Even if the industry standard now, I expect more from them as a Detroit Metro native. === Here is the alleged Shinola "Guarantee" in pictures. Sent a pre-auth form with picture requesting repair. They approved it as repairable and asked me to ship it at my expense. Weeks later, they said they would send it out of state to an expert for a 6-8 week repair. Then without further messaging, UPS returns it with a "Not Serviced" notice. The clearly outsourced Customer Service rep's response to costing me $15 in shipping for nothing? A 10% discount on my next purchase. The cobbler down the street ended up fixing it for $15. I hope this review does not cost Shinola much more than the $15 I wasted sending it to them. I hope so because I'm not vindictive. It would be a shame if a deceptive, flawed customer service procedure managed to DISGRACE and tarnish the image of Detroit further through DISGUSTING business practices. Came to Shinola in the Cass Corridor region for their 10 year anniversary sale, and even with the sale, I can afford little to nothing here! But I still love coming here to window shop as everything is beautiful arranged and all of Shinola's products are so wonderful! The staff are always so welcoming and helpful when you come in. It gives the vibes of they might make commission off your sale, but they aren't trying to jump down your throats the way normal salesmen are, so I really appreciate that! My fondest memory at this Shinola is when I came here a couple years back because I have a leather Shinola dog collar that was a little too big for my dog's neck. I really loved the size of the collar still though, so came in to this Shinola and asked them to punch a few more holes into the leather for me so I had more options to cinch the collar tighter and fit my dog's neck better. They did it happily and also educated me on how best to take care of the leather as well - again, so helpful! Absolutely love it here! read more

I know you pay for quality and service. I know there are high end stores if you have to ask the price, you can't afford. This place is one of those. But it is based in the truly working class city. It would be great if they at least had some items for the working class. They sell beautiful items you will have for life and even will to someone. Watches that you will make your only one. Bags and purses that show both good taste and you made it. Bikes you will enjoy but never leave outside even with their bike locks. Theses are just a few of their specialties. I did get probably the cheapest thing in the store besides the coffee. It is a small wallet that you can hook to a belt loop so you can carry a card or two, coins,and bills. Useful for when I go to museums and don't want to take the time to dig out my wallet from my purse. Have you visited the coffee shop in the basement of Shinola yet? It's time if you haven't yet. My plain latte was delicious--excellent beans used to make this cup of heaven. My husband's chai tea latte was exceptionally yummy, with the perfect amount of sweetness and spice. The ambience is swanky and hip, yet comfy and inviting. There is ample seating in the form of couches, chairs and tables. Music plays in the background. Bare stone and brick walls with sections of black painted concrete look fabulous with the green-tiled backsplash behind the counter, which is showcased at one end. They don't just sell polish here. They have tons of Leather goods, watches and so much more. Stopped to get a watch battery replaced. The technician is in from Tuesday through Saturday until 5:30 PM. The staff there so they could take a couple hours to get the battery replaced, it's all depending on how many people are in line to get the batteries. I think it's finally time to get the battery replaced on the Shinola Argonite watch that went out during the first month of the pandemic last year. Wait today is about 15 minutes to get the watch battery replaced. The first watch replacement battery is free. The battery replacement is $25 for each visit. They will send an email when the watch is done. Got an email about half hour later. Always a fun store to browse and see all of the fantastic leather goods here. I celebrated my birthday this week and my BFF sent me the perfect gift... a monogrammed leather journal cover and ruled notebook from Shinola. The back story on Shinola is that I'm originally from Detroit and on a recent trip, I went into the store with my friend... I loved everything about it but didn't make any purchases. I think she must have seen me eyeing the leather notebooks though, so how thoughtful that she sent this to me for my birthday! Shinola is known for their beautiful products and the fact that they have a skilled manufacturing staff, all in the US, primarily in Detroit. They make watches, bicycles, leather goods, jewelry, and so much more and everything is of the highest quality and built to last. The store itself is also gorgeous... It's an experience to walk-in. They have a ton of very attentive staff working at any given time, and they have a small cafe inside the store as well. I'm a huge fan of this brand and will carry my new journal around with pride. Shinola makes beautiful watches and accessories. My gripe is a recent customer service experience with Jeremy of Customer Service. He was very polite, however lead me to believe I would get a credit upon returning a watch. The watch was on sale. There was a disclaimer of no returns or exchanges that I did not see when placing the on-line order. I decided to return watch due the poor quality of the leather strap. When I submitted the return on line, there was no disclaimer about final sale. I went on-line and submitted a return request, nor was there indication of final sale on my receipt. I waited over 3 weeks and several calls into customer service to learn my package was received and customer service would look into store credit, which I was fine with that. I was supposed to get a follow up email of the final decision, which did not happen since our last communication. Instead, the watch was shipped back to me without any shipping notice or awareness. Jeremy mentioned other customers have done the same with returning the sale items. This means the final sale was not properly highlighted on their website, and customer was able to generate a return shipment label, and finally no document on receipt of "final sale/no fund/exchanges". While most things in this shop are out of my price range I do love that it's here. I love the aesthetic and the option of buying luxury goods made here in Detroit. They carry a variety of goods including beautiful watches (I will own one one day!), leather goods like notebooks, phone cases, and even dog collars and such now, some fancy leather sporting goods like mitts, baseballs, and footballs, and incredible bikes. I drool every time I'm in there. Staff is very helpful but not pushy. I stop in every time I'm in the area to window shop and no one ever makes me feel pressured. What a fun afternoon we had shopping in downtown Detroit! We had friends in from San Francisco and we stopped in at the Shinola store. I fell in love with and purchased a signature leather pouch and they engraved my initials on it for free. Meredith took great care of us...customer service is terrific and without hovering over us, the staff made sure they were always within reach to answer questions or show us items. We love this store. Some say the items are pricey, but candidly, the quality is there and even if you are just looking for a unique gift for someone, consider a gift card. Anyone would love a give card at any denomination to then be able to add to it and purchase a piece of Detroit history. Highly recommend a trip downtown to this fun store! read more

