tip for getting my hair done. However, this time I paid for bald spots. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME I won't lie they can really braid hair. However no appointments it first come first serve. The open at 10am I was the fourth person to walk in at 9:55am and I left at 6:30pm. This also happen the last time I went I reached at 10:40 am to get 2 large cornrows didn't leave till 2pm. The will literally waste your time and give you a price based on how they feel no set model. When I came a week earlier to ask the price I was told $175. The lady who braided my hair told me $130 plus $20 for the hair the day of. Then the owner said no $150 plus $20 for the hair. There is no real price list is just what they decide after looking at you when you walk in. They do good work, but their customer service is terrible. They claim that they work on a "first come first serve" basis, but will take people that have made appointments before you. Even when I've called to make an appointment, I've been told that I didn't need one and that I could just walk in. However, like I said people with appointments get seen before. Then today (10/2/19), I come in to get box braids. I made an appointment on Sunday (9/29/19) and was told to come in at 10am. I arrived before 10. A walk-in, that apparently needed to get to the airport the very same day she needed her hair done, was seen before me and I was left waiting despite having made an appointment to be seen at 10. Also, the hairdresser in the second chair closet to the hair dryer was Incredibly rude and had a very nasty attitide when I mentioned that I had an appointment and tried to pass me off to another hairdresser. Let me say that I am never disappointed with my hair when I get it braided here. I forget my braider's name, but she is directly by the door as you enter, I believe the second chair!! If I could give her 5 stars, I would, because that's just how awesome she does my hair. This review is about the owner, Ngone, whose attitude is just nasty! Now my braider was doing my hair a little too tight and let's just say that my scalp showed it...so the braider next to me says something in her language to her and then proceeds to ask me..."is it too tight?" To which I answered,.."Yes!' Mind you, I wasn't even going to say anything, I was just going to eat it because I have extremely soft hair that makes it hard for the even most skilled African braider to grasp. In comes the owner, who sees the braid at the back of my head and didn't like it, so of course she mentions something to my braider in her language. My braider said something to her in her language to which the owner replied in English to ME, she said, "She have to hold the hair tight and if it mess up, that's your problem...don't come back here to fix...we won't fix it for you!" Wait...NGONE what? First of all, it's beyond my wildest thoughts who the hell she thought she was talking to. But here I am, in your shop (Not my first time), spending my hard earned money...and that's how you talk to me? Just rude!!!!!!!!! In addition, their prices are ridiculously high. I went to three places and showed them the pic of the hairstyle I wanted and all three said $75...Ngone and her posse charged me $100. So I was reading through the reviews and realized that most of the people did not use their brains. Everyone who has ever had to get their hair done by Africans knows it takes anywhere from 3-5 hours for box braids or twists. Cornrows anywhere from 1-2.5 hours. First off I came on a Saturday which everyone knows is the busiest day to get your hair done anywhere!!!! You need to be the first one in the chair on a Saturday or else you have to wait. Period. Otherwise make an appointment during the week you don't have to wait. I do agree that there needs to be a sign in sheet of people that come in after the first set of people on the weekends because last Saturday I came to get my hair done and Gyra said I'd be after a girl that was getting her natural hair braided but I ended up having to wait for another woman to get her hair done. I didn't mind because I ran errands while I waited and Gyra had a second person braiding so I was done while it was still light outside. The bathroom is the cleanest you'll ever encounter in an African braiding shop. The salon is also spotless because the owner gives licensing for cosmetologists so she sets the bar. I don't like to hurt a salon's reputation but I really have to tell you what I've been through. This salon deserves a negative star rating. First of all, they work on a first-come, first-serve basis. The system can possibly work but if this salon specializes in intricate braiding and twisting styles, they take about three hours or more to do. In that case, they need to set up an appointment system. So i get there along with six other ladies at ten o clock. Because I was there at ten but someone got there at nine fifty-nine, she got her hair done first. So, i waited till twelve thirty. The second girl got there before me as well and she was getting the Senegalese twists too. So again, i waited. And waited. Waited. Waited. Went home and got a snack. Waited. Waited. Went to a deli