Shinola is...weird. Not in a bad way, but it's like..."What are you?". I haven't figured out if this store is having an existential crisis or if it is just post modern (probably the latter because it sounds cooler and more sure of itself). It's a hipster manifested as a store: You have bikes. You have coffee. You have a flower shop. You have jewelry. You have fine leather goods. It's like a pricey grocery store for sexy people who survive off coffee and good smells. However, I like Shinola. I walked in and instantly did not feel like I had enough money and was not cool enough to be there. However, I thrive under those conditions. It's like getting invited to spend the night or hang out with a cool kid in school: You feel honored and not good enough, but you're also like "Well, I am here; fake it till you make it." Despite my own self-esteem crisis, Shinola has some very cool features. All of the goods, right down to the coffee, are high quality, carefully made, and beautiful. Owning a Shinola piece, even touching one, feels automatically special. I picked up a few purses and their journals and felt luxurious just holding them. The only thing I ended up buying was a coffee. A piece from Shinola is an investment that, as a non-Detroiter or Michiganer, I was not ready to make. I think if I was a local, this would be a must have as it carries a sense of local pride. Another thing that was really impressive is how diverse and polite/attentive the staff was. So I was back in the D visiting my folks, catching up with friends and fixing my Coney withdrawals lol. In the process, I noticed that there are Shinola clocks planted around the city. Which I thought was pretty cool, so much that we decided to check out the store. Open layout with wood everywhere gives it a warm feel. What makes this store innovative is that all the watches are out for you to see, touch & hold. The variety is nice if you decide to bespoke a watch you can make it all your own. My only real hangup with Shinola is the price point $550 to about $2400 and that's just the watches. "Built in Detroit by Detroiters" yet most inner city Detroiters would probably explore other options when we hear the base price lol. Well... business is business and in retail things tend to have a 500% mark up as one wise man said: "It is what it is". All in all, I feel Shinola is a nice light on our city that usually gets thrown a lot of shade. read more