and got a delicious roll sandwich. And waited. Hubby and son came to visit me. Hubby feels bad that i've been waiting so long. Oh, let me tell you the time : it was seven thirty. And waited some more. In between, i met some nice customers. Many of them had said, if they were me, they would've left. And really, i should've. At least this review would've been a bit nicer. But no, its gonna get worse. It was eight o clock and the young woman that was getting the Senegalese twists was officially finish. I was beyond aggravated but i just wanted my hair done because i was going away on vacation. So the owner now says," don't worry, three stylists will twist your hair so it can be done faster." Hell to f***ing no. I didn't want my hair looking crazy. So i decided to get the style that i had before (check out my Sol photo, Tweg is the bomb) and in my heart, i felt it was a disaster waiting to happen. First, she rips through my hair with the freaking blow dryer like she was raking leaves. It hurt like hell and i told her to be gentle. She kept saying my hair was thick and nappy. Thanks for the compliment. Strike two was the braiding. She was doing it very tight. I told her i have a sensitive scalp. She said she wasn't braiding my hair tight and it doesn't look tight. How in the world you are gonna tell me that it doesn't look and feel tight? Marinate on that thought, Yelpers. She then begins the braiding session again and it doesn't get better. By this time, i am completely fed up. My hair was being pulled so much, you can see my scalp pulling back as well. I told her to take it out so i can go home. The owner and the stylist started speaking in their language. So the owner knocks off twenty bucks and give me some free bottle of some no name s"**t. They keep telling me to stay and even though, i should've left, i waited over seven hrs to get my hair done and i knew the shit wasn't gonna look right but i just wanted it done. Long story short, she did it lazily and like i said, it was freaking ugly. I paid, left no tip and walked home pissed off. My hair was so dry, she didn't put any oils or moisturizer in my hair and it was also lopsided. I actually had to fixed it to make it look half way decent but it really looked two weeks old. So i came to the conclusion, i will never step foot in this salon again. If you go, go at your own risk. read more

I found her to be very striaghtforward, she tells it like it is and she is very hands on with her employees to make sure that all the customers are satisfied and that their hair is done correctly and properly. As she was doing my hair she was explaining ro me what was wrong with my locs and what needed to be done to treat them and make them healthy which is exactly what i was looking for. I usually don't write reviews unless it absolutely warrants a good or bad review. I called the shop a few days ago to ask if they were open today(July 5th) and if you needed an apointment for my daughter to get her hair braided. The kind lady on the phone told me No appointment necessary and it's first come first serve and that they open at 10am. My daughter and I arrived at 9:15am and she was the first one on line. As People arrived later, they kept asking my daughter who was she here to see. We didn't have a specific person in mind as I was told "first come first serve" so we waited until the door open. Apparently two people had appointments with the two ladies that showed up to work. I asked the lady if it was first come first serve and she told me someone was sick and she couldn't do my daughters hair. She told me to come back at 3pm as she sucked her teeth with an attitude. I said "3pm"? It's only 10am and we were the first ones here. What happened to "first come first serve" and if I leave what assurances do you have that you will do it at 3pm? She said miss I told you I have this one and that one's hair to do ad it's going to take a few hours. We went back and forth with words as she was very rude, nasty and does not obviously believe in customer service. Sometimes if you are wrong, all it takes is an apology and tell the individual that you are working to solve the problem. I felt the exact opposite. I felt she had no regards to their company policy, no respect for me as a customer and basically just wanted to get rid of me because she had to many customers And not enough workers. I will never patronize a store that doesn't appreciate customer service or my money. NEVER believe Soween when she tells you first come first serve. They don't mean it. I have been going to Ngone off and on for 20 years. I will agree with one reviewer when they said that they need Appointments. I was so used to the first come first serve service that I got there for 10. To my surprise she did have an appointment. She explained that they are doing that now. She also had construction going on and I was informed that she was not taking clients that day. I was very distraught as I was there with my mom who wanted to get hair done as well. She knows where I live and how far I travel. She said " Ok you guys came a long way, I have this woman who is getting a simple style. If you want to wait, Ill call one of my