Talk about amazing customer service! We were in Detroit over Memorial day weekend visiting family, when I noticed my Shinola watch had stopped working. I had no idea if the Midtown Shinola Flagship store would be open, but we drove past it on our way out of town. Not only were they open, but I was amazed at the level of customer service! We were greeted warmly as we walked in, and asked if we needed help. I explained my battery seemed to be dead and was shown to a counter. My watch was whisked away, and Jordan asked if he could show me some new watchbands, as I had mentioned that mine was a little beat up. I found a great nylon one that completely changed the look of my watch. Jordan was so helpful during the process! Then I pulled out my phone to show him my Shinola phone case, and how one corner of it was damaged. He immediately offered to replace the case. Absolutely no hassle, no fuss. I wasn't even asked to provide a receipt. Their items all have serial numbers, so i suppose they could track down paperwork if they needed, but it was so nice to be treated like a valued customer. You can bet I will continue to be one after this great experience. All of this besides the fact the store itself is absolutely beautiful and well executed. They have a cafeteria inside, last Sunday I was there around 4:00 p.m. and I decided to have a cappuccino, but the cafeteria guy told me he was no longer making coffees in the expresso machine. I fell in love with this place instantly. My only complaint was that I didn't feel comfortable handling the merchandise and I felt a little awkward fumbling to find prices on their expensively beautiful watches. That's clearly my own hang-up though...I just didn't want to get caught fondling anything too long. I'm a self-admitted watch whore and these are as unique as they come and with a Detroit built company behind them taboot. I love this store just a bit high priced. The make quality time pieces, leather goods (office/desk top items such as portfolios and journals, crossbody bags, handbags, wallets, etc.), and bicycles to name a few. I wanted to look at the bicycles which are beautifully made and come with a lifetime warranty, but they are limited models to choose from (3) and they are somewhat expensive ($1,000 plus depending on any options you add). I had a wonderful conversation with the bike technician. The company's story is amazing and even his story of how he started working with Shinola was amazing. He shared the ends & outs of the process of selection to hand assembly to delivery, so I haven't completely ruled out purchasing a Shinola bicycle. Like I said the quality is great. The colors offered change throughout the year. I'll keep checking back to see what colors they're offering. read more

My partner and I are huge Shinola fans, and I am a Foundry member. We recently bought multiple items that we were hoping to get monogrammed so we took them to the Canfield location. When we got to the store on 03/04/23 at around 2:00pm, we were very rudely treated by an employee with short blonde hair and glasses. Ultimately, the items could not be monogrammed but she had an attitude, got frustrated when we asked questions, and we did not feel respected. She then went on to "gossip" with another employee and made us feel very uncomfortable, to the point that we didn't feel welcome in the store. For a company that usually has such amazing customer service, this was a really bad experience that tainted our view of Shinola, and we won't be returning to the Canfield store anytime soon. read more

I always love anything that comes out of Detroit. I was born and raised here, so I was very excited to experience this brand. I have visited this store twice and I'm totally smitten. I got a Shinola watch as I've never had a dress watch. I was looking into a Movado, but these watches have so much soul in their designs that idea went down the toilet. haha. I have a Shinola Runwell and I needed to have the battery replaced (the first one is on them). It happened within minutes and everyone was so down to earth and approachable. I was offered a beverage, which was so tasty and I took the time to look at the displays. They are very well curated and anytime I wanted to look at a watch more closely, it wasn't an issue. Considering this brand is more high end, I was ready to deal with some delay. None what so ever. I came another time with my friend and he bought the Jackie Robinson Special Edition Watch. There were only two left and one was in the case but never worn. (We called ahead so he wouldn't be disappointed if none were available.) Initially that was the one he was going to get because the associate on the phone said the other one was on hold. Honestly, if it isn't paid for, I don't think that should have been stated because all money is green. However, Gina, who is amazing, sold him the one that was "on hold." We also got some stationary and checked out all the leather goods. Be prepared to look for parking if you're going during a busy time. Also, anything purchased at the outlet can be returned at this store which is convenient. My experiences have been nothing but positive. read more