girls and we can get started" While we waited she opened up her home to us and was very gracious to us. She started me at 3 and I left out at 8:45 with my hair done as well as my moms. She actually did us both!!!! My hair looks gorgeous and I have received MANY compliments on how it looks and the Diamond parts she made for my box braids. I have read many reviews and I will never discredit anyone else's experience but I have NEVER dealt with that. I even searched Yelp for another braid place due to these reviews during my off time when I was rocking a short do. I tried Mama's and I will not even get started in on that place. Went there for a simple style. Called the day before and I was told to cone at 10 by owner. She wasnt there when i got there abd when she finally showed up 2 hours later, she began braiding the hair of a customer who came way after me and another client. One of the other girls eventually began to braid my hair an hour later. Showed ther he picture if what I wanted. This place is by far the worst service ever I was told come at 10am first come first serve I waited for about four hours still no service when I asked when Soweeen would arrive I was told she's coming when she finally came it was 12:30pm she greeted everyone and left as I'm siting I realize it was longer than usually only to find out that she left to "park". She never returned, I asked one of the ladies what was going on would she be coming back I was told "she said she went to park I ask if she would be able to do my hair as I have been waiting four hours and people who came after me are now seated getting their hair done, she now tell me'"no I cannot do your hair I have too many people if you made appointment with me I do for you, you can go to someone else meaning another person within the shop at this point I'm furious after wasting my time for four hours and being seated without knowing anything. The women then calls Soween she report no answer however she is speaking in her language at this point I say I'm leaving she tells me I don't know she didn't answer another worker chimes in and say maybe she go and pray. It is now 1:30pm I have sat down for the majority of time no service. I will never ever go back to this place very unprofessional and poor customer service from the top management to the stylist. I wasted four hours in this fly infested place. These people are rude and have no customer service they are over priced and do not care about your time. Save yourself your money and time and do not support this franchise. I've never come across such BAD SERVICE as I did 08/17/18. Just TERRIBLE!!! Customer services at this salon is horrible. They do not value customers. When they do a good job on your hair everyone is happy however, when there's something wrong the owner as well as staff become very rude and instead of practicing good customer service they make you feel like you did something wrong. My last experience at this salon the owner began braiding Goddess braids for me as I requested. On the first braid it looked jacked up. I kindly informed her I did not like it. She got defensive and rudely took the braid out, asked me to pay "$15.00 for wasting her time and the hair", and had the nerves to ask me to come back the next day instead of fixing the problem. Now I've been going to this shop for about one year and this is the 2nd incident I had with the same results. Fool me once the blames on you fool me twice shame on me. This is the place I travel to from Queens to get my hair braided. If you want to be the 1st person to get your hair done, make sure you arrive 1 hour before the Salon opens up. Great job for my box braids. First time coming today. A lady named Miriam did my hair. It came out very neat and she took her time! Everybody does hair great in there from what I've seen. The only thing that I would recommend is an appointment book. If your going there for box braids or Senegalese twist or any hairstyle that requires time, PLEASE COME AT 10am SHARP. Please do not misunderstand...There are two top notch stylists in this salon, however the owner's attitude, inconsistent pricing system and wait times are hurting their reputation. I have come to Soween for almost two years (on and off) for my box braids. Each time I arrive, they remember me, remember the style I like, however the price is NEVER consistent, which I find disappointing considering my braids are always the same length and size. I recently decided to give them yet another chance. I arrived at 10:15AM. The salon opens at 10AM. 5 girls were already in seats with stylists so I would have to wait (completely understandable). What I did not appreciate was repeatedly being told that it would be an hour or so, when no one was available until 3PM. Yes, I waited 5 hours. I don't allow many ppl to style my hair, so I ADORE the two stylists I am always paired with, however they need set pricing, they should give out cash receipts, and should be honest with customers about estimated wait times. In addition, I have heard the owner speak poorly about customers (in English) after they have left her salon. Makes me wonder how she speaks about me after I leave. read